Got the low voltage battery installed at Tesla center and they did installed a battery from 2023. AITA for being mad. Not a support question. They installed a battery from 2023! Was not expecting it. Ohh and also they lost one of the bolts. Battery only had 2 bolt, should be 3.

The lithium low voltage batteries are supposed to last for the life of the vehicle

KilroyKSmith 2026-02-06 00:35

The LFP low voltage battery is expected to last the life of the car, while getting charged/discharge multiple times a day. Getting a three year old battery that’s been sitting on the shelf is no big deal.  If it had been a lead-acid battery, I would certainly have complained.  But not for this.

pinchy74 2026-02-06 00:36

The lithium low voltage battery should outlive the vehicle, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Aromatic-Union1707 2026-02-06 00:36

The battery is okay. The bolt missing is not. Why did you remove the battery?

Mvtchwow 2026-02-06 00:37

YTA

whatthepho6 2026-02-06 01:15

I would be mad. That battery should have been made fresh, preferably the day before you arrive.

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 01:21

Well they don’t. If the battery runs out and you leave it for more than a month for whatever the reason it will go bad.

Krunk83 2026-02-06 01:29

Why are you digging out the battery they installed to check the date?

unpluggedcord 2026-02-06 01:31

Dude what are you doing?

dantodd 2026-02-06 01:39

Craft batteries are really a lot better, but only if made by sustainable fair trade labor.

rontombot 2026-02-06 01:48

Did you try to jump start the low voltage system and start the car? The 16v lithium batteries go into self-protection mode when their voltage gets too low, but can usually be awakened by using the car jump start terminals.

raphaeldaigle 2026-02-06 01:51

Do you have the Highland version? If not you shouldn’t be complaining since you have the right battery. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 01:53

Yep. Tried everything. It will keep depleting if not charged in a couple weeks which sometimes happens. In my case it was a couple months.

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-06 02:10

Yes. If you completely neglect an electric vehicle you can hurt the battery.

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 02:18

Yes agreed and so if you buy a new battery because you neglected your vehicle, you would expect a battery that is new. Not a battery that looks like it came out of a junk yard that has an older manufacturer date than the battery that came out of your car. I specially if you paid 500$ And also. It’s suppose to protect itself with 10% battery. What’s the purpose of a battery protecting itself if it’s still going to drain

theotherharper 2026-02-06 02:23

Flooded/wet Lead-acid batteries age very rapidly and you certainly should not buy a lead-acid which is new old stock. But that's a lithium. Losing a bolt is just not acceptable. That is the thing I would make a stink about.

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 02:34

Probably an explanation of the craziness of why I would even take off the battery from my car. We had some friends from mexico(4 hours deep into Mexico). They came to visit and they ran out of battery. They called the service center in the U.S. and they said they wouldn’t service it. They wanted us to tow it to the border and then have Tesla tow it to the service center in Mexico.which would cost more than $1000. They had to leave. After months of trying (on and off with Tesla) to get them to service it, I was on Witt’s end. 1. They wouldn’t service it in the USA. 2 they wouldn’t sell you the 16v battery.(which is a whole another story. 3 the towing would cost $1000. Being creative, I came up with a solution. 1. Take my car and have them change my battery with a new one. 2.Get my car back, take off new battery and put the original battery back. 3.Put new battery on the Mexican car. They didn’t want to but ultimately couldn’t reject it since it’s within guidelines. That is why I took the battery out. And when I pulled the battery it looked in worse condition than the other 2 batteries. Not even including the fact that it was missing a bolt. I really thought that it was used. I’m still not 100 sure it isn’t. I really can’t imagine anyone here paying full price $500 for what looks like a battery that came out of the junk yard. I could’ve bought those all day long for 1/2 or 1/4 of the price. But yes after months and horrible service the car is running.

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 02:35

Yeah but really, the picture doesn’t do it justice. The battery looks bad. But yeah the bolt was icing on the cake.

protonecromagnon2 2026-02-06 02:50

I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself. But no, the battery being 3 years old shouldn't make much of a difference. Lithium is stable when it's at it's storage voltage. The physical condition is a little strange but they should warranty their parts and labor

rontombot 2026-02-06 12:02

Your main HV battery depletes in a couple of weeks??? Even a couple of months is fast... are you constantly running some schedule in the car... or Sentry Mode?? I don't think a new LV battery is going to be the solution... if the HV battery drains, there's no way to keep the LV battery from draining.

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 12:04

No. Kid was playing games and left the game on. The car ran out of battery. They couldn’t open the charging port and from there the rest of the story.

rontombot 2026-02-06 12:05

OK, one time deal then... hopefully.

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 12:06

Yeah. My post is more toward the low voltage battery was $500 and looks like it came from a junk yard. Really think it might’ve been reburbished or something because it was numbers with markers on it.

rontombot 2026-02-06 12:10

Mine is an early 2022 with the 12v battery... but as an old EE who has tons of lithium battery experience, I'd love to get my hands on one of those for experimental investigation... but don't feel like paying eBay prices for a hobby experiment thing.

rontombot 2026-02-06 12:41

Dang... that really stinks... I just don't get that they wouldn't outright sell you one... it's called right to repair, and Tesla is one of the biggest supporters... they publish their service manual online, and "most" of their normal repair parts are reasonably priced. Even a quick Google search says they do sell them, priced about $350 over the counter. This is one of the authorized Tesla parts resellers... https://preview.redd.it/5491kcspdvhg1.jpeg?width=2872&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2118cb4ea945e54a50592d72742f13465b5aa82a

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 12:42

If you try buying it it won’t let you and say it’s not available because it’s “hazardous”

hahnsoloii 2026-02-06 12:43

lol right? But in all honesty probably trust issues. I mean, can we blame em?

rontombot 2026-02-06 12:44

I'd be reporting them to corporate HQ... it's not like they're a privately owned entity...

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-06 12:46

Really in general this kind of tipped me over the edge on Tesla. Customer service was horrible.. service center never answered the phone. And the sales person would always promise a call back and wouldn’t ever receive a call back. It would take weeks to get a call back and we couldn’t get a service ticket because the car is from Mexico. I don’t think I’ll purchase another Tesla vehicle ever. The are the build quality already had me iffy about it. This kind of just did it for me for them to be OK with some one being 3-4 months without a car and not offer a real solution is beyond me. I know the battery is supposed to last the life of the vehicle, but things happen.

Ok_Law_1809 2026-02-07 00:33

I put a follow up on why in another comment. It was a necessity. Only reason I knew a bolt was missing it’s because the battery is very easy to remove because o sadly had to take it out and put back a couple times. Takes less than 1 minute to take it out.
