Summon feature with Enhanced auto pilot fail

farmerMac | 2026-03-02 03:30 | 26 views

Tried summon for the first time today. I was parked (backed in) and no other cars nearby. Concrete curb behind the car. I was about 20ft away, in front, to the left of the car. The car backed up instead of going forward, hit the curb, tried to go backwards again, and i stopped it before it went over the curb. I have the summon version that is called "not smart" according to the app and i have to hold a button for it to come. My car has HW 2.5, 2018 Model 3 with enhanced auto pilot.

I thought that not smart summon was just the two arrows. Forward and backward.

mine has those arrows and also a larger blue summon button above the arrows that you must press for the car to come to you.

I believe the arrows are dumb summon and the cone to me button is smart summon

Sounds like you hit the arrows or your directions were backward. I’ve used the arrows to move forward and back but the actual summon will change direction on its own as long as you hold the button down.

Nope. I hit the blue button. Made sure removed my finger and tried it again and it did it again. I came home and street parked it a went around the circle I live on. It worked in that scenario backing up and coming to me going around the circle

There are 3 levels of summon. Dumb (arrows), Smart (Come to me w/o FSD) and A.S.S. (Come to me w/ FSD). Old smart summon is based off of the enhanced autopilot software stack and is really good at hitting things and is very slow. A.S.S. uses the FSD software stack and is (in my experience) really good and drives quicker, much more human like.

I have the middle one. That explains it.

I just tested Summon feature on 2 cars with HW3 and HW4 and they both backed up before pulling out of a parking spot if you are backed into the parking space. No idea why it wants to do that. If you pull forward into a spot, it seems to work better. Seems counter intuitive but here we are lol. Using the A.S.S option as well.

I summoned it once in a Chick-fil-a parking lot. ASS decided that the best place to pick me up would be a drive-through lane, about 50 feet away from where I was. Not exactly "really good" IMO.

farmerMac 2026-03-02 16:18

ah! ok, so im not crazy. im not going to use the feature anymore. this was a trial, there's no need for it and seems like high risk of damaging another car or mine from what is essentially a party trick...

Lukeman269 2026-03-02 16:34

Yep I feel the same. Also seems pretentious to use the feature so it can pick me up at the front of the store. It is pretty cool when it works well though. Just takes a lot longer than it takes to walk to the car in most cases.

Instead of A.S.S. It should be named D.U.M.B. A.S.S. Because when it works it works quite well, but when it fails it does it in the dumbest way possible.

It gets drunk sometimes too. I use it at work to meet me at the entrance since it’s so many floors down and it won’t work till I’m halfway down and then it’ll sometimes just stop in the middle of the parking lot

farmerMac 2026-03-02 19:08

haha... "beta" in the true sense

farmerMac 2026-03-02 19:09

haha. i did see some horrible videos of summon fails, after my issue, and luckily my issue seems trivial now in comparison.

Careful, some people here don't like you telling the truth like that. I have had many successes with full self driving, summoning and dumb summon and other things as well. But I've had some instances where I was trained to never take my eye off the car regardless of whether it was doing the right thing or not because you'd never know if the split second is going to be enough for the car to do something stupid.

farmerMac 2026-03-02 21:31

Oh yeah. People in this sub are very sensitive about this... There's a few stretches of road near my house that the car will consistently try to keep the lane by taking a turning lane at full speed that will run the car directly into a concrete divider. I turned off the enhanced auto pilot and told my kids not to turn it on if they take the tesla, non negotiable.

Two weeks ago, I was behind a car, and that car was behind a stopped schoolbus. FSD decided that the best way to deal with it was to go into oncoming lane and ignore flashing red lights. That was the quickest I stopped the FSD in the longest time.

I did use summon the other day to impress some friends, otherwise I never use it because the radius is so small it’s easier to just walk to the car.

whoaaaa!!
