Will used Tesla S&X plaid go up/hold value as Tesla discontinues them?

DryFox11 | 2026-03-12 17:46 | 9 views

I’m considering getting a used S or X plaid and am worried that the price will increase as inventory shrinks up. I was aiming for a 2021 s plaid. Should I buy it now, or wait another year and get a 22 or 23 plaid?

Old/Used technology doesn't typically go up in value

I would never get a discontinued model, as spare parts might not be even produced anymore in the long run.

Once discontinued…the price for all model years of S/X will only go down. There won’t be any new hardware or customized software improvements other than regular bug fixes and support updates.

I hope they go down because I want a used X!

Make sure the one you are going to buy, has the AMD Ryzen MCU, roughly 2021 to present, and preferably HW4 - 2023 and onwards. Most of the Tesla experience is in software, and the latest chips would somewhat extend the time receiving the latest updates.

The HW4 Model X will hold its value for quite some time. Even now, they are quite expensive. People love SUVs, and there are no other choices, especially since other companies aren't even close to FSD.

History shows that when iconic models are discontinued without a direct replacement, resale values tend to firm up as 'new' inventory vanishes.

True, but do you think there will be a shortage that will cause prices to increase due to low supply?

DryFox11 2026-03-12 19:35

That’s what I figured. I feel like if I wait to buy I may not be able to get one or they will be more expensive.

They weren’t selling in the first place. There’s too much supply.

Mostly likely down. Occasionally, cars go up in value over time. I doubt it for this car. It’s basically just a Y or a 3.

HW4 Plaid with FSD bought out may retain good value till HW5 comes out. Especially if monthly subscription cost goes up

No.

Agree with this. S/X Plaid and LR with HW4 and FSD paid for will go down in value at a much slower rate and maybe even hold in value for the next year.

I'm not sure your post makes sense to me. You're considering getting a used S or X plaid and you're worried that the price will increase. So then buy it right now? But then you say that you are considering waiting a year and getting one that's a year younger next year which would mean that you're buying the same car, with the same number of years since it was new, but just doing it a year later But if you're worried about price is increasing, why are you waiting? I guess I'm confused about your plan. Just go buy the car.
