2026 Model Y vs 2023 Model Y (HW4)

jmutiny1993 | 2026-02-25 05:39 | 29 views

Alright boys I was very close to buying the 2026 RWD Premium today but having second thoughts.... I was looking at some used 2023 Y's with HW4 and they are in the $36k (with tax/fees) range whereas the new Y is $51,500 (with tax/fees). Is the $15k increase worth it for the new car? I'm going to be purchasing either option in cash full, I won't be financing as I don't practice interest. Here are some of the used ones I was looking at https://www.tesla.com/my/order/7SAYGDEE7PF800190#overview https://www.tesla.com/my/order/7SAYGDEE9PF799639#overview https://www.tesla.com/my/order/7SAYGDEE7PA196458#overview https://www.tesla.com/my/order/7SAYGDEE2PA194522#overview

I am in the same boat as you, an important distinction is the new ones don’t have autopilot in them (which sucks) Personally waiting for March end deals if any

WeaponsOfMath 2026-02-25 05:47

Buy a used 2026 with AutoPilot. Save on the fees. Get a good deal, and have auto pilot. Some AWD are around 44-46k pre tax

Melchizedek_Inquires 2026-02-25 05:49

I have both, I like both. The Juniper is nicer, but neither should disappoint.

charliegumptu 2026-02-25 05:57

do all 2023 Y's have HW4?

Drum_Some 2026-02-25 06:15

No, HW4 came out mid-year. You can Google the exact date but I think vehicles manufactured after June 2023 have the updated hardware.

sussus_amogus69420 2026-02-25 06:16

shouldn’t be buying new unless it’s HW5, you can get used junipers nowadays

grogi81 2026-02-25 06:17

I would 100% get a HW4 2023 Model Y and save money, but what Tesla is asking for them is stupidly expensive. 30% depreciation is during first year, not over three years... 2023 is a 25k car, maaybe 30k. 36k is ridicolous.

MisterBumpingston 2026-02-25 06:27

The ride comfort and sound insulation in the refresh are almost night and day compared with legacy. Consider secondhand refresh if you find one.

CandyFromABaby91 2026-02-25 06:56

I would get a 2023 HW4 if it’s under $30k. Slightly over if it has FSD. Otherwise go new. $15k difference is worth it for a brand new car with a facelift.

xGenAc25 2026-02-25 07:32

What’s so good about autopilot anyways? Don’t see anything good about it smh..

FLawless______ 2026-02-25 07:48

And ventilated front seats, acoustic glass, 15 speakers 2 subs, 16” front screen, a rear screen, better suspension, and do i keep going? :)

ctzn4 2026-02-25 07:54

It exists and it is a decent enough to use for most highway duties. If ~20k economy cars come standard with land keep assist, there is no reason (beyond profit and subscriber numbers) that a ~$40k Tesla capable of driving itself doesn't come with such a feature as standard.

vassman86 2026-02-25 07:58

This is it for me too. But after an overnight test drive, the sound insulation is what is moving me towards buying a juniper. I love the improved suspension, but the cabin is so damn quiet on the highway compared to my 23 M3

MTheNomad 2026-02-25 08:54

Check the used ones for 2026 too before you make your final decision

Presence_Academic 2026-02-25 08:56

It’s a good stopgap for expressway driving if you aren’t getting FSD.

Presence_Academic 2026-02-25 09:13

You need to factor in how important the better suspension, quieter cabin etc are to you. Test drives required. Then you have to think about how long you want to own the car. Finally, you need to consider the impact having an extra $15k on hand would have on your lifestyle, present and future.

ddr2sodimm 2026-02-25 10:52

Gotta wait tho’

LaithovariuS 2026-02-25 11:03

I believe only the model 3 has 2 subs. The model Y only has one.

MisterBumpingston 2026-02-25 11:45

I have a 2022 pre-comfort (I missed out by 5 months) and put up with the firm suspension. Just did the retrofit and it’s nice, but not Camry nice. Now the sound is annoying me.

CompetitionTight6190 2026-02-25 11:48

It seems you making an apples to oranges comparison. All your used cars are AWD while for Juniper you are looking for is RWD. Curious to know the reason. Is it the price point? The performance in these two variants are different.

biggestfoots 2026-02-25 11:54

Last October I bought a HW4 23 MYP for 30k that had 32k miles that I traded in a car for and paid the difference in cash. To me, the 26 model is nice but not that much nicer. It’s a few things you don’t get with the older model but i just wanted HW4 and a performance model. With that saved money I can always change the suspension and add interior lights ect… but that’s just me.

vassman86 2026-02-25 11:55

I'd totally buy a used 2026 w/AP, but there are none available in Ontario (Canada) at the moment.

FLawless______ 2026-02-25 11:57

You’re right. I only has one. Now i’m mad 😆

Loading1984 2026-02-25 12:28

Have you factored in your total cost to pay for the car? You need to look at what the interest charges would be on the used one vs new. If you are in the USA you might be able to get 0% not sure what type of financing you'd be able to get on a used purchase.

Loading1984 2026-02-25 12:31

Seems good until you factor in 0% financing on new.

textisaac 2026-02-25 12:52

You clearly haven’t used it before. My wife got so addicted to my car we had to buy her a Tesla too lol.

the-supreme-mugwump 2026-02-25 12:53

I think Fremont builds with 7 seaters got hw4 later in the year so Austin VIN more likely to have HW4 as a 23.

beckpiece 2026-02-25 12:58

Refreshed models are light years more premium in feel and quality than legacy.

sgrinavi 2026-02-25 13:06

How long do you keep a car and how much time do you spend in it?

kevtke194 2026-02-25 13:09

I am looking to sell my 2023 MYLR HW4 for a new 2026 MY Premium AWD. I am only getting $30K trade in for it. I’ll meet you in the middle and sell it to you for $33K cash. 🤣🤣

Turtleguycool 2026-02-25 14:14

Are you financing? Hard to beat the interest rate on new ones right now

tjhomes2022 2026-02-25 14:45

They are shipping HW4.5 only we still have to wait for 5. It will probably come with the robo taxi

CinquecentoX 2026-02-25 15:12

I think I’m selling my 2026 MY AWD (2,100 miles on it) purchased the day before they removed Autopilot. Any idea what I can get for it?

grimmjoww1983 2026-02-25 15:16

I think 2023 AWD are selling for around 30800 on Tesla right now

WeaponsOfMath 2026-02-25 16:25

2026 are starting to pop in the market a bit by people who probably just got influenced by the tax credit

Murky_Search8236 2026-02-25 17:41

HW4 all day

alndlc8 2026-02-25 20:24

I have held off on the upgrade due to the current front suspension “clunk” that a large Juniper population is reporting

jmutiny1993 2026-02-26 00:19

2nd hand refresh is only like $3k-$4k cheaper, rather just pay that and get new

Queasy_Movie_885 2026-02-26 00:30

Get standard y 2026 with 0% finance

Historical-Bug-7536 2026-02-26 05:54

I don't "practice interest" per se, either. But, at 0.99% interest, I'm making more in my saving account so it's just throwing money away. Unfortunately, I'm waiting to see if any better deals on the Performance come out between now and March 31 when FSD transfer ends.

WiseMousse 2026-03-01 23:07

Then buy from someone other than Tesla 🤷🏼‍♂️
