Hands-free trunk opening is coming

Have it. Neat idea. But it's quicker to hit the button and open rather than wait for the process to cycle through.

Doesn’t this exist already?

On the juniper if you're standing still with your phone in the pocket behind the car the trunk will open in about 3 seconds. Super useful when you're walking up to the car most of the time I don't click the button because I'm too lazy to raise my hands.

What? My Model 3 has done this since I bought it last year. I never use it though because it takes too long to activate so I just press the button instead (even if my hands are full).

I turned this feature off on my ct frunk to many close calls with garage door.

Cause I don’t want it to open in my garage when I’m going to fetch other things

It works however; turned it off after realizing it opened with my phone in my pocket by just standing in the back of the car near my garage. Not something I wanted at the time. I think there should be some form of request instead of just standing behind it.

I just set up a Siri command to open the trunk using the shortcuts app. Works really well when I go grocery shopping and have AirPods in.

I thinknive used it once in like a year.

I have found it useful a time or two. But you’re right, it’s typically easier to just press the button. The place that I find wanting it all the time is the frunk, where there is no button and I need to dig in my pocket and get my phone out.

You can set it up so it does not work when you are at home.

One of those things that Tesla would be better off just doing it the way everyone else has done it. No need to reinvent the wheel at the expense of your customers. Same thing with rear cross radar for backing up. Or rain sensors for the wipers. This stuff is basic. And they instead make it more complicated and shittier

I turned it off… it was too inconsistent. Setup an action on my phone when I tell Siri “open trunk” it opens it. I just tell Siri when I’m walking with the cart to my car and it opens just before or as I walk up to the car.

It is already available. My 2026 model Y has it. However, I turn it off. There is multiple occasions that > stand near the trunk and it popped open. I wish they can implement a feature like BMW, you can hover your feet under the section near the trunk and it opens. That would be better and prevents accidentally open the trunk

Right it only works when I don’t need it, I’m starting to get the hang of it now there’s a sweet spot I think but overall it’s more miss than hit

I've had it open when I didn't want it to several times. Enough that I turned it off. Now I just turn it on if I know I'm going to be in a situation where my hands will be full and I won't want to put whatever I'm going to be holding down.

Yeah it just opens the boot anytime you're near it, actual pain in the ass. I turned it off. I don't always want the boot to open when I am next to it, if it could detect approach / utilize the camera, then it might be useful.

To do this well we need 3 UWB radios, outside of 2021 era VW group products none of the others have it in the name of chip shortage (*cough* cost cutting)

It works well for my wife's apple but I'm an android guy and it's terrible.

I like it but doesn’t work with my watch , just phone and if my hands are full Siri won’t work if it’s in my pocket

How do I enable it? So many times I open the trunk of my other car as I’m walking to it. Annoying I have to pull out my phone for the Tesla to do the same.

Yeah and you should see how great things go when you are scraping ice/snow off your rear windshield 🫠. Tesla really did not think through this feature.

I get it this feature is not available on non Juniper Model Y's. But what I am confused by is the phone left behind chime works on Tesla and that is Ultra Wide Band Feature. It makes me wonder why this feature couldn't be on Non Juniper models since UWB somewhat works on Tesla.

How do you enable it? Is it only available for juniper?

I have a 2026 so maybe it's not released to all, but it should just be in settings. Search trunk and it should come up.

It's in the settings on the dashboard, I would just search the word trunk. It's just something you enable in the car.

Can they implement the camera to see if my hands are full and open when it looks like my hands are carrying bags.

I hated it on mine and disabled it too.

Its on the new M3 and MY because they have the updated UWB bluetooth but this looks like the rear of a pre-refresh MY so maybe its coming to older cars now.

To add something on to what’s been said. It works but it must be using the rear camera to see if you “move away” to stop accidental activation. That’s great, except times when I actually want to use it, like carrying groceries. I shift my weight or move a bag to a different hand and it cancels/restarts the cycle.

The phone left behind only works for older Tesla if you leave it on the wireless charging pad

I miss the ultrasonic sensor under my BMW X6 rear that let you swipe your foot to open (and close) the rear hatch… It worked so flawlessly and quickly compared to the Tesla version…

I turned the function off of my X. It’s hit or miss.

I have it on my Juniper and I love it. Mine has worked every time I’ve tried it and once, when I was just moving slowly, it lit up like it was going to open but then stopped when I took one more step away.

And top of it, I have the iOS Action Button set to trigger this setting. So all I do is deep press the action button (in my pocket even) and it opens.

60% of the time it works every time kinda feature. And yes, this has been with new Teslas for quite a while now. I disabled it from mine. There is quite a lot of low parking areas where I'm from and the stupid system has tried to open the trunk when I have been connecting the charger and it has been seconds away from scratching the tail gate as it opens quite high in Y. This is not a good feature. The kick sensor is good when it works but this system is not good as it can open the trunk in areas you don't want it to fully open.

I have it on my Highland. It's both too sensitive (opens when I'm plugging the car in at a public charging station) and not sensitive enough (it takes forever to activate whenever I actually want to load something in).

Sounds like they had the auto-wipers team do the auto trunk opening.

Any idea why it won't work off of your watch? Doesn't work for me either. Complains about car key but using the watch app itself works fine for opening trunk or frunk

Auto opening the trunk when I’m using my bicycle rack on my tow hook was no fun. And the times I did need it it did not work wel. So, same here.

I have this on my model 3. Once I figured out how to disable it at home it’s much better. I would always walk by it in the garage to get something and it would start beeping. Works good now.

iPhones aren't great with UWB. Never had issues.

I have a Juniper and I have bern using this since day 1 it works great aı just need 3 seconds infront of trunk after 3th beep if I am still there it opens. Never failed never cause a problem it only works if I am at that point standing I dont know how it works but it works

Seems like it should be simple. Not fully automatic, it should require a gesture like moving your leg left to right. This was done like 15 years ago to open trunks hands free with a "kick" sensor. Camera should be and to read the gesture like a 2000s Xbox can. Really though this is a really low priority to me. If I'm home loading the car I open the trunk with the app, then pickup all the stuff I'm carrying to the car. If I'm in public I probably had a shopping cart for all that stuff.

Dies this work in driver door unlock mode? Why don't they use the rear camera to see your foot moving under it so you don't get false openings?

I added shortcuts to my iPhone and now control it with Siri. It's much better.

I really like “Siri, open Tesla trunk” 80% of the time works every time.

another thing that tesla just cant figure out. When i do have a bunch of groceries in my hand it never ever works. When I'm washing the car and forget that my phone is in my pocket it is super sensitive and starts beeping the second I approach with a hose.

It works good if you like it. Annoying when you are cleaning the front or the windshield. CT has the sensors to detect phone keys and their accurate location.

Siri shortcut is faster than standing behind the car in the rain waiting for beeps like a dummy. There should be a setting to speed up the process. Also, didn’t one of the original Juniper videos show people walking towards their Tesla and the trunk opened as they approached? This email makes it sound like that feature didn’t exist yet. Was it not included? Could this open on approach feature also be coming to the Highland?

I didn’t disable it, but I don’t use it. You have to stand there for 5 seconds for it to open. I have a shortcut instead “hey siri, open rear trunk”.

Been using it on my Juniper and works great. I haven’t had the problem others mention where it triggers when they don’t want it to, but I don’t make it a habit of lurking around the back of my car.

After cleaning my front cameras, I haven’t experienced any false positives in the past two months

Mine sort of works with my watch - it opens it to a height of its choosing. Most of the time that means it opens the trunk halfway. Does yours just flat out not work or do you have this experience too?

These emails are just reminders of existing features. It is NOT a new software update. I have this option in my myj and it works great

I have it on my juniper. I don't like it. Too slow. Also make sure you turn it off at home... (It can open while standing being it while the garage door is closed.

It's for when your hands are full or you dont want to scratch your trunk with full hands trying to hit the button. Works well for me.

Yeah my watch only works if I physically open the app and touch the commands but it Siri won’t do anything like my phone does , not sure why maybe the watch needs an update or something but mine is up to date

It needs the reverse as well. My old VW has it. Press the A button before you fill your hands up, it will close the boot as you walk away.

Unless they are doing it differently this already exists. It’s pretty finicky and takes like 5 seconds to register. I also took the paint off the spoiler twice now when it accidentally opened the trunk while my car wasn’t fully pulled all the way into the garage and hit the garage door so I’m debating disabling it. Maybe they can do something with the cameras to actually improve false positives?

Is this Y update? Works on my 3 for awhile now. Apple was first, then Android since at least mid-year 2025. Ive had excellent luck with it personally.

I got this to work once, on the loaner but I kept turning itself off for some reason.

This can open the trunk when I don't want it to open under multiple circumstances. Would be nice if it could be enabled by holding the driver door unlock button on the way to the grocery store from your car.

Yeah this already exists. I have it on in my juniper, but it only works when I’m really close. And if my phones in my back pocket, I have to turn my butt towards the car. It has been useful on occasion, but most times it’s easier to sit my stuff down and open the trunk using the button.

I've used it and I didn't like it. Is would open just by passing by. Disabled or when your washing your car by hand. Ask me how I know.

Not on Juniper only, I have it on my S. It's been around for like 9 months or longer.

The Hands Free Trunk option seems to be a response to what other manufacturers have implemented, like the hands-free power liftgate thing that uses a foot sweep when your hands are full. So if your hands are full and your phone is in your pocket/purse, I don’t see how it’s helpful to have to put your things down or pull your phone out to give Siri commands through Shortcuts and then wait a bit for it to open. If you have a free hand, just open the trunk. Using hands-free trunk, you just stand by your trunk for 3 seconds.

I think iPhones randomly go to sleep too aggressively. Or with certain connections. My hands free trunk on my juniper I have to tap the screen button to least wake it up before it works. That and the wait make it never more convenient than just tapping it myself. I’ve never understood this stuff on any car.

I really want to get a powered frunk. I can’t decide if it’s worth the risk though.

Same here. Siri voice commands don't work from watch but do work on phone. Watch app manual button presses do work though.

On my model 3 I have it on and disabled at home address. Even with these settings it has never worked out, I’ll maybe get two beeps warning it’s a it to open then it stops. Annoyingly it often opens at home when I’m plugging charge lead in. Not sure why Tesla struggles so much with this worked great on my BMW and Audi before

I swear the beep of the hands free trunk is like a jump scare for me. But today was the one time it worked when I needed it hahaha

It’s for when you have your hands full, in which case it’s literally not faster to hit the button, because you can’t.

It will beep a few times before opening and if you’re moving it doesn’t (or shouldn’t) trigger.

But on Android there are tons of phones that have UWB and aren't supported at all. I have a Pixel 8 pro which has UWB but Tesla doesn't support it.

I guess it’s a delicate balance between waiting too long and accidentally opening the trunk because you walked by it.

Nope.....it's ceramic coated and gets washed once a week using a touchless car wash with car wash mode turned on and then hand dried. Zero issues whatsoever.

You would think with all the AI ability, when it senses your phone coming into range rather than just opening, it would use the rear camera and see if you're holding something the same way my ring doorbell can figure it out, and then decide to open

I got this email as well yesterday afternoon, but can't find where to enable it in my app. I even searched "Hands-Free Trunk" in the app and it just lists the okd ways like open trunk control in the app and on the screen in the car and pressing the right scroll wheel and saying "open trunk". Nothing about auto-open. 2024 YP

This is typically meant for when your hands are full and you can’t press the button. Not for you to stand there with your hands free waiting for it to open lol

I thought it was so much cooler than my audi’s foot swipe under the car, until it constantly went off without me wanting it too lol. Now I wish it had the foot swipe like German cars do

It still takes too long which is why I said I still fumble around and still somehow press the button even when when my hands are full.  I like the way it works on my Escalade. Just walk up and kick towards the bumper and it opens the tailgate immediately.

Mine are overzealous in the rain. A light light drizzle and its full blast…….so i have to then it to manual and hit the button myself or wait for the rain to increase so that level 1 isn’t scraping a dry windshield every couple seconds.

It does it now if you stand near the boot. It’s a pain cos it’s too slow to be useful but can open the boot when you are getting the charge cable plugged in
