Retrospectively, everybody who paid for that reservation was stupid to do so. Put that $50k into Tesla stock and you‘d have gotten a huge profit. Even if you couldn’t have foreseen how the stock price would evolve, there still was a nice chance to get the money for the car for free basically. It’s also not like you need the money and can’t afford to lose it if you put it up for a years long reservation. And you can also always cash out and use the gained money for something else if you buy stock.

Durzel 2025-11-03 15:31

Ehh, back in 2017 you could probably be forgiven for thinking that Elon, and Tesla, would actually get the Roadster 2.0 out in a reasonable amount of time. It's not outrageous for people to wait a year or more to get a supercar. Letters of intent and deposits are not unheard of there either. BYD announced, exhibited and started shipping to customers an EV hypercar (Yangwang U9) in the space of about a year. Tesla ought to have been able to do likewise. Alas Sam and co didn't bank on Tesla stock becoming detached from any kind of reality due to Elon enjoying a bottomless pool of credulity from Wall Street, and therefore a much more prudent place to stick $50k. That, and him losing interest in cars almost entirely.

TheMegaDriver2 2025-11-03 15:31

Tesla just casually stealing the deposits. Many idiots who reserved the vapor ware have been trying to get the money back.

Kamen_rider_B 2025-11-03 15:38

Funny thing is, that’s what Elon probably did with everyone’s money. Put it in stock which Bumps up the price, then more people invest after seeing the bump, bumps up price even more. Keeps bumping

herewego199209 2025-11-03 15:41

Yeah I don't get what the hold up is on it?

Durzel 2025-11-03 15:43

Because Elon = Tesla, and Tesla = Elon. If he's not interested, it doesn't get made, and if he's really interested despite it being a patently dumb idea (i.e. Cybertruck) that distracts the company from making something actually profitable (e.g. Model 2) - it does.

Common-Violinist-305 2025-11-03 15:47

or the interest

wootnootlol 2025-11-03 15:50

Grifting a grifter.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 15:53

Elon literally tweeted that his refund was processed within 24hours of cancellation. What are we missing?

Jaguarmadillo 2025-11-03 15:54

Well it’s definitely going to fly now so every cloud has a silvery vapour-like lining

Evening_One3605 2025-11-03 16:00

Nothing it doesn’t fit the narrative so scam altman’s words must be taken over Elmo musk’s

cseckshun 2025-11-03 16:01

I wouldn’t take anything that Elon Musk says as true unless a few other people who don’t work for him have also said it. He has an extensive history of lying.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 16:11

I take his “promises” with grain of salt, but $50k refund? You think Altman would just sit around and take it? Let’s use some brains people.

TheFoxsWeddingTarot 2025-11-03 16:19

I knew someone who put down $250k.

TranslatorOnly3298 2025-11-03 16:23

To be fair, that’s what happens when you trust a con man

01_vampyr 2025-11-03 16:23

Being skeptical to the point of conspiracy - and being vocal about it - will only lead to hurting the movement you're a part of, and lowering the bar. Shame on you.

Lacrewpandora 2025-11-03 16:27

>What are we missing? I dunno...perhaps the reality that the man lies autonomically.

wesweb 2025-11-03 16:28

> I feel a hate crime coming on

Lacrewpandora 2025-11-03 16:29

IIRC, later legal depositions have shown that at the time of the Roadster grift, TSLA was a month away from running out of cash. So Musk just used the money to keep the lights on at the time.

pickledpunt 2025-11-03 16:31

This isn't a point of conspiracy. It's a legitimate point. Elon lies constantly. He has been caught lying constantly. Being vocal saying it's a conspiracy that Elon lies will only hurt any chance of people stopping believing everything that comes out of his lying mouth. Shame on you.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 16:33

So you’re saying Sam Altman is just ok with not getting his refund back huh. If he truly didn’t get his refund back, he’d probably get his army of lawyers to sue Tesla and Elon for breach of contract, not because he needs the $50k but because of pure spite. FFS.

Lacrewpandora 2025-11-03 16:36

I don't think ypu understand what's going on here. Of course SA can hire a gazillion lawyers and get his $$ back...but he's advertising to the world what an enormous PITA it is for a "normal" person - to illustrate what a crook Musk is. Its a $billionaire slap fight - just watch and enjoy and quit rooting for Elon.

Lacrewpandora 2025-11-03 16:38

Have you ever tried to get this person to invest in dehydrated water or bridge sales?

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 16:40

1) I’m not rooting for Elon and I do not have position in TSLA stock. So let’s get that straight . 2) I’ve personally had zero issues getting my refund back in cybertruck reservation I’ve held on to for several years, so for “normal” people like me, it’s not an issue 3) have you yourself had difficulty or issues with Tesla reservation refund?? It’s just hilarious how people on both left and right will absolutely jump with their media of choice and crucify without hard evidence and experience. It’s also frightening.

deZbrownT 2025-11-03 16:43

If you put 50k into that, then yes you are one of those people who can lose that kind of money and not think much about it. A reasonable person would put that amount towards anything else before it would do that, hell you can put that into Tesla stock and get a smarter value for it. So yeah, people who put 50k into that can lose that money and not get emotional about it.

[deleted] 2025-11-03 16:52

I think because he’s rich that folks assume he’s honest. Dude’s a massive liar.

[deleted] 2025-11-03 16:52

$50K to him is like a Chipotle bowl to us.

Lacrewpandora 2025-11-03 16:54

I think there's some physical constraints. Branch Elonians have been conditioned to worship at the altar of zero to 60 times, and the advertised time for the Roadster is 1.90 seconds. IIRC, the Model S Plaid gets 1.99 seconds - impressive for sure, but also pushing the limit of what tires can do. Some people have even claimed to get 1.90 in a Model S...but however fast the Model S is, the Roadster will have to be faster, to please Elongelicals - and I think that's a huge hurdle. Musk's way around this is "cold thrusters" to get to 1.1 seconds, but I imagine that even in a company as rotten to the core as TSLA, he's getting some serious pushback on that. Its such a terrible idea.

Quirky_Tradition_806 2025-11-03 16:57

Spare me the poor-man routine, Sam. Sam Altman is a wealthy individual, capable of wielding his financial power to challenge Tesla in ways that could severely impact their public relations image, in ways most of us cannot. Tesla has enough enemies in Sacramento that he can make their life miserable if he really wants to; but what's $ 50K for him other than a trolling vehicle and a lightweight PR nightmare?

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 16:57

Yes but because he hates Elon, he’s not going to just sit around and do nothing, for that chipotle bowl, if in fact he didn’t get his refund.

babypho 2025-11-03 16:58

>It’s just hilarious how people on both left and right will absolutely jump with their media of choice and crucify without hard evidence and experience Is this a left or right issue though? Not sure why every issue nowadays is either a left or right issue. I think this is just a people dont like Elon type of issue.

sykemol 2025-11-03 16:58

People don't put down deposits in order to maximum dollar value. They put down deposits because they want to be first in line for the car. They are not expecting or wanting a return on those monies. Additionally, you shouldn't put money you think you'll need in the near term--near term being the next couple years--in the stock market. The stock market can go down and stay down for long periods of time. If you are planning on buying a car in the near term, you absolutely not put that money in the stock market.

Lacrewpandora 2025-11-03 17:00

>have you yourself had difficulty or issues with Tesla reservation refund Chuckle...a prerequisite for that would be my being dumb enough to make a reservation with TSLA. So no, I can't point to a personal experience. But I did find this new search engine called Google - and seems like a lot of people have had trouble.

oh_woo_fee 2025-11-03 17:06

Missed the facts it’s Elon

The_Lutter 2025-11-03 17:10

I could give a shit about SA but imagine putting up a $5,000 deposit on something as a normal person for anything and the company being like "oh sorry we lost your account." lol. Wouldn't fly with me either. That said this dude has Elon's number. He could just call him. He's just starting shit.

readit145 2025-11-03 17:11

Respectively. Anyone that put a dollar into Tesla is stupid. No I don’t care what the price action has done I’ve literally worked in the building. Based of logical thinking (what stocks were intended to do) I’d never invest a dime there. Didn’t even take the free stock options 😆. Now that said would I be better off had I not used logic, yes I would. But I refuse to support a modern day slave driver. I firmly believe breaking people at the expense of my bank account is not the way.

Inconceivable76 2025-11-03 17:11

Which would go to mediation and paid and under an NDA

Inconceivable76 2025-11-03 17:13

King of Glovi has seen through Elon’s bullshit for a lot longer than it was popular.

Inconceivable76 2025-11-03 17:18

One. He lied his ass off on the specs. It doesn’t matter how long he waits. It will never happen.  Two. They gave out roadsters for referrals. They owe quite a few people free cars now. I think Fred alone is owed two or three.

Jonesy1966 2025-11-03 17:23

It's not the value of the money, it's the principle. It could also lead to further lawsuits, perhaps leading to a class action

beren12 2025-11-03 17:27

Reality is a conspiracy now?

[deleted] 2025-11-03 17:28

My understanding based on what that tech youtuber's experience was is you only get $45k back, Tesla keeps the $5k deposit (I guess it was nonrefundable but after this much time, it is ridiculous), something like

beren12 2025-11-03 17:28

What narrative?

beren12 2025-11-03 17:31

If I put down money for a product, and it never got made, yes. I am expecting that money back. It wasn’t some Angel investor BS, it’s a deposit.

beren12 2025-11-03 17:32

I don’t see anything wrong with showing a scam to be a scam

01_vampyr 2025-11-03 17:34

Reality? So you have evidence of the case in question?

TheFoxsWeddingTarot 2025-11-03 17:35

He was also a HUGE fan of this idiot robot. It was always around the office doing noting. We called it “Pepper the depressed robot” because it could never do anything and just sort of made depressed sounds. https://us.softbankrobotics.com/pepper

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 17:41

In that case ok. I don’t really care for Elon and his millions of unfulfilled promises.

sykemol 2025-11-03 17:42

Of course you should get the money back. "Return" in this case means return on investment. Deposits aren't investments. They are deposits.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 17:42

Uh no…Sam Altman would not go the “mediation” route. He hates Elon enough to spite him.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 17:46

They should absolutely sue Elon and Tesla if this is the case.

jaimi_wanders 2025-11-03 17:49

They kept the initial $5000 so he only got $45k back

Nickeless 2025-11-03 17:57

I think with a normal company that isn’t likely to eventually become the next Enron, you would assume that if they fail to deliver a product that people are putting a deposit on, the stock price isn’t going to go to the moon…. I mean, duh.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 17:58

At least he didn't figuratively tweet.

Nickeless 2025-11-03 17:59

Also why the fuck would you think if they fail to deliver products that people have paid for, that the stock would go up? OP’s logic makes absolutely ZERO sense. You want a product, you put down the deposit to get it. Seems straightforward. Only in hindsight does someone say, welp woulda been better to invest because the stock went to the moon, while they lie and fail to deliver on promises in general.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 18:00

It only a lot more people put principle above all.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 18:00

If he really wants to get him back, he'll sue and get the attorneys started on a class action.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 18:02

$50k isn't a whole lot to people that rich, otherwise he wouldn't have waiting this long to wonder where his car is. I hope he does go after him out of spite. Regardless of what anyone thinks of him, he is right in this matter.

madreag 2025-11-03 18:02

I can’t believe this made the news… it’s like a penny for Sam.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 18:03

Exactly. Get out the popcorn.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 18:04

$50k of TSLA in 2018 would be worth about $1M today. What a bunch of fools to put deposits on vaporware.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 18:05

Yes, he's making a public spectacle of the situation. It's not the money so much as wanting to out Felon.

DjKennedy92 2025-11-03 18:08

I wouldn’t take what a random redditor says as true either. There was a similar story regarding Marques Brownlee a couple weeks back. Guess what, he got the deposit back. There was just an extra step.

Frequent-Sir-4253 2025-11-03 18:13

So why hasn’t Sam said he’s lying then?

Evening_One3605 2025-11-03 18:25

The narrative that he didn’t get back his deposit. Are you paying attention?

[deleted] 2025-11-03 18:36

People in charge of trillions of dollars in enterprises arguing over $50k.  Earth is doomed

Putrid_Honey_3330 2025-11-03 18:40

They're worth trillions on paper but not. Until they cash out and sell its all tangential "value".

[deleted] 2025-11-03 18:41

That’s true.  But they still represent an outsized portion of our economy

AustrianMichael 2025-11-03 18:43

$250,000 in $TSLA 8 years ago would be 5.6 million by now

AustrianMichael 2025-11-03 18:44

> Put that $50k into Tesla stock and you‘d have gotten a huge profit. Not just a huge profit - 1.13 million if you invested $50,000 in Tesla 8 years ago

[deleted] 2025-11-03 18:55

Strapping rockets to the rear of an EV. What could possibly go wrong?

Debatablewisdom 2025-11-03 18:56

Branch Elonians lmaooo

DreadpirateBG 2025-11-03 19:15

Would love that roadster as a base model with the model 3 drive train. Even just rear wheel drive. Make you super car if you want but let’s get some sales of a base model. They don’t need a freaking hallo super car. Those are just for the stupid rich.

HiramAbiff2020 2025-11-03 19:27

I have a feeling that there is massive accounting fraud going on at Tesla but because our agencies that look into that sort of thing are practically gutted and toothless there’s really nothing they can do about it. Even if they brought charges I don’t think the Trump DOJ would do anything either. It’s all out corruption and it hasn’t even been a year.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 19:52

Exactly, but more than likely, Tesla already refunded his deposit and he doesn’t have a case at that point. That’s what I was trying to say.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 19:52

Was the $5k of the $45k non refundable? If that’s the case, what’s the issue?

Inconceivable76 2025-11-03 19:53

You have to opt out of mediation with Tesla.

cseckshun 2025-11-03 20:11

Who said anything about sitting around? Lawsuits take time and it’s unlikely we are going to see the results in a Twitter thread if Sam Altman is going that direction to get his deposit back. I’m not saying anything about what the actual scenario is, I’m just saying that Elon Musk claiming Altman already got his deposit back is unconvincing to me since the word of Elon Musk has historically been an unreliable source. Unreliable even when he is acting as the CEO of Tesla and making statements in that capacity, let alone when it’s his personal Twitter account shitposting and beefing with other users.

sagetraveler 2025-11-03 20:11

Need fans for downforce. See McMurtry Speirling.

Movie_Slug 2025-11-03 20:19

Remember to throw your dehydrated water at Orat and push the rock off the bridge to kill the spider droid.  Also the Motherships coordinates are Elon’s favorite sector.

AspiringMurse96 2025-11-03 20:26

All those deposits are glorified interest-free loans.

Eastern_Interest_908 2025-11-03 20:27

I'm conflicted if I should be happy about it or not.

Pancheel 2025-11-03 20:27

He's losing interest in reality, he's more like a "techno fantasy story teller" now.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 20:45

But did he only get it because he brought it up in public? How many are there that haven't gotten theirs back?

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 20:56

Right, and I’m saying that if Elon was in fact lying, Sam Altman wouldn’t just be sitting on his hands and letting Elon bash him on X. Just saying.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 20:57

If it’s NON refundable deposit, then you don’t get that non refundable portion back. If it’s refundable, you’re supposed to get it back. If you don’t, you have a legal case. I honestly don’t know how many people had issues with getting their refund back, but it’s usually the small minority who did run into issues that are the most vocal on internet. Like I said, I’ve received my deposit back with no issues. If the number is much greater, they absolutely should get together and file a class law suit.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:01

Yes, but the "nonfundable" is still taken under a promise to provide something. You can't hold someone's deposit when all you have is vaporware.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:03

Yeah and $50k in 2018 would be $1M now.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:05

I'll sell him some oceanfront propety in Las Vegas. The Boring Co. is supposed to dig out the desert to the Pacific next year.

Hirschkuh1337 2025-11-03 21:05

so glad to life in the EU. Customer rights guarantee the return of those deposits.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:07

Yes, they are expecting something in return. Not cash, but they are expecting to be the first ones to get cars which in this case should have come in a couple of years yet here it is 7 years later and they have nothing to show for it.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:08

The deposits become someone else's investment.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:11

I don't think they are toothless. I think Felon has some type of leverage beyond his investment in the White House. This fraud has been going on far too long to just have been an oversight.

sykemol 2025-11-03 21:11

"Return" in this case means return on investment. Deposits aren't investments. They are deposits.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:12

I think there should be far more of these scams called out into the open. Modern business is full of lies and deception.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 21:13

You nailed it.

cseckshun 2025-11-03 21:45

How do you know that Sam Altman is sitting on his hands doing nothing if Elon Musk hasn’t paid out the refund? You would not know that. Like I said, lawsuits take time and if he is going through legal means instead of a twitter flame war to get his deposit back then you would not know about it. You are acting like you know exactly what’s happening because you assume that it is a guarantee that Sam Altman would post the details to X if your scenario weren’t true, I’m saying you can’t know that. I know it probably FEELS like you are certain, but there is no way you can be certain about this. You might end up being right! But there is no way you can be certain about this.

YoshimuraPipe 2025-11-03 21:51

Basically saying I could be right, I could be wrong. But there is no way I can REALLY know unless I am either Sam Altman or Elon musk or both. You’re right, it’s my best assumption based on givens.

HiramAbiff2020 2025-11-03 22:39

I think he has the knack for just how bureaucratic and slow government can be so he takes advantage of those shortcomings. The agencies have been toothless for decades.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-03 22:42

We know he's been to Epstein Island, which means he knows others who have been there.

HiramAbiff2020 2025-11-03 22:56

For sure, that Trump tweet that everyone knew about was an attempt to take the eyes off of him.

Actual__Wizard 2025-11-03 23:03

So he got scammed?

CaptainMegaNads 2025-11-03 23:30

I mean, thats exactly what Tesla stock does. Earnings miss? Stock goes up. Public wrongful death lawsuit? Stock goes up. Lie to the public about delivering FSD? Stock goes up. See the pattern? Does it make any sense? Not at all. Will it eventually correct? Probably, but not before the wheels fall off at Tesla. Irrational to the end is my prediction.

stupid_cat_face 2025-11-04 00:03

Oh nooooooes

cronx42 2025-11-04 02:10

I think it was $250,000 not $50,000.

yugami 2025-11-04 03:35

capital_folly 2025-11-04 04:31

That’s the irony two of Silicon Valley’s biggest “vision-first” leaders colliding over undelivered products. Perfect metaphor for belief-based capitalism.
