Nah, vision is just too good. Such a shame they won’t combined the two, but I get it.
Have you shunned all updates since 2022?
Judging from that UI, yes I think that's what they did.
Dude update your shit
Still running it here on my 2018 3 for the next week or so. Trading in for MYP!
I’m on 2022.20.8
I get that radar is nice and I agree that combining it would be great but you are missing out on so many great features on nearly 4 year old FW.
Why...
I’m curious what non-QOL features have been added for Intel cars that you’d consider great.
I think this question identifies you as part of a minority on this subreddit that isn't obsessed with QOL features. If you don't use FSD the updates won't meaningfully change the car behavior.
Still running it on my S Dec 2014
You’d have to define non-qol for me. This is specific to you. For me, most of the changes would be qol and if it is not then I don’t really care. I rarely use AP so none of those updates bother me but some people live on it so it is a much higher priority. One of the greatest features for me (I don’t know if you have global headlights) but in 2024, the adaptive high beam FW was released and since I do a lot of night driving, this was a game changer. YouTube and Netflix steaming was also greatly improved in 2025 FW
If you prevent them from turning off radar, TACC & Autosteer are better. It allows much closer following. When they turned off the radars, because the cameras simply are not as good, they massively increased the minimum follow distance to one that is wholly unreasonable (in Europe), and starts braking when your overtaking even when you start the manouver 3x the distance from the vehicle in front that a normal person would do, to the annoyance of everyone else around you.
At this point it wouldn’t matter. You’re so far out of date it’s likely a car computer would be required to get it up to date. So many updates since 22. The system freaks out if something is 6months out.
It’s to market it to other manufacturers as a p&p unit utilizing their cameras.
I think so, I have a 10-18 build m3
Funny, here in the US I feel like my 2022 follows too close, and barely changes its distance when I change the follow distance setting.
Yeah it’s time dude. HW4 and latest SW are amazing. I haven’t had a complaint about FSD in about a year.
I've still got mine!
Also this. You won’t need a new computer but you are well past auto release. It’s quite likely that you’ll need a service visit to update your car manually with at least 3 updates. Behind the scenes there have been at least 2 security updates that you can’t skip. Easily done though.
I really wish my m3 would not follow as closely though 😭 max distance doesn't feel like enough!
I remember when I was in Indiana to visit my wife’s family and my father in law asks me while I’m tailgating all the time. That’s when I learned that Americans apparently are taught to keep about double the distance that anyone here in Germany would consider ample distance. Then again when everyone is driving cars that are twice as heavy, I suppose you have to compensate for the longer brake distance.
I assume the standards to get a driver’s license are stricter in Germany, so you don’t have as many people doing absolutely idiotic, unpredictable moves with their car. I feel like I have to leave a lot of space in case I need to slam on the brakes
That's funny. I'm Belgian actually and learnt to drive there before moving to the US. I find that the main spot where it gets too close is on smaller roads. I worry that the driver in front will feel that I'm trying to hurry them on / that I'm tailgating when I'm just trying to follow, rather than me feeling uncomfortable about being close :) Cars here are definitely a lot less disciplined on the highway than in (Northern) Europe though, especially when it comes to lane etiquette which does also make me want to keep more distance sometimes.
I updated from a 2021 to 2024 release without issues on a Model X with MCU2. There were two step between, don't remember off the top of my head which it was. EDIT: 2021.24.28 -> 2022.8.10.17 -> 2023.38.9 -> 2024.8.9 when i check the logs - belive that's correct.
I have the option for Vision parking or ultrasonics. I run the vision system because it's objectively better. OP is nuts, but I am jealous if they still have follow distance 1 available.
Why on earth would you want to follow more closely? The car already drives too close for safe stopping at the furthest follow distance.
Are you one of the tailgating morons? I’m in EU and even at 6 or 7 I’m not always comfortable with following distance. And it is illegally close at anything under that.
At first, refusing to update past this FW was a personal stance against Tesla for disabling radar and going to vision without any notice or warning. I told myself I would only update if Tesla added features that actually made the car better for my uses. Then every update came around it was only little QOL features, then Intel cars started missing out on a lot of new features. I haven't really kept up with anything since. The car is still completely functional, nothing that I can tell has been bricked, follow distance can still be set to "1." I do receive [this message occasionally](https://ibb.co/0yRhkfxh), but only in the last 6 months or so. As I understand, if I want to update, I'll probably have to go to a service center and tell them I need one of the safety recall software versions and they won't give me any problems. Who knows, I'll probably just let it ride out at this point. 2021 Model 3 LR with 75K miles.
Did they give you any issues (or comments) when they valued your trade in?
I find the following distance totally fine.
Absolute Chad
Lmfao no it isn’t Vision cruise control etc is fine (although radar is more responsive when cars in front of the one directly ahead of you slow down) The vision park assist is still awful in bad weather or dark car parks
Follow distance can still be set to 1.
Personal attacks will get you no love around here.
Birds eye view.
I’m confused. We have two 2020 models, a 3 and a Y. Both of them are equipped with radar hardware. Both of them are up to date with the software. Both of them still use radar while driving and parking. Tesla didn’t take it away from our cars. Are you saying it will be taken away if you update?
That's not available on Intels
2019 here, I miss radar. If I didn't have FSD, I'd probably want a radar AP build. Radar AP was more chill. I rarely used 1 for follow distance, but it was safe due to the feature where it would sense the speed of the car in front of the car in front of you and preemptively brake before the car in front of you pressed the brakes. It bounced a radar bream under the car in front of you. FSD is absolutely safer. It will dodge things (deer, animals, people) and react to completely stopped traffic. Radar will not.
They disabled radar if you are on any FW after 2022.20.8. You can confirm this by trying to decrease your follow distance to 1, if it doesn't allow you are on vision.
Does radar prevent phantom braking? I don't use the cruise on my Tesla because of the 2% chance it randomly throws the brakes on for no reason.
I can't remember the last phantom brake I've had (I use AP every day, highway driving), but it has happened once or twice over the last 5+ years.
They updated so you can turn auto wipers off when on autopilot. Which for me was a big problem. Sunny day wipers on 60% of the time 😂
Wow! I remember that being a big deal to me too, but totally forgot.
I was on the same firmware until my battery died at 50k miles last April and had to be replaced. They couldn't install it without going to at least 2023.44 which is where I am now. No issues here and I have some of my features the way I want them without recall or disabling.
That’s interesting. I don’t have my car with me today but I think that’s the FW it’s showing as available for update. What FW is showing available to you?
It uses ultrasonic sonar while parking and at low speeds, the radar was only while in motion for AP.
Minimum distance on mine just means people pulling into the gap constantly and forcing it to slow down.
Nope. You're thinking of ultrasonics not radar.
Cameras are not as good which is why Robotaxi uses radar
When they’d come in this old more often than not they’d fail updates. Older S and X on MCU2 were capable of it. But 3/Y we’d call in a regional guy to try and manually update them. 1:10 were successful the rest got car computers.
This is not MCU2, MCU2 can handle longer durations between update. Intel CC did not.
People tailgate incessantly in the US and don’t even realize it’s a problem most of the time. Like, 1 car length gaps at 80mph in a Chevy Yukon without batting an eye. It’s insane.
It literally doesn’t. Where do you people get this shit from? Lol
do you like people constantly cutting you off? I don't use autopilot in any kind of traffic
2026.2.6 now, i guess it'll jump forward in time at once and bypass a few years worth of updates.
it was sarcasm
you gotta put an /s on it, no one can tell these days because people say stuff like that all the time and are entirely serious
This is what i hate with tesla vision. Follow distance is way too close even while using 7
Having a 2016 Lincoln with auto high beams to compare to, the auto high beams on my 2018 M3 are terrible.
OPs the equivalent of a OTA caveman. Bro's stuck in 400 BC
You want to get hacked. This is how you get hacked.
Software update your car, windows (or Mac or Android etc) on home PC, update all your devices. This is like looking my dads phone . Turn dark mode on for +5HP. Oh and you should add some wind to your tires (42psi cold if you 20” uberturbine).
Up until a couple weeks ago, I was on HW2.5 with 2023.something firmware. Whatever it was right before the NHSTA Christmas update. Still kept cruise control on if you disengaged AP via the steering wheel. Working radar with 1->7 distance options. Stayed well centered. It had its quirks, but it was pretty nice overall. Recently updated to HW3 w/ FSD 12.6.4. The transition has been interesting...
My ultrasonics said STOP every time I went into my garage rendering them essentially useless in that daily scenario. I could park using only the screen using vision. Heck a loaner HW4 model Y folded the mirrors and parked itself in my tight 1 car garage. For me vision is astronomically better than the ultrasonic.
I’m the exact opposite. I literally get upset when I don’t get an update. Also, how long are you going to drive on your deflated tires?
Ultrasonics always stopped me before I hit something Vision would have repeatedly either driven into things or allowed me to do so The primary aim of a parking sensor is to avoid hitting things, so as far as I’m concerned that’s a bigger issue than them being over-cautious
I miss radar in my old MS for two reasons: being able to see that there’s a car in front of the car in front of me, and for dense fog.
Ah, that’s a faulty BLE sensor that popped up recently.
I believe if you look at the stopping distance of most vehicles, they are mostly in the same ballpark if they are “empty”. A loaded pickup truck will take more distance obviously.
Why on earth did they switch it off instead of using it at the same time as the cameras? It's there, physically installed, so it boggles my mind that we can't use it
exactly this
True, in Germany the legal minimum follow distance is the distance that you would need to react to someone in front of you doing a full brake, and then brake without hitting them. There’s a formula for that that we learn in driving school, but the rule of thumb on a dry surface is to take half of your speed in meters, so at e.g. 100km/h you need to keep at least 50 meters of distance.
