Wow, that’s impressive. I was literally trying to decide if I need the Y for the space. This answers that question.
Yeah lots of space but I do wish the M3 had a hatch
Like playing Tetris
Two of my favorite things: Model3 and Costco.
Same here
Agreed! A hatch Model 3 would be my ideal car!
but isnt that the whole idea of Y? im driving 3 and im kinda regretting not getting a Y it's super expensive to chsnge car in Singapore 🥲 (4 times more expensive than US)
I much prefer the way the 3 drives to the Y. I can’t deny the extra space of the Y would be nice but it isn’t worth it over the loss of driving dynamics for me and the Model 3 has enough space for what I need - a hatch would just be icing on the cake. If they made the Model 3 with a hatch like the Model S, it would be the ideal car for me.
I’ve driven 3 Model 3s over the last 7 years and I’ve never thought “I wish I bought the Y. I need more space.” And I have two teenage boys and 3 dogs. When we’ve wanted more space to bring a huge tent and go camping with all 4 of us, I got a Thule cargo carrier for the roof. You can pack an absurd amount of things into a Model 3.
When we moved to a new house last time, we converted it to the “Teslaneta”, mix for Tesla and furgoneta (van in Spanish). It was incredibly capable
All fun and games till a box damages the seats 💺
I never got rid of my scion tc because it has a hatch. It's 21 years old and still going and I haul stuff with it a couple times a month.
There are a lot of big items you can't fit in a model 3.
Try fitting a toilet seat. I had a horrible time to make it fit in the rear seat. The back compartment was too tight
This is a great post. While I know the Y is bigger, whenever I see one up close or get a ride in one, it really doesn’t feel like much more space compared any SUV I’ve been in.
The Model S is basically a Model 3 hatch
The problem with the Model 3, that rear brace under the hat rack. That thing has prevented me from putting things in the car on more than one occasion. Heck, I had to dissemble something one time because my wife “had to have it.” A hatch is far superior in this regard. I miss our wagon due to this. I could fit so much because of that. Our Model X is great but I enjoy driving the Model 3 more because it’s so much smaller, light on its feet. If it bothers me too much, I’ll probable just grab a newer Model S for the hatch and better ride. The Model Y isn’t worth it to me.
Discontinued tho.
Yeah unfortunately :(
On one vacation my partner loaded up our Land Cruiser with provisions, coolers, gear, dogs to go to the mountains and stay at a cabin for the week. The rear trunk was full half way to the roof. The Land Cruiser broke down before she left town and I had to rescue her, limp the car home and unload everything and repack in the model 3. Everything fit utilizing the rear foot well, under trunk, and frunk. I was impressed and I don’t think the load had any effect on the range. The next year we packed up the model 3 again for the provisions, 1 dog, and 3 people. Great road trip car! Mine is a LFP pack and I have to charge more often but not a big deal.
Y is much slower and feels sluggier, also build quality isn't as good. Tons of rattling all over the place.
Or just order it online?
Saw you're first pic and I'm like "You're buying chairs... Instead of a model Y? 🤨"
Hell yeah. Right. I am a firefighter and have lots of gear. At times I have to go to another station. Not only am I able to load all my gear (including my special operations gear) bedding , toiletries, food and my normal crap I take for a shift with no issues. Plenty of room. Love my 3LR. Oh bonus, I charge for free at work.
How do you put the dogs in? Dogs are my main use case pointing me away from the 3 because I find putting dogs in the boot of a hatch is the best for everybody.
We have a seat cover/hammock-looking thing, and we put it in the Model 3 back seat, or in my wife’s Volvo EV’s backseat if they get in that car. They’re never in the boot (but I know that’s a thing a lot of people do).
I swear I had no idea the seats laid down in the back. How did I not know this?
I have a truck that handles what the 3 wont cargo wise. I just hate driving it compared to my 3. Id also add that you only probably haul a few times a year but I drive most days. If I could only have one vehicle it would definately be my 3.
I have 1 dog, 1baby and a wife and I’m frequently needing the extra space and legroom the Model Y has even though im always in full Tetris mode. It’s literally 3x the cargo room in the trunk and 2x the space with the rear seats folded. and we always need the extra space for roadtrips or even the costco run we do every few weeks. the space improvements are phenomenal especially considering the car is only 2 inches wider and longer. The range also is hardly impacted at all for the bigger size
It's where I get my tires, too :D
I believe you, and am glad you have the Y, then. I admit I get annoyed when people are like “I’m having a kid. I need to sell my Model S because we need more space” (I’ve had two male friends say this, both had the Model S), because I cannot imagine why people claim they need so much space with one or two kids. I had two little boys in a Kia Optima, then a Honda Fit, then my few Model 3s, and there were never issues. Maybe I just take less stuff than most people? Admittedly we also don’t shop at Costco, and have groceries delivered, and have her Volvo EX40 EV if we were ever to need more space. But we take the 3 when we road trip, even if it’s all 4 of us, and admittedly we pack it full, but we’ve never had to leave something behind from not having enough space.
It's a Tesla not a Rolls Royce
I was able to put a 55 inch tv from Costco in my car! I was so excited when it fit
I think that SUVs and hatchbacks are a little bit overrated. 90% of people will be fine with just just a sedan and a trunk. One benefit of a sedan with a truck that people never mentioned is that the separation between the trunk and the interior passenger space helps a lot in reducing road noise. And let's be honest, most people won't be calling a 70 inch TV around multiple times per week. So they won't really need a huge SUV or truck. If you're actually hauling a lot of people around and minivan is way more practical and efficient
Just went out of town with the family this weekend. We were near the Mall of America and an Outlet mall. The only trouble was the trunk was packed full. I actually had to shove the suitcases to let the trunk shut. The family was bummed we had no room for any fun stuff, but I remembered the Frunk. I ended up getting a few pairs of Levi's for $14.99 ea and my wife and daughter found some things also. M3P did it all and saved us money over the wife's hybrid Sienna. The van gets a lot of miles so it was nice to be able to give it a break.
I always thought the S had a trunk and was recently corrected. If I had known that initially I might have a used S instead of the M3P. I'm afraid to ask if the S has a rear wiper. I love a hatch and a rear wiper.
Only problem I have with my model 3 is the trunk opening being so narrow
I was worried about space but it's been really good. Never had anything not fit. Even when we bought a desk for my son's room (from ikea). Also easier to keep cabin temperatures stable in summer instead of losing all the ac air out the back.
Not really. I have both. The S is much larger than the 3. Maybe not on paper, but in feel and driving dynamics, and you feel every inch of that size. I prefer driving my 3 over both the S's I've owned. It's a tighter, better handling, more responsive chassis/vehicle. If the 3 had a hatch like the S does, it'd be perfect, IMO.
No rear wiper.
If it fits, it ships. If it doesn't fit the M3, use a truck. If it doesn't fit the truck, use a trailer.
May subconsciously be thinking Lexus which has no fold down rear seats.
Or you could get this: https://preview.redd.it/tuxv9ijtenmg1.png?width=450&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac3c5576c2c66869919a9014cc7556a9d23e8731
I hope you bought Costco sized Preparation H for after loading those up.
Yeah that likely has a lot to do with it. We also do stuff like go camping, roadtrip to other states, and i have a small Wood and metal workshop in my garage. I actually do like the Model 3. If it works for you that’s awesome. I’ve definitely considered one as second car that is a bit more zippy and agile for when the kids are not in the car.
Damn are they already stocking these in stores? Were they on sale? Missed out 2 years ago on their store sale and last year I’m almost certain they skipped it altogether. Hoping to grab 5 on sale this year.
Yep $129.00 and Made in America! Great quality too.
Hope you measured and did the math first. I've seen many a Tesla in front of my Costco trying to cram a TV in that is obviously not going to fit no matter how you orient it
Yes, I agree. You can fit lots of smallish things, but try fitting a full size cooler or large square box. Nope.
Thats an interesting mod!
I just got a 3 on order and I have one toddler. Was worried about space but went to view a 3 and realised the boot is still so spacious. I’d rather save the money to be honest. I am coming from a Kia soul, though. 😅
