2026 Model Y vs 2023 Used Model Y with HW4

jmutiny1993 | 2026-02-26 17:49 | 11 views

I'm having 2nd thoughts about buying the model Y brand new. I was looking at the RWD Premium and with taxes/fees its coming out to like $51k. And I know as soon as I drive off the lot I'm going to be down like $10k in depreciation and maybe like down $20k after a year. Also going to feel like an idiot if a new model/upgrade comes out the next year. I started looking at used 2023 models (The ones with HW4). And with taxes/fees they are coming out to about $34k. Almost $17k cheaper. Example like this: https://www.tesla.com/my/order/7SAYGDEE7PA196458#overview https://www.tesla.com/my/order/7SAYGDEE9PF799639#overview Apart from the cosmetic changes and the suspension if I understand correctly its the same car. Regarding the suspension I found out you can just buy the parts for the 2026 Juniper model which costs around $1k for all of them. My father has a mechanic shop and I can just go there and install them for free together with him. Would this be better than dropping $17k for the brand new model?

Yes, I think so. I made the same choice. I picked up a 2023 Model Y AWD Long Range with HW4. I picked mine up for $32,400 with EAP, blue, white seats and 20 inch wheels and 30,000 miles. I upgraded to FSD for $2k as that was an option a month ago. I find the suspension in the 2023 Model Y is fine. The only things we lose is the rear screen, ventilated seats and the ambient lighting. I could care less about the rear screen and the lighting.

I would get the used. (Haha I was you last month) I dont need the juniper upgrades for 30k. Suspension isnt bad at all, just more bouncy/wobbly. You can upgrade that easily with aftermarket parts or juniper suspension. (I just added stiffer sway bars and that solved a lot of my dislikes in the suspension) Btw, I got the performance, so that was the major reason for me to go with the used rather than a new performance.

The suspension can be retrofitted but it still won't ride exactly the same and the road noise will still be significantly different. You also can't retrofit the better aerodynamics or the accompanying range benefits. If none of that bothers you then you can throw a rear screen with climate controls in, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and things like that to have a louder and rougher pre-Juniper HW4 Y. It's close enough for some and not for others, just depends on the person.

Sounds deadening is the biggest difference then comes the suspension which you can swap out. Then ofc is looks and interior stuff. But the new Y is significantly quieter at highway speeds

🤣 You lose MORE than that. Don’t put your legacy Y in close proximity with mine! Juniper has front camera, acoustic glass, better UV protection on the roof, better head lights, generally better build quality, better suspension. *ventilated front seats Yes the build quality and suspension create a big gap btw our cars

Bought a late 2023 Y with HW4 a few months ago and got a great deal and have been super happy with it. Enhauto makes an aftermarket LED strip (amongst other things) that I added to it but it's been perfect otherwise. Couldnt justify buying the new Y with the price point I got it used for.

How much was the interest rate?

How much was the OTD $ and the interest rate?

Out the door was about 28k before trade in, 18k miles, blue with clean history and in great condition and has all the 2024 features (comfort suspension, matrix headlights, HW4) Interest rate is 7% but I'll have it paid off in the next year

LoneStarGut 2026-02-26 22:05

My 2023 has Matrix headlights, and acoustic glass at least in the front. I mentioned the ventilated seats - thats about the only thing I miss.

5.25%, the dealer found at a local credit union. I paid cash instead.

That’s a great deal. I was set on buying the new juniper with the interest rate promotion, and now I’m having second thoughts

cooltech786 2026-02-26 22:38

I drove the new Y before I got one and it's awesome and I was very tempted. Can't go wrong with either. Wasn't a fan of the touchscreen gear selector on the Juniper but otherwise a great car.

IGNORED34 2026-02-26 22:43

Definitely not better headlights

FLawless______ 2026-02-26 22:53

Mmm I see, front is definitely better than none.

dumbindian21 2026-02-26 23:52

Not 17k worth bro

FLawless______ 2026-02-27 00:53

I agree w that. Budget and use case is important. If it were me, 1 car I’m going new because I’ll have an itch for newer.

Melchizedek_Inquires 2026-02-27 07:13

We have both, like both, the new one is quieter, feels a little smoother, it's a little more polished, but they are both great cars. If money is not an issue, go for the new one, but you won't regret either car.

Strongly considered 23 MY Before buying juniper. They are different cars. The noise and suspension are on different levels. Used AWD junipers with light headliner and smaller screens are selling from 45k to 52k right now, so at times more than new.m, so I don’t believe depreciation is what is being claimed at the moment. Factor in interest, and if you can comfortably afford it, it’s the better buy. If not, the 23 with upgraded suspension will be nice, but 34k + 1-2k for suspension, and interest of 3-8k depending on rate and time, and the cost gap becomes smaller. You loose the camera, screen, years of warranty, and ride quality. Both are great cars, but the juniper for me was the better buy.

17k difference for the same car with a minor refresh, get the used
