Wipers on FSD driving me crazy

markfromslo | 2026-03-09 13:24 | 26 views

I don't understand why the wipers in my 2026 Model Y will automatically spray and wipe when I'm on FSD. It's such a mess and it's so irritating, especially right after I detail my car. I have to remember every time I turn on FSD to quickly go over to controls and turn wipers off. Once I disengage FSD and then start again, I have to do it all over again because it resets back to auto. I guess the theory is that the car wants to clean the area on the glass in front of the front-facing camera that sits on the other side of my rear view mirror; however the wipers don't even touch that spot as far as I can see. Is there a trick to disabling the wipers through FSD cycles? I am in California and rarely need the wipers on anyways and I am happy to just turn them on when I do need them.

Make sure the glass is clean on the interior of the glass where the cameras are. My car does the same and I am getting tempted to remove the wipers all together. (I won't)

If you’re gonna let the car do its own thing like drive itself you kind of have to let it do everything it needs.

markfromslo 2026-03-09 13:35

I'm confused. The interior of the glass where the camera is (the area in front of my rear view mirror) is not accessible as it is covered by the rear view mirror assembly.

markfromslo 2026-03-09 13:36

But it doesn't need it since the wipers don't hit the spot that it wants to clean.

That area is a place that needs to be cleaned if it is getting obstructed by off gassing from your cars interior. It’ll make the glass hazy and make the cameras have poor visibility. This is a service that usually will be covered free the first time. Check the glass at night from the exterior with a light and see if it looks like it needs cleaning.

FSD sets the wipers to auto. After starting FSD, switch wipers to OFF. No more unnecessary wiping.

LilyTwilight 2026-03-09 13:40

And it does need to be cleaned occasionally, though usually by service under warranty for free. It's actually pretty easy to do yourself but as with disassembling anything there's always a small chance you cause damage that wouldn't be covered under warranty so it's worth taking it into service.

Tesla service will usually clean it for free (one time) or if not, check YouTube...it is easy to clean, but make sure you follow the instructions to avoid "fogging" in that area. They made a design change with the latest vehicles earlier this year to reduce the affect of off-gassing from the plastic housing around the cameras

When I switch to OFF using FSD then seem to come right back to ON again. Using HW3

SoloPlayerSama 2026-03-09 13:46

You have two options 1. Manually turn off wipers everytime you engage FSD (this is what i do, you get used to it but yes I also wish there was simply an option to keep it off) 2. Buy S3XY commander which has programmable functions for the car and one of them is permanently off wipers!(amongst tons of other really cool options). I eventually will pick this up myself, but for now manually adjusting is second nature to me. [S3XY products.](https://www.enhauto.com/pages/commander)

777_heavy 2026-03-09 13:47

Weird since you have a new vehicle. I think that spot needs to be cleaned by a service technician

hear2fear 2026-03-09 13:49

Note: if you’ve had your front windshield tinted, they will often deny it as a covered free service.

hear2fear 2026-03-09 13:50

He specifically mentioned trying to find a way of getting around having to do that every time he engages FSD, or did you not read that part?

thombrowny 2026-03-09 14:14

It is indeed pain in the ass. And I am kinda tired of watching it when it barely rains, but it sets the wiper at level 3 setting or something. My first wiper worn out after 6 months of use.

troofguy 2026-03-09 14:14

Yea, I missed that part. Time for coffee

markfromslo 2026-03-09 14:46

Does using this void warranty?

markfromslo 2026-03-09 14:50

I took a look at the area closely, with my flashlight to make sure, and it's perfectly clean.

markfromslo 2026-03-09 14:51

Perfectly clean.

I got the answer from their site: # Will using your products void my Tesla warranty? We understand the importance of maintaining your vehicle’s warranty, and we’re happy to reassure you. To date, from thousands of users, we have not received a single report of our devices voiding Tesla warranties. **Important Considerations:** The only situation where a warranty could potentially be impacted is if a specific vehicle component fails or malfunctions, and it can be proven that the third-party accessory directly or indirectly caused the issue. In such cases, the component affected may have a limited warranty, and Tesla may charge for diagnosing or replacing this specific part. **Our Recommendation:** To ensure a smooth experience, we always recommend removing the accessory (Commander and its harness) before visiting a Tesla service centre. Different service centers may approach third-party accessories differently, and they might quickly attribute issues to the accessory without a thorough investigation. Removing the device beforehand ensures your vehicle can be fully checked without additional complications. Additionally, Tesla service centres might charge a fee to remove the accessory themselves, and there’s even the chance they may not reinstall it once removed. Removing it yourself before the service appointment helps you avoid these extra charges.

Exact same situation and issue for me, 2026 Juniper. I’ve taken it to service to have it cleaned twice, both times I got in the car to drive home, enabled FSD and it immediately squirted the fluid and started wiping. Even immediately when enabling after a car wash (and towel drying) same thing. It will squirt and wipe at least once a day but usually twice. The moment I enable FSD, I will immediately turn off the wipers, but usually that one second is too long to prevent it.

FriendlyFriendster 2026-03-09 15:16

I appreciate you finding the answer on your own and then sharing it with the rest of us!

No_Purpose6384 2026-03-09 15:16

I’ve had Tesla clean inside the camera area twice but it has not fixed this issue

No_Purpose6384 2026-03-09 15:16

Also, sometimes the squirting and wiping happens the exact moment you enable FSD. Sometimes I have not been quick enough within that second to disable wipers.

PilotPirx73 2026-03-09 15:37

S3XY commander is really a must have for Tesla vehicle. It can fix this issue, along with tons of other stuff: regen adjustment, headlights, popping the doors and so much more.

throwyourdubsup 2026-03-09 15:56

I just had them clean the camera assembly at the service center. The wipers always activate for me (including completely clear days). I can’t recall the last time the autowipers were on where it didn’t wipe my windshield unnecessarily. Worst part of my car, hands down

Curtnorth 2026-03-09 16:03

This is incredibly petty of me but I won't hide the truth, the wipers situation is actually a large factor in why I'm not interested at all in FSD. My trials were over a year ago now, so I know FSD has improved quite a bit, but it was not very smooth for me at the time, but the windshield wipers? Almost a deal breaker on their own if I'm being honest.

reddituser4049 2026-03-09 16:14

Not currently compatible with new build Juniper models.

markfromslo 2026-03-09 16:48

FSD is the reason I cannot let go of this car for another. I am at 82% FSD usage now. It's incredible.

icy1007 2026-03-09 17:36

They spray automatically too? That must be exclusive to the Model Y. My Model 3 and Model S don’t do that.

Guilty-Car858 2026-03-09 17:53

I took mine apart and cleaned it and I stopped getting notifications and phantom wiping after I did that.

quetiapinenapper 2026-03-09 18:28

New cars gas more than you’d expect on the interior. Camera looks clean. Might not be. Doubly so the second exterior dust builds up or light hits an angle that causes the camera to see it. If you look at your live camera grin sentry on the app if that front one has a slightly blueish tint or is a little blurry it’s building up.

PghSubie 2026-03-09 20:56

Any of the Auto-driving features depend on the cameras having a good view. So, every auto function sets the Wipers to Auto. The topic comes up repeatedly in every online Tesla forum available. And, Yes, Everyone acknowledges that Tesla's Auto-Wipers algorithm sucks

SoloPlayerSama 2026-03-09 22:30

Oh, good to know. I'm sure they'll get it updated at some point though.

Tsurfer4 2026-03-10 00:08

I just think how fortunate I am that FSD drives for me. If it needs to wipe more, I'm fine with that.

Yep, just confirming that the S3XY Commander resolves this issue and has loads of other neat/convenient features. You can also add-on the stalks, buttons, knob, dash, etc.

VineMan77 2026-03-10 17:41

This is my least favorite part of my 2018 Model X. Smart wipers are dumb AF

friscenstein 2026-03-10 22:30

My 2026 did it on the way home from the delivery center. Does it everyday, especially if you just cleaned the car. It literally makes the window less clean.

EnrollmentTime 2026-03-11 18:35

The camera is not clear for it to see out of.
