Mine's around $125/mo through State Farm. That's cheap compared to what I've seen some other people pay. 😬
From what I understand, while the 3 and Y aren't considered luxury vehicles... The repair costs are like luxury cars. Repairs are expensive, as well as having specialized labor needs and expensive parts.
I got into a minor accident back in October, wasn't at fault, so the other insurance paid for the repairs. The Tesla-certified body shop I went to, they told me that labor costs per hour are almost double compared to regular cars. ($79 vs $129 per hour)
The parts in my case, weren't that bad. It was the labor. What would have been a lil over $3k bill, ended up being around $5.5k instead.

2026-03-06 00:34
There are many definitions of the word "safe". Safe could mean, if you get in an accident, you walk away. "Safe" could mean you get in fewer accidents.
Insurance rates don't strictly relate to how safe a vehicle is. They correspond to how often and how expensive are claims associated with that vehicle.
Tesla's are more expensive than the average car and their repairs are more expensive. That will drive the premium up compared to an equally "safe" car.

Insurance is half the reason I no longer own a Tesla.
I bought a brand new 2024 at 23 years old, regular insurance companies were quoting me more than $300 a month. Tesla insurance started me out at $100, my first renewal was an almost 80% increase even though my score never dipped below a 94.
I now pay less insurance for two cars and two drivers that I did for just that model 3 lol
It’s worth noting my 40-something coworker pays less than $100 a month for a model X

One of the reasons why we got rid of the two Teslas (‘21 MSP and ‘24 MY) is that the insurance was just getting crazy. It was around $3000 per six months at its highest, and that’s with zero tickets and zero accidents age 35-45. Might think it’s the Model S, but the rates were something like 1700/1300 for the two.
When I switched to two Cadillac Optiqs, I ended up paying the same amount to insure both as I did to just insure the Model Y. One factor of the insurance cost was also what happens when you add kids to the plan as the cost was insane… even when not being a full-time driver.

I was paying about $130-$140 a month through State Farm. Then it shot up to over $200. I called and asked why and was told that all Tesla policies went up and the agent I spoke to said she hasn't seen any under $200. So I dropped them and got Tesla Insurance for $160. Insurance unfortunately is one of those things that is highly variable. I'm older, good record and apparently credit, multiple cars and a house. Each of those things I'm sure affects my rate.
As for Tesla's being more expensive, I priced out a same year Audi S5 and it was quoted about $50 more a month.

None. I don’t care. I refuse to pay for insurance, tags, toll fees, and so on. I got my car all cash. My tags are from 2020. I think my taxes cover enough of the government’s shenanigans. This is how I protest the corruption. Y’all should too.

Geez, reading this thread makes me realize Tesla owners get screwed over by insurance... My wife and I have 3 vehicles; a 2019 Audi etron EV, a 2017 Chevy Volt EREV and a 2019 Ford F150 and we pay only $190 a month for 100k/300k full coverage with Geico in CA.
We have a bunch discounts, good credit, no at fault accidents but had several small accidents that others were at fault for a while back.

I think the model Y is $1700 /yr and the Rivian is $1600.
I guess b/c I WFH and the Rivian might go 4k miles per year, if that, whereas the Tesla is more like 15k per year
