How to get used to regenerative braking?

stixmike | 2026-03-08 15:02 | 9 views

How long did it take you to get used to regenerative braking? Another Tesla owner who is an Uber driver told me a few days ago that many people cancel Tesla ubers because it gives them motion sickness. He said he had to really learn to let off the acceleration very slowly so that the regenerative braking doesn't cause motion sickness. I assume this can also cause motion sickness in the driver. Is there any way to turn it off? Or how did you manage adjusting to this type of driving?

Couple days

Empty_Wallaby5481 2026-03-08 15:05

It doesn't take long. I've been driving with one pedal for 8 years now. It is much smoother than using the brakes when you get the hang of it.

little_nipas 2026-03-08 15:05

I got used to it same day.

RScottyL 2026-03-08 15:05

Yeah, as the driver, it took me a day or two to get used to it, but I never got motion sickness!

IJToday 2026-03-08 15:08

It takes almost no time for anyone to get used to it (maybe a day max) and if a “professional” Uber driver can’t figure it out then I would not want to be riding with that Uber driver anyway.

I’ve been driving for 30 years with “normal” braking. Took me less than a week to use (and prefer) Tesla style braking using only the “gas” pedal. I also have an ICE car that I switch back and forth between without difficulty. Funnily the one part that I have difficulty with when I switch is gear shifting. On an ICE automatic the order is P R N D so you pull down to go into drive and push up to go into reverse, while on a late model Tesla you swipe up (forward) to go into drive and swipe down (backward) to go into reverse. I now find the ICE car takes me a “beat” to override my muscle memory on the Tesla. :)

A couple days for sure but a bit longer to learning stopping distance to the point where you can drive daily without tapping the brakes

Ok-Improvement-3670 2026-03-08 15:11

It took about 5-10 minutes of driving.

Florida_Driver 2026-03-08 15:13

One pedal driving feels more intuitive

Briz-TheKiller- 2026-03-08 15:13

1 hr or less

ser0t 2026-03-08 15:13

A decent driver will get used with handling it in just a few days. Took me 2 days. 3rd day i even forgot that i need to pay attention to it so that was all. Motion sickness is due to lack of driving skills, not the car itself.

jrwilhelm1 2026-03-08 15:13

5 minutes. Don't listen to Uber driver.

jeffbannard 2026-03-08 15:17

Agreed. Didn’t take long, and you quickly learn to let off the gas pedal slowly to not cause excessive braking.

Capital-Control308 2026-03-08 15:17

A day or two. You will really miss it when you drive a car that does not have it .

stixmike 2026-03-08 15:17

ok thanks guys you convinced me it's okay lol

jeffbannard 2026-03-08 15:18

I love trying to judge when to let off the “gas” pedal coming up to a red light so the car stops at the perfect spot at the stop line

Juju8419 2026-03-08 15:20

Couple of days. I was actually surprised how quickly.

Bickenchutt05 2026-03-08 15:21

It’s hard for me to drive my non-EV cars now. I forget to hit the brakes. You will see! Just go drive and have fun!

TYO_HXC 2026-03-08 15:21

About 5 minutes, on my first ever test drive.

NotYourScratchMonkey 2026-03-08 15:22

Tesla and rental car agencies apparently have an agreement where it is pretty inexpensive for Uber drivers to rent a Tesla for their Uber job so they don't use their personal car. You can rent the Tesla, drive for Uber, and still make a profit. One guess is that some of these Tesla Uber drivers just aren't used to regenerative breaking. If that Tesla actually belonged to the Uber driver, my guess is that they'd be fine. But if they are renting the Tesla and they are new to Teslas, I can see there being some learning curves.

PracticlySpeaking 2026-03-08 15:22

The easy fix for this is Chill mode (the acceleration setting, not FSD). Motion sickness happens for passengers much more than for the driver because the driver is controlling the acceleration and deceleration. They know it is happening vs having to react.

Draygoon2818 2026-03-08 15:23

Took me a few minutes whilst on my test drive. I think the "motion sickness" is more from the take off than from the braking. My wife complains all the time, that it makes her queasy when I start driving. It's because of the torque the vehicle has vs. what most ICE vehicles have. She's used to a large SUV which has the 6.4L 392. You can control how much regenerative braking there is, and how much acceleration there is when you start going. I'm not going to change any of that because I like how my car drives. Wife just has to deal with it. lol

T_Hankss 2026-03-08 15:24

10 minutes

Separate-Primary2949 2026-03-08 15:24

Took about 2 days / weekend. And you can drive it infinitely smoother than any ice car! Took about a month to get used to not T boning people pulling out of roundabouts. Was used to a duel clutch in a merc which was slow and unpredictable

S4vingRyan-sPr1v8 2026-03-08 15:27

This is quite subjective, i.e. depends from person to person. Personally, took me around a week 🤔

stixmike 2026-03-08 15:29

Maybe that's the real reason then. The acceleration. I'm getting a M3P so I don't know if I'm going to lay off the acceleration.

Draygoon2818 2026-03-08 15:33

The acceleration is intoxicating, for sure! I love it. A Raptor stood no chance, and a supped up Mustang stood no chance.

Tilmanstoa5ty 2026-03-08 15:36

For me it was on my drive home picking up the car. All you have to do is let the pedal lose gently

ChymChymX 2026-03-08 15:36

It's similar to driving a golf cart, press to go, ease off to slow, take your foot off entirely and if will come to a stop. It's great, I can't go back to ICE vehicles.

Serious_Panic_8425 2026-03-08 15:38

About a day. No more.

BitofaGreyArea 2026-03-08 15:39

Like the drive home from picking up the car 🤷🏾

danceswithsockson 2026-03-08 15:39

You’ll be used to it within the day. I hated it until I had to admit it’s probably the way cars should work. Coasting can be dangerous and hard for people to judge. Gas should be an active decision.

777_heavy 2026-03-08 15:40

Those Uber drivers with Teslas getting complaints are getting them because they suck at driving.

Stivo887 2026-03-08 15:41

13 speed semi truck driver here. Got used to it quick. My trucks engine brake is stronger.

Myzhi1 2026-03-08 15:44

Probably few minutes after car regenerate the first time.   What took longer was building leg / foot strength to constantly push / hold the petal in place at the beginning.  Leg got a little sore after a while.

digiblur 2026-03-08 15:45

Yeah that Uber driver is just trying to be an ass. You get used to it in an hour or so. And once you do, you don't want to go back.

boka_ko_masu 2026-03-08 15:46

It took me less than few minutes to get used to it.

eSUP80 2026-03-08 15:46

Few days. Driving in Chill helps a lot with smoothness. Not that i care but in an uber it makes sense

Solarsurferoaktown 2026-03-08 15:49

If you don’t learn in 3 days you’re the problem

frank_nada 2026-03-08 15:51

A week before it was second-nature and stopped thinking about it.

tim128 2026-03-08 15:53

As a driver you will not get motion sickness because you know when you're going to slow down and subconsciously brace yourself. With regen braking you speed up and slow down more in slow increments which can be uncomfortable for passengers. Be mindful of this and your passengers won't have much issues. A lot of taxi drivers don't care though.

Hardvig 2026-03-08 15:57

I got super motion sick the day I tried a model Y from the dealership. The day we picked up our own I felt nothing and never have since 🤷‍♂️

dookiewater 2026-03-08 17:35

This goes extra hard when you’re accustomed to having auto shift enabled and you expect the ICE vehicle to shift itself.

i_mormon_stuff 2026-03-08 18:14

Within 1 hour on my first test drive of the vehicle I was used to it.

Ancient-Sandwich9400 2026-03-08 21:34

It took me 2-3 stops and by the 4th I was nailing my stops. But the car is so slow on braking, I normally start braking later than the car using regen.

s_nz 2026-03-08 22:54

A lot of motion sickness is about unexpected movement. Given the driver is actively operating steering, accelerating, breaking etc, plus watching the road for hills, potholes etc, they are typically not impacted by motion sickness. In terms of getting used to the regenerative breaking, it takes a matter of minutes. But if you want your passengers to have a comfortable ride, one does need to be very steady with their right foot (especially when wanting to coast or slow down). Regeneration cannot adjusted off in Tesla, but many / most other EV brands do allow this. (My BMW i3 also had aggressive allways on regen. My nissan leaf had strong regen default to off, but could be enabled via B mode, but even this was mild compared to the BMW and Tesla) Seriously just take one for a test drive, nothing quite like doing it yourself.

skriefal 2026-03-09 02:08

Minutes, maybe. Certainly less than an hour. This was 5 years ago so that's as close as I can estimate now. I was letting off (modulating) the accelerator pedal to gradually slow down right from the start. It just seemed the correct thing to do. Motion sickness has never been a problem for me. I've asked passengers on occasion if they've noticed any motion sickness - no one has ever done so.

Huge_Ad_2133 2026-03-12 17:53

A few days for that. But the other car features are taking longer to get used too.
