Should I buy a Model S as my first Tesla in 2026?

osteopathicdoc | 2026-03-13 22:48 | 20 views

I’m considering buying my first Tesla and have been really drawn to the Model S. **Yes, I know it is being discontinued soon.** I would likely purchase it brand new in 2026. I recently test drove one and loved the performance, the interior space, and especially the technology like Full Self Driving and the entertainment features. I’m curious what current Model S owners think. Is it still worth buying going into 2026, or would you recommend looking at something like the Model 3 Performance or another EV instead? I’ve also looked at the Lucid Air and liked it, but it felt like it was missing some of the tech ecosystem Tesla has. For those who own a Model S, how has your experience been with reliability, maintenance, and overall value? If you were buying today, would you still choose the Model S?

Just traded in a 12 year old S for a new 3. If you can afford it, I'd go with the S.

osteopathicdoc 2026-03-13 22:55

how do you feel? I feel like the 3 is too small for me.

The_Noob_Idiot 2026-03-13 22:55

And don't forget it's being discontinued.

Yes. Buy the S. Stop dicking around and just buy it if you can comfortably do so. It'll still get updates for years and years. That's the main issue 5 years from now, in my opinion. The car itself is amazing. I'm on my 2nd Model Y and it's just as amazing as the first. I hate the S is going away, but I'll still likely buy one next time around even if it's used.

Depends what you mean by small. I'm a big dude, and the 3 is actually easier to get in and out of and doesn't feel cramped to me. But the S has more space in the back seat and waaaaay more space for cargo. My wife has a Y and we would still take the S when needed to haul anything of size. And more space in the back to things before even having to put the seats down.

I have the Model Y Juniper. Recently got a SC loaner 2024 Model S. I prefer my Juniper to be honest. More practicality and higher off the ground. Juniper interior was quieter, which surprised me since the Model S is almost double the price. Model S interior felt basic and air suspension didn't really impress me too much. Big and bulky. Didn't like the FSD visualization on the smaller front screen. Only positive is the acceleration and performace. I'm glad I have my Model Y and why it's Tesla best selling vehicle.

I absolutely love my 2022 Model S. I also have a Model 3 RWD, Model 3 Performance and a Cybertruck. I think the S might be my overall favorite and I was planning to upgrade to a new Model S when HW4/HW5 Unsupervised FSD finally materialised so I’m super bummed that it’s being discontinued. I’m not super concerned about the parts given that they are still fixing old form factor Model S’s from over 10 years ago.

The s is a great car. Drives really nice and its just a beautiful looking car especially the 2021 and up cars.

Academic-Gas-8012 2026-03-14 00:13

In case you didn’t get that, it’s being discontinued

Other than swapping my tires, absolutely no maintenance. Love the car more than any car I’ve ever owned. The car really does it for me. I own a 23’ Model S w 19k Miles. She’s my baby. Wish I had those new interior lights but I’ll live https://preview.redd.it/lnrtdd998xog1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d34f319e9bc78285913878b424a3476336a95e4

I did…my first ev was a model s plaid 2026 and dont regret it one bit 🙂

Same here. Own the 2026 MYP.. rented the 2023 Model S LR before buying it and I dont see how in the world this is a $90K vehicle. Where is all this extra luxury? It felt like a bigger, bulkier version of the 3/Y. The extra speed was awesome. The drivers dash was cool to have and probably should come on all Teslas. The air suspension was 'meh'.

Owned two Model S cars over 10 years now. They are great cars. The supercharging network meant no range anxiety in years. The UI is rock solid. My cars have done probably 70-80 software updates and it works OTA just like a cellphone. I’ve had autopilot camera recalibrated OTA, and my old car was uncorked free of charge, turning it from a 5.5s to 60 car, to a 4s to 60 car. Repairwise I had one door handle failure 6.5 years into the first car. Replaced by Tesla mobile service in my driveway for $250. I don’t really understand cross-shopping the S and 3. They are very different driving experiences. If the differences don’t really matter, your subjective preferences are worth reconsidering carefully because you may not prefer the S as much as you think. For me, the 3 has never been a consideration.

lnxgod 2026-03-14 05:11

It really depends if you want to be driven or you want to drive I think the model 3 performance is a significantly better car to drive I've had two model three performances a model s performance and a model s plaid and the plaid is a one-trick pony

Bruh I have the same color with same ppf. It is just my beast that I will die with haha. Cheers!

I heard they gonna announce a new car or a new refresh model soon. Might worth the wait if u are able too? 🤷‍♂️

Appropriate_Dress568 2026-03-14 07:45

Well, I really do love my Cybertruck too (which also feels like the most technologically advanced out of the bunch), but overall, the S has to win because it’s still a normal sized vehicle and more practical overall.
