The phone key not always being reliable could be because you don’t have the Tesla app running in the background. And the usb drive being unreadable means that it hasn’t been properly configured

2026-02-15 22:40
I do keep the Tesla app open in the background, I do however close the app and reopen it when phone key misses. Or I’ll toggle off and on Bluetooth.
The thing about the USB drive I should’ve specified is that it becomes unreadable as soon as the glove box is closed. When it’s inserted, dashcam is active and working. Then before the glove box can even fully close, something disengages and it displays please insert USB drive. I have Tesla looking at it next week. Getting a little cold feet in my second month

Do you have permissions enabled in your phones settings for the Tesla app? Go to settings > apps > tesla > then turn on Bluetooth and location permissions to always on. Then make sure your Bluetooth settings for your phone is also on. That should make your phone key work.
After researching this issue, you could do some troubleshooting yourself. Unplug the USB drive, then hard reboot the car by holding down both steering wheel buttons until the screen turns black and then the Tesla logo pops up and once the screen goes back to normal plug in the usb drive again. If that doesn’t work, then check the connection of the USB drive to the port. If it feels loose and it’s not firmly connected it could’ve been damaged by items in the glovebox or it has just worn out over time. Your car is a 2023 so it should be under warranty so if it is truly a hardware issue, best thing to do is to take it to a service center to get it checked out and if there’s something wrong it should be covered under warranty

Yeah definitely that’s what I’m banking on. I did perform a soft reset and a hard reset by holding down the break pad but the issue persisted. I also bought a Samsung USB drive and formatted it but no luck

It probably is just the USB port then. Book an appointment with the service center and it shouldn’t take that long for them to fix it. And with the basic warranty still on your car it shouldn’t cost you anything. And in the future limit the amount of things that are put in the glovebox to only a few things. An item could be hitting the USB drive or pushing it further into the port that could be causing the damage (although Tesla didn’t really think it through with the location of the USB port, it should be moved somewhere else)

I have an android. Only one time it got disconnected for some very odd reason and wouldn't connect back. I had to uninstall and reinstall the app and set up the key again. Other than that, it's been smooth.

Congrats. I have the same car in dark silver (the free metallic gray color) and have really loved it. My lease is up at the end of the year and I'm figuring out which Tesla to ugrade to. Though I am also considering a used Model S as well. And, yeah, like others have said, I would make a service center appointment to get the USB port figured out. Sentry mode and it's ability to record an accident are great. Enjoy the new ride!

There will always be rock chips on used cars, some have less and some have more you just have to check when you buy it.

I guess it depends. But a few of my friends with Samsung always had issues with the car opening right away. One of them even gave up and started using key card.
Maybe they fixed this issue because I noticed this about 2 years ago

Agreed, even brand new cars sometimes are delivered with rock ships or they’re delivered perfectly and your first drive home. You get one, part of life owning a car, PPF is cool but very expensive and doesn’t add any resale value and protects against most, but not everything in terms of chips.

I have limited miles but normal paint hold up. My 2020 didn't have anything wrong at 20k miles.
My 2023 doesn't have any at 5k.
I don't have a lot of miles, but they are windy backwoods roads, and such. Both blue paint.

2026-02-16 06:22
Yeah, a lot of it happens on highway type roads, but in the northeast this year the salt and snow was a bitch, have a couple chips on a car with 3K miles. They’re not really that bad touchup will make them pretty much invisible, but annoying with the new model three but that’s why I refuse to pay for any other paint color because their paint is shit and the first couple chips always hurt

2026-02-16 07:35
I know I did. They were painted over with touch a paint but it didn’t really help. Can the chipping be avoided just by applying some extra finish of wax?
Lebrongains27

No only ppf but ppf is hella expensive plus it won’t protect against every single chip
Also doesn’t add resale value but if you have extra money it’s good to add

I’d put some PPF on the lower rear quarter panel. The lower area behind rear doors. That area will take a lot of hits from rocks. Without any PPF, it will get peppered with stone chips.

Rock chips are overrated. It's car. It lives its life outside. It's going to get dirty, it's going to get chips. It's not a rocketship.
