Solved issue with cabin noise (design flaw)

Own-Middle7549 | 2026-03-10 04:03 | 202 views

for Auto-moderator - I am not looking for a fix, the issue is already solved Model 3 Highland owner. Recently started hearing noise coming from the passenger side airvents. First thought - leaf fell through the slits and is stuck inside the fan, had a similar issue with another car before. Noise accelerated if I put the fans on high, so thought definitely something was wrong with the fan. Ordered a usb-c endoscope to check out the fan by sticking it into the air vent behind the panel in the footwell (below glovebox). Stuck there was a huge sticker that probably detached from the inner surface and got caught. I was able to pull it out thanks to the hook attachment on the endoscope. Saved me a trip to the service center and probably a few hundred bucks. Who designs cars like that is beyond me.

This is actually pretty cool. Nice that you were able to find it.

short_bus_genius 2026-03-10 04:15

Nice one!

Mind linking your scope? I have one but no hook on it.

lrggg 2026-03-10 04:30

Second. I swear I have the same issue in my car.

Thanks mate

Where did the sticker come from? Were you able to flatten it out and trace its origins?

Own-Middle7549 2026-03-10 04:58

it looks like two pieces of electrical tape - no markings on them. https://preview.redd.it/58y06754g5og1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6e462cc56eb42ddd1ba035afb7279b1a4284be73

lb0sa 2026-03-10 05:51

What’s the tape for?

sir_harro 2026-03-10 07:30

So you can hear the fan working.

voodoomu 2026-03-10 07:31

Blue tape is usually used in the factory to seal holes so debris doesn't enter that hole while its in the factory. It looks like that tape failed its job and so did the installer who connected the air vent. Maybe the clear tape had a similar purpose. Maybe the blue tape was shrink wrap and the clear tape was the place holder

Happened to me before as well pre-refresh model 3.

Very clever. My Highland has always had all sorts of random noises coming from the air vents and the b-pillar, among other places. It's bizarre to me that a company that puts as much thought into the tech as Tesla does designs a car whose interior is like a cheap plastic toy.

mrandr01d 2026-03-10 15:34

Were you able to find any that don't rely on an app? I want to plug it into my laptop as well.

Own-Middle7549 2026-03-10 15:48

I wasn’t looking for anything like that. Just grabbed the first usb-c phone one I saw on amazon

rominioo 2026-03-10 16:03

Oh my gosh!!!! ElonMusk what have you done?!

donrab87 2026-03-10 17:21

I have the same issue in my Model 3. Thought it was a leaf too. I asked the service tech during my tire rotation about it and he said there is a sticker that peels off and gets stuck. Very common. Crazy to see someone found and fixed because it's supposed to be difficult (prolly expensive at service center) to get out.

Own-Middle7549 2026-03-10 17:36

Thankfully the fan is not too deep. Disabled the AC and went into service mode just in case. Tbh the most difficult part is staying patient while you figure out how to control the scope inside

donrab87 2026-03-10 17:53

Make a video about to fix this. Just checked YouTube and couldn’t find anything.

Ford has a spec just for labels. It’s crazy what some requirements are related to legibility to adhesion, but it exists to avoid problems like this. That’s an advantage a “legacy” company has over Tesla. They learned the lesson decades ago related to quality and performance. Too bad they also have a lot of biases and baggage.

donrab87 2026-03-10 20:32

I actually just ordered the scope from the link you posted. Can you post of picture of where you entered the scope to get into the AC? Like where in the Tesla dash, and which side is that motor with the tape located. This has been driving me crazy for years when AC turns on.

Own-Middle7549 2026-03-10 21:06

Sure, I took pictures just now. You want to turn off the AC, get on the passenger side, set the seat as far back as you can and follow the pictures [here](https://imgur.com/a/lCjs6Gg). The panel in question is very easy to gently take off, clips are only on the top. Stick the scope where the red arrow is pointing. Tread carefully of course and I would be stoked if it helps.

Own-Middle7549 2026-03-10 23:21

another word of advice - if you see the sticker and it is in an unfavorable position inside the fan in respect to the scope, what worked for me was getting the snake out and briefly turning the AC on and off to let the fan spin. Do this a few times and one of them will be spot on.

Well done!

xylarr 2026-03-11 01:31

For electrical.

xylarr 2026-03-11 01:32

Which side is the passenger side? Right or left? For me, the passenger side is on the left. Edit: I see from the pics, it's the right side. It's the same panel you remove when doing a cabin filter replacement

Good work. You could be a doctor and perform colonoscopies!!

MaikyBlue 2026-03-11 22:57

Hola! Por saber cuáles pueden estar afectado, de qué fábrica salió tu coche?

Own-Middle7549 2026-03-11 23:29

Привет! Мою машину собрали в городе Фремонт, штат Калифорния

MaikyBlue 2026-03-12 06:45

El mío es de Shanghai. Creo que las unidades chinas no tienen ese problema, o al menos, no he visto ningún reporte nunca.

It should work with the camera app on your computer
