Back of seat randomly collapsed

Scumda909 | 2026-02-21 20:19 | 191 views

Anyone know what the hell happened? I came back from breakfast and saw that the back of my drivers seat was randomly like this. Sentry did not record any suspicious activity.

Someone tried to pull up the headrest? It's held on the headrest poles, which are not adjustable, and if the headrest is raised this can happen.

insearchof1230 2026-02-21 20:23

Did you happen to lift your headrest at any point recently?

koolaid3519 2026-02-21 20:23

Looks like it sheared off at the plastic clips/holders… “warranty time” (if still valid)

hoppeeness 2026-02-21 20:25

This is the answer

Da_Vader 2026-02-21 20:26

Seatback doubles as a floatation device. Very hi-tech

SwayingTreeGT 2026-02-21 20:27

Those two loops on the seat back lock in with the headrest posts. Unless the headrest was pulled off there’s no way for that to just fall off.

FeverTreeCloud 2026-02-21 20:33

random 🙄

goodvibezone 2026-02-21 20:41

You have kids?

Scumda909 2026-02-21 20:41

I didn’t adjust the headrest, but, the cover doesn’t lock into the headrest. I pushed the cover back up and it locked back in, but it’s well below the headrest area. Very confused.

Downtown-Target9050 2026-02-21 20:46

What's this part of the seat called?

OldFartWelshman 2026-02-21 20:48

Looking at the plastic clips, it doesn't look damaged, so it should lock in if it's in the correct position. Try pulling the headrest up, pressing the back firmly into the chair the correct place - you should be able to see witness marks on the fabric so you can tell where it goes, then push the headrest down again. Failing this, quick visit to a service centre!

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-21 20:51

On Tesla vehicles the headrest serves as the lock for that seat back.

According_Ninja6620 2026-02-21 20:55

Write off now.,,,

RockItM3 2026-02-21 21:03

Those big tabs on the inside of the seat back (near the top) are where the headrest rails hold it in place. Maybe the headrest was bumped but disengaging the rails from those slots is how this happens.

CopperBlitter 2026-02-21 21:06

In the unlikely event of a water landing....

hawkeye000021 2026-02-21 21:15

Had a BMW do that but it was a roadster so the seat would hit the back of the car frequently enough.

waznpride 2026-02-21 21:23

Day 1 of owning my M3. We pushed the headrest down because it was too high, and the back fell off. I put it back on and it fell off a couple more times. Eventually I pushed it REALLY hard onto the clips and it hasn't fallen off since, but of course we contacted support and they said it wasn't covered under the warranty. Like...why are there headrests that are unusable??? Only reason i can think is mandatory safety to prevent whiplash.

rsg1234 2026-02-21 21:24

This happened in my ICE because I loaded stuff into the back and the cargo was pushing against the seat. I guess some of the clips broke.

Floating_Bus 2026-02-21 21:30

It’s by design. Immediately after warranty.

Pale_Character5944 2026-02-21 21:39

You can’t adjust the headrest in a tesla?

casino_r0yale 2026-02-21 21:47

Yes it does. The headrest slides into those two holes towards the top of the plastic back

waiting4omscs 2026-02-21 21:48

So many footprints on mine. Does this mean that part is replaceable?

goodvibezone 2026-02-21 21:50

Maybe the kids 😄

akolozvary 2026-02-21 21:51

Its like my sun visor when it spilled its guts out on a hot Florida day when I left it down… if this too is common, wonder when my lucky day will come

Appropriate_Ad_2612 2026-02-21 21:55

Someone took the headrest to do some work, and when placed back didnt hit the hoops attached to the back cover.

Silent-Treat-6512 2026-02-21 22:32

Just use Elmer’s glue and put it back, that will be $756

Affl1cted 2026-02-21 22:39

So that’s why my seat rattles and squeeks, theres a hundred parts in there….

zippytiff 2026-02-21 23:09

What did you say to grok ?

flintsmith 2026-02-21 23:12

Correct. The two metal bars slide down into the seat and a spring clicks into a groove. The metal bars are long so they reach as far as the plastic seat back. The bars pass through loops molded into the plastic to hold it in place. Which is to say, you **could** use a hacksaw to add grooves that would hold the rest higher but then the back would fall off. You could weld extensions onto the bottom of the bars, but I'm not sure if there's room to fit them into the seats even with them tilted all the way back for roof clearance.

flintsmith 2026-02-21 23:19

The bottom of the back plate is held in place by a couple very thin plastic flaps. I think if those were broken or pulled back somehow, the back could move down enough to release the loops. I've only been in there once though so I could be wrong. I was very underwhelmed by the bottom catch design.

flintsmith 2026-02-21 23:20

I would look into places to put a pair of wood screws.

flekinjos 2026-02-21 23:27

you’ve taken your headrest out, did you? that’s why it’s not framed in the picture.

Top-Assist-8877 2026-02-22 00:02

Mad Max mode activated.

Most-Introduction-65 2026-02-22 00:03

Well put it back in

jjaynum1 2026-02-22 00:08

Dang that’s how much they cheaped* out for the M3s smh. I can adjust it on my MS no problem

Takaa 2026-02-22 00:20

Not since the 2021 refresh. I have a 2023 that is not adjustable, at least on the front seats.

ThrowinSm0ke 2026-02-22 00:44

Reminds me of the time I flew spirit

Striking_Ad3650 2026-02-22 01:04

The huge amount of vibrations tends to let stuff detach itself from the car... Let's say you're lucky it was only that.

CousinEddysMotorHome 2026-02-22 01:12

So close it back up.

CarbonKLR 2026-02-22 02:41

Wth

Pale_Character5944 2026-02-22 03:13

Not trying to be a Tesla hater, but that seems like a basic car function that was missed

doogmegaly 2026-02-22 04:00

Agreed!

jnads 2026-02-22 04:31

There's a huge misconception that modern car headrests are headrests -- they're not. They're anti-whiplash devices. For correct driving posture, you're not even suppose to be driving with your head resting on them. They're angled forward to prevent whiplash.

teachgirl510 2026-02-22 05:30

Yup, you’re correct! Same thing happened to me years ago when I was trying to adjust the headrest and it came completely off and the back of the seat fell down…no big deal, it holds it together. 😉

tineo_app 2026-02-22 06:33

Huh. Now that is a TIL. But then why are they adjustable?

jnads 2026-02-22 07:13

The Tesla Model 3/Y ones aren't adjustable. I assume they're not because Tesla made them tall for a "one size fits all" solution. The headrests on my Model 3 certainly are taller than other vehicles I've had. That said, the ones in my Chrysler you can adjust the angle by pulling on it and it has a ratchet, probably mostly because the seats can lay flat so you can sleep. But they're safest with the headrest in the forward leaning position. You can adjust the height too but the headrests are smaller.

Jensbert 2026-02-22 11:03

In spec I'd say

boonwin_ 2026-02-22 13:23

This is a modern door to Narnia you are the chosen one

Pale_Character5944 2026-02-22 14:04

So if you’re really tall in a Tesla you’re gonna get your neck snapped, seems ideal…

Kooch702 2026-02-22 16:44

It's a feature not a defect /s

HWbikergal 2026-02-22 16:49

Did you lift up the headrest? If so, you released the back of the seat.

Schnitzhole 2026-02-22 17:57

No, the opposite actually. Its the only ones that wont snap my neck because they are tall Enough. Most headrest tops barely reach halfway up the back of my head. Its way better this way not having to adjust the headrest and have it work for all heights

steinegal 2026-02-22 19:43

Yes it is replaceable

hahnsoloii 2026-02-23 05:03

I’m not sure but thanks for a little window into more confusion on how I can feel my kids foot barely touching the back of my seat but feels like they are using rock climbing foot holds.

junlowe 2026-02-25 16:14

You gotta fit the bottom tabs first, and then push in the headrest. If you can't get it done yourself, bring it to a sc and have them do it for you, you might be able to get it done under warranty if you talk them out
