Just saw a RoboTaxi - without the side mirrors but with the steering wheel and the driver :D (Sunnyvale, CA)

In Sunnyvale, CA I see a lot of different self driving tech rolling around. Today I encountered this.

It's kind of strange that it's a taxi and it's a 2 door especially when all their other vehicles are 4 door.

jazzfog 2026-03-10 21:56

I know, right! We are family of 3, how do we ride together? And in the US families are typically 4 or more from what I see.

-MullerLite- 2026-03-10 22:00

You take two or find something that fits everyone. The same way 5 passengers can't fit it to a normal Uber.

-MullerLite- 2026-03-10 22:01

The vast majority of ridesharing is done by 1 or 2 people.

ChunkyThePotato 2026-03-10 22:10

Obviously if you request a ride for 3 people it would call a Model Y. This car is for rides with 1 or 2 people, which is the vast majority of rides. It makes all those rides significantly cheaper since it's a cheaper car to build and run compared to a Model Y.

ChunkyThePotato 2026-03-10 22:12

How is it strange? It makes perfect sense. The vast majority of rides only have 1 or 2 people. This will serve all those rides, and do so very cheaply because it's such a small car. The remaining rides can be served by Model 3 or Model Y.

MurkyTomatillo192 2026-03-10 22:30

I just don’t understand why the tires are so wide in diameter with a thin sidewall on what’s supposed to be a comfortable mode of transportation. It looks cool (maybe?) but how is that practical lol

SurfaceLapQuestion 2026-03-10 22:34

They’re not, there’s a cover over them that covers most of the sidewall.

shenfever 2026-03-10 22:37

A CEO obsessed with procreation and continues to crank out vehicles you can’t put a family in

soggy_mattress 2026-03-10 22:44

They're two different sized wheels, too, between front and back. I rode in one during the "We, Robot" event and they felt just as comfortable as a Model Y \*shrug\*

soggy_mattress 2026-03-10 22:46

Maybe because large families don't typically use ride sharing platforms? What a strange comment. Are you just here to say negative things about Musk or something?

sid_276 2026-03-10 23:04

Not really. Most Ubers and cabs are two people. Some are 1. Less than 10% is 3 people. Plus the driver that is. 2 makes sense and it’s very comfortable.

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-03-10 23:08

I thought side mirrors are required by law.

They can be digital

TechByTom 2026-03-10 23:23

So, Cybertruck wheel covers 2.0?

wishingdeath 2026-03-10 23:34

Nice! I can't wait to ride in one

EatMeerkats 2026-03-10 23:43

[Not in the US.](https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-side-mirrors-elon-musk-says-will-be-removable-2021-10) They can test them with an exemption, but the car cannot be sold like this. Also see the Ioniq 6, which has digital side mirrors in other markets and physical ones in the US.

Fiinest_ 2026-03-10 23:54

Not necessary on a car that drives itself. Laws change.

Fiinest_ 2026-03-10 23:55

You call a Model Y and soon a Robovan.

Fiinest_ 2026-03-10 23:55

Cybercabs next month. Prove the second part I'll wait.

quantgorithm 2026-03-11 00:01

Dude get a grip.

PotatoCooks 2026-03-11 00:10

So we can have that but not digital matrix LEDs until just recently smh

You just gonna troll every post here every day now?

akpana65 2026-03-11 00:13

I so want…..!

IttzAngel 2026-03-11 00:31

because they need a driver and a coupe is too inconvenient?

Desperate-Review-727 2026-03-11 00:38

Willing to bet that you have a higher chance of getting arrested for that

needmoarboost 2026-03-11 01:04

I’ve seen 2 of these in Chicago in the last month. Odd car.

jazzfog 2026-03-11 01:37

Ford Model T is old car.

needmoarboost 2026-03-11 01:48

I said "odd"

offwing10 2026-03-11 01:53

Rear wheels are massive huh

jazzfog 2026-03-11 01:55

Oh, Sorry, I misread :D

-MullerLite- 2026-03-11 02:09

Is this a serious question? A 2 seater with a driver means only one passenger. Most 2 seaters have very little trunk space as well (or none at all).

shenfever 2026-03-11 03:22

Yes, I am. Please don’t tell him!

Background_Snow_9632 2026-03-11 04:03

Me too

Background_Snow_9632 2026-03-11 04:04

I love it!

waerrington 2026-03-11 04:49

You can order a model y robotaxi and seat 4

Soff10 2026-03-11 05:03

Sweet

Enlightened_D 2026-03-11 06:05

This made me think whatever happened to the new Roadster feel like it was supposed to come out forever ago

Slum-Bum 2026-03-11 06:18

You can uber a minivan without issue

eli0mx 2026-03-11 07:33

So we can still drive it while not driving it?

thegreatpotatogod 2026-03-11 08:41

American laws really just don't know what to make of any vaguely modern tech

ketoLifestyleRecipes 2026-03-11 09:17

That’s a cybercab. The robotaxi is a Y

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-03-11 10:38

JoelMDM 2026-03-11 10:39

All I want is this car with a steering wheel.

MisterWigglie 2026-03-11 15:47

You can also call a Model Y for robotaxi, cybercab is only the smallest model to serve 1-2 people rides

-MullerLite- 2026-03-11 17:09

For more money

-MullerLite- 2026-03-11 17:12

Don't need a side mirror if the car is doing the driving.

Unique-Mastodon8337 2026-03-11 18:54

I see one of these mid-Peninsula every day

jazzfog 2026-03-11 20:24

Near San Mateo?

Unique-Mastodon8337 2026-03-11 22:44

Actually Menlo Park/unincorporated San Mateo County

Quin1617 2026-03-12 00:27

New reveal is supposed to be on April 1st. So we’ll see in a couple weeks I suppose.

supertucci 2026-03-12 00:46

OMG I just saw one an hour ago in Austin! I was staring and staring I couldn't figure it out…

rpkusuma 2026-03-12 14:21

I'd put aftermarket side mirrors if I had one lmao

S4vingRyan-sPr1v8 2026-03-13 22:39

You and I both!
