My trunk keeps randomly opening itself.

InteractionTiny6575 | 2026-02-25 14:45 | 39 views

I have a 2018 model 3, as of a few days ago my I keep getting notifications that my trunk is open. No one is near the car, no one is using the app and poof out of nowhere I’m notified that my trunk is left open. Has anyone experienced this?

This but my Frunk. Started randomly, happened twice. Haven’t noticed it again.

PraiseTheFlaw 2026-02-25 14:50

Have you tried closing the trunk? https://preview.redd.it/ffur5iy0mnlg1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b05c98d3aa6e00c2ae49f3f20c4bf8f81165d2ea

On the frunk, this can happen when an object inside is resting against the open button.

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 14:52

It started off slow at first but it seems to be happening multiple times daily now. It seems like a software glitch

LSDBunnos 2026-02-25 14:52

Thanks, I’ll check to see if there’s anything hitting it but I don’t believe so.

Investman333 2026-02-25 14:58

…have you tried…. Restarting the car? Hold both scroll wheels

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 14:58

Yea I did a restart and a software re install just to be sure

PresentAd9429 2026-02-25 15:00

Create a service ticket, I’m sure they can view some logs ?

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 15:01

Just did actually, thanks for the suggestion

Sucks for them, I will try that

TonedBioelectricity 2026-02-25 15:05

The emergency release button on the inside of the frunk is super easy to short on older cars, which will cause this exact issue. If a significant amount of water ever got into your frunk (and it's not a new Model Y), this is probably what's causing the issue. The fix is super simple! Just take off the emergency release cover and unplug the little board. The car won't throw any errors about it being unplugged and now if you kidnap someone in there, they can't escape! 😂

Comfortable-Car-7298 2026-02-25 15:13

Do you have a widget for the car on your phone or watch? I accidentally hit the preconditioning button on the widgets, took me a while to figure out whats happening.

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 15:17

Nope

NonEuclidianMeatloaf 2026-02-25 15:17

This happened to me on my 2024MY. Service centre replaced the entire switch mechanism and no more problems.

phatrogue 2026-02-25 15:18

I had a 2020 Model 3 and the wiring harness from the trunk lid to the main body of the car had trouble that caused problems with the license plate lights and other functions. I could easily imagine this could cause a false press to unlock the trunk or a false indication that the trunk was open. I would recommend a service request.

sevargmas 2026-02-25 15:29

Note the exact date and time. Make a service appointment, and they can find the logging for what triggered it.

True-Captain6503 2026-02-25 15:30

Tu as pas installée les Enhance S3XY bouton ?

dantodd 2026-02-25 15:32

Dumb question, but is it actually opening or just saying it's open?

younkoda 2026-02-25 15:33

Remove the frunk from the quick access on the app.  It's a long standing bug with the mobile app.

True-Captain6503 2026-02-25 15:37

J ai rencontré le même problème il y a quelques mois, le coffre s ouvrait aléatoirement j ai réinstallé complètement le système Enhance S3XY bouton et le problème a disparu.

goodvibezone 2026-02-25 15:44

Hold and swipe to get rid of the referral banner

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 15:45

No, nothing

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 15:46

It’s actually open, I don’t have automatic trunk opener but someone could walk by and push it up

Expensive_Mission631 2026-02-25 16:46

Happened to me as well today!

NatKingSwole19 2026-02-25 16:49

I’ll get trunk notifications if my trunk liner slides out slightly causing the trunk to not latch properly.

Reasonable_Wing2733 2026-02-25 16:53

Had this happen to me. It’s part of the bug with the mobile app/short cut widget on Home Screen if you have iPhone. Remove it or rearrange so that trunk button is not on the far right.

oculus42 2026-02-25 17:05

Does someone else you share the car with or has access to it use a watch? I've seen a number of people accidentally open the trunk or frunk from the Apple Watch app.

MOB-CSD1540 2026-02-25 17:11

Change your Tesla password and email

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 17:38

Not really maybe my wife

Redstra 2026-02-25 17:49

It’s the widget on iOS. I had the same until I removed the widget / made it smaller without the trunk buttons

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 17:52

It seems like a software issue but for sure I have no contact with the phone and it just happens. Earlier today I was sitting in the car I did a scroll wheel reset and as it was booting up the trunk just opened

EnticinglyPurple 2026-02-25 18:20

Are you a recently fired middle age equities trader who was recently divorced and decided to start stealing his rich neighbors things to pay for his extravagant lifestyle?

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 18:22

Time to lay off the crack bro

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 18:50

Nope

jaywham 2026-02-25 19:42

It actually took me a lot longer than I'd like to admit to figure that out. I got genuinely so frustrated seeing (essentially) ads in my app every time it opens. Never bothered to try to get rid of it, just lived with the anger hoping to wait out the promotional period.

GizmoSwd 2026-02-25 19:42

![gif](giphy|c23OB3KN3lnKo) Check to make sure the deck lid is not getting caught on the flux capacitor.

SucreTease 2026-02-25 20:20

I had that problem once right after washing my car at home with a pressure washer. It opened probably three times before I finally just locked the car, which stopped it. The problem was gone a day later and I concluded that I had gotten water into the locking mechanism, which artificially triggered the open switch. I avoid pressure spraying around the switch now.

LanPhantom 2026-02-25 21:21

Can you still use the app to open it? Or is it just the mechanism inside the frunk?

Mysterious-Dark-11 2026-02-25 21:28

Any shortcuts on you phone ?

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 21:28

No

Terrible_Tutor 2026-02-25 21:29

This freaks me out… like you can remotely open the trunk when dog mode is activated. Im to scared to ever use the damn dog mode feature.

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-25 21:29

Update: I engaged with service over the app. It looks like they disabled the button to open the trunk by hand and it solved the self opening problem.

jpvAmiga 2026-02-25 21:30

I had the same after i installed the Apple Watch app. When i uninstalled it, it never happened again

cumaboardladies 2026-02-25 21:42

Wow my savior, I hated that banner ad…

bloodguard 2026-02-25 22:10

I've come out to find that my back windows are open about 3 inches. I'm not opening them. No sentry alerts. Starting to wonder if Grok is messing with me. I have "close windows on lock" enabled too. /s on the Grok thing. It's happened before (and since) it's been available. But something weird is going on.

MaachaQ 2026-02-25 22:38

Our Model X had this a couple months ago, trunk randomly opening all night long. It wouldn’t happen away from home, but at those times it was locked when parked. After a few days the trunk switch above the license plate completely failed. The service center was able to replace the switch under warranty, luckily we already had an appointment to replace the low voltage battery.

oculus42 2026-02-25 22:44

You can contact Tesla support and they may be able to check logs to determine why it opened.

masked_kulprit 2026-02-26 00:15

Reddit try not to be obnoxious challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

Rare-Network-5111 2026-02-26 00:41

I know it sounds a little bit stupid but.. there is nothing that could press the button inside your trunk ? I had the same problem with my frunk and the cable that i left there pressed the inner button so it opend up sometime.. took forever to find that problem..

wiredbombshell 2026-02-26 01:24

Hey at least you car didn’t randomly decide the HV Battery requires replacement. Fml

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-26 01:25

Been there done that

wiredbombshell 2026-02-26 01:32

Idk what happened either. Drove to college, car was fine, I comeback after class and now it’s a 8.5k bill to fix. New car time I guess

InteractionTiny6575 2026-02-26 01:33

I replaced mine through a third party with an almost brand new battery. The car had better range than new after that

10xMaker 2026-02-26 02:17

Happened to me one time. I have a power frunk. So imagine that. I felt like car was possessed for a minute.

Professional_Law7164 2026-02-26 04:40

itzchurro_ 2026-02-26 08:29

I also had this issue and the trunk opened on my garage once. I never figured it out, but made sure nothing obstructed the trunk from opening so it wouldnt happen again. I don't have the car anymore though so not much of an issue

Present-Ad-9598 2026-02-26 14:17

This happened on my 2018 a couple years ago, the plastic shelf to the left and right of the latch (bottom of trunk) was sticking up slightly causing the trunk to close enough to register as closed, but not enough to actually latch shut

NilocTheWarrior 2026-02-27 04:30

You're my hero today, kind redditor.

TonedBioelectricity 2026-02-27 16:55

Doesn't affect frunk opening besides the emergency release button
