[Tesla drivers can pursue class action over self-driving claims, judge rules](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/tesla-drivers-can-pursue-class-action-over-self-driving-claims-judge-rules/ar-AA1KOewZ?ocid=BingNewsSerp&fbclid=IwY2xjawMRi3hleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHklgQ5R2omWW-0vMe3kQUXzYk1Acnl3qwWAD_p0j2abM3dCJWvy3cN29Drmb_aem_E4-KsHlX3_HrL1lWpDWsKQ) > Tesla must face a certified class action by California drivers who said Elon Musk misled them for eight years about the self-driving capabilities of his company's electric vehicles. >U.S. District Judge Rita Lin said the common question of whether Tesla lacked sensors to achieve high-level autonomy plus its inability to "demonstrate a long-distance autonomous drive with any of its vehicles" justified group lawsuits by two sets of drivers who bought its Full Self-Driving technology package. >In her decision on Monday, the San Francisco-based judge also said thousands of people likely saw Tesla's claim in the "Autopilot" section of its website from October 2016 to August 2024 that its vehicles contained hardware for full self-driving.

Excellent news.

mustangfan12 2025-08-19 17:05

Amazing news

Normal-Selection1537 2025-08-19 17:19

About time.

TiredBrakes 2025-08-19 17:21

Is this the beginning of the end?

Zealousideal_Draw924 2025-08-19 17:24

Some text in there about arbitration and opting out. Just wait. That will get knocked and we’ll all join the class

Dommccabe 2025-08-19 17:33

This needs to be ALL OVER every tesla sub.. Justice for the people from the con man fraudster.

CouncilmanRickPrime 2025-08-19 17:37

Yes. It'll probably get dragged out, but losing this lawsuit, tax credits and losing market share, as well as failing to have robotaxis with no drivers, will eventually be the end of Tesla.

[deleted] 2025-08-19 17:40

Time to short the stock yet?

praguer56 2025-08-19 17:42

What happens when owners win? Will Tesla remove FSD from all those vehicles and they are with no form of cruise control? Or will people keep it because they already paid for it? That's the only thing that concerns me. Be a part of the class action, win a few bucks but then lose the only cruise control system I have.

TheLongestLake 2025-08-19 17:47

The lawsuit isn't about having a cruise control or assisted driving technology. It's about the naming and marketing. If Tesla were to lose fully in court (not sure if they will) they may just be forced to change name. But wouldn't have to change the tech.

cullenjwebb 2025-08-19 17:47

This lawsuit affects the fundamentals and that's not really what the company runs on. Will it break the spell? That I don't know.

praguer56 2025-08-19 17:49

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Tesla superfans who lost their wives and children in FSD crashes are about to demand this judge resigns immediately and apologizes to Elon.

Working_Dependent560 2025-08-19 18:07

I don’t think it will ‘break the spell’ or break Tesla. This opinion is based on the current administration not seeking revenge after their recent disagreement

Red-FFFFFF-Blue 2025-08-19 18:12

The value of Autopilot/FSD is now effectively $Zero.

Red-FFFFFF-Blue 2025-08-19 18:17

Did you opt out of arbitration?

Lacrewpandora 2025-08-19 18:29

>who lost their wives and children in FSD crashes To be fair, some just lost their families after opting to buy a Cybertruck.

Ok-Scarcity-5754 2025-08-19 18:34

Is there a way to tell? Ngl I didn’t read the fine print as closely as I should have

jregovic 2025-08-19 18:36

Bullish! Stock up 15%, shorts in shambles….

RyanOfTheVille 2025-08-19 18:43

What I’m hearing is the stocks are going up?

ExcitingMeet2443 2025-08-19 18:45

NSD? Non Self Driving?

cullenjwebb 2025-08-19 18:51

Shorting a meme stock based on fundamentally bad news isn't a reliable strategy.

Engunnear 2025-08-19 18:57

It's already essentially a cryptocurrency... why should that change?

Engunnear 2025-08-19 18:59

Their families weren't committed to THE MISSION.

Lacrewpandora 2025-08-19 19:02

Its for the best. If a woman won't willingly ride around in an Incel Camino, there's absolutely no way she's following her man to Mars.

TheLongestLake 2025-08-19 19:04

I feel like Full-Assisted Driving wouldn't have this legal issue. Its even possible FSD wouldn't have legal liability if Elon and Tesla didn't constantly say stuff like "the person is just there for a demonstration"

killbot0224 2025-08-19 19:06

It's not bullshit. The stock isn't related to reality. Hasn't been for 10 years. Ever since he started lying about FSD. "Full Self Driving" is not an ambiguous label. It is fraud.

killbot0224 2025-08-19 19:07

Refund the premium you paid, hopefully. It was always a scam to get people to pay ahead of time for a feature with no delivery date. Which *still has no delivery date*

killbot0224 2025-08-19 19:07

You would presumably have to refund the $ gained via that false advertising as well.

praguer56 2025-08-19 19:13

Yeah. I paid $12,000 for FSD and couldn't use it for damn near 6 months and then it was hit or miss depending on my driving. Now, anyone can have the newest version for $4,000 less and no scoring to actually use it. Elon has publically said that HW3 units would be upgraded for free once all the bugs have been sorted. Well, here we are nearing the deployment of HW5 next year and we're still waiting for our HW4 upgrade. As someone said, as long as there are new iterations Musk will continue to claim that it hasn't been sorted out. If anything, give me a $4,000 refund!

jmouw88 2025-08-19 19:19

I speculate they will see good volume in the US in Q3 thanks to the expiration of the EV tax credits. Seems reasonable that anyone looking to buy a tesla in the next year would look to jump while the tax credit is still available. I may take a stab at shorting before Q4 earnings are released.

TheLongestLake 2025-08-19 19:20

Definitely.

AllNoise-NoSignal 2025-08-19 19:35

And this is in addition to a case in California (Tesla v DMV) that's currently being decided that could have Tesla ordered to refund money to people who thought they were getting FSD (and not FSD\*). Could also result in them not being able to sell cars in CA for 30 days. Drop the hammer on em' Judge Cox!

AllNoise-NoSignal 2025-08-19 19:36

Fuck shorting, too dangerous. But may I recommend TSLS, 1x Inverse ETF.

fd6270 2025-08-19 19:40

Lol all of the other Tesla subs are just fan pages, typically no negative news is allowed.

ThePhilJackson5 2025-08-19 19:50

No. Way.

[deleted] 2025-08-19 19:53

LOVE MY TRUCK HURRRRRR

Ok-Scarcity-5754 2025-08-19 19:57

Thank you for the response

Dommccabe 2025-08-19 20:42

So true I'm banned from most of them for telling the truth... it's too much for them to take.

Affectionate-Sink721 2025-08-19 20:46

Damn that means tesla stock will go up by 5%

Born-Gur-1275 2025-08-19 21:07

Musk’s distain for using Lidar, instead relying on cheaper AI and cameras is his biggest mistake. Waymo has a huge lead that made Musk the poster stooge for crappy cheap decisions.

wraith_majestic 2025-08-19 21:18

But they won’t… “best car Ive ever owned” and they will wait for the OTA patch to fix it.

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-08-19 21:28

Me too. Got banned from Tesla investors for repeatedly raising questions about basic facts of the company and owner.

jason12745 2025-08-19 21:42

Elon being involved with Tesla was the beginning of the end.

jason12745 2025-08-19 21:43

Sure. In 11 years when this reaches its conclusion you will be well rewarded.

newfyorker 2025-08-19 21:54

I mean then haven’t been able to sell cars for like 180 days. No one wants them 😅

Top_Junket2991 2025-08-19 21:59

Except in bitcoin its not some entity losing money. Check GME or AMC. Eventually the stock goes down when company continues to lose money

bostondana2 2025-08-19 22:10

I want them ... But then again, I run a rage room...

Engunnear 2025-08-19 22:11

Either way, it’s built on sand.

Dch131 2025-08-19 22:13

This needs to happen on on September 1! Stop sale for 30 days followed by the lost if federal tax credit.

[deleted] 2025-08-19 22:49

It’s starting.

Grunge4U 2025-08-20 00:05

I hope that every Tesla customer who ever purchased auto pilot or fsd gets a letter in a mail to join this lawsuit.

ILikeCatsAndSquids 2025-08-20 00:23

But William Blair said it’s all computer.

y4udothistome 2025-08-20 00:26

Can you smell it. It smells like roses. House of pain

Grunge4U 2025-08-20 02:00

Exactly what I was thinking. Maximum impact on Tesla sales

Informal_Tell78 2025-08-20 03:15

But it'll be out next week!

happymancry 2025-08-20 04:03

Judge “Rita Lin” you say… let me go check to make sure this isn’t The Onion. The irony would be too delicious!

Withnail2019 2025-08-20 05:29

Wreck him. Good job judge Rita.

longebane 2025-08-20 06:16

Every fkn thread. Keep beating that dead horse you guys

dagelijksestijl 2025-08-20 08:39

It’ll even be convenient for TSLA which can just blame California

TannedSam 2025-08-20 12:07

AMC is in the toilet, but GME is up 1,833% over the past 5 years, up 25% over the past two years, and basically flat over the past year.

CivicSyrup 2025-08-20 14:37

you're saying TSLA is already bankrupt?

g_rich 2025-08-20 14:49

Likely you wouldn't lose the current ADAS, you would just get a certain percentage of what you paid for it back and Tesla will need to reword how they advertise self-driving going forward. They kind of already do this, likely due to the mounting criticisms and pending litigation around self-driving, by referring to it as supervised. The reality is this won't inflict any more damage than Musk has already done himself, but it will force them to admit that autopilot / self-driving is nothing more than a level 2 ADAS. Then you'll have the occasional headline with Musk continuing to insist that Tesla's are self-driving and full self-driving is right around the corner despite the court order stipulating he can not.

itzyahmanjones 2025-08-22 00:23

I still don’t get why anyone would want a self driving car. Driving is fun.

Keyboard-Amazon 2025-08-22 08:58

The judge Rita Lin exists lol [https://cand.uscourts.gov/judges/lin-rita-f-rfl/](https://cand.uscourts.gov/judges/lin-rita-f-rfl/) [https://www.uclawsf.edu/people/rita-lin/](https://www.uclawsf.edu/people/rita-lin/)

Release the Kracken.

LA-Aron 2025-08-25 03:20

Smells like it. They're fucked. That lawyer has their number. Maybe selling self driving when its not actually that, giving people false confidence, some die..maybe the "move fast and break things" approach should be set aside for safety.

uspatent6081744a 2025-08-25 15:46

Anyone know how to join this class action?

East_Ordinary2352 2025-09-01 17:23

Wondering if there are any Canadian Tesla owners on this thread and interested in bringing this suit over.

East_Ordinary2352 2025-09-01 17:24

pm me!

Darshadow6 2025-09-20 17:53

Why do you want that the self driving technology they have is actually great for old people and helps reduce fatigue with driving. There's no other car that comes close to the driving technology

Old-Implement5652 2025-10-03 18:06

Lol a 1 month no revenue period isn't "maximum impact on Tesla sales." Any company that wilfully lies to its customers should be shut down

[deleted] 2025-10-04 09:57

They make about $100 billion a year, it isn’t peanuts.  But growth has flatlined and gonna be a decrease potentially this year now that EV credit is expired

Excellent-Range7433 2025-11-27 06:13

No doubt. Beginning of the end for Musk at Tesla. The car company would do so so so much better without a PO S Musk and his hand picked loser board members. Musk forcing the build out of the “Cyber Truck” should have gotten his sorry ass tossed out with the trash. Why is the stock up, why is Musk still taken seriously by Wall Street. ??? Greed, F O M O.
