Tesla’s auto pilot change

Drad6493 | 2026-02-18 02:36 | 74 views

Is anyone else extremely disappointed with Tesla stance on autopilot? With all of these deals on interest rates I really wanted a model Y but there’s just no way that I would give up my model 3 with auto pilot to pay $100 a month. I’m really hoping that there’s a strong enough amount of people who feel the same way and they’ll reverse course because I don’t see myself ever buying another Tesla with this situation.

Speak with your wallet. It’s the best way for customers to force change

sparkyblaster 2026-02-18 02:41

Yeah, Tesla has turned into a company that squeezes and I'm done. Was looking at s used car and only FSD outright affects me, but, doesn't feel like I'd be buying a car I'd own.

Ok_Cake1283 2026-02-18 02:47

I am a huge Tesla supporter and I think this is a dumb play. Disappointing to not offer better features than a Honda Civic.

SuperSayainSkincare 2026-02-18 02:51

Yep next car is most likely not going to be a Tesla but tbh thats going to be a while cuz I just bought one 6 months ago.

probablyabot427 2026-02-18 02:52

Tesla had me do a 3 year owner survey and I made it clear I'll never buy another Tesla unless they bring back something like autopilot

free-creddit-report 2026-02-18 03:06

Massive fail on Tesla's part that will lose them sales to competitors. I like the company overall and my 2022 Model Y. I even think FSD is pretty cool. But getting another Tesla, which I thought I'd do within the next year or two, is a complete non-starter for me now. ADAS systems are pretty standard these days and this all-or-nothing $100/month approach is just plain stupid.

Askew123 2026-02-18 03:31

Yup - put off the MYP order for that reason. I don’t NEED a new car.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-18 03:34

Here is my guess as to the future. Tesla will sell something similar to Enhanced AutoPilot - basically FSD on highway for a one-time free, and then if puchased would lower the subscription for those who own it to $49/mointh. Tesla currently does that for those who have the legacy EAP purchased. They can subscribe for $49. Only a guess, but it seems interesting they lowered the price for EAP customers.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-18 03:38

Tesla's main competitors are Ford's Blue Cruise and GM's Super Cruise. Both of those are also paid upgrades/subscriptions. And no where near as good as FSD.

kgyre 2026-02-18 03:39

Everyone but Tesla. It's exemplary enshittification.

EatMeerkats 2026-02-18 03:41

Autosteer's main competitors are… basically every single other car. Lane centering is free on almost all of them.

HipHopGrandpa 2026-02-18 03:41

Couldn’t care less. I don’t lease or borrow for cars. Pay cash. FSD is the main reason I bought the car.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-18 03:43

Most of those can't hold a lane on winding highways and interstates.

kittysworld 2026-02-18 03:51

I don't care. Fsd is so much better. If I don't need fsd, id rather buy a different, much cheaper car. So the autopilot policy doesn't affect me.

EatMeerkats 2026-02-18 03:58

Autosteer is worse than these. You can't even change lanes on Autosteer without disabling it and then re-enabling it (unless you have FSD and can use the turn signal to request a lane change). Taking FSD out of the equation, something like BMW's Driver Assistance Professional Package is *much* better than Autosteer (I have both).

SiliconSentry 2026-02-18 04:24

I think the same

WindyNightmare 2026-02-18 04:35

Yeah. Going to buy an R2 instead.

FearTheClown5 2026-02-18 04:49

Yea, we went from 1 R2 reservation to 2 after this change.

TATA-box 2026-02-18 04:54

For someone that only owns cars it doesn’t bother you that you can’t buy FSD anymore?

storyinpictures 2026-02-18 05:42

My understanding is that Tesla’s hand was forced on taking out autopilot. Tesla did not have a choice. Legal action was taken against Tesla by California DMV and Tesla removed Autopilot from future purchases just ahead of the legal deadline. Once California won the lawsuit, I would guess Tesla was at similar risk in other states and decided to remove the risk. I don’t have any inside knowledge, so I can only speculate beyond mentioning the lawsuit and it’s deadline.

Queasy-Bed545 2026-02-18 05:51

Wasn’t that just because the bar was misleading? They could offer the same products with different names.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-18 05:54

BMW's [Driver Assistance Professional Package](https://www.google.com/search?q=Driver+Assistance+Professional+Package&sca_esv=fd1b7ca8ddeb381e&sxsrf=ANbL-n6hy6J0pJWpLEuASzwpYZhCx-y2ig%3A1771393962772&source=hp&ei=qlOVacDbLKm2qtsP9Ni_-AY&iflsig=AFdpzrgAAAAAaZVhuiOCIyhMJXoUiOgvprkpghWE5zDZ&ved=2ahUKEwiT0d3grOKSAxWwk2oFHRxZOOoQgK4QegQIARAD&uact=5&oq=BMW%27s+Driver+Assistance+Professional+Package&gs_lp=Egdnd3Mtd2l6IixCTVcncyBEcml2ZXIgQXNzaXN0YW5jZSBQcm9mZXNzaW9uYWwgUGFja2FnZTIHEAAYgAQYDTIHEAAYgAQYDTIGEAAYFhgeMgYQABgWGB4yBhAAGBYYHjIGEAAYFhgeMgYQABgWGB4yBhAAGBYYHjIGEAAYFhgeMgYQABgWGB5IvANQAFgAcAB4AJABAJgBWKABWKoBATG4AQPIAQD4AQL4AQGYAgGgAmyYAwCSBwMwLjGgB5EKsgcDMC4xuAdswgcDMy0xyAcQgAgA&sclient=gws-wiz) is an optional, high-level suite (often costing \~$2,000) that enables semi-autonomous, Level 2 driving. It combines Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, and Highway Assistant, allowing for hands-free driving on designated highways at speeds under 40-85 mph, depending on the model.

storyinpictures 2026-02-18 05:58

I don’t know all the details of the lawsuit. I just read a report about it. There is a lot of speculation going around on this topic and I haven’t seen anyone even mentioning the lawsuit.

U_dun_even_know 2026-02-18 06:01

Huge mistake to get rid of basic autopilot. Heck, charge $10/mo for it and I'd be more OK. But $100? Come on.

iebo531 2026-02-18 06:04

The sad truth is Tesla knows its future market won’t even know what those “older” teslas offered and will become the consumers that Tesla wants to be buying their cars. As for me, legacy Tesla owner from their early days prior to Model 3, I won’t be downgrading to the new teslas unless AP is standard.

NesCie0617 2026-02-18 07:45

We own 2 teslas, a 2025 civic, and a 2025 RAV4, auto steer with Tesla is way better than whatever shit they have on those other cars. Most specially the Civic.

boogi3woogie 2026-02-18 07:48

Yeah I’m driving my 2022 m3 to the ground before I upgrade.

GoSh4rks 2026-02-18 08:23

Neither can new teslas without fsd so I’m not sure what your point is.

grogi81 2026-02-18 08:26

Rename it to Tesla Cruise and voila.

Original-Material301 2026-02-18 08:33

I like my MY and I'm keeping it until the battery dies/wheels fall off and hopefully they'll have better offerings by the time I need to get a new car but nah, I'm not sticking with one brand if they're going down the enshitification route.

Mediocre_Paramedic22 2026-02-18 08:49

I think basically everyone is

JackfruitCrazy51 2026-02-18 11:21

Don't care, basic autopilot is junk. If you switch lanes, it turns off. How many times do you switch lanes while driving?

Nhonickman 2026-02-18 11:38

I agree 100%. They took tech leading features and make their cars a very questionable sell. Foolish. My guess is they will eventually reverse course but those you get cars now maybe left out in the cold

Nhonickman 2026-02-18 11:39

I love my tesla’s but to pay for basic tech now included as std tech features in other cars in other cars, not a good play. I would not be happy with $10/mo on principle

Natural_External5211 2026-02-18 11:52

I feel like it's a huge mistake. I was going to buy my wife a new MY in April as an anniversary gift. We have now decided to go with the EV6 entirely because of the feeling that Tesla is just trying to squeeze us for everything.

Scotty1928 2026-02-18 12:07

I have been auto-changing lanes on Autopilot for six years now. FSD is not a thing here. What are you on about?

U_dun_even_know 2026-02-18 14:12

True we shouldn't normalize subscriptions and corporate greed.

tmmoo 2026-02-18 14:21

Basic autopilot doesn’t have lane changing. If you do have auto lane changing, you have enhanced autopilot.

Scotty1928 2026-02-18 14:23

Enhanced Autopilot is still Autopilot stack and not FSD.

tmmoo 2026-02-18 14:26

The entire tread is talking about the basic autopilot. Not enhanced which obviously comes with more features that aligns it closer to FSD. Also, Enhanced is not available in every market.

free-creddit-report 2026-02-18 14:37

These are all equivalent systems to Autopilot, which do not require a monthly fee (on some cars they may require some kind of sensor package, but you're paying for the hardware- Tesla bakes that price into the car): - Toyota Safety Sense - Hyundai/Kia HDA - Honda Sensing - Ford CoPilot 360 (BlueCruise is hands free) - Subaru EyeSight Tesla trying to compete with these with just Traffic Aware Cruise Control is laughable. Especially since Tesla vehicles are supposed to be tech-forward.

UncertainOutcome 2026-02-18 14:40

Sorry, but they've made it very clear they're all-in on automation, to the point that they don't intend to design new models with steering wheels.

bluemeanie212 2026-02-18 14:58

I mean you already lose so much money if you decide to buy a brand new as you lose value instantly. Now you lose even more value cause of no AP when so many other cars have proper AP unlike Tesla now. I mean those other cars probably have 1 or 2 “I agree” buttons you have to tap every single time you get in the car. But at least they are mature enough vehicles to still have lane keep assist standard with their cruise control unlike Tesla’s lacking of AP now. Tesla likes to remove things. Major risk. You have to ask yourself if there’s still value for you, even though they remove features as their cars get more overpriced and federal incentives are a thing of the past. The “value” is declining IMO. Seriously would not lose all that ANd lose so much money on having to “have to have a new car” when you can get a used Tesla with more features and more bang for your buck. Why lose so much money and functionality?

rflo24 2026-02-18 15:00

yeah I think Tesla making a huge mistake with force feeding the FSD on its existing owners. I’m at a point in my 23 m3 that I don’t even want to complete the over the air updates anymore because with each one autopilot gets worse

PromiseComfortable61 2026-02-18 15:05

I've been feeling a lack of trust with Tesla for a while which is one reason why I got a Ford Mustang Mach E GT instead of a MY. Still love my MXP but they canceled the model so might be my last Tesla.

cgd53 2026-02-18 15:08

Tbh I would have not bought my MY last summer if I knew hmm this anti consumer behavior was going to happen. I cancelled my FSD sub and let them know my reason was this anti consumer garbage.

NurseDave8 2026-02-18 16:03

Just traded in my original style S for a new 3. I didn't like the idea of losing free supercharging, connectivity, homelink, and paying for FSD. It only took 5min of riding with FSD for me to be sold on it.

CaptCarlos 2026-02-18 17:29

I mean most people use it exclusively on the highway on long road stretches where you just stay on one lane, usually the far left. I think it’s actually a strength of AP over FSD because you know it will just stay in that lane and won’t try to pass over other cars eventually.

JackfruitCrazy51 2026-02-18 18:09

So camping in the passing lane, that's exactly what I expected.

vortec350 2026-02-18 20:30

Isn't Comma Four compatible with Teslas? For $1K you can get your Autopilot back. I see Model 3 and Modle Y HW4 listed on their site up to 2025. IDK about 2026 or 2027 model years, you'd have to do some research and see if it's the same, but I don't see why it wouldn't be.

Drad6493 2026-02-18 22:23

First time I’ve heard of comma four. Seems pretty cool, however, I think the biggest problem for me is the principle of it all. It just makes me not like the company so much. I may just wait on my Rivian R2

vortec350 2026-02-19 01:47

Yep, R2 is going to be awesome.

Freds_Premium 2026-02-19 02:10

People mention that "all cars have autopilot these days". Which ones 1.) work on all roads that have lines and 2.) are not geofenced to major highways? 3.) Come as standard on a $40,000 car.

Natural_External5211 2026-02-19 02:15

100% I have a 2023 M3 and love it but will almost certainly be my last Tesla.

ubiquitousgimp 2026-02-19 02:38

Don't worry, they'll keep making Autopilot worse until it's unusable.

[deleted] 2026-02-19 06:52

Every time I see a Mach E they’re riding my ass or screaming past me and cutting in front of me. There isn’t a Mach E made that’s faster than my car so I must assume that they just all hate Tesla. Idgaf more power to them but I’m getting tired of their idiocy.

CaptainFlamingo75 2026-02-21 14:40

Correct. I’m not paying $100/month for self driving. Include the software with the car, but I’m not playing the subscription game.

AethisRex 2026-02-22 09:30

Future people are going to buy Tesla primarily for their FSD and Elon knows it. The new version on hw4 is amazing. I actually bought the sub, its what I have been wanting.
