Upgrading panel and installing Tesla wall connector

decepticonlbc | 2026-02-22 17:27 | 18 views

Just got an estimate and wanted to ask the group if this is a good price or should I find other estimates.

Need more details, but since your service panel is being upgraded, the high price makes more sense.  I would say it looks like an ok quote depending on where you live.

ImportantBoot8945 2026-02-22 17:30

That’s a good price on the charger. Not sure about the panel. I think I paid $1500 for my charger and it was already discounted because I was getting solar panels at the same time.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 17:30

Also the upgraded panel will be relocated from the bedroom to the garage.

bartolo345 2026-02-22 17:30

Always get more estimates. Depending on location, doesn't look bad

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 17:32

Yeah I will do that. It’s a 1989 sq ft home and was surprised the owners didn’t upgrade their panel.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 17:34

Also forgot to mention he won’t charge me the tax. So it will be 7,963

Initial_Row_6400 2026-02-22 17:36

JESUS. That’s what TWO cost for us

AnonDuckroll 2026-02-22 17:38

I paid $800 last July for a local master electrician to install mine, but it also was not a panel upgrade/update. I’d get a second, or third estimate though for sure.

Flakarter 2026-02-22 17:38

No one can tell you if that’s fair or not. You need to get three quotes from electricians experienced in charger installations. I looked on Tesla’s website where they have a list of certified installers.

darkbladetrey 2026-02-22 17:39

The panel stuff idk. The actual charger installation and permit is reasonable.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 17:39

I’m in New Jersey 🤷

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 17:39

I’ll do just that thanks !

moduspol 2026-02-22 18:17

How are they planning to do that? I guess maybe what you're describing is that the new panel will be in the garage, and the one in the bedroom will now be a sub panel?

Mrsmokestack 2026-02-22 18:17

I was quoted $450 for charger installation. The entire panel, upgrading from 150 to 200A and installing the charger was $3450. That being said we did not have to relocate the panel, our install was in Georgia.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 18:22

The electrician told me since I’m upgrading the panel it would be possibke to relocate it to the garage. He did not mention the old panel on the bedroom would be a sub panel. He did mention the panel in the bedroom was ancient.

AJ_Mexico 2026-02-22 18:30

What's a "service health connection"? Consider whether if you opted for a 40 or 30 Amp line for the Tesla charger, you might not need to replace the panel. Your car would charge slower, but still charge overnight, probably.

moduspol 2026-02-22 18:38

I'm not a professional electrician but my concern is that actually "moving" a panel is usually unreasonable because the wires for all the different circuits go into it, and there's not really a feasible way to just make those wires longer. You can splice them together with new wires, but you need to do that inside an accessible box, which the panel already is. Anyway--it probably won't matter to you unless it is really important that the panel in the bedroom be gone. If it is, then it might be worth clarifying with the electrician. He may have said the "service" will be moved, which makes more sense. The big wire that brings power into your house will be in a different place. And it'll be a bigger wire. Or I could just be way off. And if so, certainly feel free to disregard!

Glum_Perception_1077 2026-02-22 18:38

Get more quotes. My house is larger and my panel is in the bedroom, my electrician said that he could just use the meter box to run my charger and was only charging 500, materials excluded. I did some research and found that this way works, ppl actually do it and it passes inspection.

Stivo887 2026-02-22 18:54

Gawd damn they’re raping you with that quote. I’d 100% shop around.

Stivo887 2026-02-22 18:56

I mean I paid 700 for a guy to not only hardwire my water heater on the other side of the garage but also install a 240 outlet, licensed. Unless that charger is 100ft away from his panel, that’s a scam quote.

Blazah 2026-02-22 19:40

that looks like a no go for me. I dont really need more than 110v though. Where is your dryer outlet?

rumjt 2026-02-22 19:54

Idk if it's been mentioned but you might want to look into a 60 amp breaker if you want to charge at 48a. It will have an effect on the quoted price.

gmanist1000 2026-02-22 20:07

I replaced my panel and installed a 60 amp breaker with a new cable run for the wall connector and it was $7800. I provided the wall connector.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 20:27

Same here I’m providing the wall connector as well. I will request the dedicated 60 amp as well.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 20:31

It’s located entering the house from the garage.

Blazah 2026-02-22 21:47

so for a few 100 you could use that plug instead, I dont think it's quite Level 2, but I use mine when I want it faster than 110v. I'd ask the electrician if there's a way to extend that line out to the garage, you'd have to remember to not run both charging and the dryer at the same time, but for me at least, I only use that plug when I really care about having it charge fully over night, which is very little. Usually 110 does just fine for my needs, which can be different than yours obviously.

SoggyAlbatross2 2026-02-22 22:10

Your quote is for a 50A circuit so make sure you ask for 60A. I didn't and mine is a 50A circuit and it works absolutely fine but.... might as well get 60

Balancedone_1 2026-02-22 23:13

Get more quotes, if you have a 14-50 plug in your garage I would just use that instead and save a ton of money.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 23:19

I still have to upgrade the panel. The current panel has not been upgraded since it was built 1980. Currently 100 amp panel.

decepticonlbc 2026-02-22 23:19

For sure thanks !

National-Suspect-733 2026-02-23 00:34

I paid about $2k to have my charger installed, but my issue was that my electrical service is on the porch in the back yard so they had to run 75 feet of 6 gauge romex through the attic to the garage.

TexFarmer 2026-02-23 03:12

I installed an $85 spliter box and an $85 extension cord from my 24A 240-volt dryer plug.

It is a j1172 plug, so I have to use a NACS adapter, but the power company doesn't offer any native NACS EVSEs. Plus... my first EV was an IONIQ 5... and this matched at the time. I have been temped to switch to a Tesla Wall connector, but I always stop myself because "this unit does the job just fine." 60 amp Square D breaker, 6ga THNN wires Flexible Conduit Metal pole straps Tapcons to screw into the block wall.

CousinEddysMotorHome 2026-02-23 11:25

I paid $400 for a charger install.

CaterpillarDramatic6 2026-02-23 20:47

Hi, we are a Florida family owned electrical business 904evcharge.com are you still looking for someone for installation?

decepticonlbc 2026-02-23 20:52

Yes but I am located in New Jersey.

WeFreeBastard 2026-02-24 01:09

Did your electrician know about Conectder meter adapter instead of a panel upgrade? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoQKOjhP0Og https://connectder.com/approved-utilities/

decepticonlbc 2026-02-24 09:02

I’m actually requesting a panel upgrade as well. This one has not been updated since the house was built 1980.
