The V4 chargers are a godsend for the R1T. Pulled into the North Bend one, and there was 5 vehicles 4 all non Tesla front end in but not making it awkward.
In theory it would have been good to have done that a decade ago. Unfortunately such a proposal now would result in five years of consultation groups, research and meetings first. It never happened with petrol cars, the fuelling stations were designed so it didn’t matter. That’ll happen with EVs too.

No no, we have to have half the models on one side and half on another. Charging stalls should also alternate chargers. This way, you can have idle chargers and still no way to charge. This is more fair since someday, the right car will come by to save the spot finances. Who invented this stupidity in ICE vehicles I don’t know. They could have allowed cars to drive in opposite directions through fuel stations anyway…..

Especially in Europe this is getting out of hand. Just did a tour across Europe with my MS. Due to the fact that the chargers are open for all other brands and holiday season, you end up with stalls that are not usable, as a BMW or some other car stands at the spot. A ton of Teslas pilling up and wait to get charging in the meantime. And of course, across the street is a public charger with the same KW/hs, but is not used as it is 3 cents more expensive.
Tesla knows that the real answer is longer cables, which is why they are putting those on their newer chargers.
Standardized pull through spots would solve many more issues than just port placement problems. Unless a charge point can facilitate any trailer or hitch mounted accessory just as well as a pull through service station, it’s needlessly making it difficult for normal use cases and limiting who can use a charger. The time tested configuration has existed and been proved out, why arbitrarily limit what configuration can use a charger?

Tesla built their own system way before anyone else and just picked the spot that worked best for their cars and Superchargers. Since there wasn’t any standard back then, other automakers just did their own thing too. Now with Tesla opening up their network and more brands adopting NACS

As a Rivian and Tesla owner, when we are on a road trip with the Rivian, I always take the further right stall if open and double park in a non charging spot. That way nobody is impacted by the Rivian's charging port location.
V4's are, it's just the older superchargers were only designed to charge Teslas so they minimized the cable length.

When you add your non Tesla EV to Tesla app for charging it asks you for make and model. The app should know based on this information on which side the charger port is located. This way you are allowed to charge only on a spot that doesn’t block 2 stalls , e.g. first and last stall in a row if there is an empty parking spot near the stall. The charger should not give you any power if you are trying to charge your non Tesla EV on a stall that blocks 2 chargers,

I don’t think so. Consumer choice is always nice, in this case the choice of a car with the charging port in a location that will best work for the personal garage setup. Some people might really prefer a port on the other side or the front of the car based on doors in their garage or something.
Or, you know, don’t design chargers with a single design in mind and instead design it for multiple use. All car maximum car dimensions are defined, it’s a matter of fourth grade mathematics to solve for X in a rectangle. It’s only a problem with Tesla chargers and no problem with the general ones.
They need to do something about copper thieves as well, as longer cables are a bigger target for them.

Longer cables means you either need active cable cooling (which is SUPER heavy), or lower max charge rate.

Charging stations were designed with this in mind from the get go. Tesla chargers were the only ones put out with short cables, and even shorter foresight.
This is what legacy auto gets when the corporate boards deep in bed with Big Oil only allow peanuts for EV R&D. It will take another decade befor the dinos die off, but by then Tesla, Rivian, Lucid and the plethora of China EVs will be far ahead. VAG finally realized the mistake are now installing them closer to the corners in newer models.

I personally with the vehicles would standardize. I also think Teal knew what it was doing when it designed’ back in’ charging. In 3 years I’ve never seen an accident at the chargers because everyone basically does it the same

It should be on the rear passenger/curb side. That would be safer when using street side chargers, because it would keep you out of the street. And with pull in spots backing in is safer.
What awful charging port placement
Took a road trip to NC from WNY over Memorial Day. Drove down early, it was very easy to find a spot. Drove home on Monday. Had to make 4 stops, 3 of which had VERY crowded chargers. Each one required me to pull in from the backside of the chargers. Hop the curb, drive through the grass, nose up to the one available charger. Get some funny looks, embarrasses the hell out of my wife, but gets the job done :)
The very front or back just makes it that much more susceptible to impact damage. Better to keep the sparky bits closer to the center for accident considerations.
The purpose of the Supercharger network was to solve the chicken and egg problem. They needed to build a robust, ubiquitous fast charging infrastructure so that they could sell EVs. The Tesla Superchargers are by far the most reliable charging network, and part of the reason is the short cables.

Screw Tesla changing their system to accommodate other cars. The other car manufactures need to change where their charging ports are if they want their customer to have the best charging options.

I have an ev9 and a model 3. If a company is going to advertise the nacs port and its access to the supercharger network, it need to be in the same place as Tesla has it. Or atleast on the correlating side in the front of the car. Its kind of neat, lived through the Red(hd) vs Blue(ray) colored boxes as the Sony backed format won out and everyone conformed. Now, NACS seems to be the clear winner and conformity takes time. But what excuse is there for 2026 models to not have it on the correct side? Maybe if it's a light refresh?
Except the tesla app actually tells you explicitly that you should block 2 stalls. They want you to do this.

Had they made them longer, as their competition are doing, they would’ve been accessible to more users from the beginning and solidify them as the biggest provider in the long-term, instead of designing them primarily for Tesla-vehicles. Making the cables 30-50cm longer wouldn’t really make a difference apart from cost-effectiveness and perhaps hindering some EV sales from competitors. Us europeans got along just fine without a tesla charge network monopoly, and are still doing just fine without it.

Correct. Standard charging port location is more economical with material. Aside from petulant novelty and unchecked NIH, there is no reason for manufacturers to not use either rear-left or front-right positions.

Might not be on the top of the list for Tesla. With getting rid of the EV credit and many automakers widely scaling back with rollbacks of EPA emissions standards, other things will probably need to be focused on. And like others have said, some automakers already moved their charge port on vehicles
Brother, adding a NACS port but not changing the port spot is just stupidity on the part of the automakers that can’t be justified Because that doesn’t make sense at most locations where they have to operate with limited space and have to optimize for density. Place along highways and rural areas and what not usually have trailer stalls buts urban areas demand density because real estate is expensive in the first place. Why arbitrarily put the NACS charge port in the wrong place if you know they have to use a charger infrastructure that wasn’t made for their cars? Replacing everything with a V4 stall is long shot and asking every stall to be a pull through is unreasonable
What do you mean, you doubt it’s true? I know it’s true. I’ve charged at tesla stalls before. The app tells you “you might have to park on the line” with a graphic of a car blocking two parking spaces. It also says not to park sideways (which would block more than 2 chargers).

Ok, fine. Clarification, normally I charge at night on road trips and parking lots are usually pretty empty. So even normal parking isn't impacted.
I wish Tesla would make a bonus parking space to the right of the rightmost charger, and then strongly encourage people with LeftFront/RightRear to fill the stations from right to left, and people with LeftRear or RightFront to fill from left to right.
The problem is, the Tesla cables are ONLY lightweight because they are water cooled. Without water cooling, for the amps you're up into 1000 kcmil copper and the damn thing will weigh 70 pounds and cost $1000. The problem is, there's no way to tell the station "hey bro, you've got an extension cord in the sequence that's only good for 125A". Thus the extension must be built for worst case. You could add that method, but you would have to find a way to actively power electronics on the extension, the electronics would have to PLC (Power Line Communication) which is hard, and the CCS comm protocol would have to be extended to allow that, and all stations would need to be upgraded. So again you're looking at $1000, comparable to the CHAdeMO adapters you now see.
How is it going between the Y and the Rivian? We have a 3 and a Y and need something bigger but I really don’t like the X doors. We test drove the Rivian and it just feels enormous. It’s definitely just a bigger vehicle but also being able to see the hood stick out that far and being used to not seeing the hood at all is a strange feeling. Which vehicle do you prefer? What made you go with the Rivian over an X?
Consumer choice is an illusion. The placement of the charge port would be much lower on people’s feature list than things like body style, brand, price, range, etc. Manufacturers will keep the port in the same location for a given model to avoid extra production costs, so the consumer doesn’t really have much of a choice there.
I have an Ioniq 5, I feel bad but my charging port is on the passenger side… so I usually have to take the right charger. I’m constantly apologizing and helping people avoid the spot to the right of me. I wish there were like extension cables or some left some right… open to ideas but always feel bad
So what I'm hearing is that I'll just have to be one of those folks or find a charger with longer cables, got it. Being as I've only supercharged my Tesla a handful of times, it's probably NBD. The EV truck wouldn't be used for long drives anyway, so it'd probably spend its time on a home charger.
It just takes 10X as long to 'refuel' for a 200-mile trip....

Simply do exactly as Tesla tells you to do in their published literature. Park funny and take up multiple spots. As you have probably noticed, it's rare for Superchargers to be full.
We also didn’t like the falcon wing doors and at the time they were glitchy. I don’t know if that’s still the case. The R1S felt like driving a boat for about 2 weeks but after that I got used to it. My wife is small and she still doesn’t love driving it. Tesla is probably 2 or 3 years ahead of Rivian on the software and road visualization quality but hands down the Rivian feels more premium in terms of the doors, seats, dashboard etc… The Rivian software isn’t bad, it’s just not as good as Teslas if that makes sense. I’m not loyal to any brand so if you’re not in a rush, check out Scout Motors upcoming (2027) SUV and truck.
Yeah I mean try and be considerate if possible, like if it's a fuller charger take an end one or park on the other side if doable, but don't worry about it too much. That's what Tesla decided to allow by opening up the network (or at least a large # of stations), so don't feel bad for their choices.

I was about to comment saying it's a shame someone didn't park in the bay next to them, blocking them in with their own douche parking, but then I saw your comment and realised you're right, the short cables on the V3's (V3, is that right, I always forget) meant this was a necessity for them, and they were intentionally courteous enough to not block neighbouring bays. I'm all for super chargers being open to all. I know there's been significant issues with dual bay blocking etc, but this is actually really nice to see. As things progress and SC's become more usable in design regardless of your EV, it should work as a benefit to everyone.

Of course that was their intention, but anyone with the tiniest knowledge of the world would have known once they got into the EU they were going to be essentially forced through heavy financial encouragement or actually just forced through legislation, to allow open access. And that's exactly what happened, which is why EU tesla chargers are CCS not Teslas proprietary connector, with Tesla cars are sold with CCS, and the chargers open to all. If they hadn't tried to save the few cents per charger by fitting a long enough cable in the first place, they wouldn't have looked so poorly designed to everyone today haha.
The Tesla app instructs vehicles with front left charge ports to do this.
We should probable start painted parking lines for superchargers diagonally. That would solve the issue even if it takes up an extra spot on either side

Tesla opening their superchargers up to other EVs was the worse thing to happen. Yea they make more money I suppose but it annoys the hell out of their loyal Tesla owners, customer support gets calls all the time about "x vehicle not charging or not working" and we have to tell them that's not our concern because they are not driving a Tesla, and overall they didn't allow 3rd parties to charge they could screw over the EV companies which would be a win for Tesla b/c no one else is going to invest money into charging like Tesla and it would even force companies to put the right charger on the correct side to be a better fit for Tesla chargers, if they were going to open it up to the public.

I'll have to do that when my BMW i5 with the ridiculous placement of the charge port is finally Supercharger supported. Driving the 6 hours from SF to LA - Harris Ranch is the perfect charging stop, exactly half way. The problem is there are ***98 Superchargers*** and all of ***6 EA CCS chargers.*** It sucks to wait in that CCS line while dozens of empty Superchargers laugh at you.

Here. Look at what I'm looking at. Get on desktop, fire up Incognito Mode / [Plugshare.com](http://Plugshare.com) / set filters to CCS only. Frame it Hayward in the northwest corner and LA in the southeast. I-5 does not attempt to compete with CA-99 and deliberately goes through desolation, so nothing is there except to serve travelers. Almost all I-5 travelers are going from the LA basin to SF/SJ/Sac, *too far for 1 charge so they must charge midway*. In that midway where you'd need to charge, there are like 3 exits with chargers. 6 heads at Firebaugh, 10 near Harris Ranch, 22 at Kettleman City. Ridiculous. 38 heads for 75,000 cars/day. Now look at 101, the less popular route, 20,000 cars/day. Dozens of sites, probably 100 heads. Lots of 50s that nobody wants, which can be nice if there's a sweet little bistro or museum nearby. Plus road speed is slower so you're getting better mileage and have a wider midway where you need to charge.
During off peak times, YES, ....holidays or at peak times, NO. Part of the reason I bought a tesla was the SC network and it annoys me when non teslas take 2 or even 3 spots at peak times. It's just wrong.

Have mach e GTPE and model y. In PA never had a problem in charging either at SC as most always have space.
Good point! I have only done the 101 route a few times as it adds at least another hour to the drive (I actually drive to OC passing thru LA) due to the longer path. But in some ways it's more relaxing as I hate constantly dodging the trucks and road boulders on the two-lane 5. But, I do see on the 101 route but it's similar - a bunch of stations with just a few chargers each. I'm always running into full chargers - do I wait, or try for another one? The app tells me there are 1 or 2 open chargers (out of only 4), then I get there and they're already taken. Annoying! What Harris Ranch and Kettleman City need are simply beefed up EA sites - instead of 4 chargers, can we please have 10-20? Is it that difficult, given Tesla installed **NINETY-EIGHT** freaking chargers at Harris?
More like 100. It's not like California is going to stop the EV rollout. We may not need 100 in 2025 but we'll need 'em in 2028. And hell it takes that long to provision tens of megawatts of power.
Tesla will probably swap out for longer cables over time or convert V3 to V4 which I believe have longer cables. I own a M3 and a VW ID.4. Can’t charge at Superchargers yet with VW but it’s coming soon. I would use Superchargers as a second choice with VW as the buildout of non Tesla charging is going gangbusters.
It is said for fastest charging leave a spot open as too not share power They just making sure they won’t be slowed down
