Summon - Useful or useless?

ViewIn_Net | 2026-02-22 16:35 | 27 views

Every time I want to use Summon it’s not available: out of range or can’t use on public roads which sounds strangely. How do you you guys use it? Real use cases?

Only really use it when it’s raining and i don’t want to run across the parking lot to get it. Also has to be a not busy parking lot. Relatively straight shot to where I am. There’s too many things that have to be right for it to work well lol

It’s seems like it’s very limited comparing to how it was from the beginning…

I don’t think ASS has actually worked even 1 time for me. It gets confused and ends up stuck 100% of the time.

😆😁

I’ve used it quite a bit with 2021 M3, including busy Walmart parking lot. For some reason it will not work at my local Home Depot. Stopped dead halfway once and second visit it wouldn’t even begin. So at least 95% of the time it’s been really handy.

That’s what I’m saying … what’s Tesla idea behind this service as it’s sounds like useless service in current conditions ..

Don’t have ASS, but I use summon to move the car forward when I don’t have enough room to get behind it easily, or to move it out of the garage so I can sweep the floor, and then to move it back into the garage after sweeping the floor (mostly gravel driveway), without having to get into the car.

Smart enough!

Educational_Duty151 2026-02-22 18:25

In EU. I need to sit in the car to use ASS

ViewIn_Net 2026-02-22 18:42

Omg 😱 really!?? I didn’t know that, what a surprise))) and how do you use it being in the car 🤭

Educational_Duty151 2026-02-22 18:50

Sometimes just for fun. I work in a woman’s dominated field - and they can not drive. Sometimes I show them that the car can park itself, and drive out from a tight parking spot. If it sometimes work, when outside of the car - I use ass to drive it away from my passenger, and shout like the car have gone mad

Our garage is off a little side street that is not designated public, so I can use ASS to bring the car into the street mostly to show off, but also that action also confirms new software versions are working well for me. I use it in grocery store parking lots that are pretty busy; I just have to stay with the process and let it be cautious and aggressive as needed. I’ve done this literally 75-100 times, and only done ‘walk-of-shame’ 4-5 times. Use it at most any store parking lots that are; being able to see what the camera sees in the app makes it much better for me. Usually 150-225 feet away when I use.

Awesome real use case! Thanks for sharing!

Educational_Duty151 2026-02-22 19:47

Some use case - if you have kids. You Can stop with the backend sticking out of a parking spot. Take the kids out. And then move the car with summon Other way around. You can back the car with summon - and then set your kids in, and drive the car away

I use the legacy summon often to enough to make fine adjustments to my parking spot if I goofed since it’s quick enough. Every once in a while I pull the car out if it’s too tight to expect passengers to squeeze in between cars. Smart summon in current form is too unreliable and clunky.

gugino21 2026-02-22 19:57

I use it daily at work; well actually - 4 out of 5 times I try to use it. I do wish there was more range. Awesome/impressive feature when it works.

thiccest-boi-here 2026-02-22 22:06

summon is really useful when it works, for example I have two teslas in my driveway and being able to scoot one forward without getting out is nice, but at its current state, that’s about all I expect out of it.

More range, then more confidence, then not having to hold button down. It'd be so great to be checking out at the store with carryable bags, push come to door, walk out and the car pulls up. I get why it is the way it is now but can't wait for future updates

I can see it being useful for someone with mobility issues or medical issues, or maybe someone trying to wrangle a bunch of kids, or someone moving a bunch of stuff...but outside of those cases, I think it's stupid and just a party trick.

CousinEddysMotorHome 2026-02-23 11:54

Can definitely be useful.

CousinEddysMotorHome 2026-02-23 11:54

Regulation from a useless govt.

CousinEddysMotorHome 2026-02-23 11:58

This is roughly my experience as well.

Free_Donkey4797 2026-02-23 20:37

Summon worked great on my 21Y before it became ASS. I could park in the furthest out spot of the old closed up Winn Dixie and hold the button and it would safely navigate its way all around the lot to the front door of the store without issue. While I never used it in a crowded lot, I always thought it was a complete hoot that the car could do it. I did regularly called on it at church, to come up closer to the door on rainy days. Busy lot and all. No issues. Now a 100ft move across a completely empty unlined gravel parking lot is too much to handle as it “cannot find a clear path to you”. It refuses to do anything beyond back out of the parking stall at work because the rest of the parking lot is now somehow magically a public roadway. But it’ll happily try to go merge onto the fricking interstate when it gets confused in the rest area parking lot and can’t understand how to take the driveway from the toilets to where I’m standing at the picnic area. It’s ass….not ASS, but ass.

In my experience it worked before as Smart Summons, little flaky would drive in mid of the road rather than sticking to the right or left, in non marked roads (like parking lots). Now a days it refuses even to start when it’s on a named roads. If the road has a name it works (as described above).

Greg19931 2026-02-24 13:05

I use it when I manually have to open and close a gate. Let the car drive through. Also, after handwashing in a wash box, let it drive itself to the vacuum station.

Dense_Emergency6081 2026-02-24 17:15

I have kids so we use it often. Practical? Not really. But it is our thing until they are too cool to be seen with me around their friends.
