I did 30% on the sides and 70% on the windshield I run the roof insert panel in summer and take it out in fall. We have a 2023 model 3 too that I tinted all the glass including the roof. I don’t personally feel the heat rejection is good enough to warrant the price of tinting the roof/back glass.

That’s another consideration. Thanks if it doesn’t reject the heat well enough on the roof I’ll just stick to the cover

Have you considered installing sun blocker? I install it as soon as summer comes. It is so much cooler inside the car once installed.

We live in an extreme desert climate. The main reason we didn’t tint the roof/back this time around is because we still needed the glass covers in summer even with the high end llumar ceramic tint. Might be different for other locations but here 120 degree summers tint wasn’t enough.

Search Tesla sun shade on Amazon. They have a bunch. I do the same and put it up during warmer months and take it off in the winter

Don’t need to, glass roof tint is enough, esp on the new models. However, windshield is a must.

My 2020 model y why doesn't need any extra tint I checked the default tint level of the roof and it's at 5% can barely even see out of it. Seems like some models had really light roof tint

Nope, not worth the risks, and not really needed anyway.

I skipped it on my Y

I never found the need for tint on my M3. The factory tint is about 5% and I've never felt the sun scorching down on me where I live - Toronto. Might be different if you live in Texas/Florida or some place constantly sunny

On my 3 it was a must on all of my windows with ceramic. On the Y, the stock rear glass do well without tint as they are darker with some uv protection. I opted to just do the front side windows and my heat went down. Thinking about going the front windshield as that is the major problem of heat coming into the car. For me it wasn’t for the privacy but more for the uv and heat protection.

I got my '26 M3P tinted last week including the glass roof, however, I am going back again soon to have the roof tint taken off. First of all, it takes away from the "openness" of the cabin. All I see now is just the reflection of the interior even in broad daylight. Second, after reading about risks of glass cracking, I don't want to take any chances.

I just got my 2023 model 3 and its for sure tinted, i was surprised at how dark it is. Currently all my other windows are tint-less and the roof is noticeably different

Yea I wish mine was way less tinted like 15% at least . At 5% it doesn't even feel like a window. I forget it is half the time

It isn't useless but it also [isn't as effective as you may expect](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL_uhh9Tjbw), dropping from 4w/m2 to 2w/m2 or less drops heat by 50% or more but that isn't a lot of heat getting through in the first place.

I’m from Malaysia where it’s hot af year round, and everybody here tints their EV glass roofs with no issues. I’m an M3P owner and part of the local Tesla owners’ club, and everyone tints it with varying VLT % levels, some as low as 10%. I personally went with 50% so I still get some natural light.

Anyone know what percentage of infrared the glass blocks on its own? A ceramic film blocks around 90% depending on the film used.

I have tinted both my 2022 RWD and my current 2025 AWD, no issues with either while the benefits has been huge. I tinted the roof 70% just like my windshield.

Some people blame cracked roofs on tinting (just like they did on cracked light strips), never mind that non-tinted roofs have also cracked and plenty of tinted roofs have NOT cracked.

Before I bought mine I researched shades and tints for the roof but held off getting anything. I've had my M3 for almost 5 years now and I never once was bothered by not getting any of that.
For reference, for the first 4 years that I owned it I lived in an area that gets brutally hot in the summer.

Juniper has an embedded silver layer in the roof. Tesla says it's up to 7x better, but I'm not sure how they substantiate that. But it's an improvement.

To me, possible damage to the defroster wires. They are very fragile. More so in this car than any car I’ve owned in the past.
And almost certain damage to the defroster wires if the tinting is later removed.
Also, I don’t know if your car is leased, but if so, I sure wouldn’t do it in that instance.

If you want to look out of your roof year round, consider adding a little extra UV protection with a quality film. If you don’t care to look up, just get a sun shade. I added a 70% XPEL film to mine. Lets most light through, blocks nearly 100% of UV that gets through the built in protection. YMMV

This is the way. The price of doing the roof isn’t worth it. Most of the thermal heat comes through the windscreen and roof so using shades is your best option. Plus the roof is already factory tinted.
