What do you guys think, will tesla stop updates on autopilot?

borgqueenx | 2026-02-23 20:50 | 25 views

fsd is getting all the love and i wonder if autopilot, heck, even EAP, is going to get upgrades or if its slowly going to be faded away. i kind of hope autopilot is going to get some love again when its going to be a 1500 usd package for new teslas...musk needs profit badly.

It’s dead, and has been since FSD development accelerated around 2020.

with every update they’re making it worse until drivers get fed up/forced into paying Elon the $99 a month. I know this because I’m about to cave

GameSyns 2026-02-23 21:03

I genuinely don’t recall AP getting any updates since they fixed the phantom braking flaw late 2022. I also don’t recall it needing any updates since that got fixed.

World_Lanky 2026-02-23 21:06

Well since they stopped adding it to new vehicles I would assume they’re no longer interested in updating it and forcing people to FSD

emmaanuelx 2026-02-23 21:12

I was also thinking that this would be a tactic to get people to subscribe to FSD

JtheNinja 2026-02-23 21:23

They already stopped updates like 5 years ago. And they stopped selling EAP. And they don't include Autosteer at all on new vehicles. It lives on in regions that don't have FSD, but that's it. It's been deprecated for a long time.

Soggy_Media485 2026-02-23 21:25

I don't think they even fixed that. I still get phantom breaking in 2026. I used it a few times on the freeway and never again. 100kmph to 0 in peak hour is not ideal

Soggy_Media485 2026-02-23 21:26

Good thing many competitor car companies offer cruise control for free

GameSyns 2026-02-23 21:44

Weird, I haven't had a single phantom brake event in 3 years. Although I really only use AP on longer drives.

Known_Rush_9599 2026-02-23 22:06

Maybe it's just me, but Autopilot is garbage. There are multiple times I'd rather have autopilot engaged instead of FSD, but I can't deal with how rough it is compared to FSD. For whatever reason, autopilot likes to slam the brakes for no reason. Of the 2 jobs it has.. go and stop, it does a shitty job. (Unless you enjoy it slamming the brakes.. then it's a win)

AJHenderson 2026-02-23 22:07

They want people using FSD. It's not worth maintaining autosteer as well and they haven't for years. It's not getting updates but eventually supervised FSD will be free or very cheap when other manufacturers catch up on the supervised side.

kvlle 2026-02-23 22:09

It hasn’t gotten worse (or better) in years. It’s remained the same

Jx022 2026-02-23 22:15

My tinfoil hat says it’s intentional to get the consumer to buy fsd

Known_Rush_9599 2026-02-23 22:30

If I didn't have FSD, I would have thought that FSD was just like autopilot.

Jx022 2026-02-23 23:16

Think everyone gets a trial of fsd unless they buy used from a non-tesla dealership

Known_Rush_9599 2026-02-23 23:49

If not when they buy, I think every now and again Tesla releases like a 2 week free trial. A friend of mine had a Tesla for a couple years and then got to take advantage of a random free trial.

smilingbudd 2026-02-24 01:45

It would be my last Tesla. Selling the car after 3 more years. Can't trust this company or the person running it anymore to have commitments to their customers.

StartledPelican 2026-02-24 01:52

Tesla does still offer cruise control, specifically TACC (traffic-aware cruise control) for free. Sadly, they no longer also offer Autosteer (lane keeping) for free.

powaking 2026-02-24 02:29

I still get them in my 2018 MS. No better no worse.

404_Gordon_Not_Found 2026-02-24 02:44

It is tinfoil hat if you think they made it worse to upsell FSD, it isn't tinfoil hat if you meant they didn't spend any effort to improve AP ever since the introduction of FSD

D1TAC 2026-02-24 02:57

I’ve caved for a few months. Once the winter started and then the potholes came out to play I disabled it.

Plastic-Coat9014 2026-02-24 03:24

AP is great as-is. The only thing I would like and pay for is vision monitoring like FSD. But that won’t happen.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 03:28

TACC on my 2026 MY has lane keeping...just not lane centering.....

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 03:28

You just described every corporation on the planet...

StartledPelican 2026-02-24 03:34

Haha, I hear you. But newer Teslas (sold on/after 2026-01-23 I think) now lack both!

gre-0021 2026-02-24 03:38

It also keeps you centered in the lane. And also there’s something up with your cameras, computer, or the speed limit data in your area because my HW3 22 M3LR runs Autopilot fine.

gre-0021 2026-02-24 03:39

Lmao fr, as if they’re gonna find an automotive company that cares about “commitments to their customers”

Known_Rush_9599 2026-02-24 03:40

The FSD on my 2025 M3P does fine, autopilot is complete garbage...

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 03:42

Ummm, no....AP is gone but TACC remains. Google it s your friend.

StartledPelican 2026-02-24 03:43

I meant they lack lane keeping and lane centering. It was a joke.

gre-0021 2026-02-24 03:53

Oh well that makes sense, Autopilot’s been optimized for the cameras, computer and dimensions of my car for the past few years, but they don’t update it anymore. And it’s not exactly optimized for your car more than it’s just ported over for new 3s, Ys, and the cybertruck. It’s apparently barely backwards compatible, or so I’ve heard.

burnersburneracct 2026-02-24 04:14

I just want to know when the class action suit is for FSD on HW3 is because it is still not usable…

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 04:25

Yeah, I wish TACC did lane centering instead of the lane keeping it does.... but it really is nothing to get one's undies in a wad over. All the cat ladies running around with AP post mortems crack me up because AP was never that great to begin with.....it was never more than a legend in their own minds.

WaffleHouseCEO 2026-02-24 05:25

Crazy thing is AP hasn’t received updates and is still better than the completion 😂

Soggy_Media485 2026-02-24 05:25

I know. But I couldn't be bothered using remembering what designation Tesla gave it and since basically all modern cars have auto steering, it's essentially the new cruise control.

katzners 2026-02-24 08:57

No it's not. I have driven a Skoda before my MY and even back then it had a better Spurhalteassistent than the Model Y ever had.

Scott_IUsed2Know 2026-02-24 12:44

Personally I'm sure it's dead to Elon. I didn't upgrade from the no-radar version of my car until about 8 months ago (held out like 3-4 years) and I can tell you I get tons more phantom braking from this version than my old one- and I have to keep 2 cars distance (and I know, 1 car distance isn't that safe but I live in the Northeast where more than 1 car distance is a signal to everyone to cut me off), and don't get me started with the windshield wipers "randomizer." I actually think it was dead the moment they made it work without a radar. Just my opinion.

borgqueenx 2026-02-24 12:46

Thats not really fair as tesla did start out like that. They are still providing updates to old teslas. But deciding to stop updating autopilot is just sad and greedy.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 14:49

Don't be naive....it's business.....stuff like that happens all the time on the whole damn planet. Things that were once supported no longer are....remember Windows 10??

borgqueenx 2026-02-24 14:52

Its a almost a literal copy paste to make autopilot better and safer. They refuse it because they want people to buy a fsd package that people then dont even all want. Buying fsd isnt going to give you a better autopilot. Lots of people dont want the car to drive itself but do want cruise control and/or autosteer. Because of this tesla descision, every other car with adaptive cruise will beat tesla, except maybe the oldest with this tech, because tesla shows the desperation to get extra money.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 14:56

OK.....what model/year Tesla do you own?? How does TACC work for you in your Tesla??

borgqueenx 2026-02-24 15:10

I dont have one yet but its the argument why i might not buy one. This sub and other places are full of people who say its jerky and can brake suddenly compared to fsd being smooth at the same task...except fsd wont do autopilot. It does everything or nothing. I love the car otherwise but adaptive cruise is the most important feature there is for me.

smilingbudd 2026-02-24 15:45

Can confirm Autosteer is jerky and weird and now they won't update it as they removed it. So my M3 2024 Autosteer will never improve from now on. This is why I am moving away from this brand. There are other EVs to choose from.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 15:47

OK.....your homework is a bit off. There are (were) three levels of driving automation on a Tesla.....TACC (Traffic Aware Cruise Control), Autopilot, and FSD. TACC is the very adaptive cruise control that you say is the most important feature for you and Tesla still includes that in their new cars. I use it every time I drive our MY.....I still have Autopilot but don't use it....I've used both but TACC just works better for me. I also tried FSD and it is amazing...but I just don't need it. This whole "oooo, they're not including Autopilot on new Teslas any more" may be because the cars are telling the mother ship that there are a shit ton of people like me that don't use it and use TACC instead. Careful what you read on some of these subs.....there are a lot of Chicken Littles, many who have never parked their butt in a M3 or MY.....TACC is adaptive cruise control. You will friggin' love a M3 or MY....get the current refreshes if you can swing it...they're a whole new ball game.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 18:24

Do you use TACC when you drive your Tesla??

StartledPelican 2026-02-24 18:27

Sometimes. I tend to use Autosteer (TACC + lane keeping) for highway driving around my home. When we do longer road trips, I usually subscribe to FSD for a month. Even though I have HW3, it works quite well.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-24 18:51

I use TACC for every day driving (I use it a lot....)......think about a short-term FSD subscription for long road trips. TACC works just fine....I was never a fan of Autosteer (too quirky) which, I suspect, is common once you get outside the Reddit bubble.
