No Autopilot on new cars, but still available on used - step backwards?

fastoid | 2026-02-21 21:58 | 98 views

Inside EVs recent article Now We Know Why Tesla Killed Autopilot mentions that 'Now, it's important to point out that Tesla didn't have to remove Autosteer from its cars as part of the Autopilot branding change. But it still did..." A quick check: new inventory cars don't have neither Autopilot nor Autosteer, just an FSD 1 month trial. Used inventory cars still listed Traffic aware cruise control and Autosteer. That's kinda sad 😢, the free Autopilot was a great feature, that spurred the industry to dramatically improve the dumb cruise control, and now the pioneering company has to part with it... Or use it as an excuse to push the FSD subscription? https://insideevs.com/news/787656/tesla-autopilot-california-dmv-marketing/

Over a month late to this conversation.

fastoid 2026-02-21 22:11

Hmmm, maybe, the article is from Feb 18... Frankly, I was relieved they kept it for the used...

jigglybilly 2026-02-21 22:21

The article is “reporting” on old news.

fastoid 2026-02-21 22:30

The CA deadline was Feb 17, good they kept the Autosteer for the used. In the pursuit of the FSD subscription numbers they could've nix the used too. They didn't, and I think it's a good thing.

Omega2307 2026-02-21 22:35

I might just have to cancel my order. Ordered my MYP since Nov 21st they released the VIN fonally today and they confirmed it doesnt come with Autosteer

fastoid 2026-02-21 22:53

Shame on them! What does your purchase agreement say?

Onyxam 2026-02-21 22:59

My question is, will this cause a ripple effect in the industry causing other manufacturers to also drop auto steer and bar it behind a paywall. Often when one sheep jumps the ditch the other follow.

fastoid 2026-02-21 23:03

Valid concern. Free Autopilot/ Autosteer was a big differentiator and kind of benchmark for others... Paywall sucks... The big hope is that the other OEMs are not that fluent with over the air updates and it's difficult for them to toggle easily...

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-21 23:24

You’re just looking for attention - this is old and we knew then it was staying on non new cars

breadexpert69 2026-02-21 23:24

Used Tesla prices will go up

fastoid 2026-02-21 23:30

Me?!?! 😂 LoL I'm way past that age 🤣 but thanks 👍 I just don't follow the news and Reddit that close, but was thinking about a used car for my youngest, and liked the Autosteer feature...

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-21 23:32

Figured you’re old, hard to keep up with the times right? Crazy to thought it was so new that you posted later

fastoid 2026-02-21 23:34

Happy now? 😁 Pat yourself on your back!

thunderslugging 2026-02-21 23:36

I bought my ModelY solely because of free autosteer. Looks like it's my last Tesla. Sad. It was a great company.

bluefalcontrainer 2026-02-21 23:45

There’s no competitive car market for evs in the us. This is from Tesla having the lion share and refusing to innovate products in lieu of mass marketing efforts. Open the gates to Chinese EVs and watch them walk back.

GokuTheMoon 2026-02-21 23:50

You should still have it if you reserved before the change.

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-21 23:52

FSD is better anyway…

akolozvary 2026-02-21 23:53

Does tesla bleed when users use autosteer or does autosteer work solely within the car and requires no datacenters? Or does it require constant updates where tesla is bleeding money when paying their employees to work on… if neither is happening, it shouldn’t be behind a paywall

Incorrect-Opinion 2026-02-21 23:58

Also, Autosteer is different than what Autopilot was, correct? It’s definitely affected my choice in buying a Tesla

fastoid 2026-02-22 00:02

I don't think so. Autosteer was solved long ago and was a solid product. I also don't think it requires many updates. The only reason I could think of is the new compensation package for its CEO, which has a metric achieving 10 million FSD subscribers.

fastoid 2026-02-22 00:04

From my understanding, the Autopilot package included the Autosteer plus Traffic aware cruise control. Both are included with used cars and not for new ones.

danSTILLtheman 2026-02-22 00:05

Yeah but if the option is free auto steer or paying $100 a month for FSD that changes things

Torczyner 2026-02-22 00:10

It's available on new S and X still. Ordering another Plaid before they end them.

RedBandsblu 2026-02-22 00:18

Free autopilot is all you need! FSD is okay, but still a work in progress. I was on a FSD trial and the mirror hit a trash bin and collapsed & broke the side window. Auto-steer is predictable while FSD is innovative and more risqué

69616D64616E21 2026-02-22 00:20

And hiring a private driver is even better. So what? People want auto steer.

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-22 00:21

Not the same but $100 a month to be driven is nothing - people waste money every month on other garbage not worth it

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-22 00:21

If you own a Tesla —100 a month is nothing to be drive all Tesla owners can afford it

Omega2307 2026-02-22 00:25

Yeah but it does not. How can i contact tesla?

ihborb 2026-02-22 00:25

Is the option available with paid or subscription fsd or is it just gone?

fastoid 2026-02-22 00:30

Hmmm, I see FSD included...

NoaLink 2026-02-22 00:33

They will take it away from the used cars next. Like they did with FSD.

fastoid 2026-02-22 00:38

Autopilot is a part of FSD

taylortaudio 2026-02-22 00:38

rage bait? some people want to save money and use a feature released with every tesla since 2017. Almost a decade of an amazing feature, removed and paywalled behind $100 - $1200 a year - 12k over the course of 10 years of ownership

goldfish4free 2026-02-22 00:41

Subaru is taking the opposite approach. The driver assistance package on its touring trim ICE outbacks is far ahead of autopilot and maybe even better than blue cruise & super cruise. no monthly fees, transfers to future owners. It’s just included with the car,

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-22 00:47

Through the app. Or just walk into the dealer

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-22 00:48

The fsd isn't transferrable to the next owner. Buncha horse shit. Evaporating money. Don't sign me up for that

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-22 00:48

Ok save money by not getting coffee or food out Nothing is like FSD I never use AP cause it’s garbage compared…

ihborb 2026-02-22 00:52

I have fsd. I was just curious if new vehicles without ap included but with an fsd subscription will still have the option of just ap instead of selecting fsd?

Torczyner 2026-02-22 00:53

Don't care. I transferred my FSD to this plaid. I'm not buying the car for the next guy, I'm buying it for me.

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-22 00:53

I'm never selling mine either I guess.

Torczyner 2026-02-22 00:57

A Plaid isn't an investment. My 911 is. The plaid is a car for getting from a to b while being fun as hell.

AlertTip 2026-02-22 00:57

Yes

Hermitmaster5000 2026-02-22 01:04

I just got a Model 3 (UK) it has autosteer and traffic aware with the basic/lowest/free package

fastoid 2026-02-22 01:12

Nooo, stop spreading bad ideas 😭

free-creddit-report 2026-02-22 01:19

Tesla advertises $4,200 in gas savings over six years, about $58/month. If $100/month were trivially affordable to all Tesla buyers, this would not matter The difference between a Standard AWD Model Y and a Premium AWD is $7,000, about the cost of FSD over a typical financing term. If $100/month were trivially affordable to all Tesla buyers, nobody would buy a Standard.

Omega2307 2026-02-22 01:24

Can you tell me whwre in the app? I do not have tha car yet btw

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-22 01:26

Is there a messages section in the app for you? Surely someone will answer you there

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-22 01:30

Standard teslas is still pricey - if they can’t afford 100 with out breaking the back, then they should be buying a used teslas with high mileage

taylortaudio 2026-02-22 01:38

No takeout ✅ No coffee unless it's made at home ✅ I have and use autopilot more than FSD ✅ Save tons of money and own a car with more features than a freshly purchased car ✅ I don't know your driving habits, but I drive 9 hours+ every other month. Autopilot feels safer because I can pull up behind a truck, set the car distance to 7 car lengths, cover the in-cabin camera and wiggle the volume knob every now and then and just listen to podcast. With FSD, I get anxious when it tries to move around a car going 1mph under the speed limit just for fun even when it's set to chill. Is FSD cool? Very, but is it perfect for every circumstance? I'd say leave that decision up to the consumer and don't force the purchaser of a 40k+ car have to subscribe for a feature, while taking a free feature away. We're both Tesla owners here, don't you want MORE features in your car? Especially ones that are free and serve a different purpose?

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-22 01:41

lol I’ve had a Tesla since 2021 - used AP twice maybe? Useless/garbage compared to FSD And I have HW3… I use it daily - 70k of my 100miles on fsd - no anxious feelings Ap feels way worse Use FSD in chill mode and it sits in the right lane… I’d be upgrading when hw5 is out and happily transfer my FSD if I can - if not MORE than happy for $100/month to be driven and I can relax in the drivers seat

fastoid 2026-02-22 01:49

Interesting! Thanks for the tip! 😁 never thought about turning on the AP only👍

vassman86 2026-02-22 02:08

*Notice to user, your 2023 Ford Mach E is being recalled to remove lane keep assist features. Please visit your local dealer for removal at your earliest convenience*

vassman86 2026-02-22 02:12

That's a dumb take. I like FSD, but saving $99/month when you could have had autopilot is not something to be ignored

namestom 2026-02-22 02:18

I hope Rivian just keeps pushing and catches up to Tesla and applies pressure. I love my teslas and FSD for now. That said, if they continue this path, I feel like a Rivian may be in my future?

Incorrect-Opinion 2026-02-22 02:36

So you just recently got a Model 3 advertised with Autosteer? Does it do what AP did?

sm00thArsenal 2026-02-22 02:43

US manufacturers might, maybe European ones, but I doubt Chinese ones do.

fyzle 2026-02-22 02:54

How does it compare to FSD?

free-creddit-report 2026-02-22 03:00

Yep I'm in the same boat. I was pretty tempted to get a new Model Y in the next 1-2 years. Now I won't even consider it.

vassman86 2026-02-22 03:16

Again, that's a bad take. I can use autopilot free and it does exactly what I need it to do. I don't need to pay $100/month on a new vehicle that my old vehicle did for free

[deleted] 2026-02-22 03:22

[removed]

vassman86 2026-02-22 03:29

Continue with your poor takes. I'd much rather keep the $100 and use autopilot the way I use it right now. When it's unsupervised it's a different story

Problem is that they will just cancel the OA and sell it next day to the next dude.

BobLazarFan 2026-02-22 06:56

Call me when you can afford a Ferrari.

bonzaimonkey 2026-02-22 07:05

From what I understand Tesla will continue having auto-steer in all trims in the EU, because of safety regulations. Making the move of removing auto-steer in the US a pure money grab move, trying to encourage more buyers to turn into subscribers. There’s nothing wrong with subscriber-based business models, but forcing you to pay a premium to get basic standard functionality is not for me. I remember BMW tried doing something similar some years back, and failed miserably.

[deleted] 2026-02-22 07:12

[deleted]

fastoid 2026-02-22 07:57

Not necessarily, AP was free and now there's no pricing option to add and compare the cost. FSD is another orange.

fastoid 2026-02-22 08:13

Good to know that Autosteer continues to be a standard feature in Europe! In the US, it was a CA court ruling that restricted the Autopilot naming as deceiving. Tesla could've just switched from Autopilot to Autosteer+Traffic aware cruise control, but decided to nix the feature all together for new cars. Of course with the subscription in mind. Does EU safety regulations mandate Autosteer or similar?

Mushoz 2026-02-22 08:27

Emergency lane keeping systems (ELKS) are mandatory, lane assist (which is what autosteer is), is not mandatory and could be removed in Europe as well. They probably will remove it as soon as FSD is approved in Europe as well. ELKS is also still present on new US Tesla's. It's the system that corrects you back into your lane when you drift over the line without blinkers. It's a reactive system that ping-pongs you between the lines, whereas autosteer is proactive keeping you in the middle of the lane.

Mushoz 2026-02-22 08:28

EU only mandates Emergency Lane Keeping Systems (ELKS), not autosteers which is lane assist.

freakdahouse 2026-02-22 10:34

You should drive your car someday then!

pixelbart 2026-02-22 11:35

Isn’t that because lane keep assist is mandatory by law? At least here in the EU it is, this is why EU Tesla’s still ship with basic Autopilot. It’s sad though, first they were the innovators, now that it’s commonplace they only deliver the bare minimum.

BlaineBMA 2026-02-22 11:50

It's a reasonable question, but I think the lack of cruise control will reduce sales of Tesla cars. The auto centering and adaptive cruise on my friend's $25K Subaru wasn't as good as the one on my MYLR, but it worked well. Another point: most manufacturers won't invest in technology as a feature, build it into the manufacturing process, and then take it out.

No_Lie_8954 2026-02-22 12:06

If you ordered at the time it was included you should get it? If not just cancel the order and just wait it out until next HW at least. Tesla may change their mind with hopefully less sales.

goldfish4free 2026-02-22 12:09

They have a new system on the 2026 outback touring trims - “Highway Hands-Free Driving Assist” it’s not the old eyesight.

Blazah 2026-02-22 12:55

look at comma.ai

righteyeofra16 2026-02-22 13:38

Alert! Alert! Tesla fan boy here! Tesla can do nothing wrong lol

Hockeyshot39 2026-02-22 13:41

Huh? I never said that - I’m saying FSD is better than AP That’s a fact

righteyeofra16 2026-02-22 14:39

You don't have to say it for it to be known or true lol

FearTheClown5 2026-02-22 15:26

It's a big loss for me. Buying a Juniper Performance was pretty much a foregone conclusion but I'm not willing to own a car that can't just stay in a lane on it's own on the highway and I'm not willing to drop $100/m to get back a basic feature. They've lost my next car to Rivian. We already had an R2 preorder for my wife and now we've got 2.

Torczyner 2026-02-22 15:29

Hi I can afford a Ferrari lol. I bought a Porsche instead though.

BobLazarFan 2026-02-22 15:31

You can only afford one or the other? Lol

ScorchedCSGO 2026-02-22 15:35

Buy slightly used? Free lane centering is amazing… It’s 40% of the reason I bought my Model 3.

BillyJohnsFinds 2026-02-22 15:35

Lol no

nist7 2026-02-22 15:51

Part of the issue is California was going to suspend Teslas dealer license on 2/14/26 if Tesla didn't comply with their requirement to stop false advertising of the autopilot terminology as California DMV thought the term was misleading consumers to think it can do more than it actually can. So Tesla essentially had to rename the function (separate it into TACC and auto steer) and then I wonder if the auto steer function had to stopped being advertised or sold as part of the car to put it behind a paywall so it satisfies part of the California DMV requirement also.....

Torczyner 2026-02-22 16:07

I currently have 4 cars and a boat. The only thing stopping me from having more is space, not money.

BobLazarFan 2026-02-22 16:08

Damn. I couldn’t imagine not having enough space for my toys. Keep grinding my guy. You’ll get there one day.

Incorrect-Opinion 2026-02-22 18:27

So is TACC different from auto steer? Or is auto steer just auto pilot but renamed? The reason I’m confused is because I’m looking at an older used Tesla on the Tesla website, and they are advertised with having Autosteer. Is that different than what autopilot is?

nist7 2026-02-22 18:32

Yeah TACC afaik is just adaptive cruise control l...it'll slow the car if in front car slows. auto steer is where it'll actually keep lane centered...so if you have TACC only you have to steer and auto steer is where the car will turn with the curve in the lanes. The older Teslas got their autopilot renamed to TACC + auto steer so if they have auto steer you're good, they all have TACC (for now! Lol)

Incorrect-Opinion 2026-02-22 18:39

Ok yeah, looking closer it says “Traffic-Aware Cruise Control with Autosteer” I just don’t seem to see those options mentioned on the new vehicles 🧐

nist7 2026-02-22 18:40

Yeah new vehicles got nerfed in 2/14, auto steer is gone and only TACC is standard now. You have to subscribe to FSD for auto steer

Incorrect-Opinion 2026-02-22 19:04

Crazy..

Litig8or53 2026-02-22 21:04

No, step forwards.

Litig8or53 2026-02-22 21:05

LOL.

Litig8or53 2026-02-22 21:05

They won’t have FSD. Have fun.

RicMedio 2026-02-22 21:30

This only applies to North America.

BrownRogue 2026-02-22 21:47

Am I the only one wondering if this move was deployed to bump-up the slumping used cars prices(caused by Hertz).

namestom 2026-02-22 21:48

They are making pretty promising progress. I hope they succeed. If they do, it’s great for all of us. Competition is great. It will give everyone options, potentially lower the price of FSD and make adoption of things like FSD more attractive. Again, I love my Teslas with FSD and mine are paid for if that tells you where I stand with it. It’s worth paying for, when that was an option.

modcaleb 2026-02-22 22:51

Except most auto manufacturers already charge for remote start nowadays. Don’t expect them to not charge for this too.

GoSh4rks 2026-02-22 23:48

Even if you have fsd, autosteer is no longer an option on the newest cars.

GoSh4rks 2026-02-22 23:50

No, there is no option for autopilot/autosteer. Your choices are either fsd or tacc.

najibs172r 2026-02-22 23:57

Depends on how good it is. I just bought a brand new Toyota sienna and the auto steer lane keep function sucks and I’d say almost dangerous. The auto steer from Tesla is massively better. I wouldn’t pay for Toyota auto steer

M1A1SteakSauce 2026-02-23 02:11

Daddy Elon gotta get that trillion dollars one way or another. Absolutely a push to get more subs for FSD

fastoid 2026-02-23 02:53

Hmmm... Hertz probably sold around 20k cars in a couple of years. Certain sentiment towards EVs and Tesla in particular from the beginning of 2025 probably did a bigger damage. Also, the number of Teslas coming off lease are somewhat consistent and larger than one time off load from Hertz... There is no estimate for AP, as it was free, so no expectations for how it would affect the used prices.

fastoid 2026-02-23 02:54

Yeah, it seems like it might go ugly for customers in general and first adopters in particular...

LowPomegranate225 2026-02-23 04:35

Only reason my family member bought Tesla was for the self lane keeping and radar cruise for traffic jams. Without those two the Tesla is simply a car badly put together and has no space in actual luxury car market. Rode in my friends VW electric SUV and the ride is easily 10 times better.

Huckleberry__Jam 2026-02-23 04:37

I know it’s stupid to have to do so for a new car, but one can buy a Comma.ai device to have same feature.

Litig8or53 2026-02-23 06:51

Like I said, they won’t have FSD, or anything like it for years, if ever. They will be lucky not to go bankrupt.

Slava_Ukraini2005 2026-02-24 03:07

Also excited for Scout!

Queasy-Bed545 2026-02-24 14:57

I have all three options but Autosteer is listed as a Beta option

GoSh4rks 2026-02-24 17:18

You probably ordered or accepted your car before the change.
