Model 3 Plaid chances…

tbonechiggins | 2026-02-08 23:26 | 31 views

Now that the S and X are on the chopping block, what are the chances of seeing a tri-motor model 3.. The plaid was honestly my dream car and I might have pulled the trigger in retirement.

Model 3 can't support trimotor not enough room

DameLasNalgas 2026-02-09 00:42

Zero chance. Tesla isn't interested in pursuing performance anymore, they want people on FSD with regular LR cars. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually get rid of their performance variants. Tesla is no longer a company focused on cutting edge consumer cars that also break performance barriers for the price. Hopefully we get Chinese cars in the US soon, BYD just sued the US government so if they succeed, expect to see a tidal wave of high performance well priced Chinese cars by 2028-2029.

Independent_Tax_5088 2026-02-09 00:53

Crazy isn't it? Some of those BYD look amazing

GoBlues1 2026-02-09 01:01

Correct.. Tesla main focus is Robotaxi, Optimis Robots and Power storage. Elon new pay package is based off of these lines of business in addition to car sales and FSD subscription.

100% I’m really interested in the Zeekr 001. They are already planning to convert a Volvo factory in the US to a zeekr production line.

DameLasNalgas 2026-02-09 01:59

Yeah Geely and BYD have technically been in the US for awhile. If we want to see change, then we need to write our Congress members and tell them to remove the barriers.

Roadster’s probably gonna be tri motor. I believe in a previous interview Musk said the roadster prototype had the prototype plaid powertrain

Scary-Animator-5646 2026-02-09 03:10

The roadster will take the high performance spot the Plaid currently has. Model 3 performance will always be the model 3 performance since it’s not supposed to be the ultra premium sports car. It exists so people who want the $100,000 car will buy the $55,000 and feel like they’re getting a great deal.

And gas thrusters :)

Rytes478 2026-02-09 14:21

It’s sad but teslas decisions will have me considering Chinese cars if they were here or back to other legacy like Lexus. I love fsd but at this point in my life it’s not the end all be all. People progress in life and only having the 3 and Y to choose from is chokingly boring. I fear for Tesla. Elon lost his marbles. Meanwhile the R2 will be a hit. Idk. We will see

lnxgod 2026-02-09 17:06

I've owned a plaid and Ludacris and if you enjoy driving sometimes the m3p is way better to drive

Shakurs2pac 2026-02-09 19:46

Zero

word-dragon 2026-02-09 21:48

I think they will offer FSC (Full Self Carry) on Optimus. The robot will pick you up and jog to your destination.

Bbronson123 2026-02-10 01:59

Going on a decade of delays lol

BobaTea7 2026-02-10 02:24

The Performance is fast enough. If anything I welcome the air suspension.

DMC_Ryan 2026-02-10 04:53

$100 says the version that finally ships is a quad-motor powertrain.

The_Soldiet 2026-02-10 08:09

Too bad the Zeekr 001 isn't really a good car. You'd be better off with the 07GT or 7X if you're going Zeekr.

The_Soldiet 2026-02-10 08:12

It's not the 400v architecture that's holding it back, it's the battery tech.

Wonderful-Froyo1619 2026-02-10 14:09

What’s bad about it?

The_Soldiet 2026-02-10 14:15

Consumption (100/94kWh usable, but less range than a 78/75kWh Model Y AWD), weight, charging, price, poor software and user interface. https://elbil.no/test-av-zeekr-001/ (Norwegian test of the 001, just use Google translate)

Wonderful-Froyo1619 2026-02-10 17:20

This seems like an outdated review. From my understanding the 001 now uses a 900V architecture and CATL Qilin batteries. Recent tests show it hitting 500kW+ peaks, doing 10-80% in under 12 minutes. They also updated the UI in the recent refresh. Weight is definitely still an issue but you do get an excellent suspension 🤷‍♂️

bIokeonreddit 2026-02-11 01:31

Hardly a difficult thing for some clever engineers to solve

bIokeonreddit 2026-02-11 01:31

Yep, with a fan system for downforce

The_Soldiet 2026-02-11 02:31

Perhaps, but that version is only available in china. Efficiency is still bad though.

Wilder831 2026-02-11 02:35

I’m waiting for the “iron man edition” that flies me there with foot rockets before I fully commit to FSC

Away-Scar7754 2026-02-11 19:31

Not sure you could get a trimotor set up in an M3

IRACEMYCOPCAR 2026-02-11 23:06

Has nothing to do with that. The battery is too small to support more power draw.

IRACEMYCOPCAR 2026-02-11 23:13

There wont be a tri motor model 3 unless they redesign the whole car and install a larger battery. The 82kwh battery is roughly 20% smaller than the Plaid and cant support that much power draw reliably which is what the limiting factor is right now. The Highland 3P is marginally faster than the old 3P because of motor efficiency improvement and small software tweaks. The standard S makes close to 700HP on a dual motor configuration so they could have easily just put those motors in the 3P however they would make less power with the smaller battery pack. The Plaid motors are rated to max at 500HP each so two of those running at 400HP would be more than enough power in the 3P to make it as fast or faster than the S Plaid since it weighs 1000lbs less however to make a significant jump in HP they need a 100kwh+ battery pack which wont fit in the current floor of the Y or 3 and will also add significant weight. The Plaid+ they teased before they cancelled it would have had a larger 120kwh battery for longer range but mainly to increase power to the motors.

bobstribe 2026-02-13 03:24

Incorrect plenty of battery

lordbancs 2026-02-13 19:11

Eh it falls flat on its face after 60mph (2024 M3P)
