Woah I didn't have Brooklyn on my list. That's cool

[deleted] 2025-07-31 14:26

Just to be clear this is for testers, not public use.

jasoncross00 2025-07-31 14:31

Specifically, this is an ad for “vehicle operators “ to operate their…uh…self-driving vehicles.

marlinspike 2025-07-31 14:36

Right. It’s a good and reasonable requirement before the next step for monitors present with real passengers. Really good to see the progress.

TheTimeIsChow 2025-07-31 14:37

NY only permits autonomous vehicle testing with a driver in the drivers seat. These companies cannot offer rides to paying customers. In this case, they're just hiring someone for testing. The robo-taxi program isn't 'expanding'. Waymo was testing in NYC several years ago for data collection... but subsequently packed their bags and left once the law refused to change. They are attempting to break down the wall again currently.

Blackboard_Monitor 2025-07-31 14:50

And Tesla won't be able to operate there so your list is still accurate.

CureTBA 2025-07-31 15:22

Farmers branch seems so out of place on that list. I will say that driving in Farmers branch is a lot less chaotic than the rest of Dallas.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-07-31 15:25

They obviously test before offering public rides, and that requires having operators in the car.

watergoesdownhill 2025-07-31 15:30

NYC laws are so dumb

Lol yeah it does seem silly to have operators for a self driving car. I'm assuming it has to do with regulations, in that a human driver is required at this point. I don't know all the details, they may be required to pass certain tests before it's allowed to run without a human driver. and/or it's possible laws in certain areas would need to be changed before it's allowed to be fully automated. This is why waymo driverless cars are only in a very select few areas right now, and will likely be that way for a long while since their strategy relies on them heavily training their vehicles in specific locations.

jefferios 2025-07-31 15:48

With that huge Tesla Service Center on Rt 50 in Cermont, FL I'm wondering if that will be the base for testing. Pretty cool.

AJHenderson 2025-07-31 15:54

That's pretty thin for being expansion of robotaxi vs any other validation, though I suppose at this point robotaxi is just an attempt to get people to pay to ride along for their validation testing.

Electrical_Quality_6 2025-07-31 16:10

this will unlock so much human potential

meteoraln 2025-07-31 16:23

This will change when NYers start asking why don't we have the cool stuff here.

[deleted] 2025-07-31 16:30

Yeah your brain is clearly expanding

Chappie47Luna 2025-07-31 16:47

Sweet coming to Tempe, definitely will wait and let it train for a month before testing but want to compare to Waymo

hakimthumb 2025-07-31 16:50

Light bulbs allowed productivity to increase vastly. It was said that it will be difficult to make such schumperatian gains again in our economy. The amount of time wasted on humans driving is colossal. I'd like to see that time now spent learning, thinking and further innovation. A forced reflection time. Sadly, I worry a lot of the population will use it on short videos. But the opportunity for self improvement exists at least.

Electrical_Quality_6 2025-07-31 16:51

yep and dont forget other humans doing driving for other humans  who could be doing something more productive instead, or waiting for said humans. plus the lives this will save will be my greatest joy

Tesla0ptimus 2025-07-31 17:13

Or possibly a spot for inductive charging and robo cleaning for long distance travel. And for cars without inductive charging, they could possibly deploy Optimus robots to plug in when nobody’s around! Never thought that would be possible 5 years ago, but here we are!

_gosh 2025-07-31 17:13

Are these people going to be inside the vehicle or remote, like the people operating tesla bots?

yetiflask 2025-07-31 17:18

NYC traffic has a complexity unmatched in the Western world. You can't easily open that up.

orcawhales 2025-07-31 17:23

New York City has the coolest stuff already lol

meteoraln 2025-07-31 17:25

We literally don't have Waymo, and we're only getting it because some politician feels foolish that Austin has had it for years. And there's some more grinding needed to change the laws so that Waymos can operate without a driver.

cadium 2025-07-31 17:31

They're going to be inside the car and likely in the driver seat...

Goldenchyyld 2025-07-31 17:52

Levels

iamthesam2 2025-07-31 18:19

does it? i’d think paris or rome would have it beat in terms of complexity, but maybe not

BradlyL 2025-07-31 20:17

Picture UBER…. You got it.

TomatoHistorical2326 2025-07-31 20:45

It is just glorified uber service

UltraFastSloth 2025-07-31 21:22

If it needs operators in the vehicle, it is not a robotaxi.

FSUxNOLES101 2025-07-31 23:08

Whatever gets me to bar to drink with the boys the cheapest

zoglog 2025-07-31 23:48

lol taking this as a sign of expanding rapidly is a bit optimistic....

WenMunSun 2025-08-01 01:17

Mamdani probably needs to burn the city to the ground first. Maybe then people will wake up.

WenMunSun 2025-08-01 01:19

It says "Vehicle Operator, Autopilot". If this is just for a tester, then what is the job description for someone who is watching the Robotaxi? Do you have a link?

WenMunSun 2025-08-01 01:28

I'm pretty sure it's the same job description for both.

I_am_Regarded 2025-08-01 04:19

When do you rename the sub to r/teslafraudsters?

Quin1617 2025-08-01 04:34

Paris and Rome aren’t in the Western world.

bremidon 2025-08-01 09:16

Believe it or not, insurance companies will absolutely love this. While they will be a little sad to see the number of policies go down, they will be thrilled at the increased predictability which makes it a lot easier for them to make money.

iamthesam2 2025-08-01 11:17

uh, what?

Kirk57 2025-08-01 11:39

Waymo doesn’t just require extensive training in each city. They have to create (and maintain) a cm-level 3d map of every street, lane, curb… for the vehicle to operate.

ronsta 2025-08-01 13:08

What’s the plan to remove the driver assist thing? Cause it ain’t robotaxi till the human is out of the equation.

Quin1617 2025-08-01 14:13

Are they really? TIL, I always thought Europe was considered the east.

varixial 2025-08-04 08:15

Let me guess, you are American

Complete_Item9216 2025-08-04 09:01

Sure! But will it always be in a shape of a penis?

UnDosTresPescao 2025-08-04 11:05

Not as weird as Clermont. It's a very low density town west of Orlando. I'm guessing they really mean Orlando and this just lists the location of the Taxi Hub.

UnDosTresPescao 2025-08-04 11:06

More time for doom scrolling

hakimthumb 2025-08-04 15:54

Opportunities for human improvement should be pursued, even if it will mostly be squandered.

Quin1617 2025-08-04 16:59

Yes I am. I’ve always taken “the east” and “the west” literally. As in America(the continent) is the west, and Europe and Asia the east.

LeakyFish 2025-08-05 19:16

There...is no plan. Everyone with a Juniper that thinks they're gonna have a Robocab that makes money for them is in for a rude awakening.
