Tesla, please bring back the speed adjustment!

TeslaDuo | 2026-02-16 04:13 | 180 views

With previous versions of FSD, moving the right thumb wheel left or right changed the FSD mode and moving it up and down increased or decreased the speed. Now both movements do the same thing. That is so stupid; why eliminate a useful function? On Chill it goes 2 mph over the speed limit, on standard it goes 10 mph or more over the speed limit. If I want to go 5 mph over I can’t do it now. So frustrating.

Agree completely. Was on a 2200 mile roadtrip, and while FSD worked well for the most part - it was super annoying if the cameras missed a speed sign having to manipulate the speed.

Misophonic4000 2026-02-16 04:43

I want the ability to go at the speed I set while also minimizing lane changes, it's not rocket science

Moose-Turd 2026-02-16 04:45

Agreed. Some spots I'd like to go faster than chill with less lane changes that the standard or hurry profiles do. And passing in the slow lane... is a pet peeve of mine, even if I am yelling at the fast lane camper.

Going2beBANNEDanyway 2026-02-16 04:45

Mine is worse. Chill and standard both go under the speed limit. “Hurry” since last update is basically mad max where it’s just weaving in and out of lanes.

Malacasts 2026-02-16 04:46

Even V12 has speed adjustments - but it doesn't really respect it. You can have it set to 80 and it'll hover between 72-80 and not be consistent. EAP on the other hand will try its best to go max speed.

Going2beBANNEDanyway 2026-02-16 04:46

The funny thing is my 2018 M3 does that but my 2026 Y can’t. They’ve went backwards.

ippleing 2026-02-16 04:50

FSD picks the passing lane to cruise in at the pace of surrounding traffic...

Misophonic4000 2026-02-16 04:51

I have a Model S P100D and stuck on 12.6.4, which made FSD go from "pretty good 95% of the time" with the previous version to "terrifying and unusable" now. I keep having to go downgrade to Enhanced Autopilot to get a decent-enough highway assist... Not what I spent the big money on. Maddening.

MostlyDeferential 2026-02-16 04:56

This is a safety issue. FSD(s) is not catching speed limit changes nor is it updating speeds after turns so I'm still limited to 25 mph when turning onto an arterial with much higher speed limit for almost 2 blocks. Needless to say I have to turn off FSD(s) or hit "Mad Max" mode to avoid being rear-ended. Plus I travelled about 1600 miles a week ago, and it missed speed limit signs with dramatically different speeds on Highways, Interstates, and frontage roads which put me at risk of breaking the law. This needs to be put back so I can fully control my speed in FSD(s) soon.

The_Ironthrone 2026-02-16 04:56

I heard they are going to give you the ability for only $30/month.

ipokesnails 2026-02-16 05:01

It would be nice if you could enable/disable which basic road laws you want FSD to break: - On/Off - Tailgate - On/Off - Exceed the speed limit - On/Off - Exceed the speed limit in school/park zones - On/Off - Ignore speed signs that the display detects - On/Off - Stay in the left lane after passing - On/Off - Turn into the wrong lane on multi-lane roads - On/Off - Cut off cars to merge instead of using gaps between cars - On/Off - Drive the wrong way down one way roads - On/Off - Slam on the brakes when shadows or tire marks are on the road - On/Off - Swerve randomly when shadows or tire marks are on the road - On/Off - Make left turns when the left turn light is still red - On/Off - Drive on top of the lane lines instead of staying centered Because right now it just randomly and indiscriminately does all of these. Very few of these situations are one offs or complicated, either. They're either everyday scenarios that you can see are detected on the car's display, or mistakes that any reasonable and observant driver would never do. ^(2025 Model 3 Dual Motor Long Range)

namestom 2026-02-16 05:01

What’s maddening is the cameras see the sign but don’t adjust accordingly. My HW3 cars all act the same in the same spots but HW4 is capable of it. I don’t understand that. That’s my biggest complaint. If it would adjust speed according to the sign, I’d be fine.

Middle-Gas-6532 2026-02-16 05:11

Unless regulators force them to do something about it they won't do it. Elon is stubborn like that.

East_Yellow8389 2026-02-16 05:16

I want to go the speed of sound. I find it annoying it doesn't have that speed setting!! I mean what the fuxx did I get a plaid for anyways!! Not asking for the speed of light!!!

madman6000 2026-02-16 05:16

What you on about I like going 30 over with mad Max. 😂

baconreader9000 2026-02-16 05:21

Not going to happen

ncwv44b 2026-02-16 05:36

I don’t use it as much as I could only because it completely ignores my request for a damn speed.

FuckinHighGuy 2026-02-16 05:47

🤣🤣🤣

Lokon19 2026-02-16 05:48

the answer for the 99th time is no. they are not going to do it.

DevinOlsen 2026-02-16 06:19

Minimal lane changes did nothing when using FSD.

JoelJohnstone 2026-02-16 06:35

I agree 100%! It’s so stupid!

Misophonic4000 2026-02-16 07:03

Maybe not for you, but it was night and day for me on my previous version on HW3...

EarlVanDorn 2026-02-16 07:29

I agree most whole heartedly On most 65 roads, I want to go 71 or 72, no more, no less. Their radar is set to go wild at 75 to 77 degrees.

El_Gringo_Chingon 2026-02-16 07:37

You’re so right. I’m annoyed with the way it completely ignores speed signs that are clearly recognized. Either it wants to drive 10 under or 20 over the speed limit. So, induce road rage or get reckless driving ticket.

madsoul 2026-02-16 07:52

We definitely need fast chill

CowNervous4644 2026-02-16 09:40

This frustrates me too. The work around that I use is to first create a second profile and set it to use auto-steer (not FSD), Then when I'm on a drive where I want to **exactly** control the speed I change from profile1 to profile2. You can change profile without stopping but after you change you have to click out of auto mode and back into it. This trick works the other way too (from AS profile2 back to FSD profile1). But you have to remember that even if you have a route set the car will no longer automatically take exits and shift lanes to follow the route.

detroitsongbird 2026-02-16 10:10

Even worse. In the US FSD does a terrible job reading construction zone speed limits. Weirdly it works well in Canada. Anyway, I want the ability to drive under the speed limit on demand. The same with heavy rain, let me slow it down.

SolidDiarrhea 2026-02-16 10:14

I prefer autopilot which is being taken away 👎

Worried_Produce_1046 2026-02-16 11:17

Lol, this and many other reasons Im sticking to fsd 12! 🤣

Worried_Produce_1046 2026-02-16 11:18

Yep, on my 22, in hurry, it stays in the left lane , unless it NEEDS to pass... love it

RottenBananaCore 2026-02-16 11:52

I just want FSD to avoid potholes instead of aiming directly for them. I would pay an extra $10/mo for FSD to avoid potholes.

MysticMaven 2026-02-16 12:22

No. That should be car follow length. I’m so tired of tailgating everyone.

Blazah 2026-02-16 12:34

this 1000 dollar box called comma.ai does the same thing.. meanwhile the 8000 dollar version in a 2026 tesla cant.

Blazah 2026-02-16 12:36

If the speed sign isn't exactly where it's supposed to, my HW4 car will ignore the incorrectly placed signs about 90% of the time (too far from road, wrong side of road, smaller than normal, higher than normal, lower than normal placement)

Blazah 2026-02-16 12:37

the tail gaiting is annoying as all hell. Would LOVE a "no tailgate" mode. Part of why I'm still running a comma.ai in this car is because you can choose what you want it to do... exact distance from the car infront of you, it wont switch lanes like a crazy teenager.. etc etc.

Austinswill 2026-02-16 13:11

> but it doesn't really respect it. You can have it set to 80 and it'll hover between 72-80 The setting is a MAX speed.... if it is going slower there is a reason.

bjdraw 2026-02-16 13:36

Exactly. It hasn’t worked like cruise since EAP.

Aggravating-Gift-740 2026-02-16 13:44

I would go for a simple toggle: MassHole On/Off. maybe one additional option to automatically switch to MassHole mode when i cross the border.

namestom 2026-02-16 13:49

Interesting. When I had a HW4 car as a loaner a couple weeks ago, it adjusted accordingly in my usual route, which included a construction zone with tricky speed signs. It was great! And, the cherry on top…it pulled into my driveway, no problem. I don’t live in a neighborhood, but have a long asphalt drive. It worked great. Those 2 things had me Jonesin on a new HW4 car!

Blazah 2026-02-16 13:54

Yeah, I'm still happy to see how well it does work. It's just that it doesn't seem to realize that all speed signs will not look the same or be placed in the same spot.

namestom 2026-02-16 14:00

Gotcha. Well, I trust your experience more than my limited trial. I still use our FSD in both ours 95% of the time.

IBringTheHeat2 2026-02-16 14:58

Driving like a normal human :)

Malacasts 2026-02-16 16:06

5+ car lengths in front isn't a good reason, what it tends to do is match the cars speed to your right, which is improper You have to sometimes tap the accelerator to remind it "Hey! You're starting to drop WAY too low in speed"

majorjxp 2026-02-16 16:42

I just want three options and FSD would be incredible. - Speed limit set (bring it back) - Car follow distance (brink it back) - Lane change frequency limit

Head_Ship4359 2026-02-16 17:33

How do I change FSD mode with the right thumbwheel? On my German Y, I can use the right thumbwheel to change the speed up and down, and the right and left thumbwheels change the distance to the vehicle in front.

Mikedaman34 2026-02-16 18:39

Just got back from a small road trip and drove a Hyundai Palisade so we didn't have to worry about charging. I plugged in my speed and just went. Very little interaction and being able to set the follow distance, speed and active lane assist was great. I know when I hop back in my Tesla I'll use FSD but constantly have to babysit it since the speed profiles are all over the place. I would love to have this feature (back I guess since it was once an option from what I read) and be able to set the following distance.

TeslaDuo 2026-02-16 19:27

That is the way it once was in the US, then they changed the left and right to FSD mode instead of following distance, which wasn’t too bad. They later changed the up and down to do the same thing as left and right (eliminating the driving speed adjustment). That one I have a lot of heartburn with.

TeslaDuo 2026-02-16 19:29

I am with you 100%.

Kooch702 2026-02-17 06:11

Exactly this!

Head_Ship4359 2026-02-17 07:47

Yes, that sounds bad. I tend to drive very defensively when I'm just cruising to work. I keep a good distance and only go 4% over the speed limit, driving casually. My wife, on the other hand, is more "sporty." Sometimes he doesn't see a sign properly, and then it's good that I can increase my speed.

R5Jockey 2026-02-17 15:28

All I want is for autopilot to use the cabin camera to eliminate nags. I love the functionality of autopilot. I don’t want it randomly speeding up, slowing down, or changing lanes. Stay in this lane until I tell you otherwise, and go this speed unless there’s a car in front and you need to slow down.

Chesterumble 2026-02-18 02:53

I just got my Tesla today and tried fsd on my way home. Around 70 miles of hwy. This thing kinda sucks on the highway. I love it on normal roads, but the changing lanes for no reason, the variable speeds. I just want pretty much do the speed limit +5. And stick there Why isn’t this an option?

served24 2026-02-19 00:24

What was the reason why the removed it in the first place anyways?

Texmex865 2026-03-05 02:57

Chill dos the speed limit for me. Standard does 8-100 over. Hurry…..idk how much over it will go because I don’t want a ticket. Idk why they ever changed it to begin with. Nobody was complaining about it!!!!

RichCreamery 2026-03-05 05:33

For all the things that are great this is yet another one where I'm like, my girlfriend's 2019 Santa Fe has four easily toggleable levels for following distance. I was a commercial driving instructor for years; I am not comfortable with its following distance and simply want to adjust outward
