>Musk said Tesla will build Optimus robots instead in the same factory space in Fremont, California Honestly this might help reduce the costs. No way those lines are profitable to run. Now they just need to kill the Cybertruck.

letsgobernie 2026-01-28 22:56

Nice, replace one 1 unprofitable thing with another. Deeply problematic that what is supposed to be your high margin product is being replaced by a product far from production grade with no market.

motionbutton 2026-01-28 22:56

Why can’t Optimus build itself?

[deleted] 2026-01-28 22:59

for whatever reason reddit puts model x subreddits into my feed and its always the same post: thinking about buying a model x, how will this totally inconsequential thing make it ok that only 2500 of these sell a year are effectively hand built, get no support, spare parts, or 3rd party labor who wants to touch them. Please tell me to buy this car I will eventually lemon law back to tesla. Tnx. Both people I know who owned model x's lemon law'd them. The telsa bros said I was full of shit and now here is tesla pretty much admitting those models are done.

dynamadan 2026-01-28 23:06

Why can’t Optimus buy itself?

Bnrmn88 2026-01-28 23:09

I can understand on a certain level but it's the fantasy of autonomy he keeps talking about that should concern shareholders.

Crazy-Cook2035 2026-01-28 23:12

Cybertruck should have been discontinued That thing is a complete joke

admin_default 2026-01-28 23:13

Yup. The S and X don’t even make it into the top 20 EVs in the U.S.

AlwaysPhillyinSunny 2026-01-28 23:14

This kills Elmo’s juvenile S3XY naming scheme

CVGPi 2026-01-28 23:19

I mean this is foreseeable, though I'd expected they'd sell the 3 Performance and Y Performance as the S and X.

PortlandPetey 2026-01-28 23:23

That’s good news for RIVIAN and Lucid

Ok_Excitement725 2026-01-28 23:24

Yep except the cyber truck is Elons little ego project so he will keep that thing going til the bitter end I dare say.

Lacrewpandora 2026-01-28 23:25

>Once production ends, Tesla will build Optimus robots in the same factory space LOL is over-used, but that's exactly what I did.

oceanbeachguy 2026-01-28 23:26

Elmo announces the end of 1/3 of his product line, to be replaced with vaporware robots, $1.3 trillion is now entirely reliable on model 3 and y which are already 10 year old models with mid cycle refreshes. Margins are single digits. No growth. Everyone told me Tesla was a software company. Right now it sells cars at low single digit margins with Declining sales. You would have to be crazy to spend 60k on a robot that is going to be beta tested in your house, and probably set your house on fire trying to put a metal bowl in your microwave. Stock goes up….. I am tired…

enuffalreadyjeez 2026-01-28 23:26

But it has falconwing doors!

praguer56 2026-01-28 23:28

I've said for a few years that the 3 would replace the S and go hatchback at some point. The Model YL for sale in China will replace the X in the US and basics of the X will be reworked into something like a R1S.

HystericalSail 2026-01-28 23:29

Now it's just "Y3." Wonder if Kanye will approve or sue.

HystericalSail 2026-01-28 23:30

The air resistance problem, the one remaining stumbling block to Optimus building Tesla cars faster than anyone can buy them is nearly solved I take it.

mrbuttsavage 2026-01-28 23:30

Might as well shutdown Fremont at this rate.

Bannedwith1milKarma 2026-01-28 23:32

Didn't we know this?

Bannedwith1milKarma 2026-01-28 23:34

Don't forget most of the tooling won't be compatible. So it's an entire fit out of a factory as well.

pilgermann 2026-01-28 23:35

The doors (and imo the recessed handles on all Teslas) are classic examples of some designer probably thought of this already and some engineer shit canned the idea because it greatly reduced reliability and increased cost. Sure, there's some group think in car design, but a lot of standards are just what works.

letsgobernie 2026-01-28 23:42

No question about it. Not only incompatible, but overspeced, oversized, and a far larger line than what is needed. The paint shop, the stamping, the spot welders in the body shop, the pick and place for large auto parts, the electricals to run the heavy equipment, the dyno, calibration stations, test line, etc etc. all are useless to make a dumbass sex toy.

juiceyb 2026-01-28 23:44

I read this as Elon is firing half of his Fremont, California workers. Those people are going to be let go because none of them know how to assemble these robots so it hides the stink of unprofitable business. He needs this cash flow as he also said he is going to invest more on his AI company. It's amazing how none of this affects the CT which is a bigger failure than these two cars.

Recent-Afternoon8509 2026-01-28 23:48

Just wait until the truck orders pick up 😂

StampyScouse 2026-01-28 23:49

To be honest at the point we’re at now it’s probably more fitting than S3XY ever was.

totpot 2026-01-28 23:57

I mean, they were being outsold by the Cybertruck

masssy 2026-01-29 00:01

Well I had someone who argued that the automatically opening doors really helped them a lot in life. Like some argument that it saved them time stepping into the car or something. So according to what I heard from that guy I should get one ASAP to save me some seconds. Then I checked his post history.... "Help my automatic doors doesn't work". Yeah.

[deleted] 2026-01-29 00:08

You could give it the old LMAO.

Ok-Bill3318 2026-01-29 00:13

All of the “sold” vehicles are now in the Middle East to claim new sales numbers

CAbluehen 2026-01-29 00:13

And not really a location conducive to a work force that can afford to live near. Not anyones first choice for a large scale robot factory I'd think.

manu144x 2026-01-29 00:19

those doors paid by themselves in marketing savings that Tesla made. They were essentially advertising materials for Tesla that customers were paying for. And it worked spectacularly for the stock price.

Fockelot 2026-01-29 00:31

The old falconcougarthunderbirds!

Chrysolophylax 2026-01-29 00:34

>Musk said Tesla will build Optimus robots instead in the same factory space in Fremont, California Hell yeah, Elon, do it, keep making these amazing choices, you are the smartest boy who ever lived, you are the Musky Savior of Mankind, we are all peons who deserve only to kiss the hem of your garment. And we are definitely not whipping up a bunch of popcorn to nibble while you push this never-ending slow-motion train wreck. Keep shoveling that ketamine into every bodily orifice!

AZMD911 2026-01-29 00:39

And spacex bought a whole bunch I read

[deleted] 2026-01-29 00:41

You know whats got automatic doors? A mini van. That person should drive a mini van.

DeliciousAges 2026-01-29 00:44

Yes, because the Cybertruck is selling so well. Oh, wait... ;-) Elon Musk should have been replaced as Tesla's CEO many years ago. He is destroying Tesla's sales and brand value, one stupid decision at a time.

pavlik_enemy 2026-01-29 00:56

The handles make sense though if you want to squeeze every bit of aerodynamic efficiency

RedCrestedBreegull 2026-01-29 01:15

Those recessed handles have always bugged me from an ergonomic standpoint. If you really wanted greater efficiency, you could just dramatically the overall size of the cars. (Vehicles are too large in the U.S. in general.)

pavlik_enemy 2026-01-29 01:19

You can't sell small cars in US, it's just a fact

manicdan 2026-01-29 01:22

No roadster, no semi, the CT is trash, FSD is nearly a decade behind schedule if it launched tomorrow perfectly, and now kills the one car that got them to where they are today, along with that weird falcon minivan. If there werent a bunch of tech bros hodl'n their stock, he would have been kicked out so long ago. His only success was getting stock price to go up. I'm betting my next EV will be a Lucid.

Individual_Agency703 2026-01-29 01:33

CY3

Individual_Agency703 2026-01-29 01:35

Why can’t Optimus go fuck itself?

0reoSpeedwagon 2026-01-29 01:38

This is assuming they’re fitting anything to build something. I don’t think that’s a fair assumption to make.

CivilWay1444 2026-01-29 01:42

Value will go up.

enuffalreadyjeez 2026-01-29 01:43

I just remember the tesla fan boys going on about them like they were greatest advance in automotive technology ever.

CyberOvitron 2026-01-29 02:03

I don't know man, I think it's relative: I've been enjoying my X tremendously and feel blessed to own such an amazing piece of tech.

Bryanh100 2026-01-29 02:17

The market killed off those cars.

Don_T_Blink 2026-01-29 02:55

Who says it can't? How else would you stack and interlock them for transportation?

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-29 03:11

No more S3X for Tesla.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-29 03:13

They make sense if you want to create more parts for a feature that is more of a gimmick than anything of real value. Or if you just want to trap people inside to be broiled alive.

Individual_Agency703 2026-01-29 03:23

They will self-deliver by walking!

Fishbulb2 2026-01-29 03:23

Going with models P E D and O.

Basement_Chicken 2026-01-29 03:32

Buy a robot that falls on its back- hours and hours of laugh! Only $20k.

pavlik_enemy 2026-01-29 03:44

It's a luxury car (at least price-wise) so gimmicks that reduce buyer's range anxiety are fine

AbjectList8 2026-01-29 04:00

Kanye is apparently medicated now, released some long statement. Weird times, indeed.

SentinelZero 2026-01-29 04:05

Really its just YC; the 3 and Y are basically the same car so they can be considered one model, then theres the Cyberdump.

SentinelZero 2026-01-29 04:06

Really its on the Model Y; the 3 is the same car more or less but clearly the fatter Y is getting all the attention. The Cyberdump is a disaster and wont sell anything so yeah its on a fat amorphous blob minivan-thing that has barebones creature comforts and atrocious styling to somehow give Edolf his overblown payday. I hate this timeline so so much.

SentinelZero 2026-01-29 04:07

Full self fucking coming in HW version 69420

SentinelZero 2026-01-29 04:09

The S and X were basically abandoned once it became clear the Y aka fat model 3 was selling better than anticipated. Once Tesla realized they could halfass a new model and that brought in money and sales, why bother doing anything with the rest of the lineup? The X was a reliability nightmare and hadnt gotten any refreshes or updates in its whole lifespan and it was an overpriced blob.

SentinelZero 2026-01-29 04:09

Yes please buy this 100k+ minivan with shittier doors, bottom level reliability (so bad in fact that the X dragged Tesla down the list until the Cyberdump arrived and did the job even better) and no major refreshes and updates in its entire 10 year lifespan.

Financial_Ad_594 2026-01-29 05:20

Just pull the plug and end it.

AustrianMichael 2026-01-29 06:24

Calling it a SUV and not just a Minivan on wheels is quite something actually. I guess nobody ever took them even a little bit off-road

stikves 2026-01-29 06:48

Model X is the perfect size and has a lot of comfort features. However... they tried too much. Those "butterfly" doors are major points of failure. The price is 2x model Y, so with the same money you can get one for yourself and another for your wife. The only argument is the proper third row (yes 6 seater configuration is actually good) But... this is sad, I was expecting a fire sale...

darkearwig 2026-01-29 06:56

They may have been depending on how many people were on the line. There were 0 outside costs for those vehicles since they put 0 money into engineering or anything else with them. As long as they covered their inputs, they could have been ok. I can't imagine the Optimus will have any real demand given the track record Tesla has with ideas Elon has had. Everything up to the model y was already in the business plan before Elon took over. Literally every product Elon has dreamed up has been a failure.

Moceannl 2026-01-29 07:08

The difference in comfort is huge.

Lopsided_Quarter_931 2026-01-29 07:08

Can you explain why the S failed?

AustrianMichael 2026-01-29 08:08

They mentioned it might be changed to an autonomous delivery vehicle or something like that So like this Russia CyberVan haha https://www.carscoops.com/2026/01/russia-cybervan-russo-balt-f200-ev/

Rafxtt 2026-01-29 08:23

Might close the *Gigafactory* in Berlin soon too. Didn't reach half of production capacity, never will, soon will be at 1/4 capacity. You guys remember when Edolf Musk promised to build several Gigafactories worldwide - even India and sell 20Million+/year Teslas?! It was just a few years ago.. Tesla will make Enron seem like a kid tricking other kids to steal their pocket change.

herewego199209 2026-01-29 08:51

The only good news about this is that you'll probably be able to buy a newish model X or S for like $30k soon lol.

herewego199209 2026-01-29 08:53

Issue with the model X and S full stop is that they were priced as luxury vehicles and at those prices people will rather buy Audis, Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, Porsche, etc than a Tesla. Hell with these new Lucids, Rivians, etc coming out they're curb stomping them at the lxuury level as well. The reason why the Model Y was doing so well is because it was priced like a mid packaged Rav 4

thedeuceisloose 2026-01-29 10:20

Say that to the hot hatch community, there are millions of us, we just make the manufacturers too little money on the margins.

-TheExtraMile- 2026-01-29 11:38

Agreed, he will have a very hard time letting that one go. He might be force to eventually once the cash flow dries up even more. We’ll see

User-no-relation 2026-01-29 11:50

right because people only buy them because they are cheap

thedeuceisloose 2026-01-29 11:50

No, there’s an actual market there man lol. This is such an ameribrain moment

pavlik_enemy 2026-01-29 12:52

Aren't they gone even in Europe?

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-29 13:04

It's a normal car priced like a luxury car.

shoot_first 2026-01-29 14:04

1. Price kept it out of reach for most, so it’s a limited market. 2. It used to be a cool status car for the people that could afford it, but then Elon made an ass of himself by buying Twitter and ruining it, and then by buying the government and ruining it. Now most of the people that could afford it won’t be caught dead driving one.

ReadWriteHexecute 2026-01-29 14:21

blessed huh?

ReadWriteHexecute 2026-01-29 14:23

he too, sees the writing on the wall

enraged-urbanmech 2026-01-29 14:28

Reach deep, and pick up ROFL from ages long past.

nlaak 2026-01-29 14:35

> feel blessed to own such an amazing piece of tech. How much of the Kool-aid have you drunk? It's only a car, get a grip.

Savageinvt 2026-01-29 14:42

If I were ever to buy another Tesla, I have 4 kids and would need something much bigger (aka suburban size or AT LEAST Tahoe sized). The X was too small, even w/7 seats. Rivian is trash, I know several people who have had them and nothing but trouble and either switched back to Tesla or gas car. Until then, I'm happy driving big gas guzzling SUV's and trucks.

ecplectico 2026-01-29 14:54

Tesla is killing off Tesla

DistributedView 2026-01-29 14:57

The S has failed now because it hasn't kept up with safety standards. It would not get 5* if it went through a current agency test in the US or Europe. This is because Tesla has never set aside any money for replacement models, meanwhile safety standards get higher and higher. A 2012 EuroNCAP 5 star car would be a 2026 3 star car at best, and that's just the crash part. A 2012 Model S would not be allowed to be sold as a new car today. Coming soon to the Model 3...

DistributedView 2026-01-29 15:01

SX3Y if actually taken in release order and ignoring the Roadster. The whole S3XY thing was a ketamine induced fluke rather than some 5d chess genius naming plan.

DistributedView 2026-01-29 15:10

The hilarious part to this is that originally the front doors didn't auto open. It was when someone pointed out that a huge number of these would be as a status symbol and predominantly driven as single occupancy vehicles that someone realized: hang on - the fancy doors will never open in day to day use. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Blackpanthertesla 2026-01-29 15:25

I love my model S. I basically have no cost associated with this car as I feed it from my solar panels. Dumbest decision tesla has ever made.

J_M 2026-01-29 16:00

Technically car buyers are killing off Tesla models - everyone stupid enough to buy already has one and many that had one now know better than to ever buy another.

FrozenUruguayBallbac 2026-01-29 16:04

imma be real that does not even look that bad lol

FrozenUruguayBallbac 2026-01-29 16:16

Back in 2018 my family got a model x and we had a cayenne prior. It was alright but DAM it was a fucking lemon. Towards the end off the lease it started making weird ass squeaking (sounded more like souls of the damned screaming for help) noises that were coming from... something, the rear doors had issues opening if you used the touchscreen and ended its lease as a shitbox. We replaced it with a taycan and my dad got an ioniq 5 for his business and we haven't looked back. I will defend the ioniq 5 forever. If you want a no frills A-B midsized EV, get an ioniq 5.

TheRuneMeister 2026-01-29 16:30

I don’t care what anyone says, the first time I saw a video of a Model X doing the light show to wizards in winter, I was sold on the gull wings and the format. I will never get an X (they aren’t even sold here), but that car will have some sort of special place in my heart.

lgdsf 2026-01-29 16:42

How has the stock not crashed?? Elon really found the sweet spot for lying his way through anything I guess

Intelligent-Rest-231 2026-01-29 17:01

It’s like trusting a school district issued Chromebook with your life. No thanks.

[deleted] 2026-01-29 18:34

We owned a model y 7 seater. A model y with 7 seats is a mistake. It shouldn't have been made and my wife should have tried sitting in the back seat before pulling the trigger.

[deleted] 2026-01-29 18:35

I can. Someone else has already done a decent job tho.

CyberOvitron 2026-01-29 19:05

Excuse me for appreciating what life offered.

WrongSAW 2026-01-29 19:50

It is really meant for "emergency" use only or children. Like many people only need 7 seats occasionally this the model y would be perfect since you dont need to deal with the parking for bigger car and getting the better mileage on having smaller car

[deleted] 2026-01-30 03:08

Oh you must have talked to a very different sales person than my wife did because they didn't say anything like that in the slightest. The seat lease latches didn't explain that, and the manual didn't either. Do you have any shred of documentation or a receipt that might back your... Interesting claim?

fwilljr 2026-02-01 03:23

☝🏾☝🏾💯this

mjkbNerd 2026-02-02 09:25

nobody wants the cars now....why should the value go up?

mjkbNerd 2026-02-02 09:26

he just needs to say ROBOTS and AI.... CYBERTAXI and the stock prices goes boom . ...

[deleted] 2026-02-02 10:35

After watching Get Shorty, a minivan is all I want.

[deleted] 2026-02-02 10:36

3. Model 3 pretty much just as good for most people, and far cheaper. Same for the Model Y vs X.

[deleted] 2026-02-02 21:58

I have an vs buzz, it's a minivan.
