Tesla has officially broken me twice. Model Y AND Cybertruck. I am the human embodiment of "buy high."

RADsysadmin | 2026-02-23 01:14 | 302 views

Bought my Model Y in early 2023, feeling good about life. Then Tesla slashed prices by up months later. Okay, fine. Lesson learned... right? Wrong. Fast forward, I pick up a used Cybertruck. Feeling like I finally played it smart going used. Then Tesla just drops a brand new AWD Cybertruck at $60K....a $20,000 price cut...and Cybertrucks have already depreciated from peak used values. I am **upside down on both vehicles.** Let that sink in. *I still genuinely enjoy both cars. The Model Y is a great daily, and the Cybertruck is unlike anything else on the road. But financially? I am a cautionary tale with two Tesla logos.* Is there some kind of support group for people who have the worst Tesla timing in history? Asking for myself. 😭

True dat, cars all usually gain value.

imacleopard 2026-02-23 01:19

Can you hear that? That’s me playing you a sad song with the world’s smallest violin… Performative and gloaty af

jcmustin12 2026-02-23 01:19

Cars are, generally speaking, horrible horrible investments. EVs even more so

Salty-Hat-3994 2026-02-23 01:19

You got a premium cybertruck... so you got all the bells and whistles. I'd prefer that one over the basic one.

renfang 2026-02-23 01:20

Teslas are some of the highest depreciating vehicles you can buy. Almost zero chance to not be upside down. If you want resale value buy a toyota.

chfp 2026-02-23 01:20

This is a you problem. Impulsive buying rarely ends well

imacleopard 2026-02-23 01:20

Yeah my 2010 corolla is up 234% from MSRP. It’s my retirement plan

no-tenemos-triko-tri 2026-02-23 01:20

It's tough because you never know at the point of purchase if you did get a good deal, and that's the small risk you take. Just enjoy the car and try not to think about it. Tesla will always offer deals. I say as long as you qualified for the tax credit and purchased before it expired, you got a pretty good deal there.

ramsesny 2026-02-23 01:22

You and me both. I think I spent 67K or so after taxes on my Model 3 LR back in Feb 2022 lol.

Touch_This_Skin 2026-02-23 01:24

Ok-Improvement-3670 2026-02-23 01:25

How

sharklasers805 2026-02-23 01:25

I feel your pain (as a fellow 2023 MYP owner). Just planning to keep it forever to maximize the depreciation curve. Or until I find some new shiny thing to obsess over.

SubieSTI360 2026-02-23 01:26

I don't think there is any way around it. I just bought and haven't even received it yet. But just looking at prices of the models fall like a rock at an alarming rates. My budget was could only get a 2023 M3P.. the 2024 was 12k more!! I decided to get the 24 because of the highland update and HW4.. but I'm sure HW5 will drop in a few months and I'll be behind again.. I saw a 2019 S Plaid (maybe it wasn't called a plaid yet, but it was there highest model of that year) for 22k the the other day. A $100,000 car for not even a 1/4 of it's value after 7 years. Crazy!

farmerMac 2026-02-23 01:26

Eve then it’ll lose value. There’s no winning.

txreddit17 2026-02-23 01:26

Being upside down is not relevant. If you paid cash for both would you be upside down? Did you feel the cars were worth what you paid when you bought them? The only thing constant about Tesla pricing is that it always changes.

General_Diag4321 2026-02-23 01:26

Bought brand new, 2020 m3p, 2022 myp, then a few more new teslas but - keep in mind, we are not 2012 Model S customers. They are the embodiment of buy high. It costs to have teslas before everyone else. You’ll be fine, OP 🫶

TheTokenBanana89 2026-02-23 01:28

Seems like a bad plan to have 2 car payments on newer teslas. Why whine about it. If you couldn’t afford it you shouldn’t have bought. If you could then it shouldn’t matter. I don’t get it.

Ernapistapo 2026-02-23 01:28

Your CyberTruck is not comparable to the new base model. You have air suspension, much higher towing capacity, better sound system, and a rear screen just to mention a few features. If you don’t want or need those features, then yeah it’s a bummer you didn’t wait.

tigole 2026-02-23 01:28

Hahahaha.. try buying a Model S new.

FlyingDogemann 2026-02-23 01:28

U joke, but I considered getting a hybrid rav4 for 33k a couple years ago. I got curious and check last week, it’s still work 28k on the market while my car went down by half.

Omacrontron 2026-02-23 01:28

The other CT doesn’t have adaptive suspension, I can’t afford that one….or this new one now because I was a reservation holder for the original. So I got a 3 because the CT was delayed and now I can’t afford either CT >:( I will probably put myself in financial ruin to get one tho, I’ll just have to live out of it lmao.

JellyfishBig4643 2026-02-23 01:29

I’m going to buy a MSP or Cyberbeast after the depreciation hit. You don’t lose if you never sell, so just enjoy the ride.

darthvuder 2026-02-23 01:30

You bought a cyber truck bro. 95% of the world thinks it’s an ugly car so the resale value was near zero to start with

SymphoniusRex 2026-02-23 01:32

Cars are not an investment. They are a functional tool that you use, and replace in x number of years

Hashslingingcoder 2026-02-23 01:33

Just part of the game. It’s nothing different than buying say clothes at full price only for it to go on sale later or the stock market is another example. You bought/sold now only for it to either tank or increase in value later. Nothing to trip over!

AmusedAgder 2026-02-23 01:33

Brother, this is the case anytime you buy a new car without a sizable down payment or outright in cash

ramsesny 2026-02-23 01:34

Huh? They were going for 58K plus then, and New York taxes etc. My apr is 2.49% so that’s the benefit in that situation.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-23 01:34

This.

Ok-Improvement-3670 2026-02-23 01:34

How did you spend $67K on a M3LR? Is that CAD?

rsg1234 2026-02-23 01:36

Probably CAD and/or $15k FSD. I paid $70k for a 2022 MYP with EAP.

sublimevibe69 2026-02-23 01:36

Ouch. I got mine for free #comeup

sunny_tomato_farm 2026-02-23 01:37

Just pay them all off and you’ll feel better about it.

rsg1234 2026-02-23 01:37

Actually resale value of the CT is unexpectedly very good. I thought prices would be in the 40s by now.

privatepublicaccount 2026-02-23 01:39

Charmin got me again. I got a 24 pack of ultra triple double rolls, and would you know the very next week they went on a 20% off sale. I haven’t even finished 3 of the new rolls yet and I’m already underwater on them.

jennythevanilla 2026-02-23 01:43

We used to have one of those. Sold it used at the price we bought it new literally. But we were so happy that we got rid of it.

Vee_Twelve 2026-02-23 01:43

Just drive and enjoy both of your Teslas. Losses and gains are only realized when you sell. I’ve bought cars that I sold for more than I paid for them (due to luck more than anything thanks to buying juuuust before the pandemic and then selling them at the peak of the market) and of course all of the other cars I’ve had that have depreciated as expected. Whether I lost or made money didn’t affect how much I enjoyed or disliked the car itself. I’ve got a Model 3 and Cybertruck and love them both, especially the CT. The great thing is - especially with your CT - that you have running costs that are a literal fraction of a similar ICE truck. You could be pumping away hundreds of dollars in gas every month and oil changes every few months.

ramsesny 2026-02-23 01:45

USD, white seats, acceleration boost, NY taxes.

DrBob-O-Link 2026-02-23 01:48

Bud.. you knew what you were buying, you enjoy your purchase. So what if other people did things differently for less cost? I paid about $120k for my 2023 MX, and love it to death .. I gave 58k miles so far and can't imagine a better car. Now I could buy it , brand new, for about 1/2 what I paid. I still am delighted with my car . I plan to see how many big batteries I can run through before it all craps out. However, if HW5 or HW6 comes out, with undoubtedly a better body.. I may have to get another Tesla. I drove a CT for a loaner for a day and it was pretty interesting. Pretty big 😆but very possibly my next vehicle

McStimlock 2026-02-23 01:50

How much did you end up paying for the used CT?

insertuserhere123 2026-02-23 01:50

Where does this notion that the cybertrucks have depreciated a ton come from? Anyone reading this can check right now, I will personally send you $100 if you can find a cybertruck awd with less than 50k miles that is less than 65k. Most of them are around 70k with highish miles , even after the new one dropped. Crazy how this car has made people just not live in reality.

Automatic-Photo-4919 2026-02-23 01:51

While I 100% agree with your sentiment, the general consensus on the various Tesla subreddits tends to be the opposite. Redditors want the latest and greatest and then complain when they’re upside down. I buy cars to drive into the ground, not as investment opportunities.

Intelligent_Top_328 2026-02-23 01:52

Cars are not investments.

Nero8 2026-02-23 01:53

If it makes you feel better, I bought a 2020 Model 3 LR for around 45K in 2022 during the COVID supply shock 🫩

FlyingDogemann 2026-02-23 01:55

It’s a whole religion I swear. Thinking about getting a sub for the same reason but more driving fun.

Background_Snow_9632 2026-02-23 01:56

Oh boy did I take a BATH on a 2019 p100D in early 2021!! That was peak COVID - there are no cars - remember that? Embarrassing the price of that thing ….. 119K …. Sold it for 19K in 2024. Got a MSPlaid which we are also going to take a bath on - holy shit.

FLawless______ 2026-02-23 01:57

Yep exactly. One day they will stop buying new to avoid depreciation, and accept not having the latest and greatest. For Tesla though old is still way newer than everyone else.

Impossible_Month1718 2026-02-23 01:59

Accept it and move on. Doesn’t matter until you sell

Automatic-Photo-4919 2026-02-23 01:59

It seems most of the people who are on these subreddits are: 1. Purchasing new Teslas outright in cash, meaning they’ve already lost money the moment they’re driving the car off the lot (or gigafactory) 2. Leasing Teslas as they plan on getting a new one every few years. I feel those who finance new or purchase (finance or outright) used are more of a majority in these parts.

pkyang 2026-02-23 02:00

Who cares man, just drive the cars for the rest of your life. You were ok buying at those prices, and yes it suck’s that you bought high, but you got good cars. Just live your life and enjoy it. You have two fucking awesome cars you’ll be fine

STARR_X 2026-02-23 02:00

Buy and hold. They will be canceling the cyber truck and you will have yourself a unique vehicle just like S & X

kenriko 2026-02-23 02:02

The difference is just air suspension, a no rear screen, less speakers and the cloth seats (which are nice - had them in a X back in the day) Not worth the upcharge

rwb12 2026-02-23 02:04

I bought my model 3 in November 2022. 😭

charlie_xmas 2026-02-23 02:04

I had a similar experience but I like to think of it this way, the premium I paid was for my time; I my time was worth the cost to have it how and when I wanted the product.

Bright-Detective-358 2026-02-23 02:07

Hope you have GAP insurance.

x3nhydr4lutr1sx 2026-02-23 02:10

If cars are an investment, that means the factory fucked up and is building worse cars in the future than in the past.

BonusroosterJr 2026-02-23 02:10

Bought my 2021 model s refresh last year for $31k with 80k miles. We’ll see how i end up doing

East_Yellow8389 2026-02-23 02:13

My Tesla plaid I've probably lost more on depreciation then I've lost on most of my cars combined because I always bought used etc. That being said the plaid is 100% worth it! Of course I wish I had waited till it already depreciated but I just wanted it so bad. Maybe now that they discontinued them they will become collectors! Not lol.

OSUfan88 2026-02-23 02:13

Who said it was impulsive?

gtphilip76 2026-02-23 02:14

Isn’t the new price cybertruck only two motors and no back screen? So it’s not really the Same as your right or am I’m missing something

aloeballo 2026-02-23 02:20

To nearly always avoid this dilemma… buy used😅

Psyxhotik 2026-02-23 02:21

My 2022 Model 3 Performance cost me 79k. That included the 15k FSD. I don’t even want to look at what that would cost me at today’s prices. I rationalize it to myself that I do love the car and I drive very little. It still has under 30k miles on it. Barely needs maintenance. And they are supposed to last long? Not buying a new car until this stops working.

SIGNANDSELFIEFRAMES 2026-02-23 02:27

I got my Tesla 2.5 years ago in CAN and the prices dropped almost 20K 30 days later. I wanted the Y, but it was 92K when I bought the model 3 (I have loved the car though). I could have got the model 3 those 30 days later as it went down to about 6K more than what I paid for the 3 lol

indigojlo91 2026-02-23 02:29

I was feeling bad about my purchase in December now that the dickwad has dropped a 10-day promo but after reading how much is missing for that 20k and the fact that I leased it makes me feel a little less shitty about the decision.

Old_Presentation_477 2026-02-23 02:32

I hope you paid $2000 to upgrade your EAP to FSD, that’s what I did

indigojlo91 2026-02-23 02:32

I’m guessing you’re financing your car (if not I’m sorry for the assumption), but wouldn’t a CT only adds a few hundred bucks to your monthly and that’s enough to put you in financial ruin? Just trying to understand your logic.

rsg1234 2026-02-23 02:33

Sure did. Definitely a no-brainer at $2k

Low-Froyo908 2026-02-23 02:34

You should head over to r/wallstreetbets you'd fit right in.

indigojlo91 2026-02-23 02:34

I had that same logic when I bought my 2019 model 3 in 2023 and then the new one was released and I still got boned even though not as hard as most of the 2022-2023 new buyers. I’m about 2.5-3k upside down and I bought mine back in 2023 at the “bottom” of its appreciation. Just food for thought.

data4u 2026-02-23 02:35

I’d join this support group. 2022 MXP

GucciTokes 2026-02-23 02:36

timing the market is like attempting to catch a falling knife by the blade—you’ll almost *always* get cut

indigojlo91 2026-02-23 02:37

It felt big for a one day test drive. If you’re used to your MX you’ll get used to the CT in less than a day full day driving. CT turns and handles like a bloated Model S.

LowMolasses5658 2026-02-23 02:37

Hertz ruined the Tesla values when they dumped their whole fleet I bought a used 2021 M3 right before. It is still upside down despite paying more. I do believe it stabilized since than but the damage is done. The fact is, unless you keep it past your payment dates on any car, it's simply an expense, not an asset.

-T_Dick 2026-02-23 02:39

I did the same. September 2022 M3 and September 2025 CT. Peace to you brother 🤝.

indigojlo91 2026-02-23 02:40

Dual motors are the same but missing adaptive suspension, rear screen, better sound system, and way less towing capacity.

lionheart4life 2026-02-23 02:41

Don't even look at the depreciation on used. Worse than cars even.

SquisherX 2026-02-23 02:41

Of course it's compatible - you literally do just that in the very next sentence.

Jello_Local 2026-02-23 02:44

I feel for you! I bought all 4 of my Teslas with perfect timing! 2022 model y performance in April 2025 for 27k. Now worth $30k, 2020 model 3 performance in May 2025 for 24k, sold it for the same to quickly buy a 2025 model 3 performance for 43k new demo and reserved the new Cybertruck trim 2 days ago! I've been wanting the CT since August but something kept telling me to wait. Glad I did! I had resolved to buy one at the end of March for any end of quarter perks. I'll take this one though!

ThaiTum 2026-02-23 02:45

I pretty much consider the money gone the second I buy the car. They depreciate to practically nothing eventually. In general, you made the best possible decision based on the information you have at the time. No point in feeling bad about it.

soupdawg 2026-02-23 02:46

Were you planning on selling them to make money?

Jello_Local 2026-02-23 02:46

This. A coil suspension is preferred in my book. Adds to the longevity. You can add airbags to the back for towing for far less than 20k. Just about everything is resolvable. The sound system, the vault, the wheels, payload and tow, rear screen (added one to my model Y), rear light bar, Even cooled seats.

frijoles84 2026-02-23 02:48

No down payment? Why would you ever finance a vehicle entirely. You can’t predict the future, it is what it is :) I got in a Y and picked it up the last day of 2024 before the refresh. I wish I had the suspension of the new Y and waited a few months. I know I can get it fitted to mine, but meh, I don’t know if that’s worth the 2-3k it’ll cost

Salty-Hat-3994 2026-02-23 02:49

All of which are worth it to me

sevargmas 2026-02-23 02:59

My wife bought a M3 Standard in 2022. She paid more for hers than I paid for a MY LR in 2023.

sevargmas 2026-02-23 02:59

We all know that. That doesn't really have anything to do with what OP is talking about.

sevargmas 2026-02-23 03:00

They didn't say they couldn't afford it, just that their timing feels repeatedly terrible.

sevargmas 2026-02-23 03:02

You're usually upside-down on a car. That's just the nature of car buying. But I get the sting of price drops. Feels like a kick in the nuts.

InTooManyWays 2026-02-23 03:04

Cars are not investments, they are depreciating liabilities.

Cyberdink 2026-02-23 03:04

Can't even give that shit away

baybridge501 2026-02-23 03:08

There’s a depreciating car, and then there’s a Tesla after price gaming. An extra order of magnitude.

Desperate-Review-727 2026-02-23 03:08

I don't get it.. If you buy the car, aren't you supposed to keep it for 7-10 years?? So why whine about depreciation? And if you're not keeping the cars that long, then you should be leasing.. So maybe just stop buying cars as an investment when Tesla's whole mission all along has been to make these cars more and more affordable.

baybridge501 2026-02-23 03:09

Makes sense when you realize Elon doesn’t care about making cars he cares about using cars to fund building robots.

snownight77 2026-02-23 03:20

Cars are not investments because 95% of them lose value over time.

Mountain_Pie_8671 2026-02-23 03:28

You know the price cut is only for 10 days right?

Joew85865 2026-02-23 03:28

Paid 72k for my Model YP back in 2022, feel your pain 😭😂

DrBob-O-Link 2026-02-23 03:29

Yea.. I love my X. It feels bigger than the 3 and Y I rented..I'm sure I'd get used to it. And.. what the heck will Tesla be making in 5 years? I should get at least another 10 years on my X.. I'm not a trader... I run cars til they're worn out. 200,000 mi or more at least

stonknoob1 2026-02-23 03:32

The cybertruck was bought high but it’s a tax write off for the business. Life is gains and losses.

PurpleSausage77 2026-02-23 03:34

I try to buy at the bottom, or buy at areas of “support” if talking stocks. Usually make money on vehicles I zero in on. I feel I’ve bought the bottom of a Model S in my region. $17.5k cad or $13k usd, clean title, 75k miles. I plan to keep it long enough for the free supercharging and free connectivity to pay it down to net zero and then hopefully lasts a super long time as a money printer.

Kind-Development-269 2026-02-23 03:38

Used Teslas are starting to climb in value because the subsidies are not there to drag the price down. Just hold them and they should bounce back eventually.

dude_where_is_my_car 2026-02-23 03:39

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Low-Inspection-6099 2026-02-23 03:41

Let us know when you buy your next Tesla. I'll wait a month after that to buy one.

Master-Journalist888 2026-02-23 03:49

“I’m upside down in both vehicle, let it sink in” jeez, go buy a Rolls-Royce, you will learn what “upside down” really means. Welcome to life where the moment you buy a car you are upside down. Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Tesla Y is upside down moment you take the delivery. How much upside down is the question, the rest is drama.

shasbak 2026-02-23 03:53

Been leasing for 16 years … never buy ever! It’s a depreciating investment and I pay for the time I use it and drop it back in their lap 😇👍 never shop or price check after buying it’s the same on housing… I probably lost 200k on one home so it’s just a timing game.

Ancient-Sandwich9400 2026-02-23 03:56

Who cares. You needed/wanted them, could afford them and bought them. Stop worrying about what happens after that. Enjoy/use what you have and live life. I don’t understand why people are always looking at what is going on after buying something. Sucks that you might have gotten them cheaper but what does it matter now?

binhoboys 2026-02-23 04:02

You broke yourself, stop blaming Tesla. Literally bought the most hated car from the most hated brand and are now surprised that it depreciated/ had a price cut. If you bought anything other than a used y or 3 and didn't expect to be majorly depreciated you did not do nearly enough due diligence before making that bit of a purchase.

Viviceversa 2026-02-23 04:07

Why buy things you don’t need

Sweet-Mechanic4568 2026-02-23 04:12

Say it with me now…… Cars are not investments. They are tools to be used for transportation.

JacksonDWalter 2026-02-23 04:22

Yup. My father-in-law recently got a used 22 Mercedes EQS with nearly 18,000 miles for $36,000. They start around $104,000 and go up to $145,000+ new. Just insane depreciation, but a great value used.

savedatheist 2026-02-23 04:24

Vehicles are depreciating assets. Even if depreciation is steep.

SUPREMEISDEAD 2026-02-23 04:27

What made you come up with 95% lol. Most Cars lose 30% in the first 2 years but EVs lose pretty much half.

Michael-Brady-99 2026-02-23 04:31

The new $60k cybertruck is not an apple to apple version to yours. Being underwater on cars is pretty normal especially with the interest rates being up. Only thing you can d o sí keep them and pay them off and get the max use out of them. Like stock, you only lose if you sell ;)

snownight77 2026-02-23 04:33

That’s still losing value, hence why I said 95% of current cars are going down not up.

Michael-Brady-99 2026-02-23 04:37

Yeah, the book value changes nothing about your day to day life. You make the payments you agreed to until you are paid off. At some point you will owe nothing and the car will be worth some amount of money.

njzhitman88 2026-02-23 04:37

Sh*t happens, coming from buyer of ultra peak 2022 Model Y prices lol - but be smart with the cars you have, rack up the miles and try your best to enjoy the toys vs worry about the price action.

Kenju4u 2026-02-23 04:46

Use it till it runs to the ground and you are good. Not a smart move cause it hurts you financially even if you can afford it. It’s just burning money but get the maximum use out of them so you can recoup your money.

Thegreatpraduu 2026-02-23 04:58

I think you just got unlucky twice. you bought 2 trendy vehicles from a company that introduces trending vehicles and moves fast. if you bought from a legacy automaker that moves slow like a traditional automaker and introduces new trims on a predictable timeline, I dont think you would've bought at the peaks on both instances. but then you'd also be driving vehicles that arent as trending (likely a toyota). and you are enjoying both vehicles. if you are doing okay financially, or have gap insurance, I'd say just forget abt it & enjoy your cars. cheers.

Hollowbound 2026-02-23 05:09

I financed a 2017 Civic Si for $27k and paid it off in 5 years. In 2022 I traded that car in for $23k to get a brand new car. I mean it only had 38k miles, but still, barely lost money on it.

VermicelliFrost 2026-02-23 05:10

Don't feel bad. In 2019 I bought slightly used Model X with 5k miles for $105K OTD. Last year I sold it for $33K. Felt pretty shitty as I had never bought a "luxury" car and I had no idea they depreciated so quickly and so much.

Soff10 2026-02-23 05:36

Just be happy with the vehicles. You will never hit the low. Try as you might. There’s always another deal that will be cheaper than yours.

JDeLiRiOuS129 2026-02-23 05:43

I think of EV cars like iPhones. They’re overpriced the first year then significantly discounted the next. In reality you’re just paying for the new thing as soon as it comes out. I’d just wait it out before buying a new EV.

fratzba 2026-02-23 05:43

General production mass produced modern cars are not investments.

word-dragon 2026-02-23 05:57

Also the base model has less towing capacity, about 500 pounds less payload, and no ventilated front seats. Not sure all that adds up to $20k for me, but it might for some. For me, I just hate the look, so really wouldn't buy any of them. Maybe it will grow on me, but I doubt it.

Bnwrich16 2026-02-23 05:58

The new cyber truck is not the same. Missing the screen in the back, the interior, the ventilated seats, the air suspension that goes up and down, and the towing of over 7500 pounds, which is not good, makes a big difference between that and 11000 pounds. In towing, rims are not as good, and tires are not as good. So, sadly, I can’t agree with you. Yours is the better truck. Be happy with it.

Username000-1 2026-02-23 06:09

I lost $14k in value in about 5 weeks. Bought a 2023 Model 3 RWD in Canada. A few weeks later Tesla dropped the price $5000. Two weeks after that the government added a $9k incentive. $14 grand in about 5 weeks with hardware 3. 😬 You’re not alone.

hydrastix 2026-02-23 06:22

You don’t buy a new modern car as an investment. It’s a financial pit into which you throw money. How much money you end up throwing into said pit isn’t up to you.

billionaireboysclubs 2026-02-23 06:58

Do you have free supercharging for life at least? https://i.redd.it/2da0snu007lg1.gif

deej628 2026-02-23 06:58

Less than half that lol.

SnooMaps2602 2026-02-23 07:09

Your estimate about 5% NOT going down in value is the one that seems wonky. Very, very few cars are collectibles that actually go up in value. Fractions of a percent is much more like it.

Winter-Crew-2746 2026-02-23 07:15

Are people actually buying the 60k CT?

coffeeoverlatte 2026-02-23 07:19

But you dont buy a tesla every 2 months....

snownight77 2026-02-23 07:30

Yea, your probably right.

Chinaboy812 2026-02-23 08:13

Keep telling yourself that…

Creative_Effort2837 2026-02-23 08:21

So if you happy with your purchases why worry? Everyone knows vehicles are not assets. Enjoy them till they can’t be enjoyed anymore.

bidextralhammer 2026-02-23 09:07

Feeling you with the 75k 2022 MYP

LanceFaywood 2026-02-23 09:42

Got to love when self proclaimed financial gurus in the comments ALWAYS have to say “cars are not investments they are depreciating assets” Well no shit Sherlock! Did OP say this was an investment? Everyone in the world knows a car/truck isn’t an investment. Yet you gurus always think you are so smart by stating such an obvious fact! OP was talking about the pricing shenanigans and the accelerated depreciation that is happening with his vehicles. So all OP is trying to say is his cars are depreciating a lot faster than let’s say a Toyota or a Honda or something similar. Nothing more or less.

m_jax 2026-02-23 09:50

Same

seanocono22 2026-02-23 09:52

Fool me once… Tesla got me once with a X Plaid, but I’ll never buy another Tesla again.

TrollTollCollector 2026-02-23 10:30

EVs, just like any tech consumer product (laptops, iPhones, etc), depreciate sharply in value over time. The CT price dropped by $5k just a couple weeks after I got mine. This is why I think it's better to lease EVs than buy.

JustTryinToLearn 2026-02-23 12:12

EVs are known to depreciate faster than ICE vehicles. What OP is complaining about is one of those things you probably should have thought about before buying an EV. Doubly so for Tesla since there prices are always fluctuating due to musks shenanigans and deals being offered.

Yup, timing sucked!

Suitable_Switch5242 2026-02-23 13:26

The new $59k trim does have the vault cover and in-bed power ports.

PastTall9331 2026-02-23 13:52

The tissue market has been in the toilet for years!

Successful_Point_44 2026-02-23 14:05

How does this not have more upvotes

One-Twist8044 2026-02-23 14:28

I feel you! I have the same feeling but at least you are enjoying what you paid for, it's just financially so disappointing when they drop the price. At least with the Cybertruck, Tesla didn't cut 20k on premium AWD like they did on Model 3 and Y...

sidibid1 2026-02-23 14:35

The vault is the underbed storage. It is not the bed cover which is the same on all versions.

Semi_Retired_001 2026-02-23 14:36

I would kinda like the vault and the fancy stereo

Semi_Retired_001 2026-02-23 14:38

I just want to thank you for taking the hit and say I’m sorry dude! But a model y and a cybertruck, you’re kinda winning, right?

Suitable_Switch5242 2026-02-23 14:41

Tesla has referred to the whole truck bed with motorized cover as the "vault": > Add a payload of up to 2,500 pounds to your truck bed and use the lockable motorized tonneau cover to secure whatever you can fit inside, turning your truck bed into a six-foot vault. https://www.tesla.com/cybertruck The previous discontinued RWD base trim did not include that cover. But yes it seems like this new base AWD does not include the under-bed storage compartment.

Ok-Improvement-3670 2026-02-23 14:42

Wow! I wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on that.

Far_Machine_4458 2026-02-23 14:43

Cars aren’t investments. They’re tools. Sometimes you get screwed money-wise, but if you buy with the idea that you’re going drive it until the wheels fall off you’ll almost always get your money’s worth. Advertising is more powerful than ever now. Every schmo who buys a Tesla starts a YouTube channel to try to get you to buy Chinese accessories. And slobbers over how great the cars. It doesn’t matter if they are great, when every social media platform is targeting you because you thought about a Tesla or a TV it makes TV advertising look like cave painting. What, they can only try to sell you a car for 60 seconds? How quaint. You’ve been targeted for maximum FOMO. Just enjoy the cars and remember there are some folks who can’t even afford bus fare.

Far_Machine_4458 2026-02-23 14:45

If you’re buying a 24 pack of TP every 2 months you should get that checked out.

Far_Machine_4458 2026-02-23 14:46

I’m sure the folks who bought my MY 5 years ago are pissed I just paid $19k for it, but hey, dems da breaks.

Omacrontron 2026-02-23 14:52

The monthly plus the increase in insurance on top of the 15% I’d put down again? Yes absolutely :(

RADsysadmin 2026-02-23 14:55

Thank you.

Flashy-Bandicoot889 2026-02-23 15:00

That's the risk with financing these vehicles for 73 or 84 months.

word-dragon 2026-02-23 15:10

Yes, even though I don’t like the look, I kinda decided if I got stuck getting one, I’d probably go for the middle trim. A lot of little things and a few big ones.

OldAFDog 2026-02-23 15:23

Why all have our limits when it comes to EV’s, and the market has been saying proceed with caution

bananabeanssalad 2026-02-23 15:23

You pay to make it go away

sidibid1 2026-02-23 15:24

Just saying what Tesla Bellevue Square rep told me.

pretzelgreg317 2026-02-23 15:50

Fast Forward to december 2023 and I got a Model 3 after inventory discount and fed state rebates including all taxes in New York for under $30,000 Was so happy with the EV/Tesla life that I bought a 2024 Model Y, again at the end of the year (2024) and got the incentives and rebates again. This time about $36K out the door but with zero percent interest. Little bit of luck, a lot of strategic planning. Love my cars hate what the brand represents.

cmdr_ed 2026-02-23 16:20

Just enjoy your cars.. no way to recoup that money. Save your money for when the chinese cars hit the usa or when Ford’s skunkworks builds a hot new Ev class to compete with the chinese

angrypoopoolala 2026-02-23 16:33

tesla cars are like their stock you have to AVERAGE DOWN if you bought too high and HODL

ramsesny 2026-02-23 16:40

That’s what they were going for at the time, I had no idea Elon was going to cut the prices down soon after.

uwrotethatcrap 2026-02-23 16:58

I bought the 2023 MYP and then the price dropped. And then Elon sent me a check for the difference. And I didn’t ask for it. Very sweet deal.

CR8VJUC 2026-02-23 17:13

We paid $74k with FSD for our ‘21 MYP in March of 21. Within 2 years it had lost more than half its value and now i understand i can expect to get \~$20k for it. With HW3, all FSD updates have ceased and v12 isn’t dependable in city traffic. https://preview.redd.it/bkul1fsf1alg1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b92906c542e5ad124161f76ddad218087300a15

Dizzy-Stuff-1724 2026-02-23 17:15

In the same situation. Never have I purchased a car or cars with such a sheeety resale value. Model Y 2022 bought new for 60k with fsd that I never use. Just got a trade in value from Tesla @ 23k with 30k miles. Thinking of just keeping until it dies

jcmustin12 2026-02-23 17:16

That's 12 rolls per month, 3 per week, less than half a roll per day. If one person, sure, but if a household of 4 or 5?

MartyBecker 2026-02-23 17:35

I’ve never once checked the price of a TV after I bought it. But I know they would always be cheaper later. The best way to protect against this is to stop paying attention to the price after you buy.

Intelligent_Site8568 2026-02-23 17:55

Can you let is know when you’re back in the market? so we know when to buy our next Teslas…

Mikey_likes_it- 2026-02-23 18:00

Don't look at it that way. If you plan to keep them until they fall apart you will still come out fast ahead of an ice counterpart. Just be happy about that.

coffeeoverlatte 2026-02-23 18:07

Tell me you dont live with women in your household without telling me....

Herm611 2026-02-23 18:18

I'm just impressed you score a used one for a decent discount. Everytime I've looked the used are to close if not the same to a brand new one

Worth-Reputation3450 2026-02-23 19:11

Uhh.. how can you be upside down on a car that’s 3 years old?

Immediate_Hamster766 2026-02-23 20:12

The numbers don’t really matter until you plan on selling or trading them in, I would just keep enjoying the vehicle

Alucardis666 2026-02-23 20:54

Let me know what and when you are planning to by next please so I can wait 6-8 months after you to buy mine. Thanks :-)

Firm-Switch36 2026-02-23 21:12

you buy cars to drive them not for investment

Steinrik 2026-02-23 21:15

😂

ov3rw4tch_ 2026-02-23 21:48

You made a decision to buy both times. Cars are depreciating assets. If you enjoy your car stop checking the price drops.

monta1111 2026-02-23 22:25

Prices were bound to get slashed when all the part shortages were fixed. IDK anyone who thought it was a good idea to buy at that time.

rentien 2026-02-23 22:57

so, when i bought my 2023 model 3 performance (same thing, lost a lot of money) i planned to keep it a long time, and i compared it like this: 70K car minus 10 years of 2K savings in charging gets it to be 50K, so i got a performance for the price of a 3 series. That hasn't changed even though newer teslas are dropping in price. It only changes if you are considering selling your tesla(s). Are you considering selling or keeping long term or undecided? If you are keeping long term, other ppl may save more than you, but you will eventually still save.

WelcomeIndependent40 2026-02-24 00:41

Would you be upset if they raised the prices right after you bought it?

Big_Intern5558 2026-02-24 01:34

If you want an asset that doesn't depreciate you shouldn't look at a moderately luxury vehicle. A used Toyota Corolla is gonna hold its value a lot better than a Model 3 or CyberTruck.

WhoopDareIs 2026-02-24 02:44

Don’t worry. “It’s only for 10 days.”

king_weenus 2026-02-24 03:59

My 2022 m3lr was retail over $80,000 in Canada brand new... That's just base price plus taxes out the door if you paid cash no financing in January 2022. I bought it a year later for $30,000 off... With only 13,000 km or 8,000mi... I thought I got a steal of a deal. Here I am 3 years later and it's worth half of what I paid.. if I can even sell it.

DupeStash 2026-02-24 07:40

People paid 140k for Plaids

WriterOne8440 2026-02-24 12:52

It's crazy seeing the price of non LR models now... Have a buddy who bought a 2022 SR brand new and a few months back say yeah it was like $40k new, now it's probly only worth like $35k.... Feel bad for that guy lol

Teslaaforever 2026-02-24 12:53

When I buy a car, I never think about the money afterward because it’s always going to hurt. I like cars, and I never think of them as an investment it’s something I treat myself to for my hard work.

srp6 2026-02-24 12:56

I purchased my cybertruck then a few months later the interest rates dropped & offered free supercharging & a couple other things. It happens man they are trying to stay aggressive & competitive now that the rebates are gone

Jumpy_Implement_1902 2026-02-24 13:33

How does the saying go? Fool me once, something something, fool me twice, something else.

Accurate_Antelope408 2026-02-24 14:24

If buying a Tesla new lease it-you’ve locked in with the depreciation will be and you might pay a little more for it, but guess what it’s worth not having to worry about Elon‘s decisions on when he should drop Price – he could get up in the morning have a bad night of sleep and/the car by $10,000 and guess what the used Market bottom falls out

IJToday 2026-02-24 14:47

Buying an EV today is like buying a PC in the early 90s. It’s new tech that gets better faster than existing tech. It’s just the way it is, the way it has to be, and actually the direction you want the product to trend; better, improved, cheaper. Enjoy the rides and just remember that every consumer car sold new depreciates.

ericloz 2026-02-24 15:23

It depends on the individual.

NivekTheGreat1 2026-02-24 15:51

I’ll join that club. 2022 Model Y owner. $15k for FSD that they quickly cut in half. The price is also much cheaper. Bought my 3 on release day. Think they’re cheaper now, but that $2500 deposit that I almost lost because Tesla was so close to bankruptcy stung. Learned the trends so I waited for the 26 refresh X to come out, waited 2 months, and bought the last 6-seater in inventory on their site. Ended up saving thousands. So I feel like I finally got one. And now I have a collector’s item that I love. Still have the Y for the wife to drive.

Rocketstiltskin 2026-02-24 15:55

Buy more and dollar cost average until you break even.

Microwave_the_fungus 2026-02-24 15:57

Except they aren’t going to make any parts for it in 3 years from now when it’s nothing but history, and then someone taps your bumper and they total the car because the part is 70% ACV

acr42racing 2026-02-24 18:04

Let me know if you find the group I’ll join you! Upside down on 3 teslas here. My model s is worth 8k now and I have 20 k to go

privatepublicaccount 2026-02-24 19:50

I’m already long 6,000 rolls and my broker (Amex) has been calling. I just ignore it. It’s gonna rebound, I know it.

hahnsoloii 2026-02-24 19:55

And you pay to make more. It’s like they are selling us the poison and then selling us the cure meanwhile we all fight about single or double ply or forward and backwards roll. Each side thinks the other is monsters. So polarized.

Grand_Cat2882 2026-02-25 01:05

Hold up tho. You got a premium trim that is materially different than the AWD trim. This argument would hold weight if the premium was now 60k but that’s not the case.

Grand_Cat2882 2026-02-25 01:07

“Worth it” is a matter of opinion though I would tend to agree that Tesla attaches too high of value to these “upgrades”.

Nocturnx 2026-02-25 03:12

Something about shame and having to walk through a village naked I think

djmakk 2026-02-25 03:59

you took one for the team. I feel like I nailed the timing on my 2022 model 3 and then our 2026 model y.

Rocketstiltskin 2026-02-25 05:03

When shit happens, you will certainly be prepared.

Bresson91 2026-02-25 05:21

Just enjoy your cars.

CWStrife 2026-02-25 14:41

From what ive seen EV value tanks hard dont matter what it is. Couple that with extremely expensive EVs and a company who really is now showing its colors for profit over customer. Not saying all companies dont do it, but I was considering a model y myself until features got removed and i heard autopilot was gonna get removed, which it did, and FSD will at least double in price in the future, so i bought an EV from another brand personally and decided to lease so the depreciation isn't my problem at the end. I know that doesnt help you but i dont think your situation is unique. Hell I was upside down on the other car i had before. Eventually youll pay enough hopefully you have some equity or can break even and in the meantime just enjoy your vehicles 😁

Trynastaynice 2026-02-25 16:30

Bro. Why?

Tradetheday2093 2026-02-25 20:48

How much was your used CT? I don’t think it ever went that low in used to the point that made buying used more worth it. CT @ 1% Apr, $7500 off tax credit last year was amazing.

BD-Energy01 2026-02-26 08:32

That was me as well but luckily mines was a lemon and i got a full buyback

Inevitable-Lab-4719 2026-02-26 14:08

My son's WRX STI actually appreciated in value after 3 yrs. He did have the last year before the change the car. So that's the 5% I guess. My Mercedes lost 40% of its value in the same time period. 🤷‍♂️

whyitwontwork 2026-02-26 17:54

You don't lose money till you sell. If it's not a budget issue, just keep driving them till they're scrap value. Sunk cost.

Critical-Strength-86 2026-02-26 21:23

Join the club. I bought new…ordered in 2021 and got it a year later in October 2022. Proceeded to see discount after discount. Right now i have 158,000 miles on it, I owe about $22,000 and my car is worth about $14,000. It is what it is. Would’ve loved to have a lower payment but I’ll just ride this out for another year until it’s paid off

jemtat 2026-02-26 22:07

I only allow myself to be upside down on one car at a time.

Sal5435 2026-02-27 17:45

There is huge differences between the cheap truck and the more expensive one.

ramsesny 2026-02-28 13:59

You were very lucky!

SweetExpresso 2026-03-01 16:39

You don’t understand Elon enough. He is a businessman after all. Wait until you feel his desperation to sell the car, then you pull the trigger. Car is a depreciated asset. Remember this.

dryayo7816 2026-03-01 21:59

I just lease the New cybertruck Not sure if I am going to get it as This will be next year I will have all year long to decide to get this or a another model y

dryayo7816 2026-03-01 22:02

Or you can go upgrade ur seating to leather from a person that customizes those thing for 2000 or so

Plenty_Wolverine59 2026-03-03 02:10

I just debated SO hard but I am not going to FSD transfer right now. I'm going to wait and enjoy my car till i can't. I may miss out but what I won't do is regret spending 45k this year for something I don't really need.
