2019 M3P Trade in Question

NavyTim1991 | 2026-03-13 01:42 | 33 views

I am upgrading to new Tesla so I am curious if anyone can share their experience trading their old car in with Tesla. I have submitted mine to go towards a new car but debating if it is worth the hassle to sell it privately. It has only 37K miles and kept in good shape and has partial P>P>F in front. Only damage is scapes on rim from curb. Minimal has been done to it since I had it the past 5 years. \-Tesla replaced rear taillight assembly due to moisture (warranty) \-Tesla fixed my passenger seatbelt sensor and also did a “SBR” retrofit (warranty) \-Tesla replaced 12v battery \-Tesla replaced cabin filters \-I bought 4 new rubber 1 year ago, original OEM Overall. I felt like I have such good luck with the car compared to what I have seen from others, so I am sticking with Tesla. Technically it has been in an accident. A guy in a lifted diesel truck took his foot off the brake at a light and rolled into me, damaging the trunk. Damage was minor but Tesla authorized repair center said trunk had to be replaced, so everything needed was replaced with Tesla parts. The funny thing was after I got it back, the trunk was aligned better than it was originally lol. Since it would appear on a carfax, I went ahead and noted that when submitting the trade in offer via the app. I just want to see if anyone traded in through Tesla and if you feel like you got a descent deal. I thought there would be the tax advantage of only paying the difference on the trade in, but unfortunately CA does not do that.

Tesla usually pays the least compared to others like Carmax and Carvana. Do yourself a favor and get offers from them first. You’ll probably go that direction afterwards!

NavyTim1991 2026-03-13 02:34

Surprisingly that is not the case with mine, but Tesla made an automatic offer but I still had to submit pictures and waiting on final offer.

Right on good luck!

Get offers, then compare. It’s easier to make a decision once you have something to compare it to. I traded in cars for each Tesla I purchased. The first car was about $1500 more from Tesla than Carmax. The other was about $1000 less from Tesla compared to Carvana. Carmax was about $3000 lower. I mostly balanced out after two cars, I guess time will tell once I jump out of my M3P soon.

Tesla offered me 32K, while dealerships and carmax were giving me offers in the 32-36K range. However in some states trade ins actually reduce the amount of sales tax you have to pay assuming you buy another car at the same dealership, so in my case it would have actually been cheaper to take the lower trade in deal so I would only have to pay sales tax on a 26K car instead of a 58K one.

Yeah, I thought that because of previous state I lived in but unfortunately not CA. Plus no more EV incentives both federal and CA. CA has even done away with the HOV access for EVs.

What model are you switching to?

SuperSayainSkincare 2026-03-13 03:09

Yea I actually just canceled my TM3 Performance because I wanted to register it in a state I actually live in but since I go to school in California they told me to register it there. And I dont want to pay Cali's crazy high sales tax and registration and then pay my home states sales and registration tax when I move back in a few months.

Try bidbus.com Everything is online and they usually pay more than others. You get paid before they even pick up your car once you sell it. Dealers from all over bid on your car and the highest one wins. You wouldn’t have to sell it if you didn’t get a number your looking for either

R2

Tesla generally low balls you. Try getting multiple quotes like carvana, carmax, plug.vin and make your decision then. They all pretty much gave me higher quotes than Tesla within a few minutes. I ended up rejecting teslas offer and selling to carvana instead

OkAd1498 2026-03-13 04:39

Good for you! However, Tesla lowered my offer after seeing pictures I uploaded. I do have aftermarket wheels but carvana did not care. Carvana’s offer was still higher after taking into account sales tax reduction

DREW722 2026-03-13 04:49

Are you interested in selling it privately?

NavyTim1991 2026-03-13 05:40

Maybe, but right now I have to wait for delivery which they said will be 5 -7 weeks. Hoping less.

donrab87 2026-03-13 12:50

Tesla offered me 17K for my model 3, Carvana offered 22K.

anal_astronaut 2026-03-13 13:05

Wanna share the Tesla offer so we know the # to beat?

NavyTim1991 2026-03-13 15:05

Waiting on official offer after I sent pictures but initially $21,500. Carvana and Carmax was less. Looking at other options. Whole thing might be moot if they don’t deliver Truck in a timely matter and I have to resubmit all over again because the offer expired.

Just purchased a 2021 model 3, what’s the best way to look after these white seats? Yours look great

NavyTim1991 2026-03-14 01:37

I was worried about the white but it cleans up well. I used a product from “Chemical guys” I found on Amazon, they have glass, interior, and exterior cleaners. I also bought this steering wheel cover to match it. I like it but it will get dirty quick but wipes easy. Good luck! https://preview.redd.it/q2qju4xvzwog1.jpeg?width=1023&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=155cba409e8a35ea286617e0076db36b7307be51

You aren’t getting more than 21.5 ANYWHERE take that and run. Private party will be under 20k for sure

Amnsia 2026-03-14 16:44

Noted. Thanks

Suvi2k 2026-03-14 17:02

Is my state, different 3rd party companies(cavana and CarMax) offered a better value than the dealer by good margin. I tried receiving quotes multiple times in the same year because I wasn’t in a rush to sell a few cars, and I found the rates changed quite a bit between the two of them also. It would be a good idea to get free quotes from all of them whenever you decide to sell. Additionally, for some cars, selling privately is better.

anal_astronaut 2026-03-14 20:28

I was thinking in the low teens. 21k? Sell it to them today.

OldFargoan 2026-03-15 03:03

I got 20,300 for my 2019 M3P with 38k miles in September, in MN. It was mint. I could have gotten a little more but I was driving 200 miles away and it would have been a PITA to drive down, sell it and try to get an Uber or something to Tesla. Plus they do take some off for the tax with trades here.

OldFargoan 2026-03-15 03:07

Oh yeah, I was transferring FSD so I'd have had to get the new one first, then drive over and sell the old one, then get a ride back to the new one and then drive home.

Rich_Country7524 2026-03-15 12:29

Tesla just paid me 3k MORE than Carmax and Carvana, 3 weeks ago on my 21 Camry. My guess is Tesla probably pays the worst on Tesla trades because the car is nothing special to them, but the others will pay more of a premium.

Hey, I’ll jump in and say this, you have a beautiful vehicle. Just stunning. I just bought a used 2022 S plaid at a dealer and feel like I’ve got a great deal, and Tesla’s trade-in seems very fair based on the searches I performed. Good luck, and truly beautiful car.
