County Executive Calvin Ball attends ribbon cutting for Howard County, MD’s first Supercharging station (09/08/2024)

schaudhery | 2024-09-08 22:53 | 350 views

I was able to attend the ribbon cutting today. Amazing how many Teslas were there utilizing the chargers. Local government was there to talk about their love for EVs and their plans to expand across the county.

Something closer to Columbia? 😍😍

schaudhery 2024-09-08 23:43

Jessup, MD. Up the street from the Dollar Tree and Costco area. I think some maps consider it Elkridge.

taney71 2024-09-08 23:52

What!?! First supercharging station for Maryland came this year?

schaudhery 2024-09-08 23:59

For Howard County, which ironically is the wealthiest county in the state. Sorry if my title was confusing.

Id assume something to that extent. The hardware has been there for a few weeks now but activation didn’t occur until recently. Just happy the network is expanding.

schaudhery 2024-09-09 00:31

Haha that’s awesome.

JerryLeeDog 2024-09-09 00:57

First in MD?? Wow I would have expected more in MD

Specialist-Rip-7325 2024-09-09 00:59

As a Howard county resident who's had a Tesla for 3 years. This does nothing, Maryland city/ laurel centre and van duesen have been the staple. This is also why I suggest a ccs adapter, I can charge for free at plenty of dealerships when these are busy. The slow roll out for more charging stations is pathetic, they need to do better.

tbonechiggins 2024-09-09 01:26

1st in Howard County, MD. Plenty of them in the whole state.

schaudhery 2024-09-09 01:30

What dealerships are you charging at? What speed are you getting?

sherlocknoir 2024-09-09 01:30

I’ve been charging at the EA CCS 10-bay at Walmart on Dobbins Rd in Columbia for 3 years now. With my kids going to school in Columbia that adapter has been worth every penny. It’s always amazing to me how many still don’t understand that the CCS adapter will literally double the amount of DC fast chargers your Tesla can access. Look, I get it.. Superchargers are the easiest & most reliable.. but you never know when there is a CCS charger that is faster, cheaper, no-waiting line or just flat out more convenient than driving further out looking for a Supercharger. Imagine buying a Honda.. but you can’t fill up at the gas station right across the street because they only sell “Toyota” gas

Specialist-Rip-7325 2024-09-09 01:37

Chevrolet in Laurel is free, VW on fort Meade road is free. Ccs opens up a network of charging that compliments the Tesla chargers. Is it as fast as the Tesla network? No. But a charge is a charge when you can't find a supercharger or it's packed because of a holiday. Electrify America at the Walmart in Columbia let's me charge at 150kwh. With ccs you can find free chargers on the app "plug share"

AJHenderson 2024-09-09 01:39

I'm just waiting for a super charger ribbon cutting where they accidentally cut a charger cable instead.

schaudhery 2024-09-09 01:39

Only way to tell if it’s 350 kW

AJHenderson 2024-09-09 01:41

The higher the power the bigger the fireworks.

inobmaZ 2024-09-09 01:57

I would have expected each village center to have its own supercharger location in Columbia by now. Get CA on board and let'r rip. 1 is better than none but I'm still disappointed.

prestodigitarium 2024-09-09 02:43

Maybe it’s delayed because it’s so wealthy that many people are able to plug in at home?

JerryLeeDog 2024-09-09 02:54

Just going off what the title says I’m from Maryland and moved to San Diego 4 years ago. Tesla literally everywhere here

MustangV6Premium 2024-09-09 04:15

V3 is good enough for most cars today so likely that. Only the cybertruck and select others can charge at more than 250kwh. That said, I do believe Tesla should absolutely be installing v4 cabs instead of v3 for future-proofing and the longer cables to connect to other cars so they don’t take up two spots

hotdogsrnice 2024-09-09 04:44

Wow, I definitely thought Howard county would've had a super charging station way before now

[deleted] 2024-09-09 06:16

You’re trying to tell me that there were no superchargers in Columbia, Laurel or Clarksville before this? Really?

kampfgruppekarl 2024-09-09 06:37

I was thinking the same thing, had to recheck the subreddit. lol

schaudhery 2024-09-09 11:29

None in Columbia or Clarksville. Laurel is considered PG county based on where the chargers is.

schaudhery 2024-09-09 11:30

HoCo has a law that all new builds must have an EV charger hook up. We built our home in 2021 and the builders were required to put the connection in the garage.

feurie 2024-09-09 12:41

People had charged successfully weeks ago.

feurie 2024-09-09 12:42

Travel routes and gas stations are where Tesla is going to prioritize things.

feurie 2024-09-09 12:43

That's very iffy, depends on business hours and if they let you, and could change at any time.

feurie 2024-09-09 12:44

None the county. Laurel crosses county lines. Also Clarksville isn't that big of a travel route so I'd be surprised if Tesla put there effort in there before finding something along 70 between Baltimore and Frederick.

feurie 2024-09-09 12:45

What makes that ironic? Superchargers go in travel routes, not small suburban village shopping centers.

feurie 2024-09-09 12:46

First supercharger in (Howard County, MD). That's how you'd describe a county, and that's what the title read. Obviously there are superchargers in MD. There were superchargers in MD 4 years ago.

iqisoverrated 2024-09-09 12:48

I had the same issue. Even looked up the rules. XD

schaudhery 2024-09-09 12:59

Every SC around us is in a shopping center or town center.

ihopeicanforgive 2024-09-09 13:03

I wish. There’s some super chargers near MD live

prestodigitarium 2024-09-09 13:07

Ah, yeah, even a standard 120V outlet is probably fine for most people's commutes.

JerryLeeDog 2024-09-09 13:16

Cool you can read that title both ways though My comment is it the only one who read it like that

iqisoverrated 2024-09-09 14:24

They totally need to rename one of the stalls from "B-1" or something to "Q-12"

Specialist-Rip-7325 2024-09-09 15:35

It's not iffy when you've talked with the general manager during business hours. You don't just use people's stuff without asking. That's common sense.

schaudhery 2024-09-09 17:53

👍

Professional-End-674 2024-09-10 00:56

About time!

Puzzlehead-Meat518 2024-09-10 11:59

“Oh and btw you have to wait at this charging station for 12 hours to get a full charge”

schaudhery 2024-09-10 12:00

?

WorldlyOriginal 2024-09-10 17:22

According to [https://supercharge.info/map](https://supercharge.info/map) they filed the permit years ago, when V4 didn't exist yet. Upgrading to V4 probably would've required renegotiating the permit and associating planning approvals and delayed the opening by another year.
