I don’t understand how a taxi is going to have doors that open out really wide in city traffic.
It never parks 😜
bs car doors that open out even wider?
Maybe they can make the seats a bench so only the passenger side opens for tighter street and both ppl can still get out.
Do we think the production wheels will have painted tires too?
Is that really any wider? It's *higher*, but I'm not convinced it's wider, I think it may actually be a lot narrower.
Why does it have a windshield?
Should have been a really space efficient 4 seater with sliding doors. I don’t understand why they would go for a 2 seater. Also, it seems like it’s quite low. Gl with lesser mobile people.
Make this a sports car. Light fast and nimble I’ll buy it. Has that cool s2000 vibe.
If this was a more regular hatchback like a Volkswagen polo I would love to buy it, even trade in my model 3 (which is a bit too sporty for me)
How many did they have going for the robotaxi event? I never saw a number, but it looked like they had a few. Edit: one of the first things in the article is they had 19 of them.
Without a steering wheel or pedals, I wonder how it is relocated or positioned. A flatbed truck and wheel dollies or some level of remote control?
Maybe it will come with an X box controller in the glove box...
Dont understand why it would be a 2door car for a taxi.. make it make sense lol

Found the product manager.
Also being able to seat 3 would be nice too.
You see doors that open up, and you think it’ll take MORE vertical distance to open up??
I don’t understand why taxis and Ubers are more than 2 people when 95% of taxi trips are for 2 people or fewer
>One more interesting thing is that the Tesla Cybercab robotaxi does not have a Tesla logo or emblem anywhere on the vehicle. This is because it can be instantly identified as the Tesla Robotaxi and doesn’t need identity badges like the Cybertruck. Ahh yes, the Cybertruck, notorious for blending in.
Did you see the doors? That's the opposite of what they do... Which... Is the whole point
The robovan will be more for what you are referring to. Most trips in the US are by 1-2 people. More storage, smaller car. I am surprised people thought it would hold more than 2
They can always change that if its inconvenient
I am wondering why it has such weird wheel trims. Maybe they are hiding something significant about the design or manufacture of the wheels? "The Limiting Factor" did a video about magnesium casting techniques.....do you think?
My guess is there will be a way to manually control it in service mode using the screen. Maybe like the summon app but on the screen.
I understand not wanting to make it extra length to allow four people, but I feel like they could make it 3 across like a normal back seat
Love it
You’re saying that in a sarcastic way like the thing you quoted implies the Cybertruck blends in, which is the opposite of what it’s saying.
This would actually be a really good idea.
Because the original is grammatically incorrect. It should be “This is because, like the Cybertruck, it can be instantly identified as…”
Are they painted? Looks like the hubcap is just extending over the tire.
My first thought was an airless tire.
Yes they are painted. Marquees brownlee pointed it out when he reviewed the event. They look pretty dumb up close.

A touch ironic that a vehicle with no Frunk is the headliner at a frunk-or-treat event
That probably has to do with airbags. Can’t have airbags if there’s a giant screen in front of you. Someone can correct me on this but I think that’s why the cybertruck also couldn’t have a bench? Probably the one thing they did think about.
Ya that’s painted for sure. Would honestly be a bad idea since the gold paint won’t match the hubcap after wear and tear.
Oh. That would make a lot of sense. Although as long as we're making self driving cars, I think we have some room for some innovation there too.
So you don’t get insects flying into your face.
We don't know that it has "No Frunk" the Frunk just might not be something for the general public to use. Probably empty with servicing parts or tools is my guess.
Buy one and hack a steering wheel into it, which I'm sure will happen at some point.
people do underestimate that issue. there is also the likely outcome that robotaxi's will have to comply with the ADA and something that looks like a Honda Element will do far better than a sports car looking option. Form over function strikes again at Tesla.
That’ll be sketchy getting it on a flatbed.
Tesla vehicles are put on car carriers at the factory so there would have to be a process to ship them out. Though they could just train FSD how to drive up a carrier.
Usinger thinner paint than what's on my black model 3.
Yeah, that's what I thought too.
I wonder if they will do a deal with some tyre manufacturers and do a set of gold wall tyres like they used to have white walled ones back in the day.
This is a concept only. No production line exists. None of the FSD stuff is legal anywhere. The price is 100% a fiction.
Elon said they had 20 at the event.
He actually said 'another 20' as the first one appears, but I suspect this was a slip of the tongue.
How does that work with whitewall tires? How do they stay white?
You are overthinking this... They are supposed to look retro futuristic. Like Tron or Bladerunner.
Taxis today are effectively 2 doors... who sits in the front seat of a taxi?
They don’t stay white, unless you maintain them.
I sit in the front seat of Uber if there are more than 2 in our party.
Or just add a comma. > This is because it can be instantly identified as the Tesla Robotaxi and doesn’t need identity badges, like the Cybertruck. Though I like your way more.
This is the Model 2. It was never designed to be a taxi. A taxi would have a completely different form. Musk just called it a robotaxi to pump the stock. An automated taxi would be boxy. Aerodynamics aren't important. Needs to be easy to get in and out of. Needs luggage in the passenger compartment. Needs a higher roofline for more comfortable seating. Needs a least three seats.
Not overthinking this but my FSD will not work in the rain so will Robo Taxi be available in inclement weather? Light rain etc? I worry that a mother with a child will be in one of these things when it starts raining and with no steering wheel or pedals to intervene.
Yep this whole thing reeks of being hobbled together to show something shiny.
That roof is just screaming to be coated in solar. Could probably fit close to 700w on it. That'd be around 19 miles a day if they achieve the 5.5mi/kwh they claimed.
Yeah I feel like a lot of people are missing the point. This will lower the cost of 1-2 person trips, which are the vast majority of cab rides. Anyone who thinks the lack of additional seats will be an issue has completely missed the fact that you'll also be able to have a Model Y pick you up... and that will be available before the robotaxi. Do you want to pay more to ride around alone in a vehicle with 5 seats? Or would you like to ride in the small efficient car for cheaper?
19 miles is good. But Robotaxis will always be on the run.
So spend more to order a Model Y to pick you up... this is for parties of 2 or less.
All we need to do is mount computer screens in front of all the cameras and show them a simulated road based on the inputs from a gaming Wheel. Easy.
I also wonder how wide the vehicle is in the first place. Even with the door open it may not be much wider than a typical car with it's door open. Also the curbside door really doesn't matter, and it seems pretty easy to get in curbside and scoot over to the "driver" side in this.
Because it's cheaper to hire a ride that way, and they also offer larger vehicles that will also be taxis. If you need more seats, they'll be available before this is, and you are not the target market for this particular product.
1-2 rides a day with zero energy cost for the owner is a nice bonus, but more importantly the robotaxi can self recover if something weird happens and it doesn't get itself to a charger before running out of juice. And if you're not using it as a taxi, just a personal autonomous car, then that's 50% of the average american's daily commute. Driven consistenly over time in that manner, a 200 mile battery will take you 400 miles without charging over 10 days, instead of being empty in 5 days.
Will the doors open with a car next to it?
The rubber itself is white, so you can scratch it and it's still white underneath.
I don't think I knew that! I assumed it was some sort of coating.
"comply with the ADA"... uh no, it doesn't. The ADA doesn't mandate that taxis must be X wide or have back seats. What part of this vehicle is any LESS ADA compliant than any other car or even any other robotaxi like a Waymo? If anything the new door probably makes it EASIER for someone with wheelchair to transfer in
My FSD would disable multiple times in the middle of freeway under heavy rain. It’d also take wrong exits or shift lanes unnecessarily. Without a properly functioning FSD this is nothing but a concept. I give FSD another 10 years to get it right.
I think the wheel covers are the most aero they can be. The paint is to make it look cooler :-)
looks sick but I will eat my hat if this becomes mainstream and useable this year
Optimus puts it on the truck, silly.
Pedals and steering wheel for emergencies. Mini Optimus?
I think the screen is enough for slow steering
