Fine. Sometimes it will want to take an exit off of the highway. That used to be worse though.

Do you mean full self driving? Or what used to be called "auto pilot" ? FSD is pretty cool, it takes you from your parking spot, to a parking spot where you tell it to go. Most of the time no interaction is required. About 98% of our driving is with FSD.

Depends on what you want. For keeping a lane on the highway its typically doing pretty well. On smaller roads it sometimes has some difficulties. On little country roads with only side lines it’ll start driving dead center, so useless. On a roundabout, it’ll total your car.

Adventurous-Hyena366 2026-03-11 23:59

It's nowhere near as good as FSD. Comparing to other autonomous lane-keeping? Well, it nags every mile to touch the steering wheel. To me, this isn't hands-free driving if I have to use my hands constantly. I'd rather just just steer myself. Especially since it's steering feels a little jerky and uncertain. For me, TACC only, or pay for FSD.

It is fantastic. Great for highways. I've only had positive experiences with it after 70k km in three years. I use it for my daily commute. I'll miss it on my next Tesla, that's for sure

Driving with autosteer is ok. It keeps you in your lane, but you basically have to keep your hands on the wheel. FSD is amazing, and puts Tesla far and above other EVs. You can travel hours without touching the wheel or pedals with FSD.

c4koth 2026-03-12 00:29

Autosteer is meh. I think there are plenty of other manufacturers that offer the same or better capability. Full Self Driving though… my god. I actually feel safer with FSD in control than myself. It’s that good.

Lead_Paint0341 2026-03-12 00:33

Auto-steer (auto-pilot) in my 19 S with hw3 is sketchy. Over shoots curves and ends up half way in on-coming traffic. Highway use is nice.

DuckTalesLOL 2026-03-12 00:38

It's essentially Lane Keep that every other modern car has, and works fine. I wish they'd make it hands free like FSD is, but maybe someday.

IGNORED34 2026-03-12 00:54

Absolutely love it. Camera is covered and just use a knee to keep it from tripping. 90k of driving probably 75-85% of that was on auto pilot. I won't be buying a new Tesla because it's gone. 25model s will be my last Tesla which sucks, because I love the UI. But not as much as autopilot

lazybandit94 2026-03-12 00:55

Flame

lazybandit94 2026-03-12 00:55

Just turn the volume up

blazinbit 2026-03-12 01:03

It’s okay.. Just way too much nagging to keep hands on the wheel even when you’re paying attention. But, FSD is awesome.

Flakarter 2026-03-12 01:19

In my mostly suburban driving, I use it at least 50% of the time. Even on short trips. I really like it. But I also added the S3XY commander to automatically reengage autosteer after lane changes.

aim4squirrels 2026-03-12 02:24

I just used Autosteer extensively for 2 three hour drives this last weekend.  It was my first extended use of Autosteer. I had FSD for 3 months from a friend referral on my new MYJ last June, and got the free month-long trial at Christmas.  I was very impressed with Autosteer.  On highways, it's 90% of FSD. The biggest differences I noticed:  1. It won't change lanes, 2. It won't avoid road hazards like potholes, dead animals, blown trucker tire shrapnel, etc. 3. When you approach a lane merge, it will cheat toward the merging lane in what I'm assuming is an attempt to center itself between the two lanes, and then drift back when the lanes narrow again, 4. If you're on a rural highway with poorly marked lanes, it can wander a bit, though it never went off the road.  5. Again on a rural highway, if you're approaching a bend in the main highway with a smaller local road that branches off straight, Autosteer might choose to go straight if you don't intervene. Meaning, I'm not sure it's really paying any attention to the routing from the Tesla navigation app. 6. Autosteer nags you for driver input a good deal more than FSD, and it will occasionally disengage abruptly for no reason I could ascertain.

jefferios 2026-03-12 02:36

Excellent, it doesn't automatically change lanes, just sit back and relax.

Tin_Can_739 2026-03-12 02:40

Autosteer, FSD, and cruise are fairly similar for me. They all kind of suck at lane merging, crossing traffic, and except cruise like to be babysitted. Otherwise they work well I’d say 60% of the time in the city. There’s a lot of the above where I drive which is location dependent. FSD on the freeway misses my exits the majority of the time, but again I have to be aggressive to make them which is location dependent. May work well in areas with less aggressive drivers and more time to merge with no merging lanes.

rsg1234 2026-03-12 03:10

It’s ok. There are real safety risks compared with FSD. For example, on my 2 lane highway commute route there is a section where the left line breaks momentarily for the median because there is a home driveway on the left. 20% of the time AP will try to violently swerve into that median at 60mph. I don’t understand why Tesla wouldn’t give just a little bit of logic from FSD to avoid these issues On an open freeway where you don’t need/like to change lanes a lot, it’s amazing.

UsedApricot6270 2026-03-12 03:23

Same - like really the same. 80k mi. 3ish years. Daily commute. Great for highways. It could be a bit more centered in the lane, but all positive experiences with it.

chigoku 2026-03-12 03:42

It’s auto-steer, it’s not hands free driving. You’re supposed to keep your hands on the wheel.

It is very good on old teslas where they have the stalk to activate it. It is much worse on newer teslas as you need to go into park to switch It on/off. I don't use it on my newer tesla, only on long trips. As a day to day thing, I prefer tacc. When it works, it is pretty good.

Shot_Excitement3481 2026-03-12 05:43

it's good but phantom braking ruins it.

nnnope1 2026-03-12 06:06

Nice on highway. Not as good as FSD, but it's usable. Nags for steering wheel interaction a little more than I'd like. Sometimes I like to throw it on for a sec when I'm going to be partially distracted for a moment. Like rummaging for something, checking something quickly on my phone, or taking a call. It's nice to have the extra "eyes" on the road in those situations.

Head_Panda6986 2026-03-12 06:48

Its nice to have the option

khaid 2026-03-12 07:11

it’s free. fsd and autosteer are not similar products to be compared. fsd is in its name. full self driving - subscription based autosteering is tacc & lane centering highway assist - free competitors have highway assist too AND hands free, but they are subscription based.

khaid 2026-03-12 07:13

that has happened to me before 😂 i plant myself in the middle lane rather the right lane when i can. it tends to freak out with traffic merging into your lane as well.

Mmm_bloodfarts 2026-03-12 07:43

The point is that the car steers automatically

salgudman 2026-03-12 11:25

Name few other manufacturers who do auto steer the same or better? Everything I’ve tried so far is shit

ipokesnails 2026-03-12 14:07

Continuous Autopilot is awesome, having to re-engage after changing lanes was my only real problem with autosteer.

stc313is 2026-03-12 15:01

It's great as long as you don't have the mindset that it's a free version of FSD. It's not. You will need to take over at times, but it's not hard to know when after using it for a bit. You still have to pay attention, but you get to relax a bit. I find that it kind sucks in stop and go traffic, which is unfortunate bc that's what I really wanted it for, but it's great in normal highway traffick. It only lets you go 5 over on non-highway roads, which really sucks, so you still get to do plenty of manual driving.

UnknownNinja_ 2026-03-12 15:26

Without EAP it is not really usable. Had to turn it off on my 2026 M3 as i stupidly didn't opt for EAP and now when i indicate on the motorway not only does it turn off autopilot but also the adaptive cruise control. No option to split the diff like i have heard on previous versions.

c4koth 2026-03-12 16:26

On the more capable ends, Ford’s BlueCruise and GM’s SuperCruise are better than Autosteer and don’t require hands on the steering wheel for highway use.

GlitteringResort9111 2026-03-12 23:05

Just hit blinker and it will change lanes for you

ipokesnails 2026-03-12 23:06

Unless something has changed, that only works if you have FSD.

GlitteringResort9111 2026-03-12 23:18

Could be. I’m still on FSD trial until May. I’ll know for sure then.

Ordinary-Map-7306 2026-03-14 03:20

Almost flawless. When approaching a "Y" for an exit it will shift to the right to exit and then shift left to continue on the highway in the right lane. The second is phantom braking from hills, not seeking the road ahead like an overhead bridge. Third is getting the speed limit wrong and stopping on the highway!!! It remembers construction zones that no longer exist. It should be dumb cruise control not pretending.

Ordinary-Map-7306 2026-03-14 03:22

Ford Autosteer is 10x better. Toyota is too reactive and bounces around in the lane.

Flakarter 2026-03-14 05:21

That's an FAS or EAP thing only.
