Tesla model Y accident

I do not drive Tesla was borrowing a Tesla, I had the autopilot engaged in “standard”, the road was icy in certain sections (mountainous roads with semi-tight curves, 28-30 Fahrenheit). Basically there was one turn where there looked to be about 1-2 inches of snow and the car was moving at 25-35 mph, it looked like it was tracking wide and before the turn it just felt too fast. I thought it would start braking but “regen” didn’t kick in. Eventually it was crossing into the “cutout” on the road, I took over and started steering when that didn’t work I braked and I hit a guardrail sideways. Had enough time to say one choice word since takeover (2 seconds) Obviously, I didn’t do the right things once I took over, but if I left it would autopilot have corrected? (all seasons, dual motor Y)

no. FSD likely would have(but not certain by any means) but autopilot is basically the standard cruise control with LKAS in any normal car like a newish Honda and is not meant for anything but easy interstate type highway driving. Last time it had a meaningful update was like 2018

You said “no” but “likely would have”, just to clarify you mean it probably would’ve crashed had I just left it? Thanks man

FSD could have prevented it. Autopilot absolutely would have crashed. NO was for AP, not FSD.

The way to prevent this would be to slow down prior to the turn. If you enter a turn at too great of a speed, there’s not a lot you can do.
