NHTSA is only investigating the June 22 issues with Robotaxi because someone videoed them and others talked about it. You can bet Tesla didn't report the lane violations, and they are likely under no need to report them; after all there was no crash.
But NHTSA is concerned about bad driving as well. So perhaps they need to investigate by taking some trips on Robotaxi, following them, or mandating a report for every violation of traffic laws.

Ironically, the "give invitations to our online influencer base" play is backfiring... because those influencers make money by the click or minute-viewed, and so they need to create TONS of video content.
They are posting EVERYTHING. No amount of positive narration makes traffic violations into non-traffic violations.

Those issues were there a year ago when they gave me a month of free FSD. If I let it do it's thing in my neighborhood it would have killed someone or their dog. My roads are 15, not 45, and we have 5mph bumps it can't see. Took all of 20ft for my test drive to laugh at how bad things were back then.
IcyHowl4540
2025-06-24 22:57
I took a single turn out of a Tesla dealership, activated FSD, and was like "OH DEFINITELY NOT" and took control after maybe 2 stop lights.
It... cannot... reliably... *see.* The visualization on the center console shows you what it is seeing, and it was missing vehicles and lane lines all over the place.
If I wanted to drive that badly, I would shotgun a bottle of wine and then drive myself.

If a Robotaxi commits an illegal manoeuvre that would normally result in a person getting a ticket - who is getting the fine now? Tesla? Elon? The safety driver? The rider? Do they have demerit points in Texas? How many can Robotaxi accumulate before its licence is suspended? I guess this is true for Waymo too. I’m genuinely curious.

I’m hoping Tesla is financially insolvent and gone into receivership at that point, with Elon (forcefully) being sent back to South Africa for breaking immigration laws as a student, and then again lying about it when he became a citizen. Maybe that’s why he’s changed his tune- Old Orangehole may have threatened to revoke his citizenship.

>"Many times, when the driver went past the crash location in the left lane, the Tesla would steer left toward the gore point area and he would have to manually take control to stay within the left lane," the NTSB documents stated.
>"The family explained that it happened so often that he had told both his brother and his wife about the problem," it added.

Real question: if a cop catch a robotaxi speeding, who pays the fine?
IcyHowl4540
2025-06-25 06:50
Tesla! There's a safety operator in the vehicle, so it's not even too hard.
Watching Waymos get fined is sort of funny by comparison.
NinjaN-SWE
2025-06-25 06:59
Sure, but Waymo has been dancing their ass off for years. That they have more sensors to do it doesn't make it less impressive. I've heard so many people say "oh but you can buy the same Model Y and it will be able to robotaxi, you can't buy a Waymo car"
But like really? Even if Tesla makes FSD actually work on their current Model Y, Juniper (which is a humongous IF). It's not like they couldn't sell the Waymo car. It's obviously street legal, and it can be manually driven. What exactly is impressive in that? If anything it's a huge gamble because if they learn that they need Z new hardware to shore up a limitation/problem this test uncovers then no current Tesla will ever get real FSD without a retrofit, and that is assuming it could be retrofit.

Yup, the best part was afterwards then the Tesla didn’t move even though there was space for it and it looks like the “ chaperone” had to contact support to get the vehicle to get moving again.
Roadgoddess
2025-06-25 07:18
Well, in my understanding is they use totally different types of sensors which is why Waymos successfully stop and don’t run into things whereas FSD doesn’t always make the correct decisions and runs into an object objects.
I think a lot of these Tesla nuts are super excited because they think that they’re going to be able to rent their Teslas out as taxis in between when there’s no way they’ll ever be deemed safe enough

I'd suspect that with Trump's short attention span he's already mostly forgotten about Musk and is focused on simultaneously destroying Iran and pursuing a Nobel Peace Prize for not going to war with Iran. Musk had ample time to install his flavor of lackeys in various positions that will feign allegiance to Trump and simply further Musk's goals.
