Definitely not a car company!

mflboys 2026-01-28 23:27

Honestly not surprising to me at all. As a Highland owner who's spent plenty of time in a low mileage S, the value proposition of the S just isn't there at all. The Highlands/Junipers are so nice that I couldn't imagine spending OVER TWICE the money on an S. Sure they were necessary at the start, but they just don't fit into the lineup anymore.

Paythapiper 2026-01-29 00:04

What was the point of the mini refresh a few months ago?

AwkwardlyPositioned 2026-01-29 00:05

Amazed it took this long. Everyone seems to be in 3s, Ys, and old Ss. I don’t think I've seen a single X or S refresh.

DreadPirateNot 2026-01-29 01:49

I understand it’s not for everyone. And I won’t pay for a brand new Tesla. But the model S makes so much more sense for me. I could make it work with a model Y, but the design of that car is just not my style. I’ll hang onto the used model S as long as they continue to support it. But I don’t know what I’ll get once that’s up. We’ll see

Robert_who 2026-01-29 05:38

I think they messed up by making the 3 and Y so good that there’s little people buying the S and X

madmanx33 2026-01-29 06:48

What a shame S is a super nice car just overpriced

JohnLemonBot 2026-01-29 08:01

That's great, they just have two nearly identical models for sale now, and the cyberfuck

1dayday 2026-01-29 09:58

3 is too small of a car for me so S is better. Plus the interior isnt even comparable. I get that they want to keep 3 and Y for the masses but to say 3 has better value id have to agree to disagree.

forzion_no_mouse 2026-01-29 13:03

maybe we will get a model 3/y plaid now...

forzion_no_mouse 2026-01-29 13:03

because they were delayed on the refresh, I don't think the x ever did get a full refresh. looks almost the same.

forzion_no_mouse 2026-01-29 13:04

if they canceled the s they will cancel the cyber truck soon.

waddee 2026-01-29 16:20

Same, I love my S, not sure I would be ok with either of the other options unless they start offering a premium version

Stephancevallos905 2026-01-29 17:54

We need to get air suspension on 3/Y

Zapador 2026-01-29 19:38

What exactly would you miss if you had to go to a Model 3 instead? Genuinely curious here. Or phrased in another way, what would they have to add to or change on the Model 3 for that to be appealing to you?

Many_Salamander3754 2026-01-29 19:46

buy a car from a car compamy. elon os obviously losing interest in cars. i had three teslas. selling my last two at the moment.

ddr2sodimm 2026-01-30 07:52

….. to not do a major one.

skotywa 2026-01-30 12:20

I remember in an earnings call several years ago that Elon referred to the S and the X as only being kept in production for nostalgia reasons. His point was that the future of the company was the 3 and the recently ramped Y. He wasn't wrong. To some extent, I'm surprised they lasted this long. Hopefully now we'll get some more colors for the 3 and Y.

whitemiketyson 2026-01-30 17:14

Size, comfort and hatchback would be my big 3.

SurprisedBottle 2026-01-30 17:38

Pretty much so, when I heard that the suspension felt better on the refreshed 3 and Y vs the S and X, it struck me as a why? Then they released the YL and from there I knew it was a matter of time before the X will stop production. The S caught me by surprise however.

Zapador 2026-01-30 17:45

That makes sense. While the Model 3 offer quite a lot of storage space overall, it is limited by the width and height at the opening, because it isn't a hatchback. I personally like the size of the Model 3 better, but that's really down to individual preference. Some people like a big car, some don't.

Terrible_Tutor 2026-01-30 21:57

Best we can do is… **checks notes** Removing all suspension because the data says people don’t use it - Tesla probably

Nyungwe23 2026-01-31 00:13

Hopefully they will create a premium 3/Y with air suspension, additional drivers screen and a heads up display etc.

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-01-31 00:31

Might have something to do with Tesla increasing the entry level price of the X by $25k over the past 3 years, without significant updates. Also. They were still selling X. Your anecdotal observation doesn’t mean much. I see X every day around here and several brand new ones.

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-01-31 00:32

They will drop the 3 soon enough.

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-01-31 00:32

So you want them to create a Model X. Got it.

AwkwardlyPositioned 2026-01-31 00:36

They obviously aren't bought here.  I see one every few months.  That said I'm sure you see 10× as many Ys as you do Xs.

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-01-31 00:38

I see more of a car that is less than half the price and has received frequent attention? Shocking. But it’s not as big of a gap as you seem to think. All comes down to where you live and socioeconomics. People who have the money prefer the S and X. Hence why there’s a lot of them here.

Fileboy27 2026-01-31 01:17

Hahaha 😂 it’s funny because it’s true!

gre-0021 2026-01-31 03:09

A premium EV touring sedan absolutely fits into their lineup, what? Way more cargo space than a model 3, way more range, much nicer interior, much faster than even a performance 3, actually trackable with the ceramic brakes in the track package and carbon-sleeved motor in the plaid, and a bunch of other little stuff like the cluster display. And the 3 and Y are absolutely nothing like the X so there’s really no reason for that to go away other than the expensive, prone-to-issues falcon wing doors. If they get rid of the S and X, Tesla becomes basically a budget to mid-range EV company that makes an expensive truck.

gre-0021 2026-01-31 03:10

So basically turn it into a touring sedan…which is what the S is

gre-0021 2026-01-31 03:11

Eventually the adaptive dampeners from the 3 performance may trickle down to the premium 3&Y. Not as good as air suspension, but also not as expensive or as prone to failure.

gre-0021 2026-01-31 03:12

Could be that they’re twice as much as the California Camry you see everyone else in. I’ve only seen a handful of cyber trucks but it was still the best selling 6 digit truck in 2025

gre-0021 2026-01-31 03:14

The 3 and Y are nearly identical to you? You might wanna see an eye doctor my guy. I could give you some leeway if they were at least the same type of car (sedan, hatchback, suv, etc.) but they’re not even that.

skotywa 2026-01-31 13:19

I've seen lots of people saying this. Not sure what this opinion is based on. I don't think they'll cut the model 3 unless they have another sedan offering.

AwkwardlyPositioned 2026-01-31 15:46

It doesn't change that they're less than 5% of overall sales though which was the point. Based on statistics the average 3 and Y buyers not that far in the distant past were roughly the same income as S and X buyers and both were in low 6 figure averages.

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-01-31 16:16

You’re missing the point. Cause and effect of why they were 5% of sales. It’s not because they are bad or undesirable cars. Tesla mismanaged them as products.

AwkwardlyPositioned 2026-01-31 17:42

No point was missed by me.  I didn't say it wasn't mismanaged.  I don't think they're bad cars.  My wife loves the X, but for us as a value proposition I bought two Ys instead.  I'm sure many weighed their options based on cost outside of not being able to afford it.  Tesla is repurposing the factory regardless and that alone might have been their biggest deciding factor over sales numbers.

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-01-31 17:54

Smoke and mirrors man. Fremont has excess capacity. Nevermind in combination with Texas and the Gigafactory. Texas is underutilized as they anticipated producing 250k cybertrucks a year and they only need 25k. More likely Optimus is never made in Fremont and they instead close that plant down

IolausTelcontar 2026-01-31 21:01

400 miles on a charge.

Zapador 2026-01-31 23:37

You can't get 400 miles even on the 100D though? Well maybe if you go from literally 100 to 0% and drive very slow. Or did they at some point make one with a larger battery than that? I've only ever seen up to 100 kWh.

cbdoc 2026-02-01 02:38

There’s absolutely demand for a luxury EV with FSD and they could charge $100K+. They should (and still believe they will) done a major refresh and luxury upgrade on S/X.

feinburgrl 2026-02-03 01:53

Agree. Why would you spend over $80k on a design that has been around for over 8 years. If I had that much money to spend then I would go for BMW EV or Rivian.

No_Cattle_4552 2026-02-06 18:23

The X is in a different class of vehicle so I don’t think the YL would be a replacement. Y AND YL are much less luxurious

Bright_Mix_3449 2026-02-14 00:37

Lots of model X where I live. Dime a dozen even

AwkwardlyPositioned 2026-02-14 15:17

I see about one X a month if that. 3s and Ys are somewhat common here. I see one Cybertruck almost daily, but I know the person that owns it. I live in a small town. I'd say roughly 25% of the Teslas on the road here are older Model S. Even Tesla's numbers show the X hasn't sold well and I live in an area even less likely to buy them. That's all.
