Here's something a little different from the usual posts on this sub.

drivingbackroads | 2026-03-03 04:23 | 253 views

Caught a deal on a shitbox 2020 M3P with FSD and modified it for the sole purpose of ripping twisty mountain roads discreetly and comfortably. Here's how it feels to drive it the way it was meant to be driven, and they way I believe it should've come out of the factory. See it in 4K: [https://youtu.be/q\_LudZg0b-A](https://youtu.be/q_LudZg0b-A) Mods: \- Rear seat bottom removed (most important for sweet inverter noises during acceleration and regen) \- MPP Sports Coilovers \- MPP Rear Camber Arms \- Whiteline spherical bearing in front lateral link \- Whiteline offset poly bushing in front compliance link \- Eagle F1 255/35r19 on 19x10 wheels Planned mods (in descending order of priority): \- MPP Page Mill big brake rotor \- Winmax W5 pads \- Front camber arms \- a whole lotta sound deadening/absorbing materials and highland door seals (this thing is an unsealed tin can compared to the Model Y) P.S. There's a clunk on rough roads coming from the front driver side right under the hood which I have been unable to find despite replacing the damper assemblies, all lower control arms and retorquing all the other nuts and bolts in and around the suspension. If anyone's had the same thing happen and managed to solve it, do let me know where that gremlin's hiding.

Nice driving! These cars are so much fun on some backroads.

Scary-Animator-5646 2026-03-03 19:07

Finally! Some real driving on this car sub. I love doing the same with my 2019 performance. It’s such a fun car to take into the canyons. Great video.

yawn9296 2026-03-03 19:07

Love taking my m3p through the canyons. What phone holder is that?

firewaller 2026-03-03 19:19

Is that the track mode interface on the main screen?

BootlegStreetlight 2026-03-03 19:31

Also want to know about the phone holder

ifyym 2026-03-03 19:32

Looks like a door handle holder, I have one similar in my 3 from tesstuff

TYO_HXC 2026-03-03 19:37

Yes.

Plastic-Coat9014 2026-03-03 20:33

Awesome! Thank for sharing 💯

jchin913 2026-03-03 21:03

How do you like the phone holder? Recommend?

DestroyerCB 2026-03-03 21:08

Nice to see all the comments here compared to the other subreddit :)

jaqueh 2026-03-03 21:25

Skyline!

Pliskin01 2026-03-03 21:27

Beautiful. Can’t wait to get back out into the Ozarks. Thanks for sharing!

MeasurementMother579 2026-03-03 21:56

That looks like a sweet road. I'd bomb that in my LR AWD if I was near there. On a side note though, I really wish there were a way we could "unlock" some of the performance screens/options even if we don't have a performance. Could be nice seeing track times, tire temps, and modifying traction control & AWD bias too.

GloomyCaregiver2494 2026-03-03 22:17

This was so satisfying thank you for sharing :)

drivingbackroads 2026-03-03 23:18

Best position for it IMO. Not a fan of the ones that attach to the screen as I sit pretty low and have short arms.

drivingbackroads 2026-03-03 23:19

If you have the 980 rear motor you can buy the ingenext ghost or teslogic pro to get a hacked version of track mode that lets you adjust all that stuff.

HoneyProfessional432 2026-03-04 00:00

North Carolina? I had some great fun in my 2020 M3P on several roads there over a 10 day period - awesome!

Mapkmaster 2026-03-04 00:07

Thanks. What was the second link?

This sub needs more videos of this car being driven!

Mapkmaster 2026-03-04 00:10

I’d hate to have to pull a moose test maneuver in this thing. =)

CAMMARMANN 2026-03-04 00:45

I truly do love driving the shit out of this car, and that’s coming from the batshit world of electric motorcycles to compromising on a car that could still give me the same 0-60 It’s hard to conceptualize that it’s now 4 tons and not 400lbs. I only have the dual motor long range with acceleration boost so I didn’t know what track mode looked like.

MeasurementMother579 2026-03-04 02:01

OH Nice.. Thanks for that. Now to google how to know if I have the 980 rear motor.

mrandr01d 2026-03-04 02:02

What do you do with regen when you're driving like this?

mrandr01d 2026-03-04 02:02

And how did you know you had the road to yourself?

stuffedbipolarbear 2026-03-04 02:12

Whats the camera setup?

DontDeleteMyReddit 2026-03-04 02:34

Ahhhh Hwy 9🥰

JesseTheNorris 2026-03-04 03:58

4 metric tons... Yes. 2 imperial tons. Don't fight the imperium.

wild-whorses 2026-03-04 05:12

I recognize the area, been awhile since I’ve driven highway 9. If you haven’t already, check out Moody Rd. it’s the only place that I, as the driver, made myself car sick.

camobiwon 2026-03-04 06:24

Sick! I love running canyons here in California with my friends. 2024 M3P for me, car handles really well on them even nearly stock.

teomatteo89 2026-03-04 10:12

Interested in this too, seems to have a good dynamic range!

Comfortable-Car-7298 2026-03-04 13:04

Curious, how hard are you pushing the car, looking at the g force graph you pull more cornering g’s? I got a pretty cheap 2020 m30 as well no fsd though, and I feel it’s way too fast for road use. I have not even touched anything performance oriented yet and where in my old car I hit 150-160kph when I knew noone is coming, with my tesla I got to 200 on an exploration run, I don’t even wanna know what it could do proper flat out. The car says I’m pulling .8-.9 gs in a corner and 1-1.1 gs acceleration and 1-1.2 gs deceleration peak. Curious what you do because this is way too fast for public roads. Fyi, remove or fold the lower rear seat cushion when going out for a run, you can hear the inverter work way more. I personally love hearing it whine when pushing it.

Comfortable-Car-7298 2026-03-04 13:06

I have the same one and I love it.

hanzololo 2026-03-04 15:35

Haha, the end got me!

drivingbackroads 2026-03-04 18:00

Pretty hard for the street at 7/10ths, but I wouldn't do the same thing in a stock car. First thing you need is wider grippier tires and second is a better suspension. I get same accel g's as you, but get 1.3-1.4 in corners and braking. The high power just means you need a little more throttle discipline, can't go flat out all the time. The rear seat delete was the first thing I did!

drivingbackroads 2026-03-04 18:02

Didn't know for sure at the time, but had a good idea of where traffic was and wasn't based on the scout run prior to this fast run.

drivingbackroads 2026-03-04 18:04

70% regen in track mode, which is about equivalent to regen outside of track mode.

AnOoglyBoogly 2026-03-04 20:08

My 2018 M3P was a real go kart until she was total’d 🥲

BoringIndividual4187 2026-03-04 23:58

can I ask what did you use to record this?

TheDIYFix 2026-03-06 17:54

I respect the back road video while staying inside the yellows. Too many vids like these showing people cross over yellows.

Confident-Smile-8029 2026-03-07 02:42

The clunk you’re describing is most likely one of the drive unit mounts.

drivingbackroads 2026-03-07 03:05

I actually found it, it was a worn top hat! Replacing it made the noise go away.
