Just bought this 2018 Model S 75D with 79,000 miles for $18,200. Felt like a very good deal. Agree?

Sam3323 | 2026-02-21 02:53 | 340 views

Absolutely love this thing. First EV, coming from a 2011 3 series BMW. Night and day from the Beamer.

great deal, from where?

Good deal; I’m picking up my 2020 MS LR+ with 83k miles for 26k, tomorrow!!!

brianWM 2026-02-21 02:59

I’d say so. My 18’ MP3 with almost 90k just sold on trade in for 16.

What did you get?

Washingtonian16 2026-02-21 03:12

Just curious how much does typical insurance run on these second hand yet premium vehicles.

Itsnotadrone 2026-02-21 03:13

Yes!

TheTrollMaster5 2026-02-21 03:21

Get back to us when you gotta buy a $30,000 battery next year.

earnestlikehemingway 2026-02-21 03:28

Did you have FSD? And do you trade in at Tesla. I assume you meant 16k

Leading-Eye-1979 2026-02-21 03:28

That’s a good deal. I love the black. I probably would have recommended the 100D but I drove a 75D X in many trips and it just required a few more extra stops. If you’re not in a cold climate you’ll be fine.

chfp 2026-02-21 03:33

Are you smokin crack? A 75 kWh pack costs $9k, plus a few grand for labor. [https://greentecauto.com/comprehensive-guide-to-tesla-model-s-battery-replacement/](https://greentecauto.com/comprehensive-guide-to-tesla-model-s-battery-replacement/) Besides, that pack will last 300k mi or more.

kungfuninjajedi 2026-02-21 03:35

Dumb comment adding no value to the conversation

Finmail 2026-02-21 03:38

VIA tesla insurance my M3P IS 140 with some extra built into the limit policy. It really depends what state, and what insurance. Statefarm was just as cheap but with lower limits. IMO it’s not insurance that’s the most surprising, it’s the registration

This gen of the Model S is the best imo. A true luxury experience

bichicagoguy 2026-02-21 03:46

A truly great car that will make you smile daily. I went from a 3 series to a 2016 S

bighead0424 2026-02-21 03:48

You are going to love it. I've had my 2017 model s 75D for 6 years now and get excited every time I walk up to my car

DickSplodin 2026-02-21 03:58

Still rocking my 15' 85D from like five years ago. That FUSC makes it hard to move on from though lol

FineNeedleworker9964 2026-02-21 04:03

Totally agree- I have owned every model from 2019-2023 except for the Cyber. But a 2017 model S P100 D for 30 K with only 36,000 miles in January. Husband had a 22 model S plaid and let me tell you can definitely tell a difference in the quality of craftsmanship that was being done before they went to mass production. Even my 23 model X plaid that I owned prior to that was no comparison in quality to the 2017 model. In case you’re wondering why I went from a model X back to the model S 2017, unfortunately I traded my model X in for an Audi ISQ8 ETron last year and had it bought back as a lemon. For reliability, I went back to Tesla. However, I refused to buy anything new from Tesla for my own personal reasons and because of the huge depreciation of the new models.

imacleopard 2026-02-21 04:05

$379 in Texas, full coverage, $500 deductible, I forget limits but there not jaw dropping, over >30 age

imacleopard 2026-02-21 04:06

I don’t think this is a great deal. For those that think so, does anyone wanna buy my ‘18 100D for this amount-ish money? 120K miles

I have the same exact car (w/cream interior). Absolutely love mine. Other than a couple of door handle modules and headlights due to fade of drl it’s been rock solid. Still have original 12v battery. Just coming up on 135,000m.

somethingClever246 2026-02-21 10:35

Good deal, drive it until the battery fails and scrap it, you got your monies worth

AlwaysStayHumble 2026-02-21 10:58

What the hell 26k for a 2020? That’s crazy

AlwaysStayHumble 2026-02-21 11:02

Basic AP from 2015 is still better than 98% of the cars on the road.

AlwaysStayHumble 2026-02-21 11:03

Excellent choice.

Lucky7366 2026-02-21 11:09

NoMansWarmApplePie 2026-02-21 11:23

How's the maintenence? I already bought my model 3 recently. But I did see a 2017 model S for like 17k at one point I was very tempted.

pikaboo16 2026-02-21 11:45

I have a 2017 model s 75D with 116k miles. It’s still drives like new. Just amazing.

WangtaWang 2026-02-21 11:56

What years are best before they went mass production?

Independent_Ad_4271 2026-02-21 12:05

My 2018 battery was ok - I had it from 2019 till just this past fall and trade it for a used 2024 and got 15k - had about 72k miles. Bms system blew and stranded me at the supercharger. Had to fly back as I was on a road trip to pick it up $800 later not counting airfare. But the battery was fine, under warranty till 100k miles, bms not so much

obxtalldude 2026-02-21 12:12

It's pretty good with the 75d. Main issue seems to be with rear wheel drive Large Drive Unit cars that need a "coolant delete", as they can get a leak that will destroy the motor. Edit - to be clear, only RWD cars had the LDU.

bighead0424 2026-02-21 12:15

It seems to be random things that pop up that need service which has been consistent since I've owned the car. No signs of getting more costly to maintain like an ICE vehicle. Bought in sept 2019, currently has 138k miles. Service record details below. Spent a total of $2414 on non-elective work with Tesla over 6 years. Plus tires about every 3 years. 2020 12V battery replaced (car notification). Under warranty, mobile service $0 2021 Jan: Left Scroll wheel dislodged, replaced. Mobile service. $272 Aug: left tail light out, replaced, service center $344, 2022: Feb: service center. Free HW 3.0 upgrade plus infotainment upgrade (mcu2) $1500 (elective) Apr: mcu2 touchscreen adjustment, service center $0 July: rear passenger window not operational, regulator replaced. Mobile service, $330 2023: Apr: service center. car notification low coolant, schedule service. radiator coolant leak, radiator replaced, $650 2024 Nov: all mobile service 12v battery (based on car notification) replaced, $234 Rear passenger Door handle would not present. Handle system replaced. $383 Colored Cap of side mirror had paint chip. Replaced cap, $202 2025 Profuse replacement needed based on car notification, service center, $0

BMW dealership around Philly

Sam3323 2026-02-21 12:24

Mines $181 per month full coverage. More than doubled from my 2011 3 series.

Blazah 2026-02-21 12:30

Hope to find the same when my lease is up, even if you have to replace the battery it's still a great deal for a car these days, let alone one of the fastest on the road!

Sam3323 2026-02-21 12:30

Yeah I'm around Philly but think I'll never go over 100 miles in a day, as long as the wife keeps her Mazda. So far 120v charging (lvl 1?) gets me back to 80% every morning after my driving so I'm not too worried about battery size or range. We'll see how it goes though.

Sam3323 2026-02-21 12:33

41k more miles is a big difference. Probably around the $15k range from private seller.

Sam3323 2026-02-21 12:34

You think replacing the battery at ~130k wouldn't be worth it if the car is in good shape?

Sam3323 2026-02-21 12:35

I'm rarely driving more than 50 miles in a day so range is the last thing on my mind.

cjeremy 2026-02-21 12:58

seems crazy cheap. wonder why

Collapsosaur 2026-02-21 13:07

Yes. Now replace the .medallion with a Borg one.

Talnoy 2026-02-21 13:49

75D Doesn't have this - only performance variants did.

Talnoy 2026-02-21 13:49

Holy crap original 12v!? Awesome :)

Sam3323 2026-02-21 13:50

KBB trade in on it is around $15k. Clean car fax.

Talnoy 2026-02-21 13:51

With that kind of predictive power, your crystal ball should tell you stock market positions to take xD

obxtalldude 2026-02-21 13:53

The 75 does - I have it. RWD only cars got the LDU.

Talnoy 2026-02-21 13:54

Exactly - NOT the 75D.

trustfundkidpdx 2026-02-21 13:55

OP, buy a third party battery & motor warranty. Beautiful car.

obxtalldude 2026-02-21 13:58

Yes? That was my original point in saying the 75d was good?

Winter-Crew-2746 2026-02-21 14:06

That thing will last you longer than a brand new $50k car I can assure you that

DFR1688 2026-02-21 14:19

I didn’t have that experience in my 2017 75D. It would barely make 130 miles highway on a full charge. Wish I did have a battery that lasted because I loved that car… one of the very last ones to still have the sunroof, and I had that thing open almost every day over the summer.

bigantone88 2026-02-21 14:22

If you like it then don’t worry what other people think! Especially on here lol

Sam3323 2026-02-21 14:22

That's interesting, I'll look into it. I'm seeing the prices of new motors could be 8-15 grand. So good thought.

vulcan_on_earth 2026-02-21 14:22

Does that include free supercharging

jeeimuzu 2026-02-21 14:22

Mayne i wish i had that kind of deal. Bought mine 2 years ago with 50k miles and fsd for 27k. Now i feel ripped off

quantgorithm 2026-02-21 14:24

This is wrong. All “P” variants have it as well. The “D” variants without being performance “P” do not have it. All versions not being either P or D do have it.

trustfundkidpdx 2026-02-21 14:26

I’ve owned over 10 teslas. I’ve been in this and every other group since the beginning. The #1 thing I hate to see with new owners who start off with an out of warranty car is the when the battery or motor goes out they come and post how much they hate tesla when it was completely avoidable from the beginning if they bought third party warranty. Safe driving & enjoy!

earnestlikehemingway 2026-02-21 14:30

It’s not obvious when you say you sold on trade. The wording is weird. People would say I got a trade in value , I traded it for, or I got X as a trade in.

FLawless______ 2026-02-21 14:30

Pre-owned 2020 performance with 90k miles is all tesla has in preowned inventory and it’s listed at 33k. Tesla imo prices higher and strips FSD. The one positive to getting it from them is the added free warranty

FLawless______ 2026-02-21 14:31

? What do you expect the cost to be?

AlwaysStayHumble 2026-02-21 14:34

Depends on the market. Are you from the US? I believe in Europe, a similar example (Raven) sell around 30.

aenima1991 2026-02-21 14:46

So you think it’s possible he meant $16.00? Cmon dog. What else could it mean

Infinite-Cycle2626 2026-02-21 14:53

What range are you getting?

Anichyaamonk 2026-02-21 14:59

Wow! Congratulations and welcome to Tesla family! Where did you start looking for such deal?

Birdboy7 2026-02-21 15:00

Yes that’s a good deal. Teslas last a long time. Only thing to change ages the tires.

Optimal_Rough8770 2026-02-21 15:03

It has another 200,000 miles on it, so, yes!

JeffTAC4 2026-02-21 15:13

2016

aenima1991 2026-02-21 15:22

Look at the context of his comment and what OP said

atxer 2026-02-21 16:04

Same! Just got the air suspension adjusted and it just rides like new now. Probably go another 10 years.

atxer 2026-02-21 16:04

About 210 miles on a full charge

atxer 2026-02-21 16:05

Ouch I'm still getting 210 on my 2016 MS.

FLawless______ 2026-02-21 16:28

Ahh yes US. 30k is what im seeing many at now, everything priced under 27k sold in days. I asked for this one to be put on hold; I had 5x black model S in my watch list they all sold before the listings aged 1 month

Quin1617 2026-02-21 16:56

As much as I love the Model S, I don’t think I could talk myself into paying $18k for an 8 year old car.

Shran_MD 2026-02-21 17:11

Pretty :)

imacleopard 2026-02-21 17:16

Bigger battery than the 75D, almost certainly more range at 100%. 88% battery health.

imacleopard 2026-02-21 17:17

Thanks grammar police

curiuskinkycouple 2026-02-21 17:21

No 2018 didn’t come with free supercharging. I purchased a 2016 model S 75, with 71,000 miles and free supercharging for $19,500 in California 4 months ago.

DFR1688 2026-02-21 17:44

Wow! That’s incredible. I had to switch to a 2021 MS because I was tired of constantly thinking about the battery on the old car.

tomjava 2026-02-21 18:09

Make sure you go to your mechanic to check car suspension and replace all liquids.

RealTrapShed 2026-02-21 18:27

2018 was a good year for the Model S. I owned a few and they were all rock solid.

TheHumbleMarksman 2026-02-21 18:47

No. Probably not. A buddy just bought a 17 in the same ballpark. Within a week the air suspension went out (+4k). Within 3 months the HV battery went out. (+14k). The car was about 2 months outside the warranty period for any help on the HV.

Gaff1515 2026-02-21 19:11

Door handles air suspension and lot going south on model s

vulcan_on_earth 2026-02-21 19:11

Nice. What range are you getting?

-Canonical- 2026-02-21 19:56

"My 2018 Model 3 Performance with almost 90,000 just sold on trade in for 2016" ? Holy mother of reading comprehension.

rocketrex504 2026-02-21 20:29

I paid 20 for my M3P 2021 with 85k

CryptoEco 2026-02-21 21:02

M3 LR 21 plate 33kmiles around £17/£18k

Sam3323 2026-02-21 21:26

So that means the same thing is guaranteed to happen to me and because of that, it's a bad deal?

BYack 2026-02-21 22:57

I owned this exact car, but it with 33k miles and sold it with 104k miles, no major issues. Very well built car, still miss it. My lease is a 25 M3 which I like, but I miss the hatchback and extra space of the MS.

BYack 2026-02-21 22:59

Not a bad deal, but that is before the Raven drivetrain and adaptive suspension which are both really nice improvements. Also, 75D is a small pack, especially if you live in a cold climate.

Sam3323 2026-02-22 00:27

I hear ya. I ended up with this cause I couldn't talk myself into a 2020 with ~30k miles for $33k, so here I am. It's still such a massive improvement to my day to day driving, ok with the year. Guess I'm going to learn cost of ownership of a high mileage model s though.

Appropriate_Grab5221 2026-02-22 02:55

My 2016 Model 75 S with Enhanced Auto Pilot has Coil Suspension and Solid Roof purposely to avoid potential reliability issues. Coming up on 112k miles. I still get 212 miles on a full charge. Over the years I’ve upgraded to MCU2 which included HW3 computer. I’ve replaced the 12v battery twice along with tires and wiper blades. I’m finally changing the cabin air filter, lol. One issue that has recently come up is a faulty charge port door sensor but that’s been the extent of mechanical failure with the car. I went ahead and purchased FSD for $2K. Watch me drive this thing for at least another ten years 😇😍👍

Sam3323 2026-02-22 03:44

Great to hear! Seems random what things will break. Just need to avoid the motors or battery failing to avoid the big costs.

atxer 2026-02-22 04:23

Bummer. Hope you're enjoying the newer model.

Pelvis_Obliterator 2026-02-22 04:30

Just picked up my 2021 model Y performance 86k miles for 24 out the door. I absolutely love this car. Coming from a 350z. So much speed, so much room, thing’s a dream.

somethingClever246 2026-02-22 11:46

If the car is in good shape, I might spend $10-12k on another battery, it depends on what replacing the car with something similar might cost. IMHO

Source_YourMom 2026-02-22 15:27

Good question

VIPGENIUS 2026-02-22 15:41

I have the same exact car, same exact color... I LOVE IT!!!

NoMansWarmApplePie 2026-02-22 21:11

Thanks for run down

JesusSquared123 2026-02-23 19:24

You could have gotten an Ioniq 6 2024 SEL AWD with 0 miles for 26k…

DoctorKemp007 2026-02-23 21:27

Even if it does happen there are independent service centers that can help repair for a fraction. Carolina EV is a good one

FLawless______ 2026-02-23 21:27

No way id get an ioniq 🤣 too ugly for my taste. It’s also more comparable to a model 3, in which case I’d get a model 3. For my 2nd car I wanted more of an executive luxury cruising feel vs a strong daily commuter, albeit I will drive it daily short distances.

iSmiteTheIce 2026-02-24 14:25

I think I know some of those reasons, and if my guess is true then you're absolutely doing the right thing. Tesla Model S and X before the 2021 Palladium generations were, like we both said an agreed, an actual, luxury EV experience that's second to none, especially the Model S (the 2016-2020 gen is my favorite car of all time) It sucks Tessy decided to cheapen out in favor of more hp and a design even more minimalistic than Apple, and not in a good way. Even reviewers noted they managed to turn the GOAT of EVs (Model S) from the best to the worst EV. Also no stalks is asinine and an instant deal breaker. I currently have an EQB in my home country (we don't have official Tesla presence yet), and I regret getting it instead of importing a used Model S from the US for less. Everytime I go back to the US I rent Teslas, including the aforementioned, beloved Model S🌹 Note: my EQB is a double lemon (7, yes, SEVEN defects) yet my country doesn't have lemon law, so stuck with my lemon till 2029🥲 Germans should stick to ICE vehicles ngl Enjoy yours😁

SINHISTER 2026-02-25 18:59

Not good deal. I seen it for 15k

Sam3323 2026-02-25 19:21
