Tesla Robotaxi Freaks Out and Drives into Oncoming Traffic on First Day

IcyHowl4540 | 2025-06-23 20:47 | 1349 views

There are only 10 Robotaxis on Austin TX streets right now. This is a 22 minute video from one of them, and it is *nerve-wracking to watch.*

Is this legit?

fastLT1 2025-06-23 21:05

Damn, thats really bad. Tesla has been testing FSD on public roads for over a decade and this is what they have to show?

IcyHowl4540 2025-06-23 21:05

I mean, the video is posted by Robert Maurer, who is a notable Tesla influencer (operates Tesla Daily with \~250,000 subscribers). It looks legit to me? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_s-h0YXtF0c&t=430s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s-h0YXtF0c&t=430s)

IcyHowl4540 2025-06-23 21:06

... In broad daylight. Without rain. So this is best case scenario.

spanishgav 2025-06-23 21:11

Stock still went up….

fastLT1 2025-06-23 21:12

Of course it did. Just like it does whenever elmo says FSD is right around the corner.

Common-Ad6470 2025-06-23 21:17

The taxi gained self-awareness, suddenly realised that its ‘father’ was a Nazi so decided to do the right thing and end it all…😳

ShotBandicoot7 2025-06-23 21:18

Thanks… bug fixing under high pressure going pn probably lol.

boofles1 2025-06-23 21:19

It looks like a remote driver took over too.

dezastrologu 2025-06-23 21:22

this is what happens when you’re cheap as fuck and only rely on cameras the car literally drives itself by looking at photos of the road

dezastrologu 2025-06-23 21:23

no, it would more likely be the substandard tech like lack of lidar

ShotBandicoot7 2025-06-23 21:26

Do we know how baidu or other further advanced players are doing it? Do they manage without lidar?

Quercus_ 2025-06-23 21:28

There's also another video out that shows the Tesla stopping in the middle of an active intersection, in the middle of a lane, in front of stopped cross traffic, to drop the passenger off. And then staying stopped in the intersection, long enough for the passenger to walk to the corner, have a conversation with a friend, walk down the sidewalk a little, pull his phone out to check and see if there's something on his end that is causing the car to sit there in the middle of the intersection, and then have more conversation, before the car finally pulls out of the active intersection. And of course the Tesla fan boys are saying that behavior is perfectly okay.

IcyHowl4540 2025-06-23 21:28

This is a rare instance where it SHOULD be able to do the job safely with its limited sensors. It just... fails to? It's not like the double yellow lines are invisible. The car just fails to interpret which side of the lines it needs to be on.

ELB2001 2025-06-23 21:30

Dude, next year they will release it /s

IcyHowl4540 2025-06-23 21:31

* Waymo: LiDAR. * Baidu: IDK how advanced, but LiDAR. * Uber: LiDAR, IR, and laser rangefinding (STILL caused a fatality, even with a human safety monitor, so they scuppered it)

StinkPickle4000 2025-06-23 21:33

Stock up 10%

Crumbbsss 2025-06-23 21:33

Crickets from tesla fan boys. Oh its just a minorrrr mistake ah no that would fail anyone on a driver's test!

ShotBandicoot7 2025-06-23 21:33

Ok thanks! Baidu seems to be quite advanced, planning to roll out in Malaysa and Singapore.

Nfuzzy 2025-06-23 21:39

Don't worry guys, the stock is up bigly today.

WillingMightyFaber 2025-06-23 21:40

And TSLA is up 10% lol, sounds about right

Status_Ad_4405 2025-06-23 21:44

I guess the Indian remote driver isn't a very good driver

MattGdr 2025-06-23 21:45

And in a limited, well-defined area, no less.

ShotNixon 2025-06-23 21:45

So the babysitter in the passenger seat just has to sit there and pretend that shit is normal?

[deleted] 2025-06-23 21:50

You couldn’t pay me enough to sit in that thing

secretlyjudging 2025-06-23 21:57

Someone start selling “Electronic Student Driver-stay away 100 feet or more”. Bumper stickers

HardOyler 2025-06-23 21:57

What a fucking joke these things are.

North-Outside-5815 2025-06-23 22:01

So it’s not even the limitations of the cameras. Their software just sucks.

Empirical_Approach 2025-06-23 22:01

It's the sensor suite. No amount of data collection or algorithm development can overcome bad or incomplete sensor data. I'm just amazed at how optimistic these retail investors are with a 10% stock pop.

[deleted] 2025-06-23 22:05

Who's propping up the stock? There can't be that many fanboys, can there be?

StellarJayZ 2025-06-23 22:07

Tesla Influencer is a thing. I hate this time line.

Schmich 2025-06-23 22:38

The guy in the front seat started that morning as a 35 year old man.

[deleted] 2025-06-23 22:39

How long have they been operational now, and there's already footage like this?

IcyHowl4540 2025-06-23 22:42

There's only about a dozen vehicles, too. So the fuckup-per-vehicle-hour rate is just astronomical.

xMagnis 2025-06-23 22:50

And sadly the fans are mostly saying this is "normal human behaviour" to swerve and drive in the oncoming lane for half a block, which goes a long way to explain why many people claim to have intervention-free drives on FSD; they just don't see this as dangerous, and fail to correct FSD, even as other drivers are honking. Also if they themselves drive like that, then it might explain why FSD also drives badly since it has been AI trained on that kind of bad driving.

banditcleaner2 2025-06-23 22:53

Stock is up because they avoided issues. Duh!

FlipZip69 2025-06-23 22:54

If there were a 1000 cars out and this happened once, I would say ok not great but should improve. They have a total of 10 cars. One stop in the middle of an intersection and lets the passengers out then just stays there for about 2 minutes. Then this mess. More so, the videos are from Tesla fans only. No one else allowed to use it. I bet we are seeing 1 in 50.

pootwothreefour 2025-06-23 22:55

Signals turns and doesn't turn, parks in prohibited areas, drives the wrong way into traffic. Cool, so normal taxi driving.

Squonkster 2025-06-23 22:57

“What year is it?”

Select_Asparagus3451 2025-06-23 22:59

KaleLate4894 2025-06-23 23:09

There was a driver there all along.

CommonSensei8 2025-06-23 23:14

Maximum-Objective-39 2025-06-23 23:18

Elon - "Our FSD is so advanced that it has emergent ethical frameworks!" \- Stock up 5%!-

Ill-Experience-2132 2025-06-23 23:24

Got a link? I'm searching but haven't found this one yet

Maximum-Objective-39 2025-06-23 23:26

IIRC - Tesla's self driving has an estimated required drive intervention once every 380 miles. On one hand, that's kinda superficially impressive when you consider that 20 years ago it was a challenge to get an autonomous vehicle to lap a test track. But in terms of human driving . . . It's bad . . . It's real bad. If you have a moderately long commute, that's a potential incident every week.

fasteddie7 2025-06-23 23:27

It’s just not worth explaining to people who have opinions on something they have never used. Waymo, with all its other sensors, has done something like this a dozen times. I have extensively experienced both and they both offer excellent experiences.

beren12 2025-06-23 23:27

It’s both

beren12 2025-06-23 23:28

Just search around between yesterday and today

beren12 2025-06-23 23:29

beren12 2025-06-23 23:30

The simps will line up

fasteddie7 2025-06-23 23:31

Waymo has lidar and has done something like this a dozen times. What, in your experience with FSD leads you to the conclusion that the tech is substandard. What has happened while you used it.

DareDareCaro 2025-06-23 23:32

\+10% in the market. Crazy.

FlipZip69 2025-06-23 23:33

Well if you think of taxi that can put on 1000 miles a day, that is potentially 3 times a day it does something that is a bit sketchy. And yes that number is or was correct within the last year. And this is based on driving in pretty good conditions.

Quercus_ 2025-06-23 23:33

It's about five threads back in this group, "Robotaxi pulls into intersection.. "

Cameras must have been dirty, you cannot get me in one of those cars there are death traps.

KiwiFormal5282 2025-06-23 23:41

Are the robotaxis out today, or only Sunday when roads are quiet?

m0nk_3y_gw 2025-06-23 23:45

Not a sensor issue - basic logic issue. The map in the upper right corner of the screens shows the car wants to turn left further up. In the meantime, the car got into a left-turn-only lane an intersection too early, and then wobbled while it figured it out. Having radar and lidar and 200 cameras wouldn't have made a difference here.

m0nk_3y_gw 2025-06-23 23:47

> The car just fails to interpret which side of the lines it needs to be on. The screens shows (upper right) that the car wants to turn left further up. The fail was that it got in a left-turn-only lane an intersection too early, and then failed to commit to mistake and drove on the wrong side of the road to get to the intersection it meant to turn left at.

Select_Asparagus3451 2025-06-23 23:50

It’s always the poor and working class who end up suffering at their hands.

[deleted] 2025-06-23 23:51

Did the indian operator get a stroke?

Big_footed_hobbit 2025-06-23 23:53

My vacuum robot has a LiDAR and won’t just crash 🤣

m0nk_3y_gw 2025-06-23 23:53

that's just what the car does on it's own (when it discovers it was in a left-turn-only lane when the map shows it wants to turn left at the next intersection) there are no remote 'drivers' - like Waymo there are remote operators that can issue terminal commands when the car is fully stuck and not logicing it's way out. (i have seen that (outside of Austin) when cops close a road, and it maps a long detour path, then changes it mind a few blocks later and comes back to the cop-closed road, in an "infinite loop" until the human driver gives up and drives the full detour themselves). edit: the screen shows the car is remapping it's path ~8-10 times, wobbling between turning left and going straight. If there was oncoming traffic it probably would have turned left and regenerated a route, but since the path was clear it stuck to the original route. Wonder if Austin cops do moving violation tickets on video evidence.

r2002 2025-06-24 00:05

That was day 1. And it was a half day.

jregovic 2025-06-24 00:14

Bullish!

boofles1 2025-06-24 00:27

They do have remote drivers in the command centre, they take over if there's an issue.

demonicbullet 2025-06-24 01:23

My issue is it doesn't even seem the cameras it does have helped too much, it definitely cut someone right the fuck off behind them based on how close and quick that horn was. Yes everyone is supposed to be watching the road and ready to stop, if you randomly jump out of the left turn lane with the left turn signal still on and veer directly infront of someone in the middle of the intersection I really wouldn't blame them for not even hitting the brakes being too awestruck by the sheer dumb fuckery they just witnessed. I've witnessed some dumb shit at stop lights, that was fucking atrocious. ETA: also when the does the observer use the stop button? Before or after a major accident? Cuz I think that was an amazing time for it to be implemented, yk before the Tesla dove into the lane to it's right in the middle of the intersection with its left turn signal on...

demonicbullet 2025-06-24 01:27

"normal human behavior" maybe once every couple years and you feel like a complete fucking dumbass after and probably don't go driving for a few days.... If this is normal driving to someone they need to retake their driver's test, written and practical....

demonicbullet 2025-06-24 01:33

I dunno if I've ever seen a taxi driver do what this Tesla just did, it I have I would probably report them to the local taxi licensing branch cuz what the actual fuck was that... Sketchy is one thing, sketchy happens often enough on the road I am okay with it the vehicle needing human intervention every 300 miles? Seems like the vehicle isn't ready yet, if you needed professional driver intervention every 300 miles you don't get your driver's license generally speaking.....

[deleted] 2025-06-24 01:48

FSD is only a year away, just like last year.

spicybright 2025-06-24 01:56

saro13 2025-06-24 01:57

That’s 24 hours of 41 mph driving, I don’t think it’s 1000 miles

spicybright 2025-06-24 02:00

I agree, I genuinely think it's possible to have a fleet of camera only taxis operate well if they're only deployed on the roads in good weather conditions and have them perform well. What happened here was inexcusable. I don't even understand how they could be that incompetent, google maps shows me all the turn lanes and which one to use every time lol

spicybright 2025-06-24 02:01

I mean it's normal human behavior if you're drunk. So I guess they got that level of control down lol

No_Neck5935 2025-06-24 03:40

Many have already died

a_lovelylight 2025-06-24 03:45

It will not stop until somebody sufficiently important dies (or someone close to them does). Someone super famous, or rich, or a big-time politician. It'd be best if it was a big-time politician with lots of connections, each of whom have a petty streak a mile long and lots of connections of their own. Alternately, it will not stop until a sufficient amount of people die that the government is forced to take notice. This will take decades unless it's a huge disaster than takes out thousands at the least. Better if we're going into the five digits and above. High five digits and above would be the most effective because at that number even an elephant is going to notice all those ants. Grim, but that's what we're working with here.

Select_Asparagus3451 2025-06-24 03:56

It’s so so sad

tjtj4444 2025-06-24 05:20

Not really a sensor issue, but other companies always include high definition maps as part of their system solution for L4/L5. And that would've helped. So still an issue because Tesla refuses to do it in a correct and controlled way.

NotAHost 2025-06-24 06:14

Yeah I was curious if they were running for more than one day, couldn’t find info. Really curious if there is any data on number of interventions.

FlipZip69 2025-06-24 06:16

You are right. I was thinking of highway driving of which it would not be doing much at all. 24 hour quite possibly though if it is automated. But lets say it does 300 miles a day. That is potentially something sketchy every 2 days.

smirnoff76 2025-06-24 07:36

Wait till they start giving remote drivers 2 or 3 cars to look after, they're that stupid it would surprise me if they thought they could get away with that

MayContainRawNuts 2025-06-24 07:43

The guy is a Tesla fan boy of note. Almost all his active communities areTesla, and even his posts are "got the new fsd update, its amazing only hit a kerb twice", "new update is great, still has issues in the mist" "new update is almost perfect just this minor issue remains"

[deleted] 2025-06-24 07:46

They moved the goalposts to the point where success is: "at least it didn't kill anyone in the first 24 hours."

ObviousReporter464 2025-06-24 07:49

FSD is going to be a huge joke. Watch what happens to Tesla stock after the first serious crash.

Kind-Huckleberry6767 2025-06-24 08:03

Turning left, the wheel turns in anticipation of turning left. That's a human bad habit. It's safer to keep the wheels straight until it's time to turn. The reason it's safer is if there's a rear collision, the car will move into the path the wheels are turned to.

ELB2001 2025-06-24 10:31

Definitely not next year.

emeraldamomo 2025-06-24 10:42

Human drivers do that stupid shit all the time. But human drivers can see eachother and humans are pretty good at figuring out what the other person wants to do- that's evolution at work. How the hell do you read a computer?

Infoaddict2012 2025-06-24 11:06

Just like how the Tesla subreddit is an echo chamber of idiots. This subreddit is turning into the same. Take a look at Waymo fail videos. These things happen and are part of the inexact world that we live in and the unpredictability of human interaction. The lines on the road are a guide for movement and should be followed, but there are circumstances when they can be crossed. For example, if someone is blocking the road to make a left turn, I will take the shoulder to get ahead. Same principles apply!

SaltyPressure7583 2025-06-24 11:24

I had a m3 back in 2020 and i was forbidden from using fsd by my gf as it tried to kill us all the time

> Waymo has lidar and has done something like this a dozen times. Source? Even if it's true, which I doubt, compare the number of rides. As of March 2025, Waymo was giving 200,000 rides a *day*, and over 10 million total. A dozen times is nothing over millions of rides. AFA we know, RoboTaxi did ~115 rides the first day (or at least so it was reported). Two significant problems over 115 rides is terrible.

[deleted] 2025-06-24 13:06

bikesnotbombs 2025-06-24 13:13

was last year 2016?

bikesnotbombs 2025-06-24 13:23

i get that waymos fail too.. i think the issue is more that, with only 10 cars, on day 1, we're seeing multiple dangerous issues.. this is in perfect conditions as well (when we know the cameras have demonstrated issues in mist/fog/direct sun), while also intentionally avoiding 'difficult' intersections. Basically everything was stacked up for a 'flawless' launch and it still doesnt look anywhere close to being ready for primetime, let alone scaled up in a way that will crush the competition

Aware-Bake-2485 2025-06-24 14:37

Everyone flipping put and it drives better than you

AWildLeftistAppeared 2025-06-24 14:56

> In the meantime, the car got into a left-turn-only lane an intersection too early… Having radar and lidar and 200 cameras wouldn’t have made a difference here. In other words, the vehicle was not where it thought it was. Something that additional sensors, particularly LiDAR would help immensely with. Objects like the curb, lampposts, road signs, trees, buildings, etc. are all important cues that a far more reliably detected using LiDAR. Additional cameras help too.

echelon123 2025-06-25 02:16

I've always assumed the "my FSD works perfectly, no interventions for weeks" crowd are TSLA stock owners trying to shill their investment.

injuredcold 2025-06-25 02:18

So, I'm seeing Robotaxi is awesome on X, but Reddit says it's a mess. What do we even believe anymore?

IcyHowl4540 2025-06-25 02:25

The algorithm on X is heavily skewed by Elon Musk's follow list. That's why you see him curating who he follows, the back end technology hypershares whoever he personally anoints as a trendsetter on X. It tends to be far right wing political figures and Tesla corporate superfans and investors. So your X feed will algorithmically show off the accounts that the owner of the platform favors. X is unique that way, it is a personal fiefdom more than, say, Facebook. I wouldn't trust X as a source of information for anything that Elon Musk would like to change your opinion about. Sorry, we live in an awful future. It's only fair that we all know how it works, though.

injuredcold 2025-06-25 02:44

So, would the same be applicable for Reddit also? The algorithm engineered to feed you what you want to see?

IcyHowl4540 2025-06-25 03:00

Vice versa. Most social media platforms show you what YOU want to see. Then, they try to extrapolate what other stuff that people who like what you like also like. Not a perfect system by any means, but different. Those platforms don't have an ideological end goal for you, they just want you to spend seconds on their apps, to gain more ad revenue from you. Twitter shows you what Elon Musk wants you to see. That's an ever-rightward moving target of political content, sprinkled with stock-pumping stuff for his brands. There is both an ideological end goal, as well as a hidden financial goal *in addition* to serving you ads. Don't take my word for it, though. Read up on the X algorithm, you can get a feel for *why* Elon Musk changed it: [https://www.businessinsider.com/musk-changed-twitter-algorithm-tweets-didnt-get-attention-book-2024-2](https://www.businessinsider.com/musk-changed-twitter-algorithm-tweets-didnt-get-attention-book-2024-2)

Gosh, I read this headline and was really worried someone got hurt, but I can't see the car driving into anything or any oncoming traffic. I don't really use reddit, but seems all the comments agree with a factually incorrect headline. - is this place a bit of a rabbit whole for the lefties?

Hi inactive-account-with-a-single-karma! Do adults actually say gosh? Or *lefties?* What a life. Blocked.

“Bit of a rabbit whole”…that seems like two opposite things. Is it a bit of a rabbit or is the rabbit whole? I need to know!

People who believe in FSD taxi stuff really don’t know much about how our brains react quickly (no one really does). Musk and followers talk about FSD, but some driving is the most complex motor work our brains do. Show me a car that can parallel park outside Gibson’s on Rush in Chicago on a Saturday night and maybe I’ll start to believe. My honest bet is that this level of “ability” is not 5 years away. It’s not 10 years away. It’s longer than that.

How much is Tesla paying the City of Austin to put these on their roads?

qgecko 2025-06-27 13:39

Aren’t they just holding a kill switch? You know, in case it goes off the rails and starts driving into oncoming traffic.

Govt NHTSA ‘called’ them about this. How about a legal injunction. It’s a major safety hazard without a doubt. Tech laggard didn’t finish its tech and now testing on public roads.

What about the Tesla owner that died because FSD drove right into the side of a white tractor trailer truck because the Tesla thought the white was a "cloud" was the excuse.
