I think the Y will last 10+ years. It’s just a battery longevity issue, you’ll get maybe 75-80% of the battery life.
Gas car run in the problem as well, gas efficient drops a lot after 10 years.
BMW have more maintenance issue IMO.

Especially if you want to keep a car 10+ years, I'd say use the 0% APR and dump the rest of that money in the market and your wallet will be a lot happier.
That said, I just purchased my Model Y juniper because I know I'll be happy with the upgrades and the car AS IT IS TODAY. The better interior noise, ventilated seats, FSD v14, etc, I am happy with and will keep the car at minimum 5-10 years. I also don't see any reason why it wouldn't last as long as my Scion xB (which I had 20 years and was still running perfectly when I sold it).

Musk had said that Tesla battery packs are designed to commercial standards and should last at least 200k miles. The fact that the MX/MS have longer warranties than M3/MY tells me that the MX/MS should last longer but it could be that is just based on a lower volume and higher price. I plan to keep my X for at least 10 years.

Same car, while I expect to keep getting software updates for at least two more years, I'm happy with it as is. Small updates like the recent low power mode etc. can be pushed out to much older cars. I think we have been spoiled now and people will expect software updates indefinitely which I think is unreasonable. If my car happily drives me from point a to b as it does now for the next ten years with minimal maintenance/repairs, I'll be happy.

The best way to go is find a slightly used one and plan on driving it til the wheels fall off.. buying new is quite frankly not a good option, as it will depreciate half the value in the first 1-2 years. Finding one with 20-30k miles will get you a deal and you’ll be able to keep the value of the car if you decide to sell it

My 2018 LR RWD M3 has 120k miles and runs just fine. Major issues are currently the cooling actuator is stripped, so supercharging is limited to 120kW ($3k fix) and a transformer has gone bad which limits AC charging to 32A which equates to 32 miles of charge instead of 44 per hour ($5k fix).
Drivetrain has been rock solid and battery degradation as been fine (310 > 260 max range or 17% loss). I'm about to get a MYP so I can transfer the FSD next month, and my daughter is going to inherit the 3.

Im a believer in buying the last model year of any iteration. I believe that anything that needed adjustment or revision from initial production has been worked out and you are getting the “proven” product. So far been extremely happy with my 2023 model 3 and 2024 model Y That said these cars are so much like smart phones that leaps can be made that leave the owner wanting the newer tech. FSD has been enticing but not on HW3 vehicles (my model 3)
You should be able to totally enjoy a juniper model Y for 10 years, but tech will absolutely make some serious advances that along with regular marketing brainwashing will have yiu itching to upgrade

OTA updates means both cars are going to be better in future than they were when you bought them as new software releases roll out, but by the time the updates slow and eventually stop for both cars the Tesla is going to be significantly better than it was when you bought it. The BMW likely not so much. Plenty of other reasons to like the BMW, but the Tesla being so software-centric is an advantage, IMO, not a disadvantage.

Depends on what your expectations are. I wont be keeping mine past 2 years and I find that it is not built to last.

Almost all the maintenance is basically DIY with a Tesla and less than a gas car. They are:
\- Rotate Tires (6250 miles) / Replace Tires
\- Cabin Air Filter (1-3 years) / HEPA filter (probably good for 5-8 years)
\- Wiper blades (6m-3 years California lol)
\- Window Washer Fluid (as it goes empty)
All the guides are on here as well
[https://service.tesla.com/docs/Public/diy/modely/en\_us/](https://service.tesla.com/docs/Public/diy/modely/en_us/)
Everything else is mostly an "as needed" since not every car will have the issues that may require maintenance. I.e. never had to get the radiator or battery checked in my 6 years with the Model 3.

My wife's assessment of our 2026 MY AWD LR is, "It's just so damn fun and easy to drive." My assessment is, It's the finest ride I've ever parked my butt in." The 2026 MYJ is a cut above earlier model years of the MY and will last you a long time. The Tesla technology, which is the "secret sauce" for any EV is years ahead of the competition, and this assessment doesn't include FSD. And, when you have to use a Tesla Supercharger on a road trip or wherever, it is crazy simple and one of the huge advantages Teslas has over other cars, even those who can now use the Tesla charger network. The Tesla is "native" to the network.....all you have to do is open the charge port, plug it in, and walk away.....no messing with apps/credit cards/etc. It really is cool.

My dad is still driving his 2012 Model S. Screens are warped slightly, brakes make a little screeching, but overall still drives fine. He gets about 180-220 miles on full charge, not sure what % that is of original max. I have a 2019 model 3 and it’s still great, about 270 miles max range down from 320. But no mechanical issues. I plan on driving it until I won’t.

You will have significantly fewer problems with the Model Y than the I4.
Source, I own a collision shop that works on a lot of EV’s. I regularly see Model Y’s with 200k+ miles on the odometers.

Tesla directly. Prices have been reasonably.

Yes. I do check on the pads since I do my own tire rotation. They are still like new

The way it burns through washer fluid I am on my third refill after 15k miles. Everytime headlights or the sun light up the front cameras I get a liberal soaking of windshield wiper fluid

Definitely, but look for one that has done alignment for other Teslas.
Adjustmemts to everything except from toe have to be from slop in the attachment points. You will hear "not adjustable" from most. Better pros will know how, and expect to be paid for it.

I have seen people get really high mileage on their MY. The battery warranty is for 8 years so I don’t see why not. You sound like someone who takes care of their cars

What improvements were made that makes the model Y more durable?
Ime. Less things to break down for repair?

As someone who buys vehicles to keep (2012 Ram 2500 HD with 118k and a 2021 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with 43k), definitely. Model Y will be 1 year old in late April and has just over 5k miles on it. Our goal is to not buy another vehicle.

What’s the battery degradation looking like?

That’s seems pretty good to me. What’s the maximum mileage you get on one charge?

Still too early to determine on the 'lower maintenance'. It's built on the same tech/hardware to my knowledge. Better suspension is pretty much the only better thing than previous generation.

Originally it was a 515 km long range car. Now 448 kms at 100%. In the summer, in city stop and go traffic, you can do better than that. You lose range at fast highway speeds.

I have my 2021 still and over 90,000 miles on it. Will likely keep it another 2 years before I sell. Total of 7 years at least maybe more depending on how I feel.

A guy I know has a 2013 model S and it’s on like 300,000kms going strong. Get the Y juniper, op you will not regret it! Bonus if you get fsd, makes it even better

How often did you do tire rotation?

If you are looking down for 10 years, bmw may be a better optin. With Tesla you never know. If Elon finds he can make more money making something else, your model Y plant will be closed. I bought my MSP, three ears ago. I have no idea how long will i get parts. Of course there will be used parts from wrecked cars etc, but you get the idea

Tesla recommends every 6,250 miles, I normally try to stick to that. There’s a new Maintenance menu under Service, which can help you keep track of what services you done/need.

Depends on how often you drive on salted roads, how often you wash the car, etc. I finally had to replace the brakes on my GLI after 10 years/100k miles (it's a manual, so my brakes last a long time) because the rotors were rusted and pitted, but the pads still had life left

Usually getting oil changes done at dealerships cost that much
bigblu_1
2026-02-21 02:35
I have a Toyota and my local Toyota dealership does them for $59.99 (plus a small disposal fee of like $5ish dollars). I understand oil changes on Porsches or whatnot would cost a lot more, but can we really compare those to a Model Y?

Our model 3, due to be traded for a juniper shortly, has been totally flawless & has only lost 28kms range in 5 years. They’re way better than the “petrol head or dead” fraternity want everyone to think. Also, Tesla are the most efficient, power consumption wise, of all currently available EV’s, to the best of my knowledge.
