Torn between the New Base Model Cybertruck and the Model Y Performance

xtcjon | 2026-02-22 01:30 | 24 views

I always found the Cybertruck to be pretty cool but never saw myself affording it due to the higher price point but now that they were able to reduce the price by 20k and not strip down the truck as much as they did with the Rwd, you can see why It could be kind of hard to choose between the Cybertruck and the Model Y performance now that they are similarly priced. I would miss the screen for my kid, the ventilated seats, the 15 speakers + noise cancellation but I don’t see those as very necessary to have and other than that they didnt seem to strip down anything much important. I know Elon said this price would only be available for 10 days but I don’t believe that is true due to the Cybertruck not selling that well in the first place but anyway we’ll see. I will say that I loved the steer by wire, the space, the acceleration, and the overall truck feel of the Cybertruck when I test drove the Premium Awd version and you may have saw my previous post about the Model Y Performance but if you haven’t just know that I really loved it too but again it is a hard pick between the Base Model Cybertruck and the Model Y Performance for me. I am looking forward to test driving the Base Model Cybertruck and anyone doing a full on review on it. Which Model would you choose?

What are you planning to use the car/truck, if you forsee doing a lot of truck related work then get the cybertruck.

Blazah 2026-02-22 02:37

Model Y P would be my pick.

HeronOrganic3727 2026-02-22 02:50

The Y. Not even a second thought. Almost every Tesla social media influencer has had their truck bought back by Tesla. If even they aren’t pushing it, it’s trash

Wise_Abrocoma9822 2026-02-22 03:09

cybertruck without a doubt

Putrid-Box4866 2026-02-22 03:11

If I had space for parking the cybertruck, I would love to have that. Since I don’t, model Y it is.

Rule of thumb is buy the smallest car you can get away with. If you don’t have work needs or haul things constantly, there’s zero point in getting a pickup truck over an SUV (which is still overkill in size for many people who just drive themselves, their SO, and 1 kid around imo)

Fun-Sundae4060 2026-02-22 05:31

Do you need to do truck things or use it for power tools or anything? If not, there’s no point in buying a truck.

ComoEstanBitches 2026-02-22 05:31

Test drive both. In the same day. If you can deal with the public opinion, the CT is an amazing car

MYP. The Cybertruck is to polarizing for me, feel I’d come out of the grocery store with a milkshake thrown at my truck.

SE_MI_CT 2026-02-22 07:46

>Rule of thumb is buy the smallest car you can get away with. Can you really call it a "rule of thumb" when it's something you've made up and no one else has ever heard of?

MeasurementMother579 2026-02-22 07:51

Model Y Performance. While the Cyber may be cool, at the end of the day the Y Performance would be the better daily. Performance, sleekier, easier to park and maneuver. ALSO, in the event you need to sell it's a bit less polarizing.

Competitive_Round335 2026-02-22 12:28

Y. Unless you want to try to haul just a wee bit more. Just from aftermarket accessory options, the Y is a great choice. I have an X and there is nowhere near the options that my daughters have for their Ys.

ForeverMinute7479 2026-02-22 13:24

Sure— My rule of thumb… A little known rule of thumb… Our rule of thumb… My family’s rule of thumb…

ForeverMinute7479 2026-02-22 13:27

With no air suspension or hard Vault cover on the on the CT bed, no thank you!

TeslaLounge-ModTeam 2026-02-22 13:37

This post violates the rules of the TeslaLounge community.

I have one each. If I could only keep on?. Well, the MYP with it's tow capability can do many truck things and is more economical to drive especially on supercharger juice. Think of the short term pricing on Cybertruck as a call option with at least a 3 month expiration. Possible downside, really none as Tesla honors a lower price at delivery time. Upside? Potentially thousand of dollars saved in the likely event that price goes up in March. $59,990 is stupid cheap for what you get.

Feisty_Crab7052 2026-02-22 13:44

Free cyber truck is only way I’d consider that thing. Then I’d sell. Lol. Opinions vary of Course.

Onyxam 2026-02-22 13:59

Myp all day every day.

Unlikely-Buy-7356 2026-02-22 14:08

I love the CT, but the MYP will be a way better purchase unless you're needing a truck. 15 to 7 speaker jump alone is enough to make the CT feel like way less comfortable of a car. If you buy the base CT youll probably look to upgrade again soon.

Distinct_Physics2008 2026-02-22 14:14

Would the truck fit in your garage? If not, where would you park it? Do you care about your neighbors?

diatribe2018 2026-02-22 14:31

@teslalounge-modteam Really? Expressing a positive opinion about the Y and a negative opinion about the CT, while being respectful to the OP and addressing his question “violates the rules of the TeslaLounge community?” Which rule? Rule 1 about respect and participation? Yall gotta read your own rules https://preview.redd.it/iaelrm0w32lg1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bc2554dcb48672c0080a4d3097f2075a75865b5

AJHenderson 2026-02-22 14:31

So you need a truck? Then the choice is obvious. If not, the MYP will be a much nicer car but I'm not sure why you want to consider a truck instead.

Have a 2026 MY and thinking of switching to either CT or MYP on March 31 to transfer my fsd. CT is much roomier inside. Really nice. I am in the middle of a 10hr round trip (NY to VT to NY) and even though the car is driving perfectly, my seating position in FSD is no where near as comfortable in MY compared to CT. If I do most driving in FSD then CT is def better. MYP would also require new wheels when they get bent from potholes. CT is much more rugged. CT has blind spots that MY doesn’t have. Visibility in MY is top tier. Everyone and their mom has a MY which diminishes feeling good about the car IMO. CT steer by wire is amazing. CT utility, even though not needed, is such a nice to have. Throw anything in the bed, kids bikes, etc. MY fits 5, has tow hitch, and tons of storage without being oversized.

stanley_fatmax 2026-02-22 19:09

V2H is a huge differentiator IMO that would steer me towards the Cybertruck

TommarrA 2026-02-23 00:06

I just test drove the Y and Cybeetruck and they are entirely diffeeent cars (I have a 2020 Y so test drove Juniper) IMO unless you need a truck I would not buy cybertruck. Energy consumption is 40% higher than MY, it’s way louder interiors, there are too many compromises like the digital rear mirror, a very boxy claustrophobic interior, and generally a very heavy drive feel. MY is lot more zippy and quick in drive feel. Don’t get me wrong if I were to buy a truck I would go for CT but if you are looking for daily hauler MY would be my pick

Turbulent-Step-6504 2026-02-23 01:12

I had a model s plaid and went with the $80k cybertruck. Don’t regret my decision at all.
