Hands-free trunk opening is coming

ObjectiveAcadia3721 | 2026-02-18 02:47 | 421 views

Just got this in email. It seems the software update is coming for hands-free trunk opening.

UpbeatPhilosophySJ 2026-02-18 02:50

Have it. Neat idea. But it's quicker to hit the button and open rather than wait for the process to cycle through.

DevinOlsen 2026-02-18 02:52

Doesn’t this exist already?

Ok_Cake1283 2026-02-18 02:52

On the juniper if you're standing still with your phone in the pocket behind the car the trunk will open in about 3 seconds. Super useful when you're walking up to the car most of the time I don't click the button because I'm too lazy to raise my hands.

AccomplishedWar8703 2026-02-18 02:52

I thought so too

diezel_dave 2026-02-18 02:53

What? My Model 3 has done this since I bought it last year. I never use it though because it takes too long to activate so I just press the button instead (even if my hands are full).

UpbeatPhilosophySJ 2026-02-18 02:55

Yeah I know I have that. Why wait 3 seconds.

Thirdy3rd 2026-02-18 02:56

It’s been existing. But I turned it off. Sometimes it’s annoying that whenever im close to the trunk it tries to open the trunk

Whale_Poacher 2026-02-18 02:58

I’ve never once had it work for me when I needed it, always when I’m standing close and don’t need or expect it lol

[deleted] 2026-02-18 02:58

[removed]

Itsnotadrone 2026-02-18 02:58

I turned this feature off on my ct frunk to many close calls with garage door.

ai0verlords 2026-02-18 02:58

Cause I don’t want it to open in my garage when I’m going to fetch other things

T_D_A_G_A_R_I_M 2026-02-18 03:00

It does? Is it Juniper only?

DevinOlsen 2026-02-18 03:00

I have it on my new 3

majorjxp 2026-02-18 03:01

I have this on my new 3 and disabled it. Not great.

DevinOlsen 2026-02-18 03:01

Yea it’s not that useful for me either. The idea is cool though

danimal1986 2026-02-18 03:02

Same It's annoying having it beep at you when plugging it in.

ZeroBalance98 2026-02-18 03:03

???

ZeroBalance98 2026-02-18 03:03

You can adjust it to exclude home location

bosephus6342 2026-02-18 03:03

It works however; turned it off after realizing it opened with my phone in my pocket by just standing in the back of the car near my garage. Not something I wanted at the time. I think there should be some form of request instead of just standing behind it.

TBandi 2026-02-18 03:04

I just set up a Siri command to open the trunk using the shortcuts app. Works really well when I go grocery shopping and have AirPods in.

kokobunji0550 2026-02-18 03:04

I thinknive used it once in like a year.

sevargmas 2026-02-18 03:05

I have found it useful a time or two. But you’re right, it’s typically easier to just press the button. The place that I find wanting it all the time is the frunk, where there is no button and I need to dig in my pocket and get my phone out.

Bulletproof-Salmon 2026-02-18 03:06

You can set it up so it does not work when you are at home.

bosephus6342 2026-02-18 03:07

will check it out, didn't see a location setting when I looked but I'll take your word for it.

TheNoLifeKing 2026-02-18 03:07

This exists and I use it all the time, lol.

ScorchedCSGO 2026-02-18 03:08

Give us back lane centering with new purchases.

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-02-18 03:09

One of those things that Tesla would be better off just doing it the way everyone else has done it. No need to reinvent the wheel at the expense of your customers. Same thing with rear cross radar for backing up. Or rain sensors for the wipers. This stuff is basic. And they instead make it more complicated and shittier

heretorobwallst 2026-02-18 03:10

2012 Ford ideas on your 2026 tesla

throwaway4231throw 2026-02-18 03:11

What if you don’t want it to open every time?

cwhiterun 2026-02-18 03:11

That feature came out 2 years ago.

psilokan 2026-02-18 03:12

Yeah I see that being an issue. Also cant' tell you how many times the trunk on my wife's hyundai has opened up while I'm trying to wash the car lol

Zachjsrf 2026-02-18 03:12

I have it on my S and its annoying tbh

CarbonKLR 2026-02-18 03:13

Does this work on the first gens

gweilojoe 2026-02-18 03:13

I turned it off… it was too inconsistent. Setup an action on my phone when I tell Siri “open trunk” it opens it. I just tell Siri when I’m walking with the cart to my car and it opens just before or as I walk up to the car.

juntrinh 2026-02-18 03:13

It is already available. My 2026 model Y has it. However, I turn it off. There is multiple occasions that > stand near the trunk and it popped open. I wish they can implement a feature like BMW, you can hover your feet under the section near the trunk and it opens. That would be better and prevents accidentally open the trunk

Fearless-Cattle-9698 2026-02-18 03:13

The Porsche frunk is slick. They swipe it and it opens

idkausernamerntbh 2026-02-18 03:14

Right it only works when I don’t need it, I’m starting to get the hang of it now there’s a sweet spot I think but overall it’s more miss than hit

No-Pilot5559 2026-02-18 03:14

Cool in theory but dumb feature in reality

Signal_Map7 2026-02-18 03:14

I have it on my 3 and turned it off after a while, too sensitive and trigger happy

CrappyTan69 2026-02-18 03:15

This works through phone proximity and crotch recognition...

Tsurfer4 2026-02-18 03:16

I use it when I have a grocery bag in each hand.

xion1992 2026-02-18 03:17

I've had it open when I didn't want it to several times. Enough that I turned it off. Now I just turn it on if I know I'm going to be in a situation where my hands will be full and I won't want to put whatever I'm going to be holding down.

darkbladetrey 2026-02-18 03:18

I was just thinking that lol. I walk behind the teslas to go grab stuff when I’m garage. It goes up then that door is getting damaged

daewootech 2026-02-18 03:18

Juniper only I believe

Disastrous-Act-8135 2026-02-18 03:20

Yeah agree it’s annoying af. Doesn’t work when you want it to but starts beeping and opening when you walk by slowly

jasonni1234 2026-02-18 03:20

Juniper models and up only

srp6 2026-02-18 03:20

Cybertruck has this for the frunk

jasonni1234 2026-02-18 03:20

No

WaffleHouseCEO 2026-02-18 03:21

I think by default it doesn’t do it at home

autotom 2026-02-18 03:21

Yeah it just opens the boot anytime you're near it, actual pain in the ass. I turned it off. I don't always want the boot to open when I am next to it, if it could detect approach / utilize the camera, then it might be useful.

PositiveMind7860 2026-02-18 03:22

Already does this. ‘26 MYP

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-18 03:26

My S let me disable it at home. Everywhere else is a gas

Conscious_Zebra_1808 2026-02-18 03:26

Yeah but it sucks

KamKorn 2026-02-18 03:26

I have that on my x already. It beeps and then it opens .. I think the frunk too

MisterBumpingston 2026-02-18 03:27

Tesla are allergic to patents and licensing.

Empty_Buffalo_2820 2026-02-18 03:30

it's already a thing. that email doesn't say it's "coming" does it? Didn't think so.

ramanana01 2026-02-18 03:31

Then don’t stand behind your trunk or move away when it starts beeping. You can also disable it , I have it disabled at home

SerennialFellow 2026-02-18 03:32

To do this well we need 3 UWB radios, outside of 2021 era VW group products none of the others have it in the name of chip shortage (*cough* cost cutting)

lucasisacao 2026-02-18 03:34

Can’t wait to be charged a monthly fee to use this ground breaking feature

Rick-0-Shay 2026-02-18 03:36

It works well for my wife's apple but I'm an android guy and it's terrible.

Adorable-Boat8632 2026-02-18 03:36

I like it but doesn’t work with my watch , just phone and if my hands are full Siri won’t work if it’s in my pocket

Neo692 2026-02-18 03:36

That’s brilliant I will do this too

albelthewiked666 2026-02-18 03:39

I have this on my MY Juniper and I have it disabled. It’s too sensitive:/

sychox51 2026-02-18 03:45

How do I enable it? So many times I open the trunk of my other car as I’m walking to it. Annoying I have to pull out my phone for the Tesla to do the same.

iluvmacs408 2026-02-18 03:47

Yeah and you should see how great things go when you are scraping ice/snow off your rear windshield 🫠. Tesla really did not think through this feature.

Misophonic4000 2026-02-18 03:49

They're just pimping a feature that already exists... And has for quite a while, too.

Impressive-Ask4169 2026-02-18 03:51

Truth! It literally only starts beeping when I don’t need it to and never when I do

KiloAlphaJulietIndia 2026-02-18 03:52

How much will it be? Subscription based?

panda2297 2026-02-18 03:59

I get it this feature is not available on non Juniper Model Y's. But what I am confused by is the phone left behind chime works on Tesla and that is Ultra Wide Band Feature. It makes me wonder why this feature couldn't be on Non Juniper models since UWB somewhat works on Tesla.

knapsackMax 2026-02-18 04:00

How do you enable it? Is it only available for juniper?

Rick-0-Shay 2026-02-18 04:01

I have a 2026 so maybe it's not released to all, but it should just be in settings. Search trunk and it should come up.

TheNoLifeKing 2026-02-18 04:01

It's in the settings on the dashboard, I would just search the word trunk. It's just something you enable in the car.

htdwps 2026-02-18 04:05

Can they implement the camera to see if my hands are full and open when it looks like my hands are carrying bags.

quakeroatmeal7 2026-02-18 04:07

I hated it on mine and disabled it too.

Lokon19 2026-02-18 04:09

Its on the new M3 and MY because they have the updated UWB bluetooth but this looks like the rear of a pre-refresh MY so maybe its coming to older cars now.

jtoper 2026-02-18 04:11

To add something on to what’s been said. It works but it must be using the rear camera to see if you “move away” to stop accidental activation. That’s great, except times when I actually want to use it, like carrying groceries. I shift my weight or move a bag to a different hand and it cancels/restarts the cycle.

[deleted] 2026-02-18 04:12

[deleted]

Wrong-Inveestment-67 2026-02-18 04:13

Can I just enable this for one time? So when I am shopping I can turn it on?

qiuboujun 2026-02-18 04:13

The phone left behind only works for older Tesla if you leave it on the wireless charging pad

xbinary 2026-02-18 04:25

Damn I got excited and I’m reading the comments like… wait you guys already have it??

Tall_Towel_3420 2026-02-18 04:27

I turned it off on my juniper. Rather annoying tbh, trunk would open itself as I was loading up my bike rack

crisss1205 2026-02-18 04:29

It’s clearly a juniper. Looks like the standard one.

Chiplemunk 2026-02-18 04:29

The car in the image is a Juniper Model Y

xrfr8 2026-02-18 04:29

I miss the ultrasonic sensor under my BMW X6 rear that let you swipe your foot to open (and close) the rear hatch… It worked so flawlessly and quickly compared to the Tesla version…

Reality-Leather 2026-02-18 04:35

I already have a hands free trunk opener. He's called Ron, my driver.

SirWilson919 2026-02-18 04:36

You can exclude home location

GO__NAVY 2026-02-18 04:37

I turned the function off of my X. It’s hit or miss.

Possible-Landscape72 2026-02-18 04:37

I have it on my Juniper and I love it. Mine has worked every time I’ve tried it and once, when I was just moving slowly, it lit up like it was going to open but then stopped when I took one more step away.

SUPER-NIINTENDO 2026-02-18 04:41

Totally forgot this was a thing and I got trapped in-between my garage and trunk trying to install a spoiler

cac2573 2026-02-18 04:42

Use the thing between your ears

daniellellen 2026-02-18 04:49

I have a new juniper and I’ve had this since I got the car in December?

JustinW99 2026-02-18 04:49

It’s already here.

JustinW99 2026-02-18 04:50

I use it all the time.

Heavy_Team7922 2026-02-18 04:53

this has been around for well over a year

Visible_Lack_748 2026-02-18 05:04

The feature that already exists on the cars free of charge?

sychox51 2026-02-18 05:14

Thanks!

or9ob 2026-02-18 05:14

And top of it, I have the iOS Action Button set to trigger this setting. So all I do is deep press the action button (in my pocket even) and it opens.

HipHopGrandpa 2026-02-18 05:17

Works fine on Juniper.

Itsnotadrone 2026-02-18 05:23

Oh that’s cool will look into it thanks

Sad-Balance6811 2026-02-18 05:23

This has been solved with kick to open for years on other cars

FishrNC 2026-02-18 05:27

My M3 bought March 2024 has it.

atticus04 2026-02-18 05:27

On my 2021 MX too

GucciTokes 2026-02-18 05:29

asterisk? is this going to cost monthly? if so, we’re so cooked at that rate..

TechRyze 2026-02-18 05:32

I need to turn this off, as it wants to open when I’m round the back trying to get 3rd party charging working - it’s a faff.

T_Hankss 2026-02-18 05:32

60% of the time it works every time kinda feature. And yes, this has been with new Teslas for quite a while now. I disabled it from mine. There is quite a lot of low parking areas where I'm from and the stupid system has tried to open the trunk when I have been connecting the charger and it has been seconds away from scratching the tail gate as it opens quite high in Y. This is not a good feature. The kick sensor is good when it works but this system is not good as it can open the trunk in areas you don't want it to fully open.

Luerch 2026-02-18 05:47

Inderdaad niet geweldig. Gaat piepen als je langs loopt maar als je wilt dat de klep opent doet het niets.

CousinEddysMotorHome 2026-02-18 05:51

I use this all the time on my 3. It's already available.

TheGothian 2026-02-18 05:55

Is it coming to older models? Because this already exist on juniper and highland

iJeff 2026-02-18 06:08

I have it on my Highland. It's both too sensitive (opens when I'm plugging the car in at a public charging station) and not sensitive enough (it takes forever to activate whenever I actually want to load something in).

bigfoot_done_hiding 2026-02-18 06:10

Sounds like they had the auto-wipers team do the auto trunk opening.

mrandr01d 2026-02-18 06:22

Truly designed in California (By some dudes in their 20s no less, probably. Or who wish they were still in their 20s.)

BaySportsFan 2026-02-18 06:36

Any idea why it won't work off of your watch? Doesn't work for me either. Complains about car key but using the watch app itself works fine for opening trunk or frunk

Partayof4 2026-02-18 06:50

Umm had this for a month or so now - is this a joke?

K3jai 2026-02-18 06:58

Tha feature already exists on the Juniper and I use it all the time

Faile-Bashere 2026-02-18 06:59

It’s always too slow for me.

RowdyNL 2026-02-18 07:09

Auto opening the trunk when I’m using my bicycle rack on my tow hook was no fun. And the times I did need it it did not work wel. So, same here.

ChampionshipAgile263 2026-02-18 07:20

The wiper system is a complete joke

Happy-Childhood5990 2026-02-18 07:30

Isn't a UWB enabled phone necessary for this feature to work?

curiousbydesign 2026-02-18 07:38

Thank you.

Supersaiyan_08 2026-02-18 07:41

I have this on my model 3. Once I figured out how to disable it at home it’s much better. I would always walk by it in the garage to get something and it would start beeping. Works good now.

jwegener 2026-02-18 07:41

Yep it’s overactive

eatmorbacon 2026-02-18 07:46

Looks like Tesla is emailing threats now.  Only thing worse is the wipers. That should tell you everything .

eatmorbacon 2026-02-18 07:46

Looks like Tesla is emailing threats now.  Only thing worse is the wipers. That should tell you everything .

-eccentric- 2026-02-18 07:47

iPhones aren't great with UWB. Never had issues.

freudsuncle 2026-02-18 07:48

I have a Juniper and I have bern using this since day 1 it works great aı just need 3 seconds infront of trunk after 3th beep if I am still there it opens. Never failed never cause a problem it only works if I am at that point standing I dont know how it works but it works

TeslaLounge-ModTeam 2026-02-18 07:56

This post violates the rules of the TeslaLounge community.

grogi81 2026-02-18 08:00

Only Highland/Juniper.

Vidi_89 2026-02-18 08:11

Wow what a Innovation. 😂

ShortTheseNuts 2026-02-18 08:18

Even calling it a system is giving it too much credit.

UrsoXone 2026-02-18 08:23

Interesting , on Juniper it been working well, I am a new user.. may be I need to wait a bit longer :)

TissueAndLube 2026-02-18 08:27

Tell us about that sweet spot cuz I can’t find it

DericAA 2026-02-18 08:44

Op did you hear that soon they say the Tesla will be able to drive itself? Pretty rad eh

Present-Ad-9598 2026-02-18 08:47

This already exists and has for a few years atleast

RiverFit7452 2026-02-18 08:57

I’ve never managed to get this to work. On any car!

Mikey_likes_it- 2026-02-18 09:45

Seems like it should be simple. Not fully automatic, it should require a gesture like moving your leg left to right. This was done like 15 years ago to open trunks hands free with a "kick" sensor. Camera should be and to read the gesture like a 2000s Xbox can. Really though this is a really low priority to me. If I'm home loading the car I open the trunk with the app, then pickup all the stuff I'm carrying to the car. If I'm in public I probably had a shopping cart for all that stuff.

Geeky_1 2026-02-18 09:57

Dies this work in driver door unlock mode? Why don't they use the rear camera to see your foot moving under it so you don't get false openings?

WhaleDonation7 2026-02-18 09:59

Works great on mine

Jman841 2026-02-18 10:03

Used it a few times, worked perfect for me. Also never had it open on accident.

Head_Ship4359 2026-02-18 10:15

I added shortcuts to my iPhone and now control it with Siri. It's much better.

WellKnownAnono 2026-02-18 10:28

I really like “Siri, open Tesla trunk” 80% of the time works every time.

opulousss 2026-02-18 10:31

How does it know when you want to open the trunk and when not?

Blazah 2026-02-18 10:42

another thing that tesla just cant figure out. When i do have a bunch of groceries in my hand it never ever works. When I'm washing the car and forget that my phone is in my pocket it is super sensitive and starts beeping the second I approach with a hose.

ObeseSnake 2026-02-18 10:44

It works good if you like it. Annoying when you are cleaning the front or the windshield. CT has the sensors to detect phone keys and their accurate location.

ZealousidealExam640 2026-02-18 10:54

Siri shortcut is faster than standing behind the car in the rain waiting for beeps like a dummy. There should be a setting to speed up the process. Also, didn’t one of the original Juniper videos show people walking towards their Tesla and the trunk opened as they approached? This email makes it sound like that feature didn’t exist yet. Was it not included? Could this open on approach feature also be coming to the Highland?

Shereefz 2026-02-18 11:01

Here is the leaked code from Tesla servers: ``` if (user.distance < 3 && doesn’t need trunk) OpenTrunk(); else PointAndLaughAtUser(); ```

srp6 2026-02-18 11:08

Actually I turned it of for that exact reason lol

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-02-18 11:12

I didn’t disable it, but I don’t use it. You have to stand there for 5 seconds for it to open. I have a shortcut instead “hey siri, open rear trunk”.

ajn63 2026-02-18 11:37

Been using it on my Juniper and works great. I haven’t had the problem others mention where it triggers when they don’t want it to, but I don’t make it a habit of lurking around the back of my car.

RealAccountant9805 2026-02-18 11:38

After cleaning my front cameras, I haven’t experienced any false positives in the past two months

Dash------ 2026-02-18 11:50

Tesla: sorry didn’t hear you well…did you say you wish us to remove the physical switch and use the camera in the back to open trunk automatically for you? You got it!

onhermajestysecret 2026-02-18 11:55

This is standard in my awd alrdy

elonsusk69420 2026-02-18 12:00

Yeah. I'v had this for a while now. Turned it off in my garage but I do use it elsewhere.

night_life_envy 2026-02-18 12:18

Mine sort of works with my watch - it opens it to a height of its choosing. Most of the time that means it opens the trunk halfway. Does yours just flat out not work or do you have this experience too?

These-Delay6072 2026-02-18 12:19

These emails are just reminders of existing features. It is NOT a new software update. I have this option in my myj and it works great

royale_witcheese 2026-02-18 12:24

That’s what he said.

Redrix_ 2026-02-18 12:25

The fucking door doesn't even unlock when I walk up

vulcan_on_earth 2026-02-18 12:28

Even easier to use Siri Shortcuts and say “Open Trunk” (or whatever)

Snommis7 2026-02-18 12:39

Can you elaborate? Clean from outside or did you remove housing and clean the camera directly?

ureviews 2026-02-18 12:41

I have it on my juniper. I don't like it. Too slow. Also make sure you turn it off at home... (It can open while standing being it while the garage door is closed.

daynad00 2026-02-18 12:48

It sucks

brayjr 2026-02-18 13:08

It's for when your hands are full or you dont want to scratch your trunk with full hands trying to hit the button. Works well for me.

Adorable-Boat8632 2026-02-18 13:13

Yeah my watch only works if I physically open the app and touch the commands but it Siri won’t do anything like my phone does , not sure why maybe the watch needs an update or something but mine is up to date

Adorable-Boat8632 2026-02-18 13:14

Flag out doesn’t work with Siri just physically if I touch the commands on the Apple Watch

Alone_Vegetable_2657 2026-02-18 13:16

I have it and it works fine for me 😆

Gh0stw0lf 2026-02-18 13:20

This already exists and it’s not reliable.

AMLRoss 2026-02-18 13:28

I just use the app, but yeah it would be nice if it opened up for us.

Lokki_7 2026-02-18 13:29

It needs the reverse as well. My old VW has it. Press the A button before you fill your hands up, it will close the boot as you walk away.

Schnitzhole 2026-02-18 13:38

Unless they are doing it differently this already exists. It’s pretty finicky and takes like 5 seconds to register. I also took the paint off the spoiler twice now when it accidentally opened the trunk while my car wasn’t fully pulled all the way into the garage and hit the garage door so I’m debating disabling it. Maybe they can do something with the cameras to actually improve false positives?

ike0069 2026-02-18 13:47

Is this Y update? Works on my 3 for awhile now. Apple was first, then Android since at least mid-year 2025. Ive had excellent luck with it personally.

Peace-wolf 2026-02-18 13:56

I have it. The trunk opens automatically when I’m cleaning snow from the rear window.

StepYurGameUp 2026-02-18 14:02

Works just fine on my 22MS

PrestigiousDrag7674 2026-02-18 14:15

It’s an option folks, don’t like it? Turn it off…

ckybam69 2026-02-18 14:25

not sure why I would need this ever

SP3NGL3R 2026-02-18 14:28

Gonna be a lot of dings from this opening into a garage door or a ceiling. If they enable this on my car it's getting turned of the second I learn about it. Nope, no thanks. Fix the wipers instead.

iluvmacs408 2026-02-18 14:36

Yes, truly I have blamed most of my Tesla's shortcomings on "California thinking". Still love the car though.

Critical_Ad_7072 2026-02-18 14:46

Never works

pinegap96 2026-02-18 14:49

What do you mean coming?? This feature has been around for almost a year lol. Only on UWB cars though so 2024+ Model 3 and 2026+ Model Y

pinegap96 2026-02-18 14:50

No. This relies on ultra wide band technology and only the refresh teslas have that

Master-Journalist888 2026-02-18 14:55

“Automatically open as you approach” - including when you don’t need it so it hits garage door

Correct-Willingness2 2026-02-18 15:10

I hate this. We’ll be standing behind with a stroller or something and it opens automatically

Onyxam 2026-02-18 15:10

I got this to work once, on the loaner but I kept turning itself off for some reason.

Corogue 2026-02-18 15:14

This can open the trunk when I don't want it to open under multiple circumstances. Would be nice if it could be enabled by holding the driver door unlock button on the way to the grocery store from your car.

Corogue 2026-02-18 15:15

If you have the S3XY Commander, you can enable a similar feature

Direct-Competition34 2026-02-18 15:17

Yeah this already exists. I have it on in my juniper, but it only works when I’m really close. And if my phones in my back pocket, I have to turn my butt towards the car. It has been useful on occasion, but most times it’s easier to sit my stuff down and open the trunk using the button.

kumarbi_knasher 2026-02-18 15:20

I've used it and I didn't like it. Is would open just by passing by. Disabled or when your washing your car by hand. Ask me how I know.

Videoplushair 2026-02-18 15:31

Does this work with the older model Y’s?

soggy_mattress 2026-02-18 15:34

This is the state of Tesla discussion on Reddit. This place feels more out of touch than a nursing home sometimes.

soggy_mattress 2026-02-18 15:35

Not on Juniper only, I have it on my S. It's been around for like 9 months or longer.

sevargmas 2026-02-18 15:38

The Hands Free Trunk option seems to be a response to what other manufacturers have implemented, like the hands-free power liftgate thing that uses a foot sweep when your hands are full. So if your hands are full and your phone is in your pocket/purse, I don’t see how it’s helpful to have to put your things down or pull your phone out to give Siri commands through Shortcuts and then wait a bit for it to open. If you have a free hand, just open the trunk. Using hands-free trunk, you just stand by your trunk for 3 seconds.

Durtyjoey 2026-02-18 15:46

This is already a thing. Could work more better but it comes in handy sometimes

Aiku1337 2026-02-18 16:05

I love how Tesla “solves” problems that have been already been solved by implementing worse solutions.

Daddy___UwU 2026-02-18 16:19

I have this, and it's not good. When I need it to work, it doesn't, and when I don't want it to open, it opens lol.

rwhe83 2026-02-18 16:19

My M3 already has it. Quite annoying to stand there with stuff in your hands to watch it repeatedly beep and slowly open.

Past-Cattle2302 2026-02-18 16:24

Who vibe-coded the thing.

quetiapinenapper 2026-02-18 16:34

I think iPhones randomly go to sleep too aggressively. Or with certain connections. My hands free trunk on my juniper I have to tap the screen button to least wake it up before it works. That and the wait make it never more convenient than just tapping it myself. I’ve never understood this stuff on any car.

quetiapinenapper 2026-02-18 16:35

I really want to get a powered frunk. I can’t decide if it’s worth the risk though.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-18 16:41

I wonder about all the wiper comments you see on a blog like this. I've never had a single issue with the wipers on our 2026 MYJ AWD LR. What am I doing wrong?

BaySportsFan 2026-02-18 16:49

Same here. Siri voice commands don't work from watch but do work on phone. Watch app manual button presses do work though.

ParaIIax_ 2026-02-18 17:46

this is already a thing

Gigtooo 2026-02-18 17:48

This already is a thing…

djmere 2026-02-18 18:08

I've turned it off & my trunk / frunk still open when I stand near the sensor too long

djmere 2026-02-18 18:09

I can't get away fast enough. They still pop open. And I have the feature disabled. It's annoying

TraditionalBus5991 2026-02-18 18:11

On my model 3 I have it on and disabled at home address. Even with these settings it has never worked out, I’ll maybe get two beeps warning it’s a it to open then it stops. Annoyingly it often opens at home when I’m plugging charge lead in. Not sure why Tesla struggles so much with this worked great on my BMW and Audi before

M4DHouse 2026-02-18 18:20

I swear the beep of the hands free trunk is like a jump scare for me. But today was the one time it worked when I needed it hahaha

M4DHouse 2026-02-18 18:23

It’s for when you have your hands full, in which case it’s literally not faster to hit the button, because you can’t.

M4DHouse 2026-02-18 18:24

It will beep a few times before opening and if you’re moving it doesn’t (or shouldn’t) trigger.

jvisser85 2026-02-18 19:02

But on Android there are tons of phones that have UWB and aren't supported at all. I have a Pixel 8 pro which has UWB but Tesla doesn't support it.

_casshern_ 2026-02-18 19:13

I guess it’s a delicate balance between waiting too long and accidentally opening the trunk because you walked by it.

Meanee 2026-02-18 19:36

I've been thinking about commander. What's the feature that mimics it?

dibzim 2026-02-18 19:40

Never works for me on a 26 M3

Exact_Kaleidoscope51 2026-02-18 20:11

This has been a thing on my 25 M3. It works, but it’s not the greatest.

ElunesBlessing 2026-02-18 20:39

not if your hands are full

RealAccountant9805 2026-02-18 20:50

I cleaned the windshield after removing the housing

UglySock 2026-02-18 21:04

It's disabled in car wash mode though

neo241091 2026-02-18 21:16

Same

miljoz 2026-02-18 22:06

Whut I already have this since I own my tesla?

D4rkArrow 2026-02-18 22:22

"hey Siri - open Tesla boot" Pretty hands free for me already.

sags95 2026-02-18 22:23

I'm guessing you dont have any ice or snow. It's fine with rain but absolutely useless during winter.

RuthlessIndecision 2026-02-18 22:39

Finally I was asking for this for my frunk at the grocery store for a few years now

Alert-Discount-2558 2026-02-18 22:48

I couldn’t get that to work in shortcuts only with Tessie app.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-18 22:50

I live in Montana.......

RetiredPostino21 2026-02-18 23:33

Don’t get me started on the Psycho Auto wiper blades!!!

FunkyTangg 2026-02-19 00:28

What, no Fob support?

Retire2the_Mountains 2026-02-19 00:29

LOLzzz this

[deleted] 2026-02-19 00:47

I have this already

Informal-Shower8501 2026-02-19 01:18

Yea also a little confused. I’ve almost been skull clapped by auto open at least a half dozen times..

Delicious-Captain858 2026-02-19 01:35

Yea it uses the camera it isn’t very good

papertowel00 2026-02-19 01:41

Will this work on the cybertruck?

PuzzleheadedControl 2026-02-19 01:52

Yours doesn't just randomly start spewing fluid and wiping uncontrollably 30 minutes after washing and waxing your car?

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-19 02:00

Nope.....it's ceramic coated and gets washed once a week using a touchless car wash with car wash mode turned on and then hand dried. Zero issues whatsoever.

OkCockroach7825 2026-02-19 02:02

I didn’t like it. I disabled it.

distressedleader 2026-02-19 02:20

Why can't they use the camera? since they are so camera-everything now.

izucantc 2026-02-19 02:29

Model 3 getting this as well?

anangrytaco 2026-02-19 02:40

I have it in my 26 MY. I have the disable it at home toggled though. Works well whenever I'm out

mchinsky 2026-02-19 04:23

You would think with all the AI ability, when it senses your phone coming into range rather than just opening, it would use the rear camera and see if you're holding something the same way my ring doorbell can figure it out, and then decide to open

Geeky_1 2026-02-19 07:06

I got this email as well yesterday afternoon, but can't find where to enable it in my app. I even searched "Hands-Free Trunk" in the app and it just lists the okd ways like open trunk control in the app and on the screen in the car and pressing the right scroll wheel and saying "open trunk". Nothing about auto-open. 2024 YP

StrongGas2199 2026-02-19 08:07

This is typically meant for when your hands are full and you can’t press the button. Not for you to stand there with your hands free waiting for it to open lol

StrongGas2199 2026-02-19 08:08

I thought it was so much cooler than my audi’s foot swipe under the car, until it constantly went off without me wanting it too lol. Now I wish it had the foot swipe like German cars do

diezel_dave 2026-02-19 10:57

It still takes too long which is why I said I still fumble around and still somehow press the button even when when my hands are full.  I like the way it works on my Escalade. Just walk up and kick towards the bumper and it opens the tailgate immediately.

Texmex865 2026-02-19 12:29

Mine are overzealous in the rain. A light light drizzle and its full blast…….so i have to then it to manual and hit the button myself or wait for the rain to increase so that level 1 isn’t scraping a dry windshield every couple seconds.

Logical_Classic_4451 2026-02-19 12:59

It does it now if you stand near the boot. It’s a pain cos it’s too slow to be useful but can open the boot when you are getting the charge cable plugged in

bill_257 2026-02-19 18:45

That’s why I have it turned off at home. Since it asked me update my phone key it works better when I want it to at least

IntelligentAdagio784 2026-02-20 00:23

This already exist on my juniper Y and it’s annoying af! Literally walking behind it and it starts beeping to open, talk about cleaning and it starts beeping. I’ve turned it off

dragonovus 2026-02-20 00:49

It already exists? Just stand behind the car and it opens after 3 beeps. Dunno why you get this now?

NivekTheGreat1 2026-02-20 07:06

Would like 50% of the time in the Model X. It’s really slow to recognize things.

Short_the_shorts 2026-02-20 10:50

I desperately need that in the legacy model Y 🙂

goodvibezone 2026-02-21 20:34

Don't get excited. The only time it works on my X is when I added the registration tag onto the rear plate...

kobylaz 2026-02-24 19:34

If it’s anything like my auto doors on the model X you’ll soon disable it. The amount of times the doors popped open when I’m taking the bins out…
