Yes, you can. And no it's not complex.

Get a local shop to do it They will likely place it in the side trunk area (idk what it’s called) or sub trunk. Then wire controls to the drivers seat along the inside of the drivers side doors You can get speaker unlock too, as the car comes with installed but unwired speakers from factory. You can wire these as well With a sub and speaker unlock the music is amazing Cost me about 1.2-3k in CA

With that extra cost might as well gotten a premium 🙄

Away-Scar7754 2026-02-15 05:11

What year do you have

CJdawg_314 2026-02-15 06:14

A premium is typically 5k + when ur buying new at the minimum so its not worth it just to get the premium for audio

CJdawg_314 2026-02-15 06:14

Yes did a full install for 500 ish

Check out this video, "" https://share.google/0adNwlXun0PY0e8zx It will show you how to unlock speakers.

2k gap for oem 15 speaker 2 subs, by paying 3k for aftermarket parts and labor. Trivial reason to have your car taken apart and poked around in

CJdawg_314 2026-02-15 14:18

Depends what you do, and sure you could look at it like that. The upside is you can put it much better hardware yourself and have full tuning control as well doing your own setup. If you care enough it’s worth it. If you don’t care then it’s not worth it like many things. Not to mention the new subwoofer setup implementation is abysmal coming from the old setup but that’s another issue lol.

The default audio configs in the refresh models Y n 3 are better than practically every luxury car out there. What are you a child?

CJdawg_314 2026-02-15 14:31

Not sure why you’re getting upset lol. I can tell you exactly what the problem is. The infinite baffle setup especially in the new model 3 is a disaster. The old one had amazing extension down to 25hz and no matter how you played with the EQ, and what content you put on the subs never sounded poorly executed. It was a masterpiece. They were able to get so much about of an 8 inch driven in a small ported box on just 160 watts. The new setup, if you bump up the EQ, turn the volume loud of enough, or play the right(or wrong) content can make the subs sound like they are bottoming out, or it just sounds like a bloated mess. Not to mention is no longer has the low end <35hz capabilities it used to have. The model Y is mostly good since it keeps the old subwoofer setup. Even then all Tesla systems struggle with imaging. It’s not bad by any means but it’s also not impressive. Speakers are easy to localize, and vocals especially don’t carry the presence I’ve experienced in some other cars. To be fair to the Tesla it does have one of the best audio systems in its price and it nails all the fundamentals. It is not the best, don’t take it personally.

That’s a terrible video, in quality alone.

Away-Scar7754 2026-02-15 16:52

Thanks for your helpful input. I didn’t produce it, so not offended. And OP can use it to find others.

ExpressAd3968 2026-02-15 20:28

You just lost with that last sentence

locksmack 2026-02-15 21:10

Yep it’s doable. Here’s an excellent step by step blog post. It’s RHD but should be easy to use for LHD too. https://tonyholdgate.wordpress.com/2020/12/20/tesla-model-3-sr-audio-upgrade-2020-right-hand-drive-parts/

You can actually buy the stock subwoofer from Tesla. You can install it in the exact same place it goes on the other trims. It fits perfectly. You will probably need to power it. If you want to hook up the unconnected speakers that are already in your car then you can tap into the wired speakers to steal the signal, send it to your new amp (yep you need that too) and then send it back to the speaker that was not wired at the factory. As others mentioned it sounds great. There are pages and pages of guides out there if you want to tackle it or find a shop that will do it for you. The expensive pieces are the sub and a powered amp. Cable and connectors are cheap in comparison. Be safe - I tapped into the main battery under the rear seat for power. It can be done safely, but you need to know what you are doing.
