Lumen CS20 light bar on Model 3

Professional-Ad3539 | 2026-02-06 03:57 | 145 views

I recently moved to a semi-rural area and found the Model 3 headlight weren’t quite up to the job on dark country roads. I did a bit of searching and saw a few people had made this mod to add a light bar and controller from Norwegian company Bilkomponenter. I went down the same path and wanted to share results. Super happy with how it turned out and how it works. It’s a great addition if you’re driving through rural areas. Posting pictures in the comments.

I see no visibility improvement on the actual road

It’s much clearer in reality. I think the video over exposes the standard headlight section and under exposes the light bar section. Massive difference in real life

Macnit 2026-02-06 04:46

You succeeded in lighting up the tops of the trees.

Itsnotadrone 2026-02-06 04:48

I like it for the hi beams, lights up the sides nicely

blubbernator 2026-02-06 04:53

Doesn’t seem like much as the headlight are already excellent, but in Australia this is indeed very helpful if you don’t want to hit Wildlife (Kangaroos, Emus and other critters). Personally if avoid driving between dusk and dawn in the bush, but that’s not an option for some people.

Puzzled_Pudding_3191 2026-02-06 05:12

I like it a lot man. Finally a useful mod!!!

djec 2026-02-06 05:20

Yes this road is as viable as before.

Michael-ango 2026-02-06 05:24

Sound dampening insulation

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 05:31

No idea, but sound dampening seems believable.

L3GACY28 2026-02-06 05:44

How difficult was the install? Looks complicated

Cerfect_Pircle 2026-02-06 05:52

Could you link the guide you followed? Also, being that the light bar is covering around half of the radiator intake, are you worried at all about overheating/cooling issues?

Capital-Ladder-1313 2026-02-06 05:53

Snake oil

Present-Ad-9598 2026-02-06 05:59

So you installed high beams..?

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-06 06:00

Holy hell😭😭

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 06:20

Took about 2 hours. Nothing super complicated but part way through I figured out I really needed to remove the bumper which I hadn’t done before. But YouTube showed me how to do that. The kit from bilkomponenter makes the wiring very straight forward.

Previous-Engine2103 2026-02-06 06:22

Why not just get the infrared night vision? This is considered obnoxious where I'm from and will piss off alot of other drivers.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 06:27

The first part of the video you can see the matrix high beams turning on for a couple of seconds before the bar comes on. The different is huge. If you think the stock high beams do a good job then great news, you can save yourself the trouble. But since moving to the country, I didn’t feel like they did a very good job.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 06:28

https://www.bilkomponenter.no/blog/montering-av-ekstralys-tesla-model3 Not super worried about cooling, but I guess I’ll find out.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 06:28

Ok

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 06:30

Yeah I thought the stock lights were fine when I lived in the city, but where I live now it’s super dark and just about every car has a light bar. I think it’s a good upgrade.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 06:33

Like the normal high beams, it turns off when other cars are present. The controller I got with it ties in with the auto matrix high beams.

DeathBlade94 2026-02-06 06:41

I wish I could find this kit in the states.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 06:44

Im in Australia. I had it shipped from Norway. https://preview.redd.it/kmpa6i30mthg1.jpeg?width=1771&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=988c5ed1ac943ad9037da96b62f5cbd563e68399

DeathBlade94 2026-02-06 06:45

Last I check that one site would not ship to the us. I may have to check again though. I also fear tariffs 😂

Justino2345 2026-02-06 06:49

On behalf of every single driver in the opposite lane: F U

FamousStore150 2026-02-06 06:54

This is obnoxious

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 07:03

Oh don’t worry. I’m sure someone is building a factory in the US to make these as we speak (… because of the tariffs).

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 07:04

99% of the time when I’m driving at night, I’m just about the only car on the road. I probably live somewhere that’s different to where you live.

digitaldisorder_ 2026-02-06 07:15

I would think it would be about as complicated to turn it on and off for upcoming drivers as it is to turn your high beams on and off manually. Ah, the good ol’ days!

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 07:17

The control unit reads the pixel activation of the matrix high beams. If a single pixel is disabled because the car detects another vehicle, then the light bar is turned off. Once 100% of high beam pixels are enabled, the light bar turns on after a short delay. So it basically works like a super conservative version of the auto high beams.

Aromatic-Experience9 2026-02-06 07:37

This auto feature doesn’t work well on any car, it’s too late every time and if another car is too far away it doesn’t work at all.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 07:53

I can also just press the button to turn them off … like every other car in the last 70 years or so.

mrandr01d 2026-02-06 07:53

Op is a menace

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 07:56

Straight to jail

gambuzino88 2026-02-06 07:59

Have you ever crossed paths with other “smart light” drivers on a slightly curved road? The moment I realised why I was getting blinded by so many modern cars I turned off the automatic lights immediately. It’s not just Tesla, and not just SUVs, it’s literally all of them with this feature. They take into consideration cars coming your direction on a straight line, but not other angles.

Own_Reaction9442 2026-02-06 08:00

Not gonna judge too much because I have a setup on my van that's not too dissimilar, although I only use it on forest service and BLM roads and the like. (The lack of painted markings, and the rough grading of such roads, makes it extra important to see well at night. And it gets \*really\* dark in the desert.) I'd maybe aim yours a bit lower. Currently you're jacklighting owls, and they aren't much of a road hazard unless you're a mouse. I don't know what state you're in, but you may want to check the local laws and make sure you're not setting yourself up for a ticket. In California auxiliary lights like that must be covered when you're on the highway.

Really_cheatah 2026-02-06 08:25

Looks like a good candidate for r/fuckyourheadlights

Present-Ad-9598 2026-02-06 09:06

I definitely see the difference… but what benefit does it serve to light up the forest? You need to see the road and in front of you, not above

Left-Iron-2133 2026-02-06 09:13

Yeah I noticed this as well. The light bar hasn’t really done anything for the road view. Imagine how blinding it is coming head on 😂

Left-Iron-2133 2026-02-06 09:14

The light you added does nothing to light up the road and lights up the trees. No offence but it’s completely unnecessary and now more chance of blindng other drivers. Well done you 👏🏽

Eduhsoj 2026-02-06 09:31

I installed a lightbar with the controller last weekend, too. Just to add: The controller is made by "ALCD" (alcd.no) and the guy behind that is super cool. Had some questions regarding the hardware-version of the controller and we're chatting via mail occasionally since then. Highly recommend that controller!

tightcall 2026-02-06 09:36

The matrix high beam on newer 2022 model actually blocks cars individually with squares of shadows. Really nice feature.

Psice 2026-02-06 09:41

I never felt model 3 lights weren't bright enough, they are actually pretty good

Schnitzhole 2026-02-06 09:45

Nice for deer spotting. I find the new model Y headlights to be completely adequate otherwise, even on rural roads

Dry-Dingo7930 2026-02-06 10:15

Nah I get it mate. That will show the kangaroos off the side of the road. Often necessary in areas where there are zero street lights. It’s not about lighting up the road. It’s about looking into the scrub and seeing the critters that are gonna jump ya. Shine on mate.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 10:17

This guy gets it

Aromatic-Experience9 2026-02-06 11:36

It was your argument that the blinding would be an issue because of the auto feature… Also, if your turning them of manually. What’s the point in having them?

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 11:44

In the olden days, everyone used to turn their high beams on and off using their fingers.

ge33ek 2026-02-06 12:02

I like it, cost for parts and effort?

Instincts 2026-02-06 12:04

He's scanning for drop bears, lest they drop upon him

Enjoy_The_Ride413 2026-02-06 12:17

You will soon be featured in r/fuckyourheadlights. 🤣

Icy-Image-2619 2026-02-06 12:30

How are the stock lights not enough????

Ill_Savings_8338 2026-02-06 13:10

Guess I am the only other rural driver? It is extremely important to light up the sides of the roads as well, so many damn deer.

Ill_Savings_8338 2026-02-06 13:12

Is it a problem on highways or can you easily disconnect it so you aren't blanketing the world with light?

CopperBlitter 2026-02-06 13:19

Actually, in the really olden days, we turned them off with our left foot. There was a button on the floor. Imagine coming around a curve, left foot on the clutch to downshift, and suddenly there's another car there and you need to turn off the high beams, but you can't because your foot is too busy.

Impressive-Arm-2683 2026-02-06 13:24

Exactly this! It lights up the shoulders where deer are almost invisible and love to dart across the street

TheBowerbird 2026-02-06 13:25

I'm going to bet this doesn't have "pixels" like those, so wouldn't really function unless it turns off completely?

disasterless 2026-02-06 14:11

Are you looking for Owls?

jerryweezer 2026-02-06 14:28

Yep! I’m with you here!

Muffstic 2026-02-06 14:44

We'll duh, that's why you're supposed to have 3 feet. /s PS, I miss the button on the floor

CopperBlitter 2026-02-06 15:02

I'm just glad that somebody else besides me remembers it. I was waiting for all the accusations that I was making stuff up.

Muffstic 2026-02-06 15:13

I was going to comment about it, then I saw yours and decided to add to it instead.

Electronic_Load_3651 2026-02-06 15:27

Ah yes the tops of trees, natural deer habitat.

Ill_Savings_8338 2026-02-06 15:56

Apparently you have never heard of dropdeers, distant cousin to dropbears.

Electronic_Load_3651 2026-02-06 15:58

Ah yes, ones that terrorize squirrels up in the trees? 😂

BlaaaZ90 2026-02-06 16:37

Yea, sorry bro but you only illuminanted the trees, no real use. Isnt matrix lights now messed up and you cant basically use them also?

Judgement_92 2026-02-06 17:35

Dude nice, you got a link? How hard was it to install? Unless you took it somewhere?

PaidForThis 2026-02-06 18:56

Spatial awareness is conceptual in the mind

xpietoe42 2026-02-06 20:23

its like driving in daylight! Nice 👍🏻

allofdarknessin1 2026-02-06 20:54

Being able to see deers or other animals crossing in a road that does have them would be a big deal.

smurfycork 2026-02-06 22:03

It’s the tops of the trees you have to worry about.. that’s where the ninjas are

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 23:42

Took about two hours. Probably would have been less if I’d decided to take the bunker off right from the start as a spent a bit of time trying to work out if I could avoid it. Nothing too complicated.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 23:45

https://preview.redd.it/k0cid1b5oyhg1.jpeg?width=1771&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98446343cc736dc411b38426f1c903abe424c1f1 This and about two hours to install

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 23:46

They only come on when the high beams are on 100%. There’s also functionality to if you flash your lights 6 times, it will disable the light bar for the rest of the trip.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 23:47

The light bar only comes on if the matrix high beam is on 100%. If the matrix is doing half a high beam to block out a car, that all still works exactly the same, and no light bar. When the car goes away and the high beams return to 100%, the light bar comes back on.

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 23:48

Company is bilkomponenter in Norway

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-06 23:51

Yep this. Lots of kangaroos, wallabies, foxes, hares and turkeys where I live. Also on roads with no line marking or edges, it can be helpful to see which direction the gap in the trees is going up ahead so you know what the road is doing. Seems like a lot of people in the comments here who have never left the suburbs.

Gh0st_Pirate_LeChuck 2026-02-07 01:36

You don’t need to see that much jfc

BlaaaZ90 2026-02-07 06:19

Ok...i have lightbar on my 22 Y also but never seen it light up, even when manually turning on high beam. Got it preowned so im not sure whats going on.

randamm 2026-02-07 09:31

I recently installed a BrightSource 20” E-Mark and it is absolutely glorious for those dark rural highways featuring moose and haze that eats up the light. It’s very handy to see the landscape and the animals!

wwwz 2026-02-07 11:53

So do the normal headlights, they don't even get a chance in this video. Also, they do it without ruining your night vision. Edit: Also, turning up the contrast doesn't help to see deer better in the shadows. This makes the shadows relatively darker.

wwwz 2026-02-07 12:18

I drive mostly at night on rural two lane highways like yours here in the US, with a Model 3. Bear cubs, raccoons, possums, deer, armadillos, foxes, beavers, etc. Light bars like these don't help. Not only do they ruin your night vision, they increase the contrast between light and dark areas, actually making it harder to see things in the harsh shadows. Then, when you do have to eventually turn it off for oncoming traffic, your night vision is ruined, and you can't see as effectively. The standard model 3 adaptive headlights do a great job by themselves of illuminating the sides of the roads. Light bars like these are made for off-roading, not cruising down roads. This is not only a hazard to other drivers, but to yourself. The supposed effectiveness you perceived is an illusion, mate.

wwwz 2026-02-07 12:29

If by, "this", you mean the light bar, then, correct.

wwwz 2026-02-07 12:31

Pay closer attention. Next time you pass a Tesla at night, notice you can see its accent lights and the headlights kinda look dim. Why? Because you're not getting blinded by it. Those are the adaptive matrix high beams. Tesla and Rivian have uniquely had the only approved adaptive matrix lights in the US for years now. Edit: Audi, BMW and Ford are literally, supposedly, joining later this month, February 2026, on only their newest models, with a software update.

dctl59 2026-02-07 16:24

How does it look on the car? Can you post a shot of how you mounted ?

Slayerz00m 2026-02-07 16:39

Do the world a favor. Ask a friend to come at you from the other side to gauge the glare. Tesla Model 3/Y headlights have never felt insufficient to me, and I routinely drive in the night, on dark rural roads _(looking for dark skies for stargazing)_

Professional-Ad3539 2026-02-07 18:19

I’ve posted a few photos in the comments here https://preview.redd.it/xe27o2xt64ig1.jpeg?width=2100&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc167a22998ecc84e60ceb841461cf404d82fdbf

Jesta914630114 2026-02-07 19:58

The light isn't pointed too high... There is no reason to illuminate the stops of trees.

wtfylat 2026-02-07 22:28

Lol.

Ill_Savings_8338 2026-02-07 22:55

I'm sold!

JuiceAdditional23 2026-02-08 07:49

Epic! Most impressive.

gambuzino88 2026-02-10 07:33

I don’t need to pay any more attention than I already do. I have a Model 3, I can clearly see the beam direction, and I get blinded by other Teslas as well. [Here's a perfect example of what I literally just said above: road with a slight angle.](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaSupport/comments/1r0rqka/model_3_matrix_headlights_arent_dimming_for_trucks/) It being approved in the US means nothing to me as a EU driver. The regulations are different. EDIT: Added video example.

wwwz 2026-02-10 17:44

Hey! I do that too. Last time I went dark sky searching I had a scare in rural Virginia though. I agree. Model 3 lights are very sufficient and this light bar is completely unnecessary and actually a safety issue.

Slayerz00m 2026-02-10 17:54

It can be useful if it throws light to the side/shoulder while keeping it low The video shows it quite high

dctl59 2026-02-10 22:10

That's very slick. Ty for sharing and well done on the mounting/installation.

Maximum-Potential337 2026-02-13 02:47

Even if it was the same on the road you can still see the sides of the road much better. Which will help you see wildlife that could potentially hit if it runs out in front of you.

Specialist-Lychee667 2026-02-22 05:44

How do I get my hands on a lightbar like this in the US?

Professional-Ad3539 2026-03-04 12:52

I’m in Australia and ordered it from Bilkomponenter in Norway.
