Heated Steering Wheel

jonizzzle | 2026-03-05 00:08 | 530 views

I’ve always been impressed with how quickly the steering wheel warms up so I used an IR thermal camera to see what it looked like. It turned out pretty neat!

always wondered how the coils were laid out!

AAPatel82 2026-03-05 00:21

What camera did you use to do that?

StormTrpr66 2026-03-05 00:29

Nice. In my previous car (Toyota) the "heated" steering wheel only got warm at the 3:00 and 9:00 positions. Very uncomfortable.

izz_209 2026-03-05 00:32

I feel like it always gets hotter at 10 and 2.

apxx 2026-03-05 00:44

Looks like a FLIR mobile device

AdultContemporaneous 2026-03-05 00:47

This is the kinda stuff I use my FLIR for (at least for troubleshooting). Nice.

rsg1234 2026-03-05 00:51

I feel like an idiot using my FLIR only for checking insulation.

anonymouswunnn 2026-03-05 00:54

That’s hot 🥵

iLeet1 2026-03-05 00:58

I’ve used my camera on the heated seat. They look pretty cool too, but the quality of this thermal image is crazy. What device is this?

CookieMons7er 2026-03-05 01:09

Interesting

Inevitable_Ad_711 2026-03-05 01:10

Yeah our RAV4 prime works the same. Kind of a mind boggling design decision.

digiblur 2026-03-05 01:16

Yet we still can't tell the precondition to not heat up the steering wheel and the passenger seat.

jonizzzle 2026-03-05 01:17

Oh man I bring my camera everywhere just to see all kinds of random stuff lol

jonizzzle 2026-03-05 01:17

Polaroid

Away-Scar7754 2026-03-05 01:27

So freaking cool

xyzlor 2026-03-05 01:43

Thats a cool image. Negated?? Pun intended. :)

bballlal 2026-03-05 01:54

Now take the same pic of the Highland’s vented seats. Pretty sure they do nothing. 🤣

StormTrpr66 2026-03-05 02:00

If I had space to park a 3rd car I would have kept the R4P but we only have space for two, so the R4p got traded for the Model Y. So far I'm very happy. And yeah, there are some things on the R4P that left me wondering what Toyota was thinking. The so called heated steering wheel was one of them.

lionheart4life 2026-03-05 02:23

You can manually turn them off in the app. I get what you are saying though.

digiblur 2026-03-05 02:25

If only there was something in the car to detect my constant actions of turning them off each and every morning. Luckily it isn't cold anymore.

ElkSoft6157 2026-03-05 02:53

do you grip 10 and 2 more than 9 and 3?

Stt022 2026-03-05 03:50

The scroll wheels are so colddddddd 🥶

richms 2026-03-05 04:27

Wish it extended into the scrollwheel surround plastic parts as they are ice cold in the morning in winter.

rivermouse2 2026-03-05 04:56

don’t need it. i use FSD so i never touch the steering wheel.

Euro_Snob 2026-03-05 06:22

What camera is this? The quality is great.

djmere 2026-03-05 07:56

still mad that I bought the old flir with the old iphone connector. Can't use it with my new phone. I think I might have an iphone 4 around here somewhere

djmere 2026-03-05 07:57

Leica

Tradetheday2093 2026-03-05 09:53

Geez that picture gives me a weird feeling like when you see a bunch of holes

SuperSaint77x 2026-03-05 10:57

What model Tesla is this? My Juniper seems to be lacking some of the heating coils on top.

AAPatel82 2026-03-05 12:57

My Hasselblad X2D2 doesn’t have this thermal mode …

efficientndeffective 2026-03-05 14:15

Ah this is dope! Give us the seats please 🙏

jonizzzle 2026-03-05 14:30

Mine is a ‘23 MYP

Mammoth-Hawk-1106 2026-03-05 15:06

rear seat center on high is for when I'm bringing pizza home in the winter.

Consistent-King9966 2026-03-05 15:42

I wonder what it looks if you have you your ventilated seats on AC if you have those

PxssyFeu 2026-03-05 15:46

I feel like where my finger tips are resting is always cold though, on the seam behind the steering wheel :/ But still my favourite feature of the car

BSNgirl 2026-03-05 16:39

I have noticed on long drives that the heated seat and steering wheel only lasts for 40 minutes and then it gets cold. Even if you turn it off and on again, even if you have enough battery... 2022 Model Y Anyone else have this experience?

izz_209 2026-03-05 16:44

More like 3.5 and 9.5

jonizzzle 2026-03-05 16:49

On colder days I just leave it on the low setting to sustain the heat. Anything above that it’s just too hot over 30 seconds for me.

mattwb72 2026-03-05 17:40

I've always appreciated how over engineered this feature has felt. I currently also have a Lucid and it sucks by comparison.

iamdonovanwilliams 2026-03-05 18:14

I second this

BSNgirl 2026-03-05 19:03

I'll have to try that. I noticed that in this cold Minnesota weather it just cant keep the cabin warm, and then the seats help but only for about that 40 minutes, but I have them on the hottest setting Also this is on the freeway so driving like 70+ and I think the wind overpowers the cabin heat I am going to use my brother's FLIR today and compare starting heat to 20 and 40 minutes out to see what it looks like. Thanks for the idea :)

netscorer1 2026-03-05 20:19

I love this feature too. The only thing that irritates me is that when I use FSD, Tesla still heats up the wheel, even though I don't use it.

Entry45 2026-03-05 21:45

Is this a Juniper or a Legacy y?

jonizzzle 2026-03-05 21:51

Legacy

Entry45 2026-03-05 21:59

Awesome because I have a legacy and I did not realize that all of the seats except the center rear heated up the back rest

TESTlCLE 2026-03-05 22:57

Is it because that’s where the vent blows hot air?

DocPhillip 2026-03-06 12:41

I’m surprised it still works! My FLIR with the lightning connector auto-bricked itself, and based on my searching around thereafter, it sounds like most did that… An intentional move on FLIR’s part. If yours still works, you can probably get some decent coin for it on eBay.

lawinvest 2026-03-06 13:51

I literally was telling my kid the other day it’s a waste for me to turn his seat warmer on bc his booster seat covers the part actually getting warm. I stand corrected my little dude.

ipokesnails 2026-03-09 01:47

Interesting, I've got a little bitty cold spot at 6 o clock that's noticeable when it's around -15°C or below.
