Model Y / 3 in snowy countries

BrilliantWerewolf749 | 2026-02-16 22:51 | 10 views

Hi all, I have a 2024 model y performance and it really is a great car. I live in Denmark though, and the climate here with occasional snow and salt and high humidity wreaks havoc on cars when it comes to rust. Plan to keep the car for a long time but I have heard tales that teslas especially 3 / Y are very susceptible to rusting in these conditions and I worry if it may even last 8-10 years in such conditions? Things are quite different here compared to California etc :-) Thanks for the advice!

I live in Canada. You have two options if you’re that concerned and want to ensure longevity for 10+ years. 1. Full car PPF 2. Regular (weekly) car washes Ideally both. I’ve PPFed both my teslas I’ve owned.

I’m not sure what others experiences have been, but my Model Y has been terrible in snow and ice, especially with any degree of slope.  I think the weight of the vehicle just makes it more prone to sliding but I’m not sure.

For rust? I had not thought of that C I was more thinking of the undercarriage rusting away? Can you maybe elaborate a bit? Thanks!

I feel like the car is doing okay, I don’t do any dirt or off roads. I’m mostly worried about the car being rotted with rust in 5-8 years 😅

I live in a snowy climate. Had a Model 3 for 8 years. Wash it once a year in the spring. No issues. It’s absolutely covered in salt right now.

Totally hear you.  Sorry, I should have specified that I’d encourage it as an additional thing to consider, not an answer to your question, my apologies.

The under carriage isn’t metal.

BrilliantWerewolf749 2026-02-16 23:09

No worries! Fortunately that hasn’t been an issue thus far, and we don’t really get that much snow

BrilliantWerewolf749 2026-02-16 23:10

Huh? I don’t know too much about this but that seems pretty unlikely 😂

BrilliantWerewolf749 2026-02-16 23:11

Okay so that makes me feel a bit better, I probably won’t be keeping longer than 8-10 years so hopefully it will last at least that long (rust wise at least, not counting the rest)

the underbody is extensively covered flat for aerodynamics, so i dont think it will be too prone to rusting. the suspension at each wheel needs to get a good rinse. for me, i bought angled lances for my pressure wasser to reach them better.

Is it AWD with good tires?

yhsong1116 2026-02-17 00:37

do you have dedicated winter tires? or do you insist M+S is enough for snow?

Aviviani_ 2026-02-17 01:08

It is, AWD with Cross Climate 2s

Aviviani_ 2026-02-17 01:09

Cross Clinate 2s.  My commute takes me to an environment non-conducive with winter tires (always 55f or higher) unfortunately, otherwise I would.

Interesting. Thanks.

Aviviani_ 2026-02-17 01:54

Totally!  Do take it with a grain of salt though, I literally live on a hill so your experience may be different.

globesdustbin 2026-02-17 01:56

I’m about to find out for myself, but often weight is an advantage. Have you ever tried a pickup in the winter with no weight in the bed?

Aviviani_ 2026-02-17 01:56

Yeah, a F150 and it blew through my conditions here with no problem.

Model Y in DK as well here, I am amazed by the snow performance. It's rock solid.

My wive’s uncle lives in Ontario and has still a OG 2018 model 3. Approaching 200,000 km. Still on original brakes, never properly washed his car. He has two small paint chips at the same spot on top of his front wheel wells.

there is a youtube video of a swedish mechanic saying "older" model 3s with no rust protection seems just fine.
