Model S &X - Discontinued End of Q2
Elon just said S/X production ending end of Q2 to repurpose factory production for Optimus. Crazy news
Elon just said S/X production ending end of Q2 to repurpose factory production for Optimus. Crazy news
collector's item
Is this a sales technique or S/X really sell that poorly
Paid 90k for my 2016 S. Sold it before moved to Midwest before Tesla had support there. Best car I ever owned. Funny how today’s price is actually less with autopilot (FSD) included. Lots of sad things happening at Tesla. This and the whole autopilot debacle. Without s/x they really have no premium vehicles anymore. Amazing.
Not really. No one holds onto their old cell phones because they’re not supported anymore, same with these cars.
Well they are stupid expensive
Not sure about that, what happens when they stop making the electrical, software, battery components for it?
Literally everyone keeps their old cell phones.
I hope they drop in value... even used HW3s are like 60k. Way to expensive.
People need cars. Nobody needs a robot. This is pure hubris driving by market hysteria rewarding every decision everyone makes no matter how silly. People are actually struggling with prices of food, etc in the real world and the expectation is there will be a mass market for $30K home robots that have no current proof of concept. Spending on a luxury car is much more palatable considering the utility. Wild, dot com like thinking.
Both could probably go like OG Roadster. IIRC, Tesla did offer some services in OG Roadster.
Mannn, bought our 2015 model s p85d for 140k euros 11yrs ago. Time flies
Should bring back a roadster. Something with at least a targa top, even if it’s a 2+2
Yeah, 100%. There’s no market for Optimus, and if there were, several other companies produce far superior humanoid robots. He wants out of the car business.
It's a strong pivot to autonomy. Elon said he wasn't betting the entire company on it, but close to it. In that context, it makes sense. Sad to see them go, but they would be an even smaller part of the picture when autonomy starts to roll.
How much more premium is a model s from a model 3 really
Have you never ridden in one
They don’t sell many at all
yeah, I *totally* wouldn’t buy a $30k home robot… https://preview.redd.it/hy0ke2xsx6gg1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=598dd02b3f01c8adccfa4243d2bd9dc10681872a
I’m bummed… I’m tired of the autonomous talk with everything. Probably will be getting out of consumer car business but charging us $8,000+ or a subscription so they can collect all our data, just to turn around and use it for their autonomy stuff down the road. I want to drive my actual CT, not have a robot or FSD only drive. It’s kind of annoying…
They did raise them $20k last year… yes FSD included though
I have a 22 MSLR and my family have 3s and Ys. Everyone agrees my S is like a completely different car. I’ve considered getting a 3 but now that I’ve had the S for so long, every time I get in one of their cars or rent one, I’m amazed at how much different they are. I like the 3s and Ys but it’s like they’re unfinished or missing all the good things. Lol. And the “feel” of the car is completely different. I’m sad for this news, was hoping the S would get a new look or refresh soon. Guess that obviously isn’t happening. Curious what it is going to do to the market for used S and X vehicles or what maintenance will be like years from now.
Uhhhh. The 3/y sold like 406k units. The s, x, and cyber truck combined sold a sad sad 11.4k
This can start the closing of the last auto plant in california. tesla can build a new bigger modern plant somewhere. toyota and gm probably did the same thing in moving to a new place
Night and day. Ride an S and get back.
I mean BMW's 8 series sold like 4k units last year and that sure isn't making headlines
The gap isn't as significant since the Highland refresh, but the S is still their only luxury sedan offering.
The Optimus reference is likely just a way to distract from the fact that they're having to discontinue them due to slow sales.
Too niche. Look at Porsche - their EV range is struggling. Tesla needs to look at every other successful automaker and offer a variety of SUV and CUV options. That's what the market wants. They don't want sedans or coupes, they want SUVs and CUVs. And if the future of Tesla is truly robotaxis, then they should release the world's best minivan. Instead, every product other than the 3 and the Y is a dog, and there is nothing to replace the models they are discontinuing. Elon has completely mismanaged the product pipeline.
It was in the headlines. Just because you don’t pay attention doesn’t mean it wasn’t. BMW is killing off its 8 series, x4 and Z4 lines.
This has to be one of the dumbest Ideas I've seen from Tesla as of lately. Model S and X are EVERYWHERE in my area. You cant drive a few miles without seeing several. Theres prob 15 or more on my street... I bet none of those people will downgrade their S/X to a Model Y/3, but many of them will begin to look elsewhere at other brands like Lucid now.
Even the 3 and the Y aren't fit for full autonomy. If robotaxis are the company's future, they need a minivan that only has sliding doors. An autonomous Model 3 and Model Y would be crippled by a passenger simply failing to close their door after a ride. Not to mention the fact that they can't safely drive themselves on snow covered roads.
Did you ever have any issues with it? My coworkers 2019 MSLR ended up going in and out of the shop for a while until my boss said enough and took a $10,000 loss selling it.
Considerably more premium in every way.
Just a normal, Highlander hybrid style SUV would clean up
I do not have CT outlasting model x on my bingo card
Sure but the S/X weren’t catered towards people who struggle financially. Should’ve axed the fucking Cybertruck instead though.
Actually, I’m now on the hunt for a used X, maybe 2025 or 2026 in the future. I own a 2023 X, and I can’t imagine going with anything but an X in the future. The X is amazing, and with this new announcement, will likely end up being a classic.
2016 Model S owner still. Was considering maybe replacing with a S or more likely X in a year or two. Been so happy with the car. No interest in a 3 or Y, so guess I’m just one and done with Tesla. Will keep my 2016 forever now! 😂
Very.
(Knock on wood) I’ve had no issues. Bought it brand new and tires have been about the only thing. I did have the yolk replaced because it was the original design that started separating and tearing at the seams. Tesla came to me, replaced it, and it’s been great since, and at no cost. Overall best car I’ve ever owned. It’s been an amazing car!
So weird they announce discontinuing X and S, but not CT. CT has to be the most disliked and undersold of them all.
It did make the headlines. And your figure is US only btw.
Literally everyone? People I know trade them in or recycle them. Just like their old laptops or old microwaves. Who are these hoarders that you hang with?
I would much rather have a shitty car and a domestic robot than a premium car
I think that’s why they are producing the CyberCab with automatic doors. The latest video from Out of Spec shows that FSD actually handles snow/ice extremely well, better than most people that are inexperienced in driving in those conditions.
Have you not seen what’s going on in China?
Millennials? All my millennial friends have all their old phones in a box.
Same here. 17’ S75D solid and a stunner…Tesla and Musk are so drastically different from when I first was inspired by them; this will be the last Tesla I ever own of any variety...there are better cars for SoCal beach living anyway; many of us legacy S/X holders have included Supercharging forever, so it may make sense to just repair anything that breaks.
My family owns refreshed S, 3, and Y. Driving them are all very similar. Unfinished makes no sense.
Collection of old cell phones dating back to 1996 checking in!
numbers don't lie
when will they be stopping model S sales? what is the cutoff day?
So Model Y L is surely coming to the US, riggghtttt? 3rd row Model Y is not usable…
Until there is snow or ice blocking a camera.
Yes, I test drove a P90D in San Jose in 2019. I’ve been a passenger in a Model 3 a couple of times. My argument is that a Model S is 2x the cost of a M3 but it isn’t 2x the COGS or improved experience for that matter
Exactly. All they need to do is release an SUV without the Elon-driven gimmicks and it would clean up.

More room
thanks, do you know if the luxe package on the model S will keep full self-driving after february 14th?
2025 they sold like 50k units... Which is not a lot.
The market for $100k vehicles is pretty limited. EV Trucks are in a rough spot overall. F150 Lightning ending. R1T sold an estimated 7,400 for the entirety of 2025.
My refresh 2021 model S with 30k miles is worth $35. I think its the best deal you can get on a used car
Totally agree on all points
Ive has zero issued with my MSLR either
This is the way
Tesla is goong down like a stone in the sea.
No expensive car is 2-5x better than the other cars offered by the same manufacturer. Is a Toyota Landcruiser 2x better than a Rav4? No. Is a Mercedes S class 3x better than a Mercedes CLA? No. That's just how luxury goods work. The Model S is affordable enough that paying 2x for it over the Model 3 for a probably 25% improved experience is worth it to me. But Tesla probably doesn't want to play in that realm anymore cause expensive cars don't sell unless they're trucks or performance cars.
You’re right, that’s crazy.

Humans also cant drive if snow/ice is covering their windshield.
How about change the body shape a bit. Model S is still more or less the same physical package from 2012. It’s like they wanted it to die.
Lucid should be very pleased to hear this.
Companies and businesses might need robots. And they are much more willing to pay.
There’s only one vehicle they need to make instead of all of this SXCT crap. Another EV manufacturer is sort of making it, but not the right proportions and w/o the Tesla special sauce. Hopefully that’s what they’re _actually_ working on, in addition to the robot stuff.
Why? You could have saved so much money over the years selling your old phone when you get a new one.
The S/X are being canceled because they aren't selling well. The bit about repurposing the factory for the Optimus is just an attempt to put a positive spin on things. It's not the driver for what's happening.
Seems like your area isn't representative of the world at large given the S/X/Cybertruck combined for less than 3% of Tesla's sales last quarter.
Because I like to go back through them every few years and see where I was in life at that time through texts, calls etc.. Plus I buy my phones outright. It's a fun hobby, my guy.
Your area isn’t the rest off the world. It’s a low volume car
I see a lot of companies developing humanoid robots, with no actual market or application, sure.
X & S platform dates back to 2012. Would be time for a new platform if they weren't going to discontinue it. Cybertruck is really new, and pushing the boundaries forward (steer by wire etc). No need for major R&D spend to keep this current. Only issue is that sales are massively less than forecast (but still well outselling the S & X)
My head touches the ceiling in the back seats... (granted it was an old model S, so may have improved.)
Roll down the window and lean out hahah done it many times in Canada I don’t know
haha true!
Tesla needs to make a mini van to compete with Toyota sienna, Honda odyssey or Kia carnival and a real suv similar to the Toyota Highlander, Cadillac Escalade etc with luxury massage seats and other luxury perks
I have a 2017 MS and I am 6’4” and my head doesn’t touch the ceiling, and i am not even using the lowest position. You must have a tall torso
Makes 0 fucking sense to me but fair enough.

I thought though the post I was responding too was referring to be back seat. Front seats are fine.
They sell poorly. And discontinuing a model isn't generally a sales technique. Generally people don't want to own something that has the obsolesce flag of discontinuation hanging over it. Some exceptions of course, like the last of the v8 diesel Landcruiser 70's and 200's. Last of the RWD Holden Commodores, Last of the Dodge Challengers etc.
Oh my bad, I didn’t read carefully your comment.
It’s just not a good looking car in my opinion. If I wanted an electric truck I’d get a Rivian.
So what’s left to buy new? Only the Cybertruck? Or did that stop production too, earlier?

Interesting what about the R1S tho
BMW (ix3 2026) and mercedes (2026 cla sedans) are killing it with their 800 volt fast charging, 500 miles range suv's, Chinese market has its own taste for luxury sedans and Suvs, no place for tesla model x or s there either. Actually a smart decision.
Air suspension.. sound dampening, noise cancelation, thicker frame for stiffer ride, Alcantara interior, and thats just the start.
So, options for high-end / Luxury EVs in US are now: Lucid Air/Gravity, Rivian R1S, Volvo EX90, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche ... we'll be fine without the S and X.
I don't think so. It seems legitimately necessary to free up space for Optimus production. Even at 50k units a year, the S/X are probably still profitable given their price points.
Let's revisit this comment in a year...
Same same. 17 S75D in white, great car. And yea, what inspired me at first has completely gone to shit. I actually wanted a new one when time came, but onto a different EV
Supposedly all S, X, c truck account for 3% of sales
Gladly lol
I just buy an old phone for $10 on ebay and trade it in.
I edited that comment. previously didn't mention the back seat.
140k euro? The most expensive P85+ in my country was ~95k euro in 2013 currency. 85k euro for a P85D in 2015.
https://preview.redd.it/d5j3kx7b4ngg1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bbff7e35a25c31584d74c7ea487683ed5b5c04e We imported the car from netherlands to Turkey. It was 103k+tax (3% special consumption tax + 18%vat)+transportation,comission etc.
Not too bad then, tbh. In my country EVs were tax exempt, so 0 euro went to the state.
For the top 5% of earners…a home chore robot will probably sell.
Full time maids seem way cheaper. There’s still probably a lot of expensive maintenance for these robots so it’s not a buy once investment.
And a lawn service company is cheaper than a robot mower. Didn’t stop me from buying one. Maybe I just like robots.
What’s concerning is that Musk said that they are dropping two halo cars for a product (nobody wants) that’s in R&D. It’s amazing what he’s done to the brand.
