Someone successfully retrofitted Front bumper camera on HW4.0 model X

zxchin89 | 2025-07-10 04:18 | 285 views

Just came across this on Twitter/X - someone managed to retrofit a front bumper camera on their Tesla model X and it integrates perfectly with the correct settings. I figured many would pay for this retrofit and it seems like might be possible for 2024 HW4.0 model 3/S as well. Here's the original post: https://x.com/Tutrifour/status/1943020058260967883?t=WIwjujIQ02G-q1v5UefDcA&s=19 According to the author, these are the estimated parts needed and the only thing that is not a available directly from Tesla would be the "coax cable from the car computer to the front end bumper harness" Camera $200 Bumper Grill $80 Bumper Harness $130 Washer Pump $15 Washer Hoses $~30 Source - https://x.com/Tutrifour/status/1943025471115137157?t=G8jPtOpfphxpWDghdDQcNQ&s=19

I wonder what would happen, software wise, if a Highland plugged one in. I know it has the hardware input but will it automatically recognize it like the Y and X?

zxchin89 2025-07-10 04:35

You'll have to change some configuration in service mode for it to recognize the camera apparently  In addition to that, the HW4.0 computer must have the port populated (all model s/x with HW4.0 since day 1 will have it, but model 3/y will have to check the computer that came with the car).  Source - comments section in here - https://x.com/greentheonly/status/1943042992618770797?t=zxLXa795VZbLTkR-Y5N9Cg&s=19

Nice. Hopefully this is something Tesla won’t block (eg if model = 3 then don’t allow even if config id 131 is correct.)

OutrageousCandidate4 2025-07-10 04:44

Do you know if you have the front bumper ppf’d that it will have to be removed for this modification?

Ashkir 2025-07-10 04:54

I will gladly pay for my highland 2025 to get the front camera installed if Tesla ever offers it.

SliChillax 2025-07-10 05:31

Lets see if the ambient lighting can also be retrofitted

zxchin89 2025-07-10 05:35

Apparently it can and is available officially from Tesla, but in Korea only for now IINM  - https://x.com/Tslachan/status/1932653715489763820?t=YsLD0RzZ65Q0QW__N4gy4w&s=19

icy1007 2025-07-10 05:49

No Model 3 has a front camera. Doubt this would work.

linshunghuang 2025-07-10 06:22

I would gladly pay to retrofit my MX23, assuming the software actually utilizes it for parking sensors, self driving, etc.

Pattont 2025-07-10 06:33

This ^^ Could care less about the ambient lighting, but the extra camera I am 100% interested in. If they offer that missing cable I’m going for it.

KnubblMonster 2025-07-10 07:13

>You'll have to change some configuration in service mode for it to recognize the camera apparently  I guess that would be in subscription Service Mode+ not the free basic *service* password service mode.

SliChillax 2025-07-10 08:45

This is for the Model Y though? I meant for S and X

Front bumper camera [was] why I was holding off on buying a m3p. Now I’m forced to take delivery by September 30th. So I’m all for an official retrofit option. But why does it seem like Tesla overlooked the m3p? Like the Highland team derp’d on this and Tesla are oddly silent about it.

allaboutandroids 2025-07-10 11:55

I'd gladly pay for that upgrade. More importantly, why's there no wash for the rear camera?? It gets dirty after pretty much every drive. Don't get me started about winter time

spennnyy 2025-07-10 12:04

Tesla please let me give you money for this upgrade. Desperately want one for my refresh M3P.

dubie4x8 2025-07-10 13:36

Oh shit! No way, that’s awesome!

AWildDragon 2025-07-10 14:56

Per green the model 3 shares the same UI config as the model y does potentially allowing it to have the camera.

MrAgility888 2025-07-10 15:17

Now if they could retrofit ventilated seats into older Teslas, I would be all on board.

brayjr 2025-07-10 15:56

Funny enough it was supposed to have an front bumper cam. Look at the Highland early spy shots and marketing material, it's there.  Really wonder why it was removed before official release.

Garlic_Coin 2025-07-10 18:34

possibly supply chain issues, maybe couldn't get enough of them.

VideoGameJumanji 2025-07-10 18:49

Mine does not get dirty that fast at all (22Y), what are you driving

allaboutandroids 2025-07-10 18:55

2025 Model 3 Highland, Montréal area. The moment it rains, there is enough dust and dirt that coats the lens. Making it harder to see when trying to reverse park. Significantly worse in winter time. Being able to quickly power wash it will help tremendously

Would like to do this on my 2024 MX Plaid

colsandersloveskfc 2025-07-10 22:54

Aftermarket to the rescue, I added those to my 24 MYP and they are available for all models.

Hibbleton 2025-07-11 01:17

Curious as to which ones you fitted?

UnSCo 2025-07-11 01:41

Oh I LOVE this, thanks for pointing this out. Definitely will look into upgrading my ‘23 Model X.

icy1007 2025-07-11 02:35

The software in a Model 3 does not support this.

colsandersloveskfc 2025-07-11 04:07

I made a [post with more details](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModelY/s/Ooa6VDYUaM), it’s a kit from EVOffer

Hibbleton 2025-07-11 04:21

Awesome, thanks!

colsandersloveskfc 2025-07-11 04:26

Of course! Happy to answer any questions on the install process for the video I made that’s linked in the post or on the seats themselves.

MrAgility888 2025-07-11 05:12

I saw your post, those look really nice. I would just be afraid installing them wrong and having a safety issue or warranty problem. Wish Tesla could retrofit them.

zxchin89 2025-07-11 08:13

Have you tried applying rain repellent designed specifically for lenses?  One that comes to my mind now is the soft99 glaco mirror coat - https://www.soft99.co.jp/en/products/detail/04172/

allaboutandroids 2025-07-11 11:55

The Tesla manual states not to apply any product on the camera lenses so I've avoided that But if this would solve my issue, I'll gladly give it a try

aimfulwandering 2025-07-11 12:49

The software actually does support it if you update the config. The problem is that the *hardware* may not: the early highland MCU does not have the port populated on the PCBA, so there is nowhere to plug it in.

AWildDragon 2025-07-11 15:44

Per green the only there are 2 revisions of the MCU on highland. The second one has support for it and the changeover happened “late 2024”.

aimfulwandering 2025-07-11 16:08

This is correct

AWildDragon 2025-07-11 16:15

Have you heard anything on when that cutover happened or how to check as an owner? I have a model year 2025 highland built in late 2024.

aimfulwandering 2025-07-11 16:31

Only way I know for sure to check is to remove the glovebox and take a peek at the connectors present... karaknwfp 2025-07-13 05:07

Would like to do this on my model S Plaid 2024

takaiguchi 2025-07-14 20:04

That’s actually a really good price. I wonder if it’s coming to us and how much it will be.

Magnus_Tesshu 2025-07-24 19:58

Oof, I have one of the early performance from July or August (I don't remember) so probably don't have the hardware. I'm pretty sure having both cameras in front will be safer (for summon/banish/robotaxi) so a bit disappointed, as this news got my hopes up last week

Magnus_Tesshu 2025-07-24 19:59

I thought all the cameras except the forward facing are the same
