Way to make a steering wheel worse

Respect your opinion. Have you tried it? I have never to be honest.

I was enticed to switch, esp since I have FSD, but decided not to after hearing all the negative, especially slow speeds, parking lots, driveways, reverse parking.

What’s there to say other than it cuts the wheel in half, limits its usability, and may even be considered unsafe.

I tried it and it is something else to get used to. Probably similar to getting used to one pedal driving

I dont have a steer by wire vehicle so no, that's the only time it makes sense

Just looking at it, it seems very impractical - can't see the appeal of these.

I love my yoke, its weird are first but now I hate driving with a wheel

I've never used one but can't imagine I'd like it. Any turn more than 180 degrees seems super annoying.

Hmm, i never thought about the unsafety part.

I really like mine. Switched from a wheel because I’m tall and it prevents me from hitting my knee as much. You get used to it quickly. It has its disadvantages at slow speeds but it’s a lot more fun going fast.

Just like gas owners, they hate electric until they drive one 😅

Haven't experienced the yoke but I can't imagine any negatives. I tried the CT and found the steering wheel at first funky, but makes total sense for resting the hands.

Exactly, I was so unsure about my Tesla, one year later I could never go back to gas

Without steer by wire, it's just less safety.

That thing is pretty ugly. I don't care what it's usability is. If it's ugly I'm not gonna buy it.

I have Yokes on my 21 MY and 18 MX. IMO it makes driving and handling better. But I was also trained to drive at 8/4 rather than 10/2.

At least one pedal driving has benefits

On a Tesla other than the CT it makes no sense because they aren’t steer by wire. I love the wheel on the CT though since it’s steer by wire.

I have the yoke in my model s. You get used to it quick and it becomes a rare slight inconvenience at worst. That being said, the full wheel would be an objective improvement. The only upside is the visibility of the screen right above the yoke. If given the choice I would take the wheel.

Tried it. Fine when you're going 0-160 in 4 seconds but weird driving otherwise. Definitely prefer round or flat bottom traditional wheel

I ordered a Yoke for my 2023 Model Y last month.. Finally putting it in this weekend can't wait.

Having the top part of the steering wheel removed helps to see the gauge cluster, but Tesla’s don’t have gauge clusters so what’s the point

When I was shopping for one they were not letting you test drive it. offered me to test cars I already own. If I were to own a car with a joke, id think having a screen where the wheel used to be would be nice.

Works better in model X where you have a secondary screen in the front where you have a gauge cluster. It's pointless I'm M3 and Y IMO

I have a yoke, came with my '22 MS plaid. When searching for a plaid I always said I'd find one with a wheel or get the yoke replaced ASAP. Having now lived with the yoke for about 6 months I can say, it's 100% a case of form over function. It is more difficult to use in many situations. That being said there is a part of me that loves it purely for that form side. There's a great feeling to hold it and signal lane changes on highways. If we were in a steer by wire world with model s, holy shit. I'm tempted. With FSD, I rarely touch the wheel anymore anyway. So, thoughts: - If I'm not using the wheel much, why spend money on a new one? - If I'm not touching the wheel much, will I ever get comfortable enough with the yolk to comfortably take over quickly on the occasion I really need to? - Will it really impact the view out the glass while I'm supervising my trips? Needless to say, I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Should have back in the v12 days when I wasn't using FSD as much and would have had the time to get comfortable rt with it.

I used one for two years, loved every second of it. People that say you wouldn’t be able to turn easily with it haven’t used one, I could do full turns with it effortlessly using one finger. With that being said, I recently upgraded to a new Y and I think I will not put one in because I do worry that the airbag wouldn’t deploy properly as the airbag was designed to have the support of the top of the wheel.

I have one. I like it. I don't love it. Definitely a talking point when people see the car. I do like that my shoulders feel more open when holding the sides of the yoke. Hard to explain. I find it more comfortable than a normal wheel. Would I rush to install one on my next car? Probably not. Do I regret it? No.

Ferrari doesn't even use them, why should you or anyone else. So unsafe for hand over hand over or under steer correction in slippery surfaces or hydroplaning. No steer by wire makes them useless even more.

I like the yoke. But get one of the newer ones that are smaller, they look better and are easier to use

I’m tall so it helps with airflow too! Otherwise I felt like I constantly had it blowing air on my hands or the passenger and driver window lol.

I had it on my previous Y. I loved it! Was a problem when I sold the car (I didn’t feel like swapping back original)

I’ve only tried one once, when the service center gave me a cyber truck for a day when my MY was being worked on. I wasn’t the biggest fan, I have to be completely honest. I didnt hate it, but I didn’t like it. I can see why others might like it, but it wasn’t for me.

Never ever. No oil changes, no other random fluids that have you constantly going to a mechanic. No looking for a random mechanic that takes the car for an oil change and now you need a new transmission.

I can’t do it, dude. I want to like it, but the number of times I rest my hand on the top of the wheel during a drive is at least 20.

I still prefer a full wheel, but I like the yoke. ‘23 S non-P. It feels exceptionally secure when holding the columns and hard accelerating.

I think that without steer-by-wire, it's dumb as hell. Without the top half, hand-over-hand steering on big turns ranges anywhere from awkward to downright dangerous given that you can grab a space where there is nothing to grab. Additionally, unless it's designed for the car like the yoke for Model S/X were, the airbag lacks proper top bracing if it goes off. The only reason it kind of made sense on the S/X was because it provided better visual clearance to the instrument gauge. Even then, it was something that Tesla eventually discontinued it because the significant majority valued practicality and safety.

I don’t understand why anyone would want a worse steering wheel in their model y or 3, or cybertruck for that matter. It helps you see the gauge cluster and feels cool. That’s about all it does, other than that it is WORSE than a regular steering wheel. When I got my plaid it was the only option, I like it because it makes driving my special car, feel special. I absolutely fucking hate backing into parking spots with it. Why anyone would opt into it without the benefit of having a clearer gauge view is beyond me. I also think many of the people who do so are putting incredible trust in whoever makes aftermarket yokes. Not a part I would cheap out on.

When Tesla shows off those videos of conquering the ring and whatnot, the performance drivers use a wheel.

I drove a rented model S for about 200 miles on a weekend trip. The signals being on the wheel was annoying but that's mostly a separate design thing.  Doing tight residential turns was obnoxious. If you move too fast it's easy to miss the wheel during the hand over hand motion. I once activated FSD, had it spazz out and do something I didn't want, and it was difficult to regain control because the yoke was jiggling all over the place and I couldn't just place my hands anywhere a wheel would be.  Overall I think it's a silly gimmick for people who fancy themselves racecar drivers.

You just rest it lower, in one of the corners with your arm perfectly supported by either center console or arm rest on door!

Doesn't suck as much as people think, but reinvention of the steering wheel for a "cool" idea was unnecessary. Same with removal of stalks.

I would not get the yoke on a car without steer-by-wire.

I had for my 2022 RWD and it now still sits in my storage room gathering dust. Without steer-by-wire it's just dumb and the stock airbag is not designed for aftermarket 3/Y yokes in mind, making them even less safe

Wait what? You’re telling if i switch to yoke, the airbag may not deploy properly?

That is because the CT has steer-by-wire. Its steering wheel doesn't end up being a tall block on big turns.

Yokes are completely stupid on any cars where the steering does more then half a turn each way. What happends if you get into a big slide? The wheel can spin by itself, you just can't catch it wherever you want, half the wheel is missing! It's not a racecar it's a grocery getter, a round wheel is just safer and does not need you or any other driver to relearn how to drive.

Except that electric cars have tangible benefits over gas while a yoke has near zero without steer-by-wire. It's only edge benefit is better visibility behind the wheel when not turned which is moot point for 3/Y.

I love it on my 23MS.

2023 S with a yoke. Loved it. Got a 26 with a yoke despite the extra 1000 dollar price tag.

If there is steer by wire I like it a lot. I do wish the press buttons had bumps to sense te without looking

I got used it in maybe 2 weeks. Now, I sort of rather to have it for longer trips than a normal steering wheel, like in my wife's ICE car ( which i still leave running when I leave the car :) ) . The only issue i have is when the yoke is tilted left and I get in the car.... always my leg bumps on it. No biggie.

First time I saw that I thought --> "why would I pay more money to get something that isn't as good?" To me a standard wheel is clearly easier to control. If the yoke was cheaper and the standard wheel more expensive things would make more sense.

I’d have three concerns: 1. The airbag is designed for a round wheel, a retrofit yoke could alter deployment geometry and potentially affect safety. 2. Tight turns would be less practical, especially on narrow, curvy European roads compared to wider, straighter U.S. roads. 3. In a hard impact, the wheel can snap back violently, with a yoke, the flat edge could strike the driver, similar to injuries seen in sim racing with high-torque wheelbases. Tesla may account for this in factory equipped yoke models, but not necessarily in retrofits. Sidenote if I could retrofit steer by wire I would, including a yoke.

The Cybertruck's wheel is SOOOO much better than the yoke in my opinion. I received an X for a loaner while the truck was getting the cant rails replaced and the fact that the wheel rotates all the way around leaves several spots where grabbing the wheel is not intuitive or comfortable. I was not a fan.

Jury’s out for me. If FSD is on and I need to make an emergency maneuver, will that missing section on top limit what I can do? Maybe…

I love it overall and am used to it. At first I wasn't sure. But one thing it sucks at is drifting. But the plaid is too heavy anyways but the yoke makes it even more difficult. One more thing you can't use your knee to drive and multitask but that's what autopilot is for.

Another benefit is the smaller surface area for the hand warmer to have to heat. On high it gets hot!

Does it impact the airbags at all? Just curious, I don’t have a yoke.

This winter has been brutal in New England. That feature is a godsend for freezing hands.

I could not hate it more. Not just that one.. All similar. I've spent 32 years with my left hand at 12 o'clock.. This would be a hard pass even if I could get past it looking like a video game controller..

Then you’ll definitely love the yoke. You’ll find turns are a lot easier as you underhand the yoke and lift/spin it allllll the way around.

It’s harder to spin the wheel like a regular round one when turning into a spot etc. thats really it

Had an oil change a few weeks ago lol, (gearbox fluid) under warranty tho
